The fact that you try to stay positive, despite some difficulties, makes you a cut above others on UA-cam. It's appreciated
I'm 70 years old. And I still love love love love. Lost in space.
Jst wanted to thank you, Dan. Because of your vid about The Blackhole, I bought and watched the DVD. I had only ever seen bits and pieces and the sight of the little robots mislead me into assuming it was a silly Disney movie.
Boy, was that wrong. While it had a few flaws, it was a very good Sci Fi film, esp. for the time. Pretty dark and thought-provoking. I owe you one for getting me to take another look at it. Thanks again, brother. You're the best. Now, I'm gonna watch this vid...
That was nice hearing Bill Mumy explain why he wasn't in the film. Somehow, somewhere I'd had gotten the idea that there was a filming conflict with Babylon 5 and that's why he wasn't in it...
It's good to see a channel that talks about movies without the intention of just ripping them apart for the sake of ripping them apart.
I met June Lockhart at San Diego Comicon in 2007. I asked her about this remake and she said, "Well, I was in it!" That's all she could say that was positive!
I met Mark at a convention around 10 years ago and asked him about being related to Robert Goddard the father of American rocketry. He confirmed that yes, he's connected to that Goddard family tree. His self published book was a nice look into his former life as an actor. He ended up becoming a Special-Ed teacher. Sort of fitting that a relative of Robert Goddard appeared in such a great series about space travel.
That’s a great but of trivia!
I remember when I first saw it, I thought, "It's a real shame that they couldn't Billy Mumy to play older Will Robinson." Now that I know that they turned him down, I understand why the film had issues.
But It was okay
Penny was a proto-influencer with her little wrist-thingy. Only one year after we knew what Wi-Fi was and seven years before UA-cam, Penny had her “Pennyvision” remarkably forward looking, although maybe by accident.
This is what makes this channel special. Keeping our love for movies, music and monsters as positive as possible . Its not the greatest film in the history,,, but watching it with my grandson was still fun. Cheers Dan.
Another great video. You're really on a streak.
"Roger Houston. And the monkey flips the switch." I still find this quote to be applicable and useful in my work all these years later.
Thanks Dan for taking the high road on this movie. I was so excited to see LIS coming to the big screen. It also gave me a chance to meet the original cast (except Guy Williams). I felt they should have made a sequel. Sometimes it works better than the first. Example, Star Trek: Wrath of Khan. Love your channel.
Lost in Space 1998 was a great film. They don't make them like this anymore.
I loved this movie, I’ve rewatched it many times.
Same here. Rambler-Crain Robots!
It had ❤.
The theme song (by Apollo 440) played at the end credits was kinda cool. It’s on Spotify!
I honestly loved this movie. I totally saw this in theaters and loved every bit. I have it on DVD as well.
There are definitely a lot of good things about it :-)
Aside from being able to buy a really nice Robot toy the redone theme music blew me away. It's so powerful, so driving and then kicks in with the soaring trumpets of the original theme and my spine tingled. I think it's the greatest reimagining of theme music I've ever heard. And is KILLER if you want something to listen to while jogging. Just TRY and keep yourself from sprinting!
The Jupiter 2 looked like a Mercury Sable
Lost in Space needs to get back to and stick to its plots and themes from the first year and only the first year of being shown. That was its best year ever for this sci-fi show.
I can't BELIEVE they told Will Robinson they didn't want him to play Will Robinson!
Wow, no wonder this movie was a bomb.
Makes no sense whatsoever, what were they thinking?
The director was a bubble-headed booby
Being a forever LIS fan and growing up in the 60s and 70s, I absolutely loved the 1998 movie version. And like you said Dan, seeing the original cast was a huge bonus. Then Dick Tufeld Robot voice.. NAILED IT! Another job well done, my good man.😊
Wow. It’s been almost as long from the remake to now, as from the original to the remake. I’m getting old.
Saw LIS on the big screen, (it didn't suck dead cats) and for me the very best moment was hearing Tufeld as the voice of the robot. My wife thought I was having a minor seizsure.
