The Black Hole: USS Cygnus

- This is a compilation of the notable special effects in the film The Black Hole. i love this film...well atleast the first half. they started filming the movie before the script was finished so the ending could have been better but its still an awesome film.
but i really like Dr. Reinhardt and wish those astronauts hadnt messed up his plans tbh
either way, this film had some awesome visuals and audio!
Prophetic: Professor Reinhardt was the first one to warn us of the consequences of improperly secured flat screen TV's.
Ain't it the truth.
Truly before it's time.
hahhhahaha jumbo tron lands on you ,,,,you need your Alexa to save you but her legs are not working today ,,,,,plus she organising your kids pizza delivery ,,,,
Just ask any cat.
An improperly secured wall-mount CRT would be far worse
This movie got me into black holes when I was young, which got me into physics.
It'll always be one of my favourite classic sci-fi movies.
Oh it was secure all right, just not Black Hole rated.
It’s insane how one movie can ruin someone’s life.
@@goodstuff8156 sorry to hear, hope you overcome it soon
@@BoogieBrando The fiction is interesting. I agree.
"Maximilian, bring us about." The most iconic phrase in the whole movie, I think. Max was a great robot villain. There are not many robot characters out there that can just sit there and radiate evil. Plus the fact that he never talked, that pulsing red eye that gave you the impression of pure, constant malice, and when Reinhart said," Protect me from Maximillian," made the robot's overall character quite frightening.
My fav phrase too. His inflections are perfect.
Honestly I've always wondered how Maximilian was created and how he made Reinhardt aware of what the crew was up; when he only happen to catch Captain Holland at the robot funeral at not Mr. Booth in the agricultural center as well just a thought
iCoNiC durrrr
@@adamwilder2943 it’s like Reinhardt created Maximilian to ensure it would all continue.
I always called Maximilian "King of the Cylons" LOL!
MAXIMILIAN. That red robot gave me the shivers when I saw that movie as a kid, and he still does today...
Truly an underrated sci-fi movie.
While I recognize it's not exactly prime cinema.. this film has a special place in my heart. It's so creepy and captures that eerie space vibe and how fragile life is in such a deadly environment that many other, more popular films do not. The black hole, a long lost dead ship, a silent robotic crew and murderous super robot, the mad schemes of a long insane genius... it might as well be called sci-fi horror rather than adventure.
Like Interstellar, Contact, Arrival and Alien, this is TRUE sci-fi rather than space opera like Star Wars and Star Trek.
@@benrussell-gough1201 Star Trek isn't a space opera. It's a serialised exploration of human and scientific theory, via a small crew of protagonists, serving on a single, space station, or starship.
Maximilian slicing and dicing Dr. Durant was horrid and classic.
@@benrussell-gough1201 LOL call Star Trek not scifi means you didnt seen much from all those near 1000 episodes...
@@prolamer7 Classic Trek was sci-fi. Modern trek is space opera and you can't change my mind.
This was one of those movies that stayed with me since childhood. The robots, the concept of a black hole, the strange ending with heaven and hell. All very inspiring. Today's movies would spend more time explaining things instead of being simply mysterious.
+pspboy7 I remember seeing this on a loop at the tower cinema in blackpool- remember those days ?. I bought the dvd for a friend at xmas who had never seen it and he loved it. I had the vinyl soundtrack when i was a kid, i wish i had kept hold of it, This is still my favourite disney movie
