Ford guy : ☹️
Agreed. One of the weirdest things I've seen
@CockYaLegS
blah-blah-blah, they'd be better off either with a CRY02 system to use CO2 to force cool the pipe...I've done it with a 20oz Paintball CO2 tank before with a stainless steel braided _Paintball Remote Tank Line_ into a hole I drilled into an Autozone cold air intake and a fitting I made myself with parts I found by chance at a hardware store in Ashland, Massachusetts which isn't even there anymore last I saw... I opened the remote line valve, it sprayed CO2 straight into the cold air intake pipe, and SOMETHING DEFINITELY HAPPENED....

This is the worst placement for a turbo IMO. What happens when they lose a universal joint and sling the driveshaft out beating the turbo to death in the process.

@@codyparker679 The long run from the turbo back to the engine acts like a intercooler
@@shigeolincolntaco Yeah, however with this whole lot of piping your turbo lag is enormous. To spool up your turbo you need to wait a while and to compress air in pipe so long it takes time too.

The first gen Lighting will always be my favorite.
Love this one for sure!
Miss our old 94 Lightning we had 2000-2006. Stock engine..Vortech S trim @ 15 psi,Powerstroke intercooler, long tubes....made well into the mid 400s and ran 12.0's @ 113-114 with the stock convertor and just a Level 10 shift kit in the trans. EEC tuner still with the stock speed density.
Let's put this 75mm throttle body up against the stock small bore EGR spacer. I'm sure it will help...
That's what I was thinking.
Get the same flow as the stock tb
I think this all looks fairly futile... Probably end up with an extra 50 horses from when it was new.
hearin ya but isnt that spacer still bigger than 75 mm
Yeah theyre gonna make MAYBE 300whp on this turd
Remove the spacer and delete the EGR. The added pressure differential inherent with turbocharging makes egr tuning difficult and is why most manufacturers now simulate egr with variable cam timing.
How to spray wd40 on the floor
Hope that throttle body was port matched to the intake manifold.
Otherwise you get the same flow as the old throttle body.
Well it was a BBK throttle body anyways ive seen a few of them fall apart while making runs on dyno
You have it backwards. The manifold to the throttle body but the restriction is actually the factory size EGR spacer. Don’t understand why they didn’t also get the EGR spacer
Oh baby, good luck having that turbo sitting under there. You're gonna hydrolock rolling over a spilled soda.
@Adam Lolno hydrolocking is when you intake a liquid (almost always water of some sort, rain, wading through a river etc) into the motor and cylinders. Water is a lot denser than air, and it cant be compressed as well. Your pistons rise in the cylinders and try to compress something that doesnt compress and your motor almost 99% of the time is completely trashed, like throwaway worthy. His intake (the filter on the turbo) is under the car.... with no shield.... on a lowered truck.... you get me?
They mentioned making a sheet metal splash shield
There is this new thing the kids are doing called rain, but whatever. Fucking pointless with that big ugly charge pipe and blow off under the hood anyway. And the air is probably gonna be hot as hell by the time it hits the intake as well.
Sixth Lord the air will be hot because it’s compressed. All of the extra tubing actually will help dissipate heat like a charge air cooler.
@@Highstranger951 I think it will not due to the fact that all that extra intake is routed so close to the exhaust
It was cute when he said it has to pass emissions.
Brian Adams hank hill wouldn’t ever miss an emissions test
I know the pipe running back to the front from the rear mounted Turbo is supposed to help cool the charge. but I'm sorry I'd never put a turbo on without an intercooler. Plus that return pipe is too close to the exhaust you're going to get heat soak I don't care what they say he needs some kind of heat shield on it

