Thanks so much for your review of this song. It has been very important to me for many years. After enduring a shockingly brutal divorce I was convinced that the only way to preserve what was left of my soul was to live my life alone. Ten years later my high school sweetheart found this 'desperado' and taught me how to love and live again. We have been married now for 23 wonderful years. Her message to me at the time was much the same as this song - which she played for me many times.

THE SUMMER OF 1977 I followed Linda Ronstadt 5 New England state and saw 6 Concert with my friends or by myself or Made friends at the concert... Amazing summer 1977.
Desperado was the title cut from the Eagles 2nd album. Dolly Parton said of Linda, "Most singers sing what they can. Linda sings what she wants".
Linda Ronstadt had the most beautiful voice on the planet until it was taken away by a neurological disorder. She is an American treasure and has won numerous awards and accolades. Her catalogue spans more than forty years and includes multiple genres. Her work is worth a deep dive. She could literally sing anything. She made two albums of songs sung in Spanish in which she honors her Mexican heritage. I cannot say enough in praise of this stunningly talented woman. Nice reaction. 🌺✌️

If one doesn’t have a strong voice, firm and clear, one will get drowned out by the mariachis. En La Charreada, Ronstadt demonstrates her mastery from her first breath.

Linda started out as a country singer. Her album Hand Sewn, Home Grown is from that period. I think you would love it. My favorite song from it was "The Only Mama That'll Walk the Line." She performed it on Johnny Cash's variety show. It's on UA-cam.
The day Elvis died -- August 16, 1977 -- I attended a show Linda gave. Between songs, male voices from all places in the crowd were bellowing, "Desperado!" Finally she relented. An instant hush fell over the place, with her voice just ringing as she sang, exactly as she sings in this video.
The word was that her management decided to keep from her the news of Elvis's death, so she didn't find out until after the concert. (It was part of the tour from which this video is taken.) Certainly she didn't mention Elvis during the concert, nor did her opening act, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen (featuring Nicolette Larson).
Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock & even opera. She has had so many hits such as "Blue Bayou", "Different Drum", "Long Long Time", "You're No Good", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "When will I Be Loved" etc. Ronstadt also did two great duets, "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram) & "Don't Know Much" (with Aaron Neville). The Eagles were her backing band till they went out on their own & she has covered a lot of their songs. Also love her collaborations with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris.

The greatest voice of the 20th century. She not only could, but did, sing anything she wanted. The first female artist ever to fill arenas and do an Arenas tour. Nowhere near appreciated as she should be.
This song was written by the Eagles, the great rock band of the Hotel California fame. Linda was very close with these artists during their career and sang with them on many occasions. As a result, when she chooses to sing their material without an aggressive rock band behind her the beauty of the song and her voice jumps out and the lyrics are on display. I have understood why this format of contemporary people analyzing these old popular songs from the 70's and earlier is so appealing. It is the music I grew up on and since I owned record stores in my university years and beyond, almost all this material is constantly playing in my head if I want to bring it up. Now I am in my 70's and I see kids like you discovering these gems and it makes me smile and remember the past, and this was the soundtrack to my life. I am so glad you enjoy these gems. Find songs on UA-cam where Linda sings these songs of the Eagles with them. They are special.
More than close. She pretty much gave Don Henley and Glenn Frye their start. They played for her and were offered a more permanent gig with her, but they wanted to their own way, and she was totally supportive of them doing that. She actually gave quite a few artists their kick start, or at least a nice boost up.

Red Rocks summer of 77. her 3rd encore was desperado. I was about 20 feet from her. Between the stage and the crowd barrier. I fell in love forever.
My friend died in 1996 on Mt Everest. This song was played at his service. I cry every time I hear it!

Linda Ronstadt has a Mexican mother and a father of German heritage. She was raised in Tuscon, Arizona.

Linda Ronstadt's Mexican heritage was through her father (though the name is German). He was basically of three quarters Mexican and one quarter German descent. Her mother was ostensibly of German, English, and Dutch descent.