adam brown probably mine too.
Today's movies Maximilian would have been a black lesbian trans in a wheelchair fighting against the patriarchy.
i just watched this on my home theatre ,in 5.1 dolby ,,,, christ the sound and bass is incredible ,when the engines fire up its amazing ,having a powerful system ,i couldnt even activate the subs ,,, the film is great ,amazing effects and script ,for its day ,loved this film like it was yesterday in the cinema ,,, ,,,,,,,
This is the only movie me and my dad went to the cinema to watch together, strange how you always remember these things
The only movie I went to see with .y dad was Schindler's List.
Bad idea.
The thruster effect is excellent
What amazed me about this film was the level of detail that went into it. If you look closely at the control panels for instance you can see that they're not just static, many of them have moving instrumentation and independent lights that flash and blink on their own, unlike in many movies what they all flash together. It shows that the set designers spent a lot of time ensuring things were authentic looking as possible. Given that this was just a kids movie it's really impressive that they went to such lengths!!
Is it really a kids’ movie, though? It was sold as though that were the case, but ultimately it’s a gothic horror movie set in space, where the principal antagonist has turned his crew members into lobotomized slaves.
I'm still amazed that as brilliant as Reinhardt was, he never thought to wait until the meteor shower ended before going into the black hole.
Well, he knew our asses were getting sore...
While that is a weak plot point it kinda shows how stubborn Reinhardt was. He made up his mind and wanted to bring the whole ship into the black hole and absolutely nothing was going to stop him.
One of the most visually stunning movies to ever grace the big screen. if you younger folks never had a chance to see this on the big screen, then you really, truly missed something spectacular.
The Black Hole was meant to be seen on the big screen. It was quite an experience at the time.
2001 and Star Wars spoilt us all though… I love the Black Hole and how atmospheric (no pun intended) it is, but pretty much nothing came close to the dramatically better quality and detail of the effects or set/ship design of those movies for decades afterwards.
This is one of the few movies I ever saw more than once at the cinema. Once with my parents and once in a birthday party.
I've always loved the Cygnus. It looks as if it would be as much at home in a Jules Verne tale as it does a sci fi futuristic setting.
We need more light-up spaceships. Not because they're practical, but because they're pretty.
As for Jules Verne, it can be no coincidence that _20,000 Leagues Under The Sea_ was one of Disney's previous special effects spectacles.
@@ericssmith2014 Agreed!
Cygnus definitely had a steampunk/gothic look.
I see a warhammer 40k vibe in it.
@@sonofeyeabovealleffoff5462 I can kinda see that. I've only played a couple of Warhammer video games, briefly, but one of them had profile images of some of their ships, and yes, I could see the Cygnus sorta belonging in there.
I remember having the cassette and book combo. I would turn the pages over and over and over then restart again.
R.I.P. Maximmillian Schell, thank you for some memorable performances.
he was a great actor in a poorly scripted movie, I hate when that happens.
I love how the red robot was named after him :-)
@@mountainstartemple6041 I've read somewhere that it was a coincidence that the actor and robot shared the name. Initially I also thought there was a connection though. :)
"Blow it apart before it hits us!"