Another great breakdown. I, too, felt disappointed when I left the theatre. I didn't know the story behind Bill Mumy, which was a missed opportunity. I could see that reasoning would better be applied to casting Jonathan Harris, because his Smith leaves a long shadow and the classic fans would just want him on screen more than a cameo.
the holographic overlay of the kid controlling the robot scene was great.
Nothing positive about Lacey Chabert?
She was still doing Party of Five when Lost in Space came to theaters. I was only able to locate a “stinky award for her Supporting Actress role” from a now defunct awards ‘company’ that only lasted themselves from 1997-2006 (that in itself deserves a stinky award of their own). I was disappointed she wasn’t given a bigger role in the movie, but then Angela Cartwright didn’t have much of one in the TV series.
He never even mentioned her name!
The way he has no time for her in this video lol. Shes one of those love them or hate them types like Trance Gemini from Andromeda.
This movie is underrated - it was a decent reimagining
I wish they would have Let Bill play his older self he would have Nailed it Such a mistake !!!
Nothing against Jared Harris Portrail, he was great, but I agree it would have been awesome if Bill played the part
Great video Dan...that had to be difficult, but your positive outlook was the best way, thanks!!
I absolutely LOVE this movie and I grew up in the 60's with the original series. I love this interpretation and how it went all Disney The Black Hole! It was creepy excellent, in my opinion! I have the battery operated Jupiter 2 toy brand new in the box, Too!
I was around the same age as Lacey Chabert was at the time, so she was a major crush of mine back then.
The more recent Netflix version was pretty darn good in my humble opinion.
I never made it past the first ep. But it seemed like it was done with the best of intentions.
As I replied to another comment, it had its flaws but I really liked it too.
Dan, An episode on the forbidden planet and the day the earth stood still would be great. I have enjoyed them all so far great work.😊
So I can be Lost in Space with Mimi Rogers, Heather Graham and Lacy Chalbert. OK I think I can handle that!
Imagine cruise gave up mimic. Far hotter than Nicole ever was and I'm an aussie saying that
@@TheDesertraptor mimi is 68 now, she looks Very different than the hot version we saw in the movie... look her up and google her 2024 images...that said, we all age... she's still a nice looking woman.
I love how you narrated through the whole situation of lost in space. I will be watching your channel for many. Many more years to come home, god bless
Disappointing to hear about Bill Mummy. I didn't know.
Great coverage Dan.
The movie wasn't all bad
but the Space monkey was ridiculous.
Bill Mumy should have gotten his cameo. 😢
They offered him a cameo, he refused because he only wanted to play his old role, just like Harris did.
PS: How about that Lacey Chabert? 🔥
Hello Dan,
Great first name. Thank-you for all your content. Your commentary is always well educated and insightful. While I may know a few facts, you always add more information and a different way to look at things. Thank you so much for all your behind the scenes information.
I know I’m in the minority here, but I enjoyed this version. Although, I agree with everyone that the Blurp was horrible
It was total shit on every level. What did you like about it?
@@docsavage8640Gary Oldman chewing scenery is always a delight, for one.
@@docsavage8640 the robots were cool.
In the time of reinterpretation stories, this was a good movie. You knew the story tell me your version. I'm with you.
I loved this movie
I appreciate your positive spin on this. I saw LIS in the theater with high expectations and ultimately left disappointed primarily with the execution and dialogue. The look was fantastic and I liked the interpretation of the robot. Thanks for another great video
Mark Goddard was great as the General of the Space Station. So was June Lockhart as Will's frustrated teacher. I thought it was clever to use the original voice of the Robot Dick Tufeld in the film. Plus I liked that they stuck to the original premise that was used for the television show before it became more campy. The actor who played the older Will Robinson was good but that part should had been played by Billy Mumy in my humble opinion.
I didn’t HATE the movie but as most folks here I was massively disappointed. So much lost potential. What killed it for me was the dysfunctional family aspect. As a kid who grew up with the original, the Robinsons were the epitome of what I thought a family should be and I dearly wanted that dynamic in my own life.
