- A longer video than normal for our channel, but there is just so much to see here. Belsay is the creation of the Middleton family.The Middletons were first recorded as owning Belsay in 1270. The family lived in the Castle until the completion of the new mansion in 1817 - designed by the then owner Charles Monck and inspired by what he had seen on his extended honeymoon in Greece.Linking the Hall and the Castle is the remarkable Quarry Garden created in the Picturesque style with a micro climate that makes it possible to grow tender plants well beyond their normal northern limit.