Because they tried to blow it apart.

USS Cygnus has to be one of the most, if not the most, gothic looking starships in all of science fiction. So very cool. And it had teeth as well!!
We need more imaginative films like this again.
Great compilation!! I thoroughly enjoyed the structural beauty of the U.S.S. Cygnus, and like you, the first half of the movie. Awesome production design!! Loved it! Thanks for this!!
The Cygnus is far lovelier than the Battlestar Galactica or the Millennium Falcon.
The practical effects in this are awesome. Wish they still did movies like this. Reminds me a bit of Event Horizon.
I have heard that EVENT HORIZON was inspired by THE BLACK HOLE.
@@karazor-el6085
That would make a lot of sense. I do love both of these movies.
They did all end up in hell at the end, didn't they?
@@k1productions87
No just the Robot and the scientist.
@@lordterra1377 and the entire crew of the Cygnus. Granted you can only see it in widescreen format, as they are on either side. the 4:3 TV format cuts them off so you cannot see.
This will always be one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie shaped my entire career path into robotics and engineering.
The cinematography, the special effects, the production design, the sound track, the story ... sci-fi at its best!
John Barry’s score was AWESOME
Best? This movie was a lame and rushed attempt to tap into Star Wars mania. I was 8 when it came out, and it generated little interest. The robot designs were particularly awful. The late '70s and early '80s was the era of Star Wars, Star Trek The Motion Picture, and Tron. That was sci-fi at its best.
I LOVE this film. Certainly one of the top sci-fi films of the 1970's. The SFX, especially the model spaceships, were amazing and still look very good now.
That’s one beautiful looking ship. I like how glassy the design is, unlike a lot of scifi ships where it’s just thick hulls.
The Cygnus will always be a brilliantly designed space ship, just like the black hole towards the climax will always be a brilliant effect.
THIS movie needs to be rebooted, not friggin Spiderman for the 9th time!
Edward Leslie don't forget to toss yourself into the rubbish to.
airbrat this was supposed to be rebooted by tron legacy director.
who also hints at it with a poster of the black hole in the film tron legacy sadly nothing has really been heard of more about the reboot.
chances are it wont happen.
I'd like to see a Black Hole reboot too, if only to see how scary Maximilian would look with today's technology. His old body always looked a bit stiff, so give him some fully flexible new limbs which can even move in ways which _human_ limbs can't, add a few new limbs and limb attachments (like drills, acetylene torches, pneumatic hammers or maybe even a steel-slicing chainsaw), and watch out! O_O
Nope. No more reboots.
+acrovader What if they do the reboot _well,_ like they did for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I Spit on your Grave reboots? Not every reboot is as pan-worthy as RoboCop and Halloween, you know.