Similar sentiments here. Too bad the director was only interested in cameos of the previous actors, Billy Mummy as the older Will Robinson would be perfect. The actors did a fine job with a mediocre script. The ship looked like a bad design and I’m an engineer. So the movie is something you can watch casually.
Living in the UK we never get to meet the actors as they don't seem to come over for conventions. The one exception was when I met Marc Goddard back in 1998. I was only 20 at the time and it was literally my first ever convention, but I'm so glad I got to meet him.
I loved this movie when it came out. I even bought the Score in CD.
I liked the film and was a fan of it. I grew up with Lost in Space TV show and this movie was a good modern take on the story. Good video.
I liked it and was hopeful there would have been a sequel! BTW Dan love you don’t use profanity to discuss things and keeping it classy is gonna make your channel grow! Thanks man!
The trailer for this movie was intriguing, well done. I loved the lost in space series and was looking forward to this movie.
I remember when the original Lost in Space series premiered, and I was all excited to watch it. I had really gotten into the comic books version of the Space Family Robinson which is what the series was built on. Which was such a cool idea. In the beginning I did enjoy it. Then Along Came Star Trek, and there was no comparison. I still watched the episodes when I could, but they seemed so silly and childish compared to Star Trek. Then in 97 or 98 when the remake came out, I watched the first few episodes but never got into the whole series, short as it was. As far as the Netflix remake, that was excellent. I enjoyed it immensely still rewatch it even now. The fact that I've been alive through all three incarnations of Lost in Space makes me feel incredibly old.
I only watched the first two seasons of the Netflix lost in space. I got to finish it one of these days :-)
@@MoviesMusicMonsters The first two episodes took effort to get through for me. I almost didn't continue watching it but I'm glad It did. After the initial slow start, I felt the series took off (no pun intended).
I agree that the first 1/3 of the movie was absolutely fantastic. I was on the edge of my seat at that point... but the second half of the movie let me down. And it wasn't the CGI that bothered me, rather it was the script. That being said, I was really, really hoping at the time they'd make a sequel because I felt the cast and overall concept had great potential.
Compared to the Netflix series, this was a masterpiece.
As a life long fan of Lost In Space, I thought this was serviceable at best. I could see where they were going with it, and the little winks and nods here and there to the series. I sat in the theater looking around at the audience, much as I did in 'the Brady Bunch movie', looking for the audience members who would be in for as much for the ride as I was. I did like how they closed out the end credits with the original theme music!
Thnx for the review Dan, and keeping it fun and upbeat! :)
I liked this movie - still watch it once annually.........plus Mimi Rogers and Heather Graham
I have good memories of this movie. It was in one of the high points in my life when everything was going great. I just started college and lived within walking distance of a theater. I would see movies every friday night. This was one of them. Yes it has issues, but it makes me feel happy to watch it.
I really liked the 1998 film remake. I'm dissapointed the director wouldn't let Bill Mumy play his older self in the future. Stupid decision by that director.
“Ugh. Executives…” 😂
@@rogerbourgeois5068 😂
It's unforgivable.
Great job keeping it classy. Thank you for the review.
The trailer was so promising. I even left work early to catch the matinee when it premiered. I was extremely disappointed.
The good things about this movie: Gary Oldman was great, as usual. Mimi Rogers in a space suit. The beginning of the movie showing the preparation and blast off. That's it.
I remember watching it on a hotel pay-to-view service the night I landed in Sans Francisco for a holiday from Wales (‘98). Both my wife and I fell asleep before the end!
If the movie was released today, I'm positive everyone would accuse it of having been written by chatGPT. How many times is the "surprising" answer to the every inescapable emergency going to be "no, we'll fly *through* it!!"
Hey Dan! Enjoyed the Con shots with Deb and you with Mark. Glad to see that y'all don't just talk the talk, you walk the walk!
“And the monkey flips the switch” best line ever!
From what I heard, the response from Jonathan Harris was, "I do Smith, or I do nothing!"
