I have a 2012 Cayman 987.2 base for around 2 and a half years now, and it's by far the best car i've owned. The handling, the torque, the everyday usability with the storage space, and even the quirky stuff like the pop-out cupholders, it's excellent. The facelifted interior in the 987.2s and Porsches after 2009 in general also look fantastic, taking away the absolutely cluster of buttons and streamlined it alot more, making it feel alot more driver focused. It ain't luxurious, you're certainly reminded it's a sport car. But it's a really comfortable cabin to be in, atleast in my opinion. Regardless of whether you get a 987.1 or .2, if you get one, I hope Filipo finds it to be a super enjoyable experience. I love Porsche, I love 911s, but Caymans are an absolute steal for what you get out of them.
Get the Cayman! I love my 987.1 Cayman S. You're right that the base model has less of a chance of bore scoring. Find out why by watching the 4-part series on bore scoring on the PCA UA-cam channel. I recently installed the PCCM+ made by Porsche Classic, purchased through sun coast parts. Installed myself. Now I have a much better head unit with Apple car play. Anytime I see a 987 on the road, I know that's an enthusiast. You don't accidentally find yourself owning a 987. Find one with the sport seats. They are better than the standard seat you're sitting in.
Problem is IF bore scoring it does happen, is another Cayman’s worth of a cost to fix. Basically, you loose a 20k car without insurance to back you up. They should cost 10k on a good day just for risk of it.

I've been saying for years that the Cayman/Boxster is the best sports car platform on the planet. Literally the only thing holding Porsche back from making it better than the 911 is the fact that 911 owners would lose their mind if they made a car that was better. If porsche gave the the cayman/boxster the 911's engine, and improved suspension, it would be better than the 911 in literally every way.

Great video! I'm looking forward to future videos as you figure out what you would like to buy next. One thought: Have you considered a Panamera? Four seats, a very roomy and practical hatch, but still fun, sporty, and I see many used in great shape for very good prices.
I have owned a base 987.1 for around a year now and absolutely love it. I have done multiple road trips, including a trip to Nurburgring and some track days and haven’t had any major problems. I can highly recommend getting one.
Really like this porsche the color and quite a bargain given its a Porsche even with that mileage. Fillipo is definitely more of a natural behind the camera, and I love the use of different camera angles.Glad to see he's getting good feedback. Felt more like Jay Leno from a video perspective, which is also refreshing. Hopefully, he can get a camera mounted in the back so we get to see different angles, especially out the front screen. Definitely onto something with buying cheaper cars and looking for an affordable bargain.
First time I drove a 987 it was simply the more exciting version of my 2002 5-speed Honda Civic, which is exactly what I was looking for. Love it. If you’re tall (6’5”+) make sure you sit in it. I can fit at that height and is fine for around town, but a 997 911 has more room if you need to commute in it.
This is great to hear I'm at the same height and was curious. Unlike 996 which I don't fit, the 997.1 or 2 are glorious in terms of seating position and space for tall drivers. In that regard 981 Cayman or Boxsters seem roomier than 982 oddly.
The best thing about the Cayman is handling on a curving mountain road, you drove it on the freeway and around town…EPIC FAIL. Go back and start again…
996.1 manual c2 cab, you will love it and it will give you very similar feels as a covertible and +2 seats with more power, more room to red line, throw in fister exhausts/gundo hack and a wind deflector and youre golden. 996 is much more fully depreciated and even going up or at least holding value. 987 cayman is great and a 987 cayman S is one of the best track cars but as a top down gt cruiser and what you seem to like the 996 is for you.
As a valet I got to drive many 911s as well as various other porsche models, and a slightly tuned caymen is the only one I still think about. It was a great car.
Thanks Filippo. I've had my eye on one of these too. This helped me consider the 987. This one sounds wonderful. I can see the fun on mountain roads and even around town. Watch Out Doug, Filippo has game.
Fillipo, you should totally test drive a nice example C5. Just bought a manual one with 25k miles as my new daily and it’s surprisingly comfortable inside. The ride quality is amazing too. I don’t think the interior is as bad as people say (maybe mines just in much better condition). They also drive so amazingly well. The convertible aspect and gas mileage is awesome too!
