  • A training video for beginner tow truck drivers. In this lecture, we will be reviewing how to on-load a truck/larger vehicle using a 4-point tie down system with j-chains and cluster straps.
This free course covers everything you need to know to become a successful tow truck operator in 2020 - 2021.
I explain how the truck operates, daily inspections, tricks of the trade and what equipment you'll be using day to day.
I also walk you through specific circumstances from start to finish, so that you can practice over-the-shoulder of a PRO.
Lastly, I walk you through my customer service process and share a few tips from my 30+ years in the towing industry.

I was taught when hooking that first safety chain, always stay in front of the tire and reach under to hook it. If that winch or cable let go when you were hooking that first safety chain, it would have crushed your head.

I noticed that as well. Then I couldn’t remember if he put it back in park.

The gloves for anyone wondering is a wreckmaster taught trick, You lower the bed and extend it all the way out, You count your normal steps from the end of the bed to the rear axle, Then when you come up to a car your going to tow when you go back to greet you, customer, when returning to your truck you will stand where you want the bed to end up, you will walk the previously counted steps drop a glove then you will back up til your rear axle hits that glove and your bed will stop exactly where you started your steps at, Personally I just know where my bed will end up by experience but you can do that trick if you need to.
As for the front two chains if you are going to do that, I would just recommend getting 2 chain binders and putting them on there as it is 2 easy safe and legal points of tie-down out of 4, And they will be strong and safe, and if you are putting the chains anyway you might as well, Because the chains alone as shown even though they may be tight, they are not considered tie-downs.
Same with rear chains, we all do it, throw some chains on the rear tighten it with the winch throw on some safeties or straps in the front and roll-on, It's secure that way, you may never run into issues that way, but if DOT or fmcsa is strict in your area they will bust your ass for it if you put chain binders on the 2 chains they become legal tie-downs.
Technically as shown his method is 2 points of tie-down out of the required 4, The reason being you see 2 chains and 2 straps and thing that's 4, but each tie down has to be independent and adjustable, Ratches are adjustable, chains are not, chains with binders are adjustable so they count with binders, Either type, but they have to be independent of one another AND adjustable, So you cant legally do as shown because even though the rear straps will keep tension on the front chains they are not independently adjustable.

Might want to put the vehicle back into park or manual low gear (and apply emergency brake) before wrestling chains under the wheels.

Everybody does theirs different yes .
I 100% of the time load , strap front tire , then jump up there place in park and set emergency brake. I know people don’t like jumping up and down the bed but I rather have 100% control of the vehicle at all times

Might not be your problem, but our f550 the kid would say the PTO was real slow, but he never knew to engage the parking brake, once that’s engaged it picks up the rpms to efficiently use the hydraulics, again I’m sure it’s not your issue but might help someone else out

Don’t use that hole on a diesel motor truck! The bridal will crush the oil filter every time! Those back straps are in a dangerous spot. When you pull like that on those Mini J’s they will pop out when pulling under the frame of the truck

Yeah, I had some cringe watching the mini-J pulling downward. I prefer the "R" hook, when possible, pulling straight back.

Do you recommend only using the big j on the chain or could you use the mini j ??
What would be the safest way vv

    • @mimief7969

You can use a mini-J or T-hooks on a truck this size, just find some points and shorten the bridle.

What grade chain would you recommend for 3500 trucks and below??

    • @towtruckaj
      @towtruckaj 3 роки тому

do the math, truck probably weights in around 6000 pounds, 4 points of contact.
Regular chain you will most easily find for these is g70 3/8 chain that has a WLL of 6600 pounds, Times 4 well exceeds the weight of a 3500 truck.

Just my opinion. Never ever load a car in N. That wench breaks you just bought a car or killed someone. You can apply the E break just a little so it won't free roll.

Brian Mallow I’ve been thinking a lot about that during my career towing I’m not a fan knowing that winch cable can go at any minute that’s why I’ll typically immediately strap the front left (closest wheel to the controls) or throw it in park but keeping in mind the extra strain on the winch and the idea of a car rolling off isn’t great, I’ve made the mistake (usually on the side of the freeway trying to be quick) lay under the truck as I hook the axle and snug it with the winch knowing it can fail and roll off but I’ve been learning more and more each day

I run a 15ft safety chain that I hook onto the bridle once the vehicle gets a couple feet on the deck. You could use a strap also. Cheap insurance.