June Lockhart would never have said, "pissing contest".
GREAT LINE.
I still get shivers at Oldman's "Evil knows evil" line. So good.
I am 78. I loved the movie. The Netflix series was great also.
Thanks for this positive video. Some of the "behind the scenes" info was interesting, such as who appeared from the original series and the reason for why other didn't appear. Overall, I liked this version, and I didn't mind the CGI either.
I worked at a drive inn theater when this came out and I'm must of watched it 30 times and additional 10 when it came to VHS and I'm still confused while watching it.
When I saw the film in the theater, they lost all sound for the first five minutes, which made the firefight at the gate into a silent movie. It was interesting, and not half bad that way.
Being a fan of the first season of the TV show more than the latter seasons, the spiders were appropriately Jules Verne-esque, and the derelict ship was more than a little reminiscent of "Rendezvous with Rama", but at that point in cinema, tent-pole sci-fi movies had to have a villain who would die dramatically at the end. Spider Smith let them have that, but let them justifiably keep him too, without ending on a foreboding cliffhanger. (The original Dr. Smith as comedic farce rarely appealed to me.)
I liked the idea of using the Jupiter One design as an initial launch vehicle, but I wish it had been designed to be reusable rather than just exploding.into orbital debris. And yes, they should definitely have hired Bill Mumy as the elder Will Robinson.
I liked the film because the plot felt just a little more like classic Science Fiction adventure than a '90s SciFi shoot-em-up. To be honest, the only thing I really hated was Blarp. But then, I was never fond of the space monkey on the TV show either.
My favorite line was "...and the monkey flips the switch..."
I always kinda liked this version, Blawp aside. Some of the new designs hold up for me. I was a bit shocked at the time, but the initial updated version of the robot really grew on me, and I think he's still pretty cool.
As someone who “grew up” watching the original series (and even had the toy ray gun and robot) ……. you are being very kind !
CRUSH!! KILL!! DESTROY!! Never said by the robot in the original series but a killer android. I remember all the boys running around the playground the day after it ran originally as a kid shouting that line!
Revolt of the Androids. Great Episode. That was Don Matheson who played I.D.A.K. Alpha 12 that recited that line who also was a cast member on Land of the Giants.
I loved this movie as a child. Wore out my vhs copy
Hi from ex amgfx .. we were one of about 200 vfx houses worked on the movie .. all the exterior shots of the ship had the spiders on it that we also blew up ... One of the better set of shots in the movie 😅
UK london Soho at time
Thanks, I always consider watching the movie again because you bring out the good.
In the latest remake Bill Mummy did get to play the real.Dr. Smith. A tribute to his friend.
I liked it... There were some very cool future time slip scenes that were cut where the blurp was absolutely huge. The effects were mostly fantastic especially the SGI CGI, for the late 90's. Considering how long scenes took to render back then.....
...Also, Spider Smith was truly creepy.
But, BILL SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN IT.
Even though it had a great cast I'm not wild about this movie either. They should have let Bill Mumy play the older Will Robinson. That would have been so totally cool! It would have been such a great homage to the classic series. What is it with these execs???
They are brainless bean counters who don't even like the things they are rebooting!
Thank you Dan for your channel, love it and i have fun turning the clock back and having fun remembering when and where i first saw the movies you pick.
Crazy but.... I still loved this film...
End credit lost in space tune... Still sounds amazing...
Dan how about an episode about.... YOU..
Your history will be fascinating to us all...
Love the show. 😊😊
Great take on this one, like you said, it is easy to hate on this movie. I liked it for what it was, the practical effects, some of the performance and the soundtrack! I would have loved to see a sequel but the numbers just weren’t there.
Would like to see a Lost in Space movie that picks up where it left off with the original ship and robot and of course as many of the original cast as possible. Truly being lost in space would not mean that they had their ship or the robot totally redesigned. The movie should be a continuation of their survival. Why doesn't some movie company realize that?