I am a cheapo myself, so can totally relate. If you are looking for a cheap torque with a hatch, would recommend 2007 to 2009 Jaguar XKR. Reliability is comparable to Porsche, parts are cheaper, and you can get around 420hp stock. The only drawback is no manual option
C7 corvette is the way to go (although I do love the cayman) - you just can’t beat what the c7 offers! It’s one of the very few (maybe the only?) modern sports cars that combines lightweight, an NA V8, manual transmission, RWD, analog driving experience, and open roof if you want it. And then there's MagRide which is an absolute game changer. All Corvettes have a certain image, I get that... but if you get past that, it's one of the best modern sports cars IMO. If BMW or Porsche made a modern car with that formula (lightweight, NA v8, manual, analog, RWD, etc etc) it would break the internet. But, I get the vette image isn't for everyone. I'm in my 30s and I do wish the image wasn't so mid-life crisis haha. But that all melts away when you're carving up a twisty road with the roof open and rowing your own gears the v8 echoing off the mountains. And I know we can debate whether or not it lightweight ... its no Elise, but compared to other modern sports cars, its lighter than even the V6 competition ie Supra, Nissan Z, 911, M4, F-Type, etc. Miata is obviously lighter but slow, the only car I can think of with any grunt that's notably lighter is maybe Boxster GTS. When I was shopping, I really didn't want the answer to be Corvette. I really didn't like the image, but the more I shopped and test drove cars, the more I couldn't help but think it's the best modern affordable sports car on the market.
The C7 is peak Corvette. The C8 is nice but it's a different class of car. The C7 is powerful, handles great, sounds great, reliable, and is surprisingly daily-driveable. The interior is GM but the prices are GM too.
2008 Cayman base owner here, loving the Porsche. Came from a s2000 so somewhat missing the rawness of the Honda. Biggest issue I have is the tc/psm activating coming out of slower corners, even with it shut off. I autocross the car and can't really get the rear loose on slow corners. I think it activates the brakes and cuts power. Car does not have sport chrono so wonder if that would help. Tried searching the Internet for options but not much luck (disabling yaw sensor to kill psm does not solve issue). If anyone has solutions please let me know!
I own a 991.2 base Carrera and a 987.1 base Cayman. I previously owned a base 987.1 Boxster for 9 years. The Boxster/Cayman is more fun to drive even though it’s not as fast and it sounds better since the engine is right behind you in the cabin.
I don’t comment on videos too much but I’d just like to say that Filippo is excellent and should keep doing stuff like this after he buys his sports car!
Filippo, there's actually a new Porsche infotainment system, from Porsche, for both the 996 and 997 911, 986 Boxster, and 987 Boxster and Cayman. Plug and play, with a nice new responsive screen, CarPlay, etc.
911, Boxster/ Spyder/Cayman. All great cars. I tend to see the 911 as more of an everyday/touring car and the Boxster/Cayman as a fun exploitable sports car. All good fun, but I do love the Boxster spyders.
2011-2014 Mustang GT. Four seats, convertible available, stick or auto. Can be had under $20k with well under 100k miles. If you ever get tired of 412hp, a Roush blower kit can be had for $8k and a weekend's work in the driveway. Now you have well over 700hp and you're absolutely dunking on everyone. The Coyote engine is a glorious machine. Anytime someone starts to mention the interior, just rev the engine until you can't hear them anymore.
@@financefoodplentygaming6803 I shopped those once, got in for test drive and popped right back out, nope, too small, didn’t bother driving it. And you’re not breaking 475 reliable horsepower without yanking the engine and filling it with race car parts, let alone the drivetrain. They can be stupid fast but it takes a heckuva lot more to get there. And high hp turbo build means you’re under the hood a lot more often. Turbos are arguably better than superchargers but require more fiddling at high boost levels. Camaro is an option too but you can’t see out of the damned things. Dodge doesn’t have an engine that’s really boost ready except the ones with blowers already on them. If you’re shopping teeny STI’s and like the small cars, I’d look at waiting for new Supra prices to get to your budget level. BMW F30 3-series with a down pipe and tune makes for a cheap low key hotrod as well. But at the end of the day, the cheapest way to go stupid fast is a very used Tesla Plaid (not really a sports car) or a Coyote with 10+ lbs of boost (suspension mods galore available).
