- In this lesson we review how to tow a vehicle using "skates." (Part 2 of 2)
Skates are a set of tools that are used for a scenario when the vehicle will not roll. (Key are lost, car stuck in gear) Follow along and master your skating technique.
This free course covers everything you need to know to become a successful tow truck operator in 2020 - 2021.
I explain how the truck operates, daily inspections, tricks of the trade and what equipment you'll be using day to day.
I also walk you through specific circumstances from start to finish, so that you can practice over-the-shoulder of a PRO.
Lastly, I walk you through my customer service process and share a few tips from my 30+ years in the towing industry.

I appreciate your real world lessons am 71 and getting back into towing after 40 + years.... vary cool of you to do these videos..thank you
Really appreciate the mistakes not being edited out, makes the learning experience more valuable thanks from a rookie tow op
Happy to help!
I’m 2 moths in being a tow truck driver and I did this on a truck with no skates on my 4th day. 😅. I literally did this same exact process. The front wheels did rotate so that made it easier but ahh man the headache that was to do that job especially by myself was great experience.
I have never in my life seen someone manually push a car off their bed when using skates 😅
Great video I’m new to the towing scene an what I have found that helps me tremendously is keeping a bottle of dish soap in my truck you can get a good size bottle of generic dish soap at dollar tree for a buck so when your skis are giving you a hard time dab a line of soap from front to back on the bottom of the ski then put it back under the wheel as long as your car is still secured with your j hooks then you have no worries of the car sliding to much or to quickly it has saved me countless amounts of time when unloading hardheaded vehicles like that one 👍🏽
That’s why I carry 2 jacks on my truck I’ll jack up both side if it really doesn’t wanna come off and that will give me plenty of clearance to roll my bed out without dragging the bumper. Especially on some of these luxury vehicles that don’t have hook points where I need to v strap it jacking it just gives me more room to reach under there and unhook.
Smart to leave that last strap on. The old guys who trained me always did that, good habit to show off. Stay safe! 💖💖
Water and soap 🧼 with skates is your best friend take notes 📝
Very old school . Reminds me of my old man . Love your videos brother and stay safe on the roads .
Thanks 👍
I think its a better idea to pick up from the back and once the front wheels hit the ground then you can drive the truck forward. However this is best for uni body FWD SUV. Because if you shake the bed to get the front wheels off you can damage the front bumper too.
Dude I hate to break it to you and bust your bubble but you're fired
My gosh , reminds me of office mgr trying show tradesman skills.
I do appreciate all the info thank you I’m trying to start my business in Louisville now so wish me luck and good luck to you always
OG 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you DR Smith
Great video! You really helped me and thank you! I liked the entire video
Glad to hear it!
Great video Thank you!!
Greetings from Russia! clearly a professional in his field! I just watched on UA-cam how tow truck operators work in Japan, of course their equipment is good, you can’t argue with that, but they walk around in helmets and work very slowly😁 Why are there no new? videos?
I appreciate it for the videos I. been learning a lot from you sir thank you sir
Brilliant 👏
You made it hard on yourself
I mostly struggle with all wheel drive 👀 but usually I just tilt the bed as high as I can and shake it till the back wheels is at the very edge of the bed then I roll the bed out and walk the truck 👀
Done that exact thing twice today. Used some good ole wd 40 let her slide on down.
Thank you you are appreciated
Thank you!
Great video but you wore me out just watching you, now I know the kind of problems I will expect 😂
If you had legal access to the vehicle , why not use the shift lock over ride ?
Neutral override for me
What do you do when an AWD SUV does not have enough height clearance to be towed?
The apartment complex has very low clearance and 3 tow companies have told me to use rollers to push it to the street.
Brand new 2023 Mazda, Vehicle does not turn on and also gears are stuck.
How high is that engine RPM with the PTO ? Sounds like it is going to take off !
thanks for video, 2nd week on job, have better idea of methods to get vehicle now. do a video of attaching winch and attachments half the vehicles that claim tow points cant find them so i strap it. is this common. mind you I got 50 hours of experience, thanks.
I find it funny that you left the last strap on for safety but yet you still had your J Hooks on it your Bridal so that was ridiculous made no sense
Would it be easier to just use the wheel lift. I struggle with these often.
You guys do courses training? And where are you located?
can you do a video on how tie down motorcycle
You really have perfected your trade. Others compared to you seem disorganized, ineffecient, stumbling and fumbling. If you do replies what is the bed length of this truck.
Thank you sir. The bed length of this Jerr-Dan is 19 ft .
No manual override for neutral? Small cover near shifter
Hi every one . Why don't you use tow eye bar? Thanks.
I keep four big bottles of dish soap on my truck just wonders never use skates
I make them too I thought it was just me🤷🏿♂️
If there’s no key why was it dinging like the key was in the ignition? The lights weren’t on either. Asking not being a smart butt.
Skates are not the right tool for the job on a bed that is full of ridges. They might do ok on a smooth floor steel bed. Wheel dollies are the best tool for the job . whoever will make a successful wheel dolly for the rollback industry is going to make a ton of money. I am surprised that none of the big players in the industry like "in the ditch" , "collins", or "go jack" did not jump on the opportunity.
I could have towed 6 cars in the time he took to unload .... Minkya
Should have used a wheellift.
A flat head puts that car in neutral
How do you roll a car backward that's brakes are locked up or in park? Now in reality the car won't move. You'll need to reverse skate with the winch And a shit ton of dish soap and have a truck that's bed goes high or quick enough to rock it off. "That's the thing that sucks about skates"🤣🤣🤣
He messed up that’s why he didn’t show you the rest if he pulled that bed up it was gonna hit that bumper
Put a little dawn dish soap on bed it will slide off
Fail you are fire damage vehicle 😂😂😂😂
Lmfao this dude don’t know what the hell he’s doing 😂😂😂
Amen to that brother and he took two God damn long I've had rookies go faster than that grease that b**** up Let it Rip it's only going to roll off so far it'll stop when it gets off to bed but livable
20 minutes later it's still not off the f****** truck you're fired
@@jamesmunn4689 😂😂😂😂
And he's the owner/boss/trainer 😳
Reaching under that front wheel to unhook had me cringing , wait until it’s off the bed and unhook from the front.
I don’t recommend your ways or techniques.