I was working at Toys R Us when the trendmaster toys hit for this movie. Trendmaster did an excellent job on this property and Godzilla of the same year, despite both movies being less than well received. It’s a shame the company folded not soon after.
That movie holds the honor of finally dislodging Titanic from the number one spot after several months.
Great video Mr. Monroe. As a fan of the original series I'm not disappointed that I've never seen this.
The fact that Billy Mumy was not included to play that role is a crime against humanity that cannot be forgiven!
You can forgive now, because he did appear in the 2018 TV series. OK?
Another cool look behind the scenes, Dan! You focused on the positives in a movie that wasn't horrible, but could've been so much better.
I liked the movie.. They did the best job they could fitting multiple seasons worth of material into just couple of hours. DANGER. Oh the pain. If Dr. Smith can be turned into a stalk of celery... then he can be turned into a spider. He still had the "I'm better than you" and "I need to get to Earth worse than anyone else" vib, even as a spider. OK.. the Blarp was stupid, but any more stupid than the Blip
Great review. mirrored my views completely on the film. I wish some studio would try a remake based on the Gold Key comic book versions(which may have inspired the TV series) the comic had some really cool-looking Spacecrafts.
I loved this film. I thought Judy was slightly too insulting toward the Major, and I hated Bloop in the original series, as well. This reminded me of the few episodes of the reruns I saw in the 1970's. I have no idea what people have against it.
Yep, filmed in Shepperton Studios in the U.K. and at the time I was working there, not production related. But my work did allow me the freedom to walk around the sets.
I always liked this movie. Number one reason? Lacy Chabert. Yes she was only 14-15 when she made this movie but you could see that she would be a beautiful woman. Number two, Gary Oldman. I thought he was a great Dr Smith. Number three, at the end of the movie when they escaped from the planet and Major West punched Dr Smith it was wide open for a sequel. The writers had infinite storytelling possibilities. I'm like YEAH! But alas, it never happened.
I remember going to a computer lab in college in 1997 and watching a grad student run a station with 4 different Silicon Graphics computers compiling at the same time. Around the same time, we had folks from one of the entertainment groups giving presentations on campus, showing us clips from the first Men in Black movie, trying to recruit students. Cutting edge stuff at the time. You have to put it in perspective of the time when most people didn’t have email, let along a basic cellular phone.
Dan, I love your videos on old movies and props. Do you know what happened to the robot drones from the movie "Silent Running"?
great show, I do like the practical effects, especially anything with the Jupiter 2
I actually liked the shell of the Jupiter 1 blowing off on launch and having the Jupiter 2 underneath.
Great video, Dan! When I first got into DVD, this was the first movie I saw on my new player. I'm not sure if it was the movie I enjoyed, or if I were merely enjoying the spectacle of watching a movie on DVD for the very first time. I tried watching it again at some point and discovered it's not as good as I remembered. But any movie with Hurt and Oldman can't be all bad. Thanks for posting, Dan!
I was just about to post the same comment. I think the player came with 3 DVDs and this was one of them.
I have nostalgia for the movie being the 1st DVD I watched.
It's amazing how many times it has happened that a studio wants to make a movie version of some beloved TV show and the first thing they think to themselves is, "I wonder how much we can totally change this into something that bares no resemblance to the source material?" If this movie had been released as something else (not a remake of Lost in Space) I think it might have been better received. But as a tribute to the classic TV show it just rubbed too many people the wrong way.
I call the movie by it's best line: "And the monkey flipped the switch." Good and fun by silly and dumb in many ways. Yet a spiritual successor to the series.
Matt Leblanc was superb in this. He's never been better.
Speaking of 'keeping it positive', a positive memory I have of seeing the film in Columbus, OH opening weekend was that it coincided with a comic book event that had invited Star Wars trilogy legend David Prowse. After the event, David went to see Lost In Space to catch the cameo of his pal, Mark Goddard. As luck would have it, my wife and I spied him in the cineplex lounge after the screening and chatted with him for several minutes. Mr. Prowse as always, was a gentleman and forever the Star Wars goodwill ambassador.
