As an old Durham lad,i really enjoyed the little walk round my favourite city. A little surprised you didn't mention the myth/legend re- The Marquis of Londonderry's statue. i.e. the creator of the statue commiting suicide because after bragging it was the most perfect statue in the world with no faults,a little boy stood underneath and pointed out that the horse was missing his tongue! Overcome with grief,he hanged himself. True or not? I don't know, but a nice local story nonetheless. Also proposed to my my wife in the Cathedral by the grave of Bishop Lightfoot. She now sadly gone due to cancer. But thanks again for taking me round "Dunholm". Ho'way the mags! Gan canny.....
My son has studied and lived in Durham for the past 5 years and is now studying for his Masters. A student of St Marys, Durham is such a special place and amongst England's famous University cities is, in my opinion, the most "real". I remember having to do a case study on Durham for my geography class GCSE, I'm quite lucky really being located in the south of County Durham, school trips were always somewhere interesting! Only downsides to the area are the weathers naff it's usually cold apart from the 2 nice days we get in summer and then it's too hot, and its dark for 6 months of the year, on our shortest day it gets dark at like 3:30pm!
So great was Durham Cathedral's eminence, that the 12th century Priory of St Leonard in Stamford, Lincolnshire (around 190 miles south) used to send novices there.
I didn't know that one! Certainly it is a spectacular and powerful cathedral - and those novices must have been quite awestruck when they made it to Durham! Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video!
Hi there! The video was filmed in late November of 2021 - amazingly just a few hours before Storm Arwen sadly swept through Durham and the surrounding area, the weather was certainly the calm before the storm... Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Born and bred in Durham and although I have traveled the world I still class Durham as home. I have seen some of the most beautiful places in the world but in my eyes none can surpass Durham. It is such a shame that people are no longer allowed to go into to Castle, tourists miss out on such a lot because of Durham University.
Many thanks for your excelled guided walk through Durham. Visited last month & followed this walk with my wife. Parked on the Riverwalk car park (top floor), which is very close to where the video begins & thoroughly enjoyed your suggested route & being able to share your knowledge with her on the way around. Would recommend this route but would add on a walk around the river loop once you've crossed the Elvet Bridge which takes you back to the start without returning through the city square.
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - and indeed the return to Durham with narration this time :) Thank you very much for watching and for your wonderful support as always!

I’ve been watching some of your Northumberland vids, as my wife and I visited several places in the North East a few months back. Sadly we didn’t have time to visit Berwick. Anyway, well done with the narration, so much better than titles as it allows much more interesting info to be dispensed too! Also allows you to reduce distracting loud ambient sounds when necessary. Cheers
As a lazy introvert from Edinburgh I had no clue until recently what the rest of the UK was like. Durham is definately worth a day out and Newcastle a night out imo.
Would love to see a walk around durhams younger brother Newcastle. Although that one could take hours because of its engineering and manufacturing history. Either way Durham is my home but Newcastle is the cool brother.
Enjoyed that very much, thank you. A suggestion for a follow-up video is to wander along the riverside to Prebend's Bridge - photographs of the Cathedral from that vicinity have been done to death but it is one of the best views in the world, nevertheless! Durham is something of an undiscovered gem (eg compared to York) and I'm torn between advertising it or keeping it's secret! As a 70's student (Van Mildert College) I'll always love the place - especially the pubs - Half Moon, Dun Cow, Colpitts, Elm Tree ......
I can't express how much I love your video! Thank you sooo much for providing us with such interesting content! I'm an international student and I walk past these places everyday, but it is through your video that I got to know so much about Durham. The story of Dun holm is so interesting, and I have a friend who is living in a student accommodation called Dun Holm! 😆
When you mentioned earlier that the cart with the body of St Cuthberts got stuck, it was always told to us as we grew up that the place was at Warden Law Near Houghton Le Spring. However history is forgotten when written by newcomers.
I live east of Durham, take the cathedral away, its just a bang average place tbh.The high street is just charity shops and barbers, the new riverside bars etc are a concrete eyesore.Of course, because of the cathedral expect to pay over the odds for food and drink etc.Pubs are quite frankly crap,ok for a couple of afternoon drinks, but as a night out,i wouldn't bother.
Don't think we've heard your voice since the Twickenham / Kew video, which you mainly mumbled through with singing! 😂 It's great format you've got now excellent video which can be watched without struggling to keep up with the sub-titles, where's the singing though?