I very much enjoyed your reaction, Maddy. The song isn't about depression. It's the title track of the Eagles album -- the entirety of which subtly draws a parallel between the gunslingers of the Old West and modern-day rock stars.
You should listen to the group's version of this sung by Don Henley. It's essentially about how the ego could take the old gunslinger and today's rock gods and isolate them from what matters.
I saw this tour in Houston. Don Henley of the Eagles wrote it with some additions from Glenn Frey. Before they were the Eagles they were backing Linda. I saw her with them as backup including Randy Meisner, 3 future Eagles. Glenn played piano and wrote the intro. Linda got confused and said Glenn wrote it then corrected herself after the song. She recorded it first then the guys did their version as the Eagles a bit later. All 3 I mentioned were great songwriters. i saw her 4 times live. She was the best.
I just saw this today. In 1977 I was 18 years old and I was absolutely in love with Linda Ronstadt. I was also a huge Eagles fan so I loved her cover of this song. Your expression when she first belted out was great.
Wow! Linda is the greatest female of all time versatile voices. The original Eagles gang toured with Linda as her band. They left Linda to form their own band the Eagles, but this song was written by them before they left and gave her permission to sing this song. Now I’m telling my age. I can tell you that Lucy Thomas has recorded this song also and is probably close to being as good as Linda. But Lucy is only 19, I think she recorded it at 15 or 16. Linda could sing almost every genre or even the phone book and it would sound good. Linda was the sweetheart of the squadron in Vietnam. Linda grew up in the southwest that may be the accent you are hearing. She always pronounced/sung her words with clarity. I’m thinking her father was an English teacher. You get that also from people, from the UK like Lucy Thomas where speech is very important. It’s the Kings English you know. It’s hard to tell that Lucy has a accent while singing until she speaks. Hi Maddy, I was in Atlanta in 1976, but I wasn't at this concert. Linda had one of the greatest rock voices ever. If you want to really hear another beautiful song by her, look up "Blue Bayou" by her. It is sad that she is unable to sing anymore. The Eagles wrote, performed, and recorded the song first, but she did an amazing cover of the song.

@@PeterRoyce-k5o Yes, Roy Orbison is the writer and original singer of "Blue Bayou" and of course gave Linda permission to sing it. Her version went higher on the charts in the US than the original (although the original was very big in Ireland and Australia). I listen to and enjoy both versions.
Yes. Four members of the Eagles used to be in her backup band, and when she recorded "Desperado" for her _Don't Cry Now_ album, it brought more attention to their version which had been released earlier in the same year (1973). They considered it a favor for her to do a version of the song, which helped jump start their popularity as a band, though I'm pretty sure they would have become popular either way, just maybe not quite so quickly.

Hi Maddie, the song is about a guy’s inadequacy or anxiety with girls. A line refers to ‘getting the ones you can’t get’ ..a clear reference to a girl you like but she might not like you. It’s a great ballad by the Eagles and here is a wonderful interpretation by Linda. As with many of Linda’s covers she made it distinctly her own, I do prefer the original but if there’s ever going to be a cover of an Eagles song it’s hard to go past Linda Ronstadt.
You probably already know this but some members of the Eagles were Linda's band when she became a single performer after being in a group band. Look up the "Stone Ponies" which was the first time I heard her perform.

I always loved this song. Her version was my favorite by far. The first I ever heard. I always loved Linda Ronstadt since I was 9 years old in 1975. Always loved Crystal Gayle too. I'd like to see you react to "When I Dream" if you haven't already. Or "The Woman In Me". However, there are great highly underrated vocalists that you might not be so familiar with that I am desperately trying to get allot more people to listen too. Holly Dunn, My Beloved Lari White. Kelly Willis, Mandy Barnett, Shelby Lynne, her sister Allison Moorer among others. These are some of the finest voices of the past 40 years in Country Music or any genre. I personally think that Lari White and Mandy Barnett could hang with Linda Ronstadt, Patsy Cline or anybody else vocally. You would be hard pressed to find two better voices, more versatile voices. To get you curious, here is footage of Mandy Barnett in 1994 still a Teenager at the time. She had just won "The New Miss Patsy Cline" contest. Mandy comes out on the Stage of the Grand Ole Opry as Patsy singing "Blue Moon Of Kentucky". It's just incredible as she looks and sounds almost exactly like Patsy did. Great reaction Maddy! I (and lots of others) fell in love with Linda's voice from the first time we heard it. In my case, Different Drum with the Stone Ponies, was the song. I believe it was her first 'hit'. She is such a strong, versatile singer.