I honestly think an e46 m3 is a fantastic option if you get a clean one but make sure you allocate some cash to do rod bearings, vanos and subframe. Also, they’re not going down in value from here, they’ll only go up you can drive it for years and still make money. And with proper maintenance they can be pretty reliable. Drive one next! Also love this series!
Doesn’t compare to a true sports car like this though it is still a big heavy sedan converted to be a sporty drivers car. Idk why people always talk about the E46 M3 but you don’t hear much about the Z4M which also has the S54, a much more ridgid chassis than the E46 (even the roadster), CSL brakes, quicker steering rack, better manual, and less weight.
You really do have to take it on a good twisty mountain road to get the most out of a Cayman. It really comes alive in those environments. You feel the mid-engine balance. Right near redline and on the edge of a cliff :-).
100% correct! I've owned a '06 Cayman S since 2008, and these cars shine on curvy roads. I owned a Mazda RX-8 prior to buying the Cayman. It was a great driver's car, but the rotary engine was the fail point nobody could live with. Mine had an engine failure, and after Mazda replaced it, I couldn't get rid of it fast enough! My Cayman S is an optioned out model with 71,000 miles on it today. I've owned lots of American Muscle cars over my life, like a 1969 American Motors AMX, 2 seater, 390 ci, 4 speed car, and even a few imports like a 1974 Datsun Z car. For anyone looking for a driver's car my vote goes to the Cayman S.
At least over here where they came from, these are the ones you (should) want while the 911 is the one you (probably) get because of outside factors or because you had this and needed more. I met a Canadian Dude (guess where? The first Tim Horton's from Ambassador Bridge😅) who parked an 06 Cayman S, complimented him on it and while we spoke I mentioned the point above. Nice guy. He left later with a "there's Cookies for you all at the checkout, enjoy your stay" We were 4 people, he'd bought 8 of their top of the range Cookies just for me saying "nice car dude" basically. Canadians...you actually HAVE to love them😅
Bought a 987 and as the name indicates, this is a roadster. If you want 0-60 in 4 seconds, go get something else as the car is mainly designed for winding roads. As majority of the parts are shared with 997 / 911, most repairs / maintenance will be expensive. If you plan the DIY most things (I have been but can't do engine / transmission out repairs), this has to be THE BEST VALUE in town. I thought this would be a nightmare to change fluids, belts, etc but surprising easy.
Yes. The Cayman is better than a 911, it has always been and forever will be, the only reason why people have the wrong perception that the Cayman is inferior is because Porsche deliberately doesn't give love to the Cayman to this day. They will make the Cayman the greatest sounding thing ever, and not give it a Limited Slip Differential, Give it a Limited Slip Differential but now it has a 4 cilinder, gives it a 6 cilinder and a Limited Slip Differential but also EXTREMELY long gears so you cannot enjoy it. Then FINALLY give it shorter gearing (The shortest they could) and not only a 6 cilinder engine but the one from the GT3, and then proceed to not give it a manual so you can only enjoy that engine with a manual in a 911 😃, also, make it only in the RS model so it is in the stiffest suspension possible and not liveable, then give it supple suspension but now you have to deal with building the roof on the Spyder RS 😃 They have DELIBERATELY spoiled every chance the Cayman/Boxster chance had at being perfect.
What about a 2017-2023 BMW M240i? 4 seats, can get in a convertible, 340bhp, 500Nm (370lb) of torque, can get in a manual and actually good on fuel if you decide to be sensible! Also quite cheap now, around £15,000-£25,000 (so around $20,000-$35,000 (I think?))
If you want to maintain your frugality, try a 128i manual if you can find it. With refreshed or aftermarket suspension they feel solid and are a lot of fun with decent torque, probably a lateral move money-wise from the Fiat
I had the same 2.7 987. Unfortunately I can confirm they do suffer from bore scoring 😂 you can’t assume they don’t. But they are amazing cars, you get a proper sports car feeling
if you can't go fast with 240 hp...440 won't help :) We had the 987.1 for a while and I still miss it. Its a quick car, not fast and quick is more fun on the street. Rev it out and you are not being chased by po po. You can't say the same when the 1-2 shift leaves you going 71 MPH....