Damn! Powernation is on top of things. Love love love all the videos on a daily basis! Reminds me of watching spike tv back in the day on Saturday/Sunday mornings.
The Ford is going to hit peak boost by the time the race is over is all that turbo lag. Lol.
Really sweet turbo set up. I must say, I would want to be able to drive during the rain and don't really see that being realized with where the turbo is. Can't wait to see the dyno pulls for both these.
That's a horrendous valve cover modification.
You bet, we all know if you want to increase HP you gotta dent the headers not the valve covers.
All that work to those trucks and still slower than a stock GMC Syclone.
Doesn't want turbulence into the MAF but then puts a BOV immediately in front of it...
no one cares what the engine does after you let off the throttle tho. It might cause it to pop and sputter, but that 5.0 will be at 4.5k - 2.5k RPM, and will just be free spinning, with minimal fuel and wear on the motor. Also not out of the realm to hear at a Street orientated Drag night. hell, Sloppy mechanic's Matt has been doing BOV next to the MAF for years at this point on his chevy builds
thats a good idea , as it vents pressure not exactly large amounts of air, and its venting pre maf , so the maf dont know about that air.
@@themotorfreak1 Just to let you know, the Lightning's came with a 351 Windsor 5.8, not a 5.0. Both great engines though!
Tony K holy fuck these idiots would've been better off just throwing some good heads a good cam and a decent intake on it.....
@@themotorfreak1 exactly, people are just idiots.
When I was 18 I worked at a buy here, pay here dealership and he got on a pickup kick. For some reason he bought a red 93 Lightning 351 and a black 90 Chevy 454SS at auction and I drove them both because I grew up in the 80s and 90s, so these trucks were icons. The 454SS was quick, but in stock form other than an exhaust, it wasn't very much faster than a standard single cab 350 1500. The Lightning felt totally different from a standard 302 powered F-150, or even a 351 powered F-250. It was quick and powerful and it actually handled decently after we replaced the shocks, springs, and all bushings. I honestly couldn't imagine turbocharging that truck, and if the engine is healthy enough without blowby and no oil consumption, it'll handle more than 7-10 lbs of boost with supporting mods like new quality MLS head gaskets, head studs, a boost focused cam, maybe some heads (but not necessary), bigger injectors, larger fuel pump, and a standalone engine management system like Megasquirt or AEM. With a good tune that 351 with the STS kit should have no problem making 6-700 whp (depending on how big the exhaust housing is on that turbo and how much boost it's capable of producing. That being said, you could always upgrade the turbocharger later down the road. The same could be said for that 454, but it can also be Procharged...😉
I don't ever remember the 454SS being an 'icon'. It was universally dogged by everybody when it came out. Absolutely no one liked that truck, not even us GM guys, lol. And you will NEVER get 6-700hp at 7-10 psi on that 351. ESPECIALLY with those crap cast-iron GT-40 heads, LOL.
Glad to see E-40 is still expanding his business model ! Rapper, entertainer, entrepreneur, transmission designer...…...uhg!!!
Lord, can only imagine the boost creep with that wastegate placement.
It has to feel laggy to with all that tubing from turbo to engine.
What about the turbo lag with the turbo placement ?
That placement is optimal. When the wastgate opens, the exhaust wants to flow straight into the wastgate rather than turning 90 degrees up into the turbo. They did a great job.
@bobwatters turbo placement is just fine, with a splash shield you wont have to worry about much.
@@madmax2069 but what concerns me with the pod filter getting drenched driving in a rainstorm with the mist of water underneath the truck from the tires

The Lightening with the supercharger is no joke!
Michael Cuff ... Adding a supercharger doesn't lighten the vehicle. Or were you talking about two different procedures? Lightening the vehicle elsewhere and then adding a supercharger to the lightened vehicle? Lightening about any vehicle will help with acceleration if enough weight is removed. Of course it needs to be taken from an area that won't reduce drive tires traction, or it could be detrimental to actual acceleration, due to wheel spin.

Even the supercharged Lightning got torched by the GMC Syclone. Which is the fastest stock production truck ever built. That record still stands today.
Guardrail nope, Roush Nitemare has held the record for a year or two. Before that the ram srt10 was holding the trophy. The syclone has been defeated for years.

@@JW...-oj5iw Oops.

Catalytic placed pre turbo is a terrible idea. Always mount post turbo
Exactly. You will be forced to install the oxygen sensors in the pressure side of the exhaust system then. Wideband (and to a lesser extent narrowband) oxygen sensors will have their results skewed by the pressure differential between the sense element and ambient. AEM makes a kit for their multiple wideband controller that includes an exhaust MAP sensor and can compensate accordingly, but thats so far the only kit I know of that can do that function. You also have to deal with the increased heat levels pre turbo.
Bought one of these STS kits 3 years ago used for $250 and cut it up to build a turbo kit for my ls swapped C10. That little T66 turbo was a bit laggy as a rear mount but lit off right off idle mounted up front behind a 6.0. Of course it had so much back pressure it felt like I was actually losing power above 5000rpms. 🙄
Holly mother of lag 😬😬

I almost fell out of my chair when he said they were switching from a speed density setup to a mass air sensor to accommodate for a turbocharger! I can only assume thats to keep it "plug and play" because they can't tune it themselves. Seems like a lot of money wasted to essentially take a step backwards.
15 years ago, everbody did it this way. Not sure why, maybe stand alone speed density was too expensive. I'm going with Holley Terminator X for my sbf
@@benruether8294 I did a speed density stand alone on my 1988 Mustang in 2004, from Western Motorsports called the SDS, it cost about $1400 or so back in those days and was not quite plug and play but close. The car ran great like that for about 14 years and now has a Holley HP EFI in it.
@@ProfessorLX I'm dealing with my stock cobra j3jl computer at the moment which has the worst spark tables known to man. Lol, it will be gone soon for my next engine coming around spring next year.
@Brian My point is speed density is much easier and better to tune with when you are able to make your own fuel and timing maps and tune yourself. Mass air is a lot more "user friendly" so to speak so I get why they used it in this episode. I was also shocked that he put the mass air sensor right before the TB. That's kind of an old school cheater trick I've seen used in the old Mazdaspeed crowd. Believe me I'm all for the down and dirty tricks that work and don't cost a fortune.
@Brian There were other ways to tune a Ford back then. I wasn't talking about a stock Ford ECU though. They basically just piggybacked the stock ecu which was the norm for most backyard hot rodders back then.