Indeed that's a great story! I probably should have squeezed it in there too - apologies for missing it out though :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
In the late 1950s Durham was also the first place in the world to have cctv to control the traffic. A policeman in a box in the market square could see on a tv monitor from which direction queues were building up and he controlled the traffic lights. There are several Pathe news videos on UA-cam about it
Traffic used to go up Silver Street until the 1960’s (not the mid 19thC) the street was one way up to the market place where a policeman used to stand in a box controlling traffic

Thanks for the trip Mr Walk (or may I call you Gimbal 😁) You have a very clear and pleasant voice. However - (and there were too many 'however's !!) although extremely interesting, I felt there was far too much information and just think "who is going to remember all this" I would have much preferred some gaps in the narration to give the viewer time to view. You could always add more information in your description, which I normally read before I watch the vid. Nevertheless I want to stress that it was extremely good and well thought out and researched. Keep em coming !! ✔💯👍😁🤩
Thank you very much for that detailed feedback! Certainly there was a lot of information on this walk - and we barely even scratched the surface of Durham's amazing history! I'll try to leave a bit more breathing room in the narration though on the next occasion - so thank you for the suggestion, and of course for tuning in too!

@@LetsWalkUK I must rather the cold so give me Durham weather any day lol.. it’s currently between 32 and 35 degrees here for the next 5 days..😭😭 and yes we had a fantastic time in Durham.. 👍👍
Every day’s a school day. Excellent video, mate
26:08 shame you turned around there. You could’ve highlighted the Dun Cow Pub, just up that road, also steeped in history
Loved this format, I do the treadmill and not having to read the words made this so much more enjoyable. Great job and hope you can continue to do them this way. Thanks and Happy New Year.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad that you enjoyed the narrated video and that it made those treadmill walks all the more easy-going - we'll be having more of these narrated walks in future, so I hope you enjoy them on the running machine!
And Happy New Year to you too!
Yes more of this!!!
Ha ha I'm really glad you enjoyed it! There will be many more narrated walks coming in future - and from some gorgeous and historic destinations all over the country, so do stay tuned :)
Thank you so much for watching!
I was fortunate to visit this beautiful city on my special birthday...we stayed in Belmont and traveled in by bus....never short of anything to see or interest me...
Very nice video. I like your narrated tour.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the narrated tour - we'll have more in the future alongside our normal walks :)
This is my home city
So good for you to publish it
Cracking video, lovely historical commentry, its the first time that I have had a chance to see the inner city as on previous occasions was either collecting or dropping off a student from scotland.
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the walk - the centre of Durham is absolutely spectacular if you get the chance to spend a bit more time there - though certainly the university does take up a big part of life in the city :)
Durham miners gala was always known as Durham big meeting by local mining families.!!!!!!!
This is the 'cherry in the cake', always enjoyed your walks but now I can enjoy your images without doing any fast reading. . Yourve done a great job with a very listenable voice. Thank you.
I have watched loads of your walking videos and I think this one is the best you can hear it where as before you had to read it
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Many people have asked for narrated walks, and if you think they're a good addition to the channel, we'll certainly be having more in the future, so do stay tuned :)
Thank you so much for watching!
Great video of my home town.
Your videos are amazing I've watched them all, the narration is a plus !
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you've enjoyed the videos on the channel, and I'm delighted to hear you liked the narration too - we'll be having more narrated walks alongside our classic walks in future :)
Awesome, love it. Thank you! 😊
Loved the old style but no worries on new....durham county born n bred ....i remember when you could drive a vehicle over bridge and up hill to be met by police in box directing traffic....grandad was a ww1 durham light infantry...soldier...shame the dli museum closed...atb ...👍
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - and I do hope that this video did your home county justice too :)
Thank you very much for commenting too with some of those lovely memories - it's quite amazing how this seemingly ancient city has changed so much just in a few decades!
I have exacly the same memory!
Carol n Dave, it's to be reopened, I'm one the group "save the DLI Museum " it took us 5 years but we did it, it was the Labour run Durham County Council , basically the anti white culture party, but they hold no sway now as the people of Durham say now. Best regards from County Durham England. The Land of the Prince Bishops
@@geoffwheadon2897 hi geoff thats brilliant good crack .. we attended charity poppy walk 3rd november 2018 eldest daughter and her dog alfie in durham.... very emotianal my grandad survived ww1 lived to 1979.... thanks very very much for all your efforts... 👌👌👌👌👌cheers from dave.....
When was this video filmed? Loved the weather. Content pitch perfect as always.
Hi there! The video was filmed in late November of 2021 - amazingly just a few hours before Storm Arwen sadly swept through Durham and the surrounding area, the weather was certainly the calm before the storm...
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
The Pink Panther's favourite city; Durham, Durham, Durham, Durham, Durham. :)
Thanks for a great and very well narrated walk, learned alot and loved it!
You can, but you have to book a guided tour when the University campus is on a break.
It’s good to see home after so many year!
Liking the new narrated video’s tho. Keep up the good work
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - and indeed the return to Durham with narration this time :)
Thank you very much for watching and for your wonderful support as always!
Thank you. It’s a long time since I visited Durham and it’s cathedral. I really enjoyed this.