I was talking to an experienced Porsche mechanic while I was considering a 996 911 vs a 987.1 Cayman… and he said that at that price, he recommended the 987.1 by far. IMS may be exaggerated but he said why chance it…
Nobody watches these videos with a group of people, the traditional way of speaking in journalism is to speak as if addressing an audience of one. Great content
2015 Mustang gt convertable. thats what you need. back seat, tons of torque, manual. great sound. so what its not german. your wife will be happy and you will have a smile on your face when you drive it.
FInd a 987.2 base and get 20 more hp and no IMS worry since it has none! When I was in the market the 987.2 Cayman Base was the sweet spot of price, reliability and handling. It's been a great car so far. Funny how you can get one of the worlds best handling/driving cars for very little money. Not sure why.....
Filippo, this is your car. Or a Boxster. (And maybe an S.) Just don't see you buying a Corvette. EDIT: I've changed my mind. You should have got the 836hp Corvette for $40k. Living in the UK, you can only dream of that kind of cheap power. Kennan, the car you want is a dirt-cheap vehicle just for your commute, thus saving needless wear, etc. on your BMW (or worrying about it getting up to temperature). Even a Nissan Leaf would be a good buy. Yes, it's a garbage car, but not if you're only using it for a short, daily commute in traffic. (And you'll appreciate an automatic in this instance.)
the vette wouldve been a steal. this is suitable for filippo, great pick, but as for kennan, i dont think hes going to want to go out of his way to pick up an old trashy leaf just for commuting. overall, its not like him to go through all the hassle just to end up spending time in that interior, when he is at heart an enthusiast who owns and daily drives his stick shift e39. personally, id rather be driving the m5 in traffic than the leaf lol
@@musotica Really? I'd rather be in something crappy, knowing that I'm saving my special car for times when it's worth driving it. Each to their own, though. I also wouldn't go through much hassle - I'd just buy the nearest, cheapest one.
@@julianevans9548 i agree, assuming that you wish to use a seperate vehicle for commuting. me personally, id rather take my enthusiast car with me most of the time, and i wouldnt want to subject myself to a substantially worse vehicle if my cayman was an option. i just think that he, as a former ferrari owner, is unlikely to go through the effort of finding, purchasing, registering and insuring a seperate car when he dailies his three pedal m5. plenty people do go down that route though, it all depends and no shame in that!

That 836hp Corvette for 40k - wow.
Filippo is the new star of the channel. Relatable and genuine.
I love how his only frame of reference is fiat 500 or C7 and everything else is somewhere in between
The best thing about the Cayman is handling on a curving mountain road, you drove it on the freeway and around town…EPIC FAIL. Go back and start again…
😂
Big fan of Filippo's videos! He's incredibly relatable.
Filippo is the best!!
More Filippo please! Have him review cars going for sale on carsandbids too since I like this style and video format too.
Fillipo is the jam at these drives. Keep it up gents.
Joe average doesn’t know the difference between a CGT and a Boxster
I have an 987 Cayman S -- absolutely love the car.
As a valet I got to drive many 911s as well as various other porsche models, and a slightly tuned caymen is the only one I still think about. It was a great car.
This series is great, please keep it going!
LOL the intro was great
Great video, Filipio. I enjoyed all of it and was far more relatable than most reviews.
first gen cayman s owner here. its. so. good.
Absolutely loving Filippo content! Keep it up
Thanks Filippo.
Love the Cheapo Fillipo vids. For this question of sporty, convertible and 4 seater e46 M3 or E93 M3 are the only choices, surely...
Definitely interested in seeing the final choice 😁
You’ve convinced me! Great video by Filipo!
How does this compare to a new GR86 from a sports car experience?
Everyday driver did a great comparison test of the two on UA-cam.
Can't wait to see what you actually get.
It's cheaper here in China now! I just bought a 987.2 base pdk less than 15k$.
Awesome content, Filippo provides a great POV and is a natural storyteller
Hey I know this car!