I was too young to go to that concert, plus it was about 1500 miles away, so I couldn't be there. I do remember her being on the Muppet Show singing, "Blue Bayou" at one point, Kermit was with her on the set.

You cited and compared her to Audrey Hepburn who was born in Ixelles, Brussels, to an aristocratic family, Hepburn spent parts of her childhood in Belgium, England, and the Netherlands. She attended boarding school in Kent, England, from 1936 to 1939. With the outbreak of World War II, she returned to the Netherlands. During the war, she studied ballet at the Arnhem Conservatory.

Just Don Henley and Glenn Frey, they were part of her road band, she helped put the musicians together with her boyfriend JD souther, which eventually formed the eagles.

Linda the original big voice ballad singer. Her album Lush Life covers the great classics of the big band era of the last century. Linda gives her best vocal performance on it. Skylark especially. 🙏🍁
The meaning behind this song is up for interpretation of the listener. Desperado was written by Glenn Frey & Don Henley of the Eagles in 1973 for the album of the same name. Henley said the song was not really a hit until Linda Ronstadt recorded it later in 1973. When questioned the writers really didn’t give a valid explanation to the meaning of the song. The Desperado lyrics suggest the song is about a lonely cowboy who refuses to fall in love. Some say the song is about a young man who finds a guitar & joins a band. And yet others say, Desperado is really about the idea that there are people out there who won’t settle down or love those around them because in their life nothing is good enough for them. I guess we’ll never really know the meaning behind this song, it’s whatever you want it to be I guess.🎶💕

Listening to The Trio (Linda, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton) harmonizing is one of life's true joys. Try "A Mother's Smile." Loving your reactions. You strike me as a very intelligent and sincere person, and people like that are difficult to find on the internet these days.

Anytime I come across a Linda Ronstadt vinyl I don’t have I buy it, I don’t care if the disc inside is broken or not, I’ll hang up the album cover regardless.

Linda Ronstadt was one of my favorite female singers as I grew up in the 197o's. I still play her music while writing and drawing because her voice and music still resonate with me. Her performance with Eagles on the Midnight Special to close the show with TAKE IT EASY is a fond memory. My mother told me that she thought about me when she heard this song before she passed away in 2o14. Whether it was this version of the Eagles original. It impacts me more now when I hear it.
Suggestions. Her cover of the Rolling Stones song TUMBLING DICE benefits her trademark style.

She can no longer sing because the disease robbed her of the ability to sing. But that makes it more urgent to appreciate her talent, as she can no longer make any more music. She is truly a one of a kind talent.
Ronstadt was a great vocalist, and some members of the Eagles were part of her band at one time.. Stone Ponys I believe(not sure) But anyway you should give a listen to the Eagles desperado album (which is what this song is from).. Great story type album, with excellent songs.. very underrated imo..
Linda grew up 50 miles from Mexico in Tucson, AZ. She spent a lot of time in Mexico, having relatives there.. Her father was a Mexican entertainer, with a medium sized band. They came to America when she was very young, but she is fluent in Spanish as well as English. This could explain her "accent".
Linda is from Tucson and is Latina. Her family is an old prominent family here. This was an Eagles song that she covered and made a hit. The Eagles founding members started in her back up band.
Hi Maddy❤ grew up listening to Linda singing this and so much more. On depression- in the movie St Elmo’s Fire the Movie they touch on the idea that everybody at some point has their time on the edge. At 60 found this to be true and this song is so good touching on this idea- great advice

As a child (well, preteen) this song made no sense to me. I took it too literally. Then I grew up and lived on my own for too long... suddenly the true meaning of the song hit me like a hammer. I've been happily married for 10 years now.

The best voice of our era. 35 years before autotune. She runs rings around today's singers. An artist who could do everything and was awarded for it---Rock, Country, Jazz, Latin, Opera, 1950's classics. Linda was the first woman performer that sold out the huge venues.