Reinhardt: "Maximilian! Help me!"
Maximilian: [silently] "No. I'll see you in Hell, boss!"
Maximilian: "Computer says no"
More like: "I'll be you in Hell!"
to which Reinhardt would reply: "No, I'LL be IN YOU in Hell!!!"
The merging scene needed more background music, like "Let's Get It On."
Maximilian: “Your usefulness has ceased. You are no longer necessary.”
The Cygnus is beautiful. It's right up there with the mothership from Close encounters.
It has a victorian design! Love it!
It’s one of the more practical looking spaceships I’ve seen.
The beating that ship took man, and still kept going! If he has just calmed down and waited till it was 100% repaired again.
Awesome movie
They probably woulda have made it if he didn't order "Increase power to maximum", the reactor wouldn't have overloaded, and the meteor storm was almost over already anyway
"either way, this film had some awesome visuals and audio!" - AGREED!!! I absolutely loved this movie when I first saw it as a kid in 1979, it really captured my imagination!
Thanks for the post!
Here's a thought: the Cygnus X-1 black hole, the first such object to be detected, was only widely thought to be an actual black hole by about 1973, or about six years before this movie was released. My guess is that the USS Cygnus was named after the black hole. I always thought that ship was cool, like a Victorian greenhouse in space.
Saw this on its' release and i don't think I appreciated how well made it is. The script might be better but the effort put into the special effects is tremendous.
Cygnus was the name of the star getting sucked into the first black hole Science discovered.
The scenery in this movie was gorgeous.
The model makers who made the Cygnus really did a great job, the ship really looks awesome, you can't even see that well the explosions are miniatures as well. So highly underrated.
I agree- the USS Cygnus is a very cool ship!
Never saw anything like it before.
Saw it in theaters when I was ten. Hell was a real place to me back then, and I found the ending terrifying. Thanks for the upload, of all the flaws of this film, spectacular (if fantastic) production design is one of its stronger suits.
This movie scared the absolute shit out of me when I was a kid.
It's is kind of like 2001 & Event Horizon had a Baby.
The intro music is burned into my brain. Still a great movie today IMO.
Me too!
Maximilian hovering about the place (opening the door super quickly on the Captain who saw the funeral procession) and the film's ending. Were scary concepts to kids at the time i agree.
Grew up on this film, doesn't scare me now but long ago perhaps just a little yes in some places!
My brain too.
Because it the black hole itself was shot in a huge tank of plexiglass and paint colors to create the vortex in the center with very bright lights to intensify the colors of gas and matter glowing bright hot as it swirls into the black hole.
I used to think this was the original Event Horizon.
Fragmentweise
It kinda is.
Well... they kinda did go to hell at the end, didn't they?
You're not far off. Having seen both, I consider this movie far more disturbing. And we're taking about a PG rated Disney movie versus an R-rated horror movie, at that.
@@stormthrush37 Also if you listen, the wind-like sound as the drive section of the Event Horizon disappears through the gateway is very similar to the sound as the Cygnus wreck makes its final plunge into the Black Hole.
The theatrics of this film! The "Corman-Poe" vibe of the main theme! That is paramount to any reboot of this film! It MUST retain its gothic theme!
Years later, after retirement, Professor Reinhard stood on a beach with Tea Leoni and waited for the the asteroid to hit earth.
Not bad company in the last moments of your life.
That, sir or madam, was a deep cut. Well done
Omg you are right! !!!
Captain Dan Holland arrives back on Earth to hunt down a vicious city dwelling reptile in the sewers of Chicago and then later go on to start his own bail bonds business right after getting a hair transplant.
Hands down, the U.S.S. Cygnus is the coolest looking spaceship in the history of sci-fi cinema.
the end scene of this move going into the black hole was very trippy like a trip to heaven/hell. This movie is cool but gave me nightmares as a kid. Thanks for the post
My dad remembered when this movie was in theaters. He said he heard somewhere Disney was trying to make the ending like the movie 2001
If nothing else proves this is a space horror flick, this should. The sites and sounds, that red color used. The ship being torn apart, all of it. Mad scientist, evil sidekick who is more evil than the mad scientist, zombie helpers. Heaven and Hell at the end, this was no Star Wars.
You missed the best shot of the Cygnus, towards the start when the Cygnus is reactivated, and bursts into life, just beautiful, Plus, John Barry's score is wonderful.
Very brave of Disney to put its name to something so dark in 1979.
alot of disney movies are dark, or have dark under tones.
@@kekons23 You are right Cap& Capper and Many more.
John Barry MADE this film, no question about it. He also gave us the equally appropriate soundtrack of the James Bond film "Moonraker"
Let's not forget Dragonslayer.
Who would imagine a Disney movie in which the Princess gets eaten by baby dragons?
What always give me the dark vibes the most is not the violence by Maximillian, but two important scenes. Captain Holland exploring the ship on his own, seeing the crew quarters and then the funeral. And then seeing the Cygnus as a dead hulk falling into the singularity. Those always gave me the chills. And I am not sure those would be captured again in a reboot.
Original Black Hole will always be the best.
Back when Disney was great. Those days are long gone.
The best production design EVER!
are you serious? Alien was made same year and didn't age a bit.
I love this movie too...absolutely one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Heh...one of my favorite shots in this movie is just after Maximilian destroys the Palomino, inadvertently sending it careening into the Cygnus. Reinhardt shoots a reproving look at Max, and the body language of Max pretty much says: "Ummm....oops?" LOL! I also love the score to this movie by John Barry. Although the first 15 minutes of the score is rather redundant, the music really takes off after the Palomino crew board the Cygnus. Thanks for sharing this video.
Fun Fact: Rush wrote a song called Cygnus-X1 in 1977, two years before this film was released, about a ship that travels into a black hole. Cygnus-X1 is a strong X-ray source believed to be a black hole in the constellation Cygnus.
Love this so much, watched it countless times on TV when I was little kid.
When the ship is coming apart, Maximillian turns and looks at him like, "Dood I told you this was a really bad idea!". Always listen to Maximillian
You know one does not question Maximilian. It just isn't done. He doesn't like to argue much.
Maximillian's pretense as a servant was pretty much done with at that point.
@@ianwestc he’s thinking “ seriously professor I told you the black hole would crush this thing like an empty beer can”

