You forgot to mention two things. First, the very coolest part of this bike is the 90 degree V4 engine. Secondly, the 700cc super Magna came about because Harley convinced enough Senators and members of the house to impose a tariff on any import bikes over 700cc. They were terrified of the v45 and v65 Magnas as they were both faster than anything Harley was making. That said, love the bike and wish I could buy it as a back-up bike/project. Thanks for all your videos.

The 87 Honda Super Magna has 80 horsepower a six-speed transmission and it rides very smooth, people say it feels like you're gliding and it's fast enough to turn 12 second-quarter mile times.

I have the 87 VF700C Super Magna. At 95+ you need a windshield cause the wind tries to throw you off the bike. Fun to ride really quick for a 700cc

I purchased a 1985 (or is it 84) 750 magna as a 1st bike. First year was kinda rough, got new tires, new spark plugs, new front brakes and took it out for first spin yesterday (bcuz canada) . It sounded so nice, looked nicer and the ride was nicest ever. Not thinking of selling it anymore. Shes a 6 speed beast and looking awesome

Dude! I love the Super Magna, but PLEASE!!!! Don't put the PREVIOUS Magnas down! The 700 and 750's from 82 to 86 had the exact same horses of the Super Magna, in fact, Super Magna is not even the official name, it was name given by the Magna enthusiasts! I have a 700 and 2 V65s, and the Super Magna will not beat my 700, and my V65s will blow most modern bikes out of the water!!!
One more thing, the BEST bikes came out of the 80s!

    • @neilmoore3856
      @neilmoore3856 4 роки тому +4

The 82 v45 had the highest hp, highest tq, and lightest weight of the v45's. It was quickest. My 82 will wax the pants off of my 87 and my 88. V 65's had roughly 116 hp, the 45's were between 80 and 90 hp. V65's died because insurance companies quit covering them, they were king. Prompting the birth of the Vmax and Kaw eliminators. The 87-88 magnas also had different engine internals from previous magnas. The V45 and V65 interceptors had the same motors as the magnas and sabres but it rotated the opposite way due to the chain drive. Around 16000 87's were made, only 2000 88's.

Nice video, I bought a 1987 Super Magna brand new in spring of 89' I still have that bike, it is in close to mint condition...though it has been customized a bit. It has been my only bike since I bought it, I've put 56,000 miles on it and still love it! I get compliments/questions every where I go with it, one of the best purchases I have ever made! Thanks for all of your videos.

6:48 - "Cause we all know, nothing good came out of the 80s!" I hope you were being sarcastic or joking? You were riding one of the "good things" that came out of the 80s. You know why this bike was only 700cc in 1987 and then was able to go up to 750cc in 1988 before Honda dropped the model? If you are curious, due to the tariff on import bikes the US Government put on import bikes because of mainly the crying of one US motorcycle manufacturer. Can you guess which? Hint: now, they will be making their bikes in Mexico.

I get around 45-50 mpg on a good highway that is straight and flat ground. 32-44 depending on how one is riding on the twisties on secondary state highways.

Actually, the '87 (700) and '88 (750) Magnas sold poorly when they arived, ,and were discontinued after only 2 years because of crap sales People didn't like the upswept pipes and the solid rear wheel. The bike was too out of the box. It wasn't until after they were discontinued that the cult following began. I had an '88. I put 86k trouble free miles on that bike, riding all over the south. That 6 speed tyranny spoiled me. The guy i sold the bike to wrecked it the next day. You're wrong, 6 gears is perfect for that little beast. Cruise all day in 6th gear (Overdrive) at 100 mph. I've been riding a MeanStreak since '05, another great bike. Im looking at buy a low miles 1984 V65 Magna tomorrow, for $700.00. Im stoked. Those V4 engines are beasts.

1988 Shadow VT 800 had a four speed. I owned a 1986 VT 700 back in the day and it had six speed transmission with cast wheels and tubeless tires and had counter balancers and ran very smooth for a V-twin. Honda tried to mimic the Sportster with the VT 800 (spoke wheels and vibrated like crap) and thus screwed up that series in my opinion.

I don't want more gears, just want longer gears, like Shadow 1100 or VTX 1300-ish long.

My first bike was an 84 Magna V45. Great first bike. Fairly fast and very comfortable ride. Totally trouble free. I kept it in my parents garage, and every spring the first ride would have little smoking balls shooting out the exhaust pipes. The entire street would smell like barbecue. None of my friends would ride behind me for the first few miles because all winter long mice would stuff dog chow in the pipes, so that first Spring ride I had to blast everything out! After a few years I wanted more juice though. Something like an FJ1200. That was the eighties. Haven't ridden a bike since about then and after 30 years looking to get a nice ride. Trying to decide whether to pick up a cheap Super Magna or a Yamaha FJ-09. Yeah, no clue what I want!

I am a two time 87’ Magna owner. Killed first one. Respecting and babying #2. Besides the terrible description of the 6 speed transmission, #6 being over drive, I really liked your enthusiasm about the cool bike that it is. The over dive of sixth gear is really cool. The bikes pulls really hard all the way to about 120mph. Then you shift to 6 and she’s done. She then plains out and may only creep 5 more mph. The way it plains out there at top speed is not dissatisfying. The rpm drops and she holds there with out making to much heat. She can stay there for a little over an hour then you have to look for a gas station. The original numbers were 12.7 in the 1/4 mile. At about 110mph. Um that’s pretty quick for a v4 cruiser. You must corner fast enough sometime to scrape them pegs. It’s beastly. Unfortunately the example of the bike you used in your video was a royal fucking piece of shit. I hope someday you get on in all original one those handlebars look crazy but the ergonomics and proper seat and leg position is so comfortable. Plus if you get a shiny red one and realize you have two more gears you would’ve blown right past that little red car. Oh yeah and I’m talking stock. There are faster custom ones out there!!! I can talk all day about this bike I love my bike more than I love my wife and she knows it.

I'm currently looking at an 88' 750 for ~$1000. It's got 75k miles though. Should I be concerned? I also have a 94' VFR (same engine I believe aside from some cam differences I think.. chain vs sprocket driven)

I just bought one and I might sell it and I might hang onto it and keep it for a collectors item as well; for they only made 16,000 of the 87's. So it's a keeper. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda Magna, I think it is 6 speed transmission.

I've heard some horror stories about the exhaust pipes on these bikes rotting from the inside - because of their position, condensation water would stay in the pipes causing oxidation. (also, wet climate here in the Netherlands...)
This would not be easy to repair.
Does anyone have experience with this?

It amazes me when people here in the states say this would make a great first bike. Yeah, great idea to put someone who's only riden a 250 aroung a carpark, on a v4 that can do 125mph as their first motor cycle. Back in NZ when you get your m /C licence, your not allowed to ride anything bigger than a 250 for the first year. Then when youv'e gained some confidence and riding skills you can go buy whatever you like.

The downside of the pipe configuration on the Super Magna is the option for saddle bags. If you like to travel you're limited to space for hauling your belongings.Oh and also rain water collects in them and rots them out.