987’s simply put, are just really fun. I’ve had mine for 3 years now - and even in stock form they are very capable cars.
As a fellow cheapskate and 500 Abarth owner I must say I enjoy his videos.
I own a 991.2 base Carrera and a 987.1 base Cayman. I previously owned a base 987.1 Boxster for 9 years. The Boxster/Cayman is more fun to drive even though it’s not as fast and it sounds better since the engine is right behind you in the cabin.
This actually was a fantastic review of this car
I don’t comment on videos too much but I’d just like to say that Filippo is excellent and should keep doing stuff like this after he buys his sports car!
Great car review!
Can't wait for more pizza reviews with Filipo!
Filippo, there's actually a new Porsche infotainment system, from Porsche, for both the 996 and 997 911, 986 Boxster, and 987 Boxster and Cayman. Plug and play, with a nice new responsive screen, CarPlay, etc.
How much is it?
@@MrJeepmarine$1500. Its called PCCM+ Plus. You can connect a backup camera as well.
The SL55 AMG next!
911, Boxster/ Spyder/Cayman. All great cars. I tend to see the 911 as more of an everyday/touring car and the Boxster/Cayman as a fun exploitable sports car. All good fun, but I do love the Boxster spyders.
Great video guys, but please work on the audio levels for next time. Audio was low, got loud, got low, etc.
Anytime someone starts to mention the interior, just rev the engine until you can't hear them anymore.
would it be better than a 15-19 wrx sti?
I love how Fillipo spends half the video comparing the porche to his fiat 😂
Cheapo Filippo needs his own eponymous channel.
great video, we need more of Filippo
Yes!! We need more filipo even after buys his sports car. Missed the Costco practicality test today tho.
Nice guy.
He left later with a "there's Cookies for you all at the checkout, enjoy your stay"
We were 4 people, he'd bought 8 of their top of the range Cookies just for me saying "nice car dude" basically.
Then FINALLY give it shorter gearing (The shortest they could) and not only a 6 cilinder engine but the one from the GT3, and then proceed to not give it a manual so you can only enjoy that engine with a manual in a 911 😃, also, make it only in the RS model so it is in the stiffest suspension possible and not liveable, then give it supple suspension but now you have to deal with building the roof on the Spyder RS 😃
They have DELIBERATELY spoiled every chance the Cayman/Boxster chance had at being perfect.
Great vid and review. 10/10 👍
I absolutely LOVE the color on this one.
Fillipo you are the man, "camera crews" all around you, Doug does not🤣 Great video
Filippo's the type of guy to redline his coworker's Porsche while merging.
if you can't go fast with 240 hp...440 won't help :) We had the 987.1 for a while and I still miss it. Its a quick car, not fast and quick is more fun on the street. Rev it out and you are not being chased by po po. You can't say the same when the 1-2 shift leaves you going 71 MPH....
Great video
I was talking to an experienced Porsche mechanic while I was considering a 996 911 vs a 987.1 Cayman… and he said that at that price, he recommended the 987.1 by far. IMS may be exaggerated but he said why chance it…
Did this cayman sell or is it still available. If so I’m very interested.
I’m here for the Filippo content. Any one of Doug’s cars (minus the A-class) costs more than I have cumulatively spent on cars.
Nobody watches these videos with a group of people, the traditional way of speaking in journalism is to speak as if addressing an audience of one. Great content
This is almost the answer. The base 987.2 would give you more grunt off the line while still pulling hard to redline.
2015 Mustang gt convertable. thats what you need. back seat, tons of torque, manual. great sound. so what its not german. your wife will be happy and you will have a smile on your face when you drive it.
I need to know the wheels that are on this cayman! I would switch mine out for these rims, love the look!
@@julianevans9548 i agree, assuming that you wish to use a seperate vehicle for commuting. me personally, id rather take my enthusiast car with me most of the time, and i wouldnt want to subject myself to a substantially worse vehicle if my cayman was an option. i just think that he, as a former ferrari owner, is unlikely to go through the effort of finding, purchasing, registering and insuring a seperate car when he dailies his three pedal m5. plenty people do go down that route though, it all depends and no shame in that!
incredible color too btw, love that!
