I like how when Cornelius started talking about “ancient evil” mumbo jumbo, the president didn’t dismiss his input at all. He was really taking all the info he could possibly get.
When Cornelius stands up the computer voice acknowledges him as an expert in astral phenomena - so he was presumably a respected scientific expert in addition to being the priest.
Being president of 200 billion sentient life forms across god knows how many species and worlds surely pried open his perspective X) But yes, excellent point, and I like that as well.
R.I.P. Tommy Lister Jr. (The President), Brion James (General Munro), Ian Holm (Cornelius), and John Neville (General Staedart), from this clip, as well as Luke Perry (Billy) from the film's opening scenes. You all helped make this a great movie!
To be fair, sometimes it's better to take a moment to gather your thoughts and express yourself properly than to just blurt out whatever is on your mind right away. You're right though.
I like how the President is a reasonable authority figure since when the sphere hardens itself, he immediately takes Father Cornelius seriously, at least enough to state he is having a doubt about firing. Unfortunately General Staedart doesn't take it seriously and it cost him his life as well as the lives of everyone on board the ship.
I get the feeling part of the reason the general had no doubts was a kind of effect of the sphere. In the end, he was bleeding from his head, like Zorg had been. He was unable to speak or make decisions. If the sphere can effect him so overtly, it may have been able to have much more subtle influences
The general at 1:57 is a completely different man than the one at 3:02. He was in charge completely. He knew his procedure, his ship, its capacities, and believed be was proudly protecting his citizens- *and no doubts.* Suddenly after the backfire, less than a about a minute later, he was scared, small, and desperate. He asked his second in command with a whimper if he had anything else. He knew they did not. His mind was being influenced, perhaps controlled, from the beginning. The man who wanted to destroy the sphere is when the sphere wanted him to be aggressive, to attack, and to make it stronger. The second one was a helpless, paralyzed prey. General Staedart was dead the moment he pulled his ship into formation.
Interesting how this evil in the movie is acting exactly like Satan in the real world. When the military folks decided to shoot at it, it hardened its surface, why? To deceive people to think that there is something fragile inside of it that could be destroyed by the attack and people thought they can penetrate the surface and destroy it, while in reality there were no options for these people to destroy it, they were doomed to only make it stronger. In the same way in this real world so many people, after being influenced by dark forces, do different rituals thinking it will protect them and the first thing they feel after a ritual can be a sense of peace and calmness, so they calm down and think they got the problem fixed, without realizing that Satan is still owning them and waiting to get them to hell.
That is actually a very threatening concept, compared to current sci-if antagonist anyway. A giant orb of fire, fury, and malice, that instigates aggression upon its observers. It’s victims attack, and the orb feeds off of this aggression. Once it gets what it wants, it leaves the victims helpless and afraid, then it finishes what it started.

I like how the president character was depicted as being level headed and reasonable here. He actually gave the priest a chance to make his case rather than dismissing him outright. That's pretty cool.
Yes, if only atheists/agnostics would be similarly level-headed and reasonable and would give a place in their hearts to be very serious when they hear Christians telling them about the dangers of this universal evil that is best known as Satan and the devil who tempts us to live in sin and not care about it...