I think Reinhardt crested Maximilian in order to oversee his work, such to the point where no human compassion could interfere. Reinhardt knew that even he was capable of letting his emotions get in the way. He needed a creation of pure evil to see everything through.

I remember watching this when I was young. I thought it was the coolest shit I've ever seen. I'm 47 now and I still think it was a great movie for the time.
After Star Wars hit hard in the box office EVERYONE tried to capture that lightning in their own bottles! Even Disney tried, but failed miserably, with this movie The Black Hole. Even Star Trek was revived as a successful movie series after over a decade of obscurity and reruns of the original show (Trekkies try to deny this but if it wasn't for SW they would never have gotten to Wrath Of Khan or The Next Generation. I'm not sure why. Even George Lucas admitted in an old interview that he was partly inspired by Flash Gordon and the original Star Trek series so it's at least partly reciprocal. Besides no art is wholly original - Everyone has influences)
As for this movie, I think I only saw it once in the theatre but back then they had these record albums that were sold along with a read along book with pictures from the film in them. I had this one and I listened to it often. However, the soundtrack and my warped little 5yo mind turned it into a decidedly darker movie than what it was.
My favorite sci-fi ship. It looks like a mansion/castle, like a hall of mirrors in space
I’ve watched this movie as a kid.
Scary and fascinating at the same time.
In my opinion one of the darkest movies of Disney pictures.
I’ve watched it few days ago again on disney+ and it is still good 👍
Oh, man, imagine if black holes were actually portals to Hell like this movie shows.
I have decent favorable memories of this. The ship was huge. The plot was some of the darkest Disney I've ever seen in my 60+ years. Without giving any details, I do remember the ending was disappointing.
And now it's more Star Trek than Star Trek.
My dad saw the movie when it came out and said he heard somewhere the ending was trying to be similar to 2001 a space odessy
@@Afmedic85 Even Star Trek tried.
That explosion at 1:45 has always been one of my favorites and the best looking to this day. It gets everything right, the ventilation of atmosphere, scale, color, it's beautiful. And again at 2:51.

@@michaelpolydorou5678 Because this is how starships are meant to be portrayed, as opposed to like Star Trek Nemesis where we see the Enterprise fly around like a starfighter.
They should feel like Battleships. Strong, imposing, but not agile. You want to feel the Strength of them. If you want agility, then watch Star Wars for X-Wings vs TIE Fighters.
Spaceships were even done well in The Last Starfighter. The Gunstar was visibily larger than the enemy fighters, and flew convincingly. It could be fast, but not fast turning, but built to take the hits it was not going to dodge.
I was working at a steel mill when this came out and wondered how long it would take us to make the structural steel for a ship this size.
Unfortunately, we never got to realize the capability of the Cygnus Drive.
"Increasr power to maximum, we are going throgh" If your going into a black hole maximum power is not needed, just let it suck you in.
"I said: blow it apart before it hits us, not MAKE it hit us!?"
What can I say? Reinhardt's confidence in his ability to code AIs was a lot greater than his ACTUAL ability to code AIs.
Was it Maximillian in charge of the ship's guns and targeting or one of the Humanoids? If the latter, maybe it was their last ditch effort at ending their misery...
A drifting city of light and darkness with no sense for orientation, scale or distance in the endless void. Beautiful.
I remember my dad took us to see this when it came out in the theaters back in '79. Maximillian was cool but gave me bad dreams for a few nights
Damn this movie was phenomenal.
Years later, I remember thinking that a few WarHammer ships took styling cues from Cygnus.
Such a great movie. Saw it in the theater when I was a kid and one of the first movies that kinda creeped me out because of the part with professor and max joining at the end there. Later as an adult I thought it very Dante, in fact the whole movie has a bit of that "we're going on a trip to hell" Dante vibe come to think of it :P

I like this Film. Great Performances by Schell and Borgnine, a haunting Score by John Barry, some very impressive Special Effects, a very cool Spaceship with the USS Cygnus and Maximilian is one of the creepiest Robo-Villains ever. Plus, there is that feeling of dread though much of the movie, which is very involving. Its not a *fantastic* film, but I'd still consider it a classic.