Saw her sing this live with the Eagles around this time maybe a year or 2 later. I was about 8 and ive never forgot her singing this.
She started in Seattle, I saw her in 1966 in a small dance hall in Blaine, I was stationed at a Radar Station there. She was at the time known as Linda Ronstsdt and the Stone Phonys.I don't remember what songs she sang. She had a relationship with Jerry Brown don't know if the song has any connectio with the song. love your reactions.

If you want to sample some of Linda’s versatility you should listen to Canciones de mi Madre, an album entirely in Spanish, in which Linda is fluent. For young me my age, I was about 20 when she released this song, Linda was the female star, we all loved her.
This particular live recording is the best version of that song ever recorded - it even kills all other Linda's that I have heard!

Learn some logic Anyone with half a brain could figure it out. During the video, Maddy asked if Linda was the original singer while she was singing "Desperado", hence my response that Linda was not the original singer, and then I threw in the authors of the song she was singing the video. The 17 people who have liked the video understood what I meant. You inferred something that was never intended.
The only song written by Henley and Frey in the discussion is "Desperado", and it's the subject of the video. Hard to believe you're too dumb to figure it out.

The whole Atlanta concert was one of her best performances, This song became an early signature song of The Eagles. Frey and Henley played behind Linda in the early 70's and her recording of Deserado was i believe, penned by Frey. She performed the song with The Eagles as well.

This song was written by two members of the Eagles. Based on a partially finished song by Don Henley, about a friend of his. He later said that it was not a hit for the Eagles until Linda Ronstadt did her version of it. Then both versions skyrocketed.
the really crazy part is that her backing band for a long time was The Eagles and I think Jackson Browne for a time. so I mean, yeah certified legend lol.

Nobody sings anything the way, Linda Ronstadt can. But just a small note Maddy Audrey Hepburn, Was a British actress which may account for her soft-spoken American accent. You may never get round to reacting to it, but treat yourself and listen to Linda Ronstadt singing “ poor wandering one” from the Pirates of Penzance it will give you some perspective as to her amazing range.

Audrey Hepburn was Dutch by birth and was a spy and an underground fighter during WW2. So when she spoke American there was all ways a little Dutch accent when she spoke. Language is always evolving, not always for the better, that is the nature of language. The English used to speak as they did in a Shakespeare play, they do not, unless they have to, speak that way anymore. You have to remember English was a new language during the time of Shakespeare. We got many words that were invented during his time. So as time goes on the language changes. Some words go away temporarily and come back because it just didn't work. Language from sports and music always like to shake things up. So I hear you but it is an enviability that language will change and pronunciations will change, not always for the best, or better.
Linda was always one of my favorites and songs like 'Desperado' one of the best. She and Karen Carpenter from that era were tops. Today, Morissette Amon Lamar, who is the best female vocalist on the planet today rules. Because I know you've reacted to Angelina I'm giving you Daneliya's last performance on AGT The All-Stars. I said last because she said this was the last American singing competition she was going to sell herself for. She knew she would only have one song because of how things are engineered, I say rigged, but everyone gets all upset with me. But then maybe they still believe in Santa Claus. Daneliya said she didn't like the way singers were used, for her it felt personal, and she always felt depressed and insecure when she was done. This is an artist whose performances never got fewer than a million views. Some of hers were getting so much attention that they would take her video down to limit her views. Take this appearance as of right now she had 7.3 million views on the AGT official channel. The there are 3 other channels offering her performance that either have over a million views or are getting close. So if you add those three and the official channel you've got over 10 million views for one appearance. I know that that is more than three acts that made it to the finals for that nights show, added together. You be the judge.

As others have pointed out, this is a song written by the Eagles, and both their original studio version and live versions are worth hearing. Her accent is partly Spanish….she is a mixture of German and Mexican parents…even though she was born in Phoenix….this song was written by the rock group Eagles…which she performed with before going solo…
In a way, I prefer the original because of the harmonies and I've always like Don Henley's vocal timbre--but I also like the way the Linda Ronstadt belts out at the end. It's worth listening to the original too.
