  • This is my very first video. I was attempting to start the brake service for my 1988 Honda VF750c Super Magna. I bought a new bike lift so I can take the rear wheel off to change the shoes on the rear drums to discover the lift won't fit the bike. So I just ramble on a bit about the bike.

    The exhaust is what hooked me and made me fall in love with them. I have the same version and color, now I want to start making changes too

      Thanks! We just do the videos for fun. I'm not a professional motorbike mechanic or anything. Just good with my hands. Hope you enjoy the vids and more importantly, enjoy the Super!!! They are just awesome bikes. Light, lots of power, and timeless looks. I may need to pickup another that's a basket case to mod it. Cheers!

      Thanks! Much appreciated. Now, on to making the adapter for my bike lift. I am really looking forward to the upgraded brake pad / shoe compound. I wish Honda made this Magna with either dual disc up front or a rear disc. A lot of GO on this bike, not balanced with enough STOP! ;-)

    Really late to the party. I just stumbled in here looking for info on that "Super Magna" model. You keep that one nicely fettled. I know a lot of water's gone under the bridge since you posted this, but I hope that Harbor Freight lift has worked out for you. I just adore mine, which I picked up years ago at one of their Sidewalk Sales on clearance for something mind-numbing like just $12. But then I'm nursing along some fairly "old school" hoopties (an '05 preunit Royal Enfield Bullet, '67 Norton N15CS 750 twin and something called a '57 Zündapp Bella R201 scooter), all of which it slides under and hoists like it was a factory special tool or something. Nice and stable. Not a single weird Nipponese lifting tab amongst them. But I gather you've sorted out an adapter base by now--possibly just a big hunk of wood. You also mention cam wear. One product I've found VERY helpful for my flat tappet and pushrods stuff is something called Lucas TB-Zinc Plus Break-In Oil Additive. Just a couple of ounces of that goo per oil change, and it beefs up those zinc antiwear compounds (ZDDP) in the oil to those pre-'90s SAE ratings levels. Because catalytic converters don't like zinc, they've been successively dialing back those zinc levels in the modern brews. So, for example, I use regular Mobil1 15W-50, which has 1,200 ppm of zinc out of the jug. Just 2 ounces of the Lucas goop brings that to well over the 1,500 ppm of yore that my old junk likes, and I haven't had to adjust the valve tappets in the Bullet for over 12,000 miles. A little dab'll do ya. I regularly check, but there's just no wear. It's like my cam followers are eternal or something.

    Beautiful machines. We are brothers sharing the same bike lolThe cam lobe wear was on the early and stopped at 83 or 84, so the super magna are not at risk.

      Do a search for raising idle rpms on the super magna due to low oil flow at factory recommended setting.

    Great series. Too bad you hadn't strapped the cam to your forehead like a miner's light. :)
    Specially on the rear wheel removal where you ended up doing like the manual you referenced: "Remove back wheel".
    lolz

    • @RenchRanch
      @RenchRanch  8 років тому +1

      +Mr skafloc40 The kit is from Dave Dodge racing. Google him. He used to race for the Honda factory team with the V4's back when this bike was new. He as oil mod kits for a bunch of different year Magna's. Cheers!

    Have you ever run into any major issues with finding parts for the Magna since so very few were made? I have a 94 VFR (very similar engine)

    • @RenchRanch
      @RenchRanch  5 років тому +2

      Actually yes. But with some searching and eBay for sourcing used parts, I was able to keep the Super on the road. Honda tends to "parts shelf" bits from different bikes to make other models. So with some searching I was able to find things from other Honda's that worked and were more common. Probably the hardest parts to find would be internal engine parts and certainly the cams and rockers. Keep that in mind if you're looking at a high mile Super and were thinking about rebuilding the engine. I sold the Magna just over 2yrs ago to a collector who was going to do a full restoration. I bought a 2016 Indian Scout Sixty and I have been totally thrilled with it. Thanks for watching.

      Rench Ranch Yeah, kind of what I thought. I've been looking at an 88 but it's got 75k miles. Good price at $1k though but parts for a rebuild is my main concern.

    • @RenchRanch
      @RenchRanch  5 років тому +2

      Depends on how badly you want to work on it. LOL I think if you can get in touch with Dave Dodge (Google search for him) Racing he may be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck.

    Why not just lay 2 2x4’s across your lift.