Time flies. I was in 6th grade when this movie released. We still have the novel too. I read there was a remake/reboot in the works, but it seems that it has never finished & that the Interstellar movie kinda helped keep that script "adrift" into that black hole called script development hell. But I hope there will be a remake in the future, as long as it's all done properly, of course.

yeah. but that's what they get for starting filming before the script was done.
@@RinoaL Are you sure you aren't confusing it with Star Trek the Motion Picture?
This movie was in the works since the early 70's, just on a real slow burn in development hell.
This film looked old even in 1979. Very poor special effects. Both the Star Wars/Trek franchises were far superior. Disney animation was looking very 'Old hat' compared to the contemporary Industrial light and magic effects from George Lucas.
We often collected movie related Topps cards as kids. This was one of the early films I aggressively collected cards for. As a kid you could easily remember if you come up with a duplicate. In the constellation of Cygnus, there lurks a mysterious, invisible force: the black hole of Cygnus X-1...Six stars of the Northern Cross, in mourning for their sister's loss, in a final flash of glory, never more to grace the night...Where all my Rush fans at, y'all?!?
They should've named one of the ships "Rocinante"
Damals haben sie es drauf gehabt . Haben sich viel Mühe gegeben . Film, Effekte, Schauspieler. Nicht wahr Maximilian. Toll gemacht. Und ein fantastischer Mr. Schell in seiner besten Rolle. Geil.
It's highly memorable. The ending is as eerie as hell. I did like the art direction. I guess they didn't like stressed skin construction, The Cygnus looks like the Eifel Tower.
I love how the $249 Walmart smart TV falls on the commander and pins him.
The most awesome space ship of all times, the magnificent U.S.S Cygnus.
Hugo Drax I think the ship is cool to, it got a unique design.
The Valley Forge from the film Silent Running also had a superstructure with a lot of space-frame/truss sections. It makes sense with such a huge vehicle. I like both space craft.
A fantastic design for its time...love at first sight, when I saw it back in `80
I'd put it in the top 20. The Tardis and The Enterprise are the top 2
I still think it ranked behind the Event Horizon, even after the Cygnus crossed the event horizon. Especially after. Both ships were of similar design. Both were pretty much ghost ships by the time of the storyline.
The book was a little different in that when the Cygnus fires at the Palomino, it's a direct hit but one of the pieces hits a critical part of the Cygnus' engineering area and the damage slows it down enough that the meteorites are able to overtake it. So basically, the Palomino is the reason why the Cygnus isn't able to go through the black hole on its own.
Also if you look at The Black Hole from an artistic standpoint they did a simply outstanding job but I do agree with you that they could taken a little more time to develop the characters and plot. But Max and Reinhardt were fantastic villains.
I love the old school special effects, but the science was just so, so bad. Even the Cygnus turning into the Black Hole to enter it, would in fact cause it to miss entering it, though it would likely be torn apart by tidal forces. Even in the 70's they knew what a retrofire burn was, for getting out of a orbit.
If they really do make a remake of "The Black Hole," I really hope they keep the ship design and the music intact! Oh yeah, and those neat double-barreled laser blasters too. And the robots. And....
All my Lego space soldiers sported a double blaster in each fist thanks to this movie!
Neg Ative Ha! That's awesome.
I've got a feeling if Disney remade this movie it'd wind up being a flop
I'd like for a Black Hole remake to dig further into the backstory and explain what happened with Dr. Reinhardt and the Cygnus' original crew. Did he create Maximilian for the specific purpose of taking over the Cygnus? Maximilian may be Reinhardt's major domo, but he has a distinct "I was created to kill people" vibe.
Perhaps Maximilian's arms could use a more fluid design in a remake, but I do like their "Swiss Army Knife" design. They should definitely keep that function. :-)
Neg Ative
Haha I did that also
So plasma screens did exist in 1979.
So did flying robots lol

I absolutely loved this film though...so marvellous state of the Special FX, I must say for 1979 it was well ahead of its time. Even the black hole was good.
YES they did, STAR TREK had some before 1969. Then APOLLO fiction.

The Cygnus probably took its name from one of the first black holes ever thought to be found - Cygnus X-1.
It was more likely to have been named after the constellation of Cygnus.