I always had a hard time waking up Sunday mornings to watch these shows. Pretty fun being able to watch them!
let's put a turbo behind a hot engine and above a hot exhaust.
If you knew anything... remote turbos run cooler than engine mounted turbos. Aaannnnnddddd last I checked, turbos RUN off of heat anyway, sooo mild efficiency loss... But being a few inches away (hot side vs cold side) will NOT make that much of a difference. If they were incontact with each other I could see an issue.
It will survive longer remotely mounted, as it won't see the same heat cycling. A proper intake will give the turbo zero issues from ingesting debris. To anyone chirping lag... Minimal lag from remote mount turbo, this isn't a 1000whp beast with 90mm turbos, people that don't know boost, chirp about *lag*... size your exhaust appropriately (not using 4 inch hot side throughout, yes 2 inch works just fine on a truck V8 at those power levels) and learn how to weld so your pipe joints don't look like clusters of grapes (no leaks)... No intercooler required when you have 12-15 feet of boost tubing running through the air.
*I love all the youtuber comments from boys that think they own/run race teams... This a JUST above stock truck...nothing more
Turn off Forza/Gran Turismo and get out of your mama's basement!*
The first gen Lightning is the one of the coolest vehicles made since the '60s and early '70s. The SS is cool but it didn't get the attention it should have. I would have supercharged the SS.
A supercharged BB would make a beast. The worst thing about BBs was their compression... And cooling, but I'll ignore that part
@@abo3abid1 you got me there. But they wouldn't have to make the boost something ludicrous, just enough to get some power over the Lightning and to hear that whine from SC belt.

How to get maximum turbo lag.
Won't be bad... One thing they should've done though is put the cats AFTER the turbo!
"Hey Tommy, grab the mallet for these new valve covers we put on!"
Yes!!!!!! Was waiting for episode 3!
That Watergate placement is fuckin mint
A tailpipe turbo is stupid so much extra tubing and oil lines what happens if it rains and you won’t make as much boost cuz the speed of the exhaust slows down towards the end would of been better with an engine bay turbo
Well guess if it rains turn the boost up and that stock egr spacer with bigger tb and boost great idea.
A Matt Happel LS swap would be cheaper and make more HP. But when big companies buy you shit I guess they won't complain
I think the turbo setup hurt me physically I know this aired 10+ years ago but good god.
Ugh. Speed density vs mass air flow doesn't matter for tuning what matters more is how tunable the stock ecu is and the limit of the stock MAP sensor. Even a MAF can be just as limited if it's not big enough for the airflow.
Wrap the exhaust pipe, or have it ceramic coated. It's the heat that drives the turbo. The gases expand when they cool. You don't want them to lose heat before use.
There used to be a band called Lagwagon and they rocked. They should name this truck Lagwagon in tribute to the band and in reference to the 15sqft of intake that has to be pressurized before boost comes on.
E-4-OD not E-40-D
They say this because it's quicker to say, rolls off the tongue better. Similar to when someone refers to a mustang w/ the 5.0L, they say 5O

No mention of welding wire dags going into the turbo (BAD) or rusty flakes of metal going into the engine (BAD) but you'll laugh at the original guys exhaust.
I'm not even going to bother to mention the 48 feet of pipe or the million bends.
Bigger TB does no good with the stock size spacer. Remote mount turbos are too laggy unless you have really small AR which isn't going to make as much top end so two would work. Me and my father did a remote mount on a 03 Silverado about 6 years ago with a 72mm and I believe a .96 AR and it was super laggy. This engine can handle 5x the boost there throwing at it.

Edit- it's starting to more and more sound like they just really have no idea wtf they are doing. Throttle body let's more fuel into the engine? Seriously???
couple things here,
1) the long run of cold side piping does offer some cooling effect
2) the fact that they are only running 5 PSI of boost means they won't be generating much heat in the charge air anyways.
3) its a stock untouched engine, meaning no ARP hardware to help keep the heads down, no metal head gaskets etc.
This isn't meant to make 1000 hp, its just to bump up the factory numbers and have some fun.
ProfessorLX still the risk of detonation is worth at least an air to air. It means better engine health and no reason to need higher octane even at the track. Also it would have been nice to see some exhaust wrap or some insulation around the cold side plumbing
Frozen boost systems are cheap! Should have picked one up.
This channel is awesome
I'd like to hear from someone who has run the Turbo underneath. Doesn't seem like a good plan to me.
It's not so much lag the hoonigans have one on s*** car and it's terrible
I had a rear mount on a '00ramair, worked ok.. but I'd go with front mount if I done it over myself!
People only do that when they can't fit the shit under the hood. There's no benefit to it
@@jaystein1405 It's a F-150! You could fit a few of these turbos inside that damn hood bay alone with a intercooler and the appearance and air flow would be much more than what you got here!
That filter is gonna get dirty pretty quick under the truck like that. Said he was gonna make a shield but never saw one
FILTER GET DIRTY?: Not really, washable oil-wetted filters don't filter worth a fuck they are essentially strainers. Much of the dust/dirt landing on the filter pass through it.
Everyone on about turbo lag but where is the intercooler??? They just gonna throw all that hot air in the engine?? WTF
