The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman is never front and center with the GTS and the GT4 gracing magazine covers and UA-cam videos everywhere, but does that mean you should count it out? We sample a member’s 2022 model, with a 2.0-litre turbocharged flat-four good for 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque and a six-speed manual transmission.

Choosing between a 4-cylinder and a 6-cylinder Porsche is a very 1st world problem. Neither one is bad. The distinctions are shades of excellence. Some people would be willing to forgo the experience of a 6-cylinder engine, but prefer the experience of a new Porsche. Some people with the same budget will forgo the new-Porsche experience in order to be able to afford a 6-cylinder. Neither is a bad choice, and both add to the Porsche community. The world is a better place for the choice!

Owning a Porsche period is a first world problem. People buy them and not econo-boxes because they want an experience. I understand why people would have reservations about paying north of $60,000 for a turbo 4-cylinder.

Not to mention the $15k dealers want to tack on to MSRP for a GTS, and GT4 are even crazier ADM. No thanks, at that price step up into a 911, even if it’s a base model with a few performance options, I’d take that over an overpriced Cayman.

I'm 70+ and I have a 718 Cayman s, bought new in 2017. It's driven just like a daily driver (summer only): 1) Comfortable; 2) No mechanical issues; 3) Spacious; 4) Economy (premium only). However, I change oil every 6 months, with 5k or with 100 miles it doesn't matter. However it's Guard Red, it-stick-out like a sore thumb.

      3) spacious?, 😂. Spacious!, where have you been? Even a model T has more space than a Cayman.
      4) economy? Compared to what?
As for mechanical issues you obviously don’t drive it much. Any number of modern hot hatches and coupes will be much more civilised to live with, much better suspension, way better economically, more reliable and at least just as fast if not faster.
It’s about time got into the modern world, sport chrono package 🤣😂🤣

@@ArtVandelayOfficial I disagree. My 987.1 Cayman S sounded amazing above 5.5k. The newer non-gt3 cars dont sound 'good' because they're turbo'd. Turbos will almost always kill sound volume (traditional intake/exhaust noises).
But I agree on your comparisons. All 3 (Honda, M Car, P Car) all have dual cam profiles, so they're all going to sound great above 65-70% of their total RPM capacity (the vaunted, 'VTEC kicked in', lol).
Ironically, Nissan was first to use this in a production car, iirc. My father's 93 Nissan Sentra SE-R with the SR20DE (no T since it wasn't turbo.. that motor was never an option in North America) and had VTEC before Honda had it in North America. Now look at Nissan......

Totally agree with the video. I own a sport chrono 718S and a 911 but have also driven a base 718. While the variable vane turbocharger on the S has clear advantages over the base 718, the base is certainly a very capable, beautiful and respectable sports car that will immediately bring an enduring smile to the driver. Any 718 has a lightness about it that provides an arguably better driving experience in the corners that the 911 cannot match. The sport chrono and PASM options described in the video are worth getting for sure.

I like the sound a lot, especially when its full throttle or the boost button is pushed. I understand the Subaru comparison, but club members seem to forget that Porsches started as flat fours.

It’s not turbo lag. It’s the boost threshold. The turbos spool almost instantly. They just do so over 2500rpm, which with a manual box is a non-issue. I’m always in the sweet spot. There is no lag driving like this. It goes like stink.