The royal county hotel is where me and my friends snuck into to watch the England v Germany game during the Euros
Ha ha I hope that was last year's Euros and not '96! I was on cloud nine after that one - I'm sure the hotel was a lovely place to enjoy the match :)
Thank you for watching - I hope you enjoyed this video too!
Planning on a return for a few months after most of a lifetime away. Thanks for the preview!
Have only watched 10 mins so far, but I already want to visit Durham! I think the video is great and the narration and level of information is just right. Will watch the rest presently - I stopped to ask my other half if he'd ever visited and to say we need to put it on the list of places to visit because it looks so interesting. Thank you!
Ooh you must visit! It's a stunning city and one that I absolutely love going back to - there's always something new to discover :)
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and the narration - thank you very much for watching and for your kind words! I hope you enjoy your visit to Durham too, whenever that may be!
further out of the city there's loads to enjoy in Durham county too - coastline
We visited Durham a few years ago and loved it. Stayed at the Marriott Royal County hotel which is shown in this video, highly recommended for a really comfortable base within just a few minutes walk of the bailey.
have watched you for a while now, love the narration.
I'm so glad to hear it! Thank you so much for tuning in on this occasion and on the many videos in the past - I'm really grateful for your support, and rest assured that we'll have many more in the future :)
Just about to move to Durham from Scotland. Thanks for the detailed and fascinating insight of my soon to be home town ☺
Great Walking Tour. I like it very much+1. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video :)
This is actually quite well timed, as I’m going up there to kill a weekend.
Really appreciate this.
If anyone who lives in Durham can recommend anything else, good places to eat etc, I’d appreciate it even more! 😊
😅Cleaning miss.Roza’s walking hallway 🤷♀️🗺️🅱️🇹🇷🕶️🤣
Beautiful city 🙏
I love your videography and narration! The stone buildings and streets are marvelous.
I am here in USA with almost none historical places like in UK. I hope your historical sites will remain prosperous!
Amazing and interesting video-reel! And it's pleasant to hear classic British English!
British English is the real English, just call it English 😄
Thank you so very much.. it has sounds now.. I, particulary ♡ it!
Obrigada, from 🇧🇷☘👏👏👏
And thank you very much for tuning in to watch! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - Durham is certainly a beautiful city to visit :)
Obrigado!
@@LetsWalkUK 😁🇧🇷☘✌
Your shows are incredble! Obrigada! It is realy expensive for me to travel to UK rigth now, your currency is out of my pocket... goodness... so, Brazil is fab too, in other way, nature, rivers, sea, fauna n flora are amaizing... I think you should come to visit..
So, for now, I have to please me just watching your shows...
Best regards...
Thank you, impressive. Durham I shall visit you very soon be ready.
I really want to go to Durham to do my PhD; this video has simply confirmed me in that decision: how gorgeous! Thank you. :)
Cheers
What a great video it reminded me of the time I lived there I really enjoyed the narration
My Son's friend lives in Durham, might have to visit next time, didn't know they had a castle! Looks like am amazing place.
As a lazy introvert from Edinburgh I had no clue until recently what the rest of the UK was like. Durham is definately worth a day out and Newcastle a night out imo.
We love you "lets walk" you have also inspired me too
Looking forward to this, it's a place I've never been :)
I live in Durham, it's so sad to see what Covid did to it. So many stores gone, or going.
Would love to see a walk around durhams younger brother Newcastle. Although that one could take hours because of its engineering and manufacturing history. Either way Durham is my home but Newcastle is the cool brother.
I love your commentary it’s awesome as I come from here but sadly don’t live here any more I miss Durham
Love living here
In October 2002 Sadler street, the road from the market place up to the cathedral was the first place in the UK to have a congestion charge.
Awesome. I'm your fan.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!
Lovely!
Very good, hoped you might have mentioned the story of Jimmy Allen while on Elvet Bridge :)
Indeed that's a great story! I probably should have squeezed it in there too - apologies for missing it out though :)
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Good job man Thank you 👍
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Can't believe I'm really watching video tour of the place I've lived in, since birth aha
In the late 1950s Durham was also the first place in the world to have cctv to control the traffic. A policeman in a box in the market square could see on a tv monitor from which direction queues were building up and he controlled the traffic lights. There are several Pathe news videos on UA-cam about it
I’m surprised that The Venerable Bede was not mentioned, his tomb is in the Cathedral.
Traffic used to go up Silver Street until the 1960’s (not the mid 19thC) the street was one way up to the market place where a policeman used to stand in a box controlling traffic

Thanks for the trip Mr Walk (or may I call you Gimbal 😁)
You have a very clear and pleasant voice. ✔💯👍😁🤩
no, not Gimbal !!
@@LetsWalkUK you're welcome and sorry for the Gimbal faux pas !! 😒
Can't wait to see all of your videos and follow it to travel in the UK!
