Porsche 718 Cayman T - Half the price of a GT4 but not half the car !

  • Could the Porsche Cayman T really be as good a drivers car as the mighty GT4 ? Well this high spec example is half the price of a 718 GT4 and about £25,000 less than a 981 GT4 so I thought I should take it for a drive and test my theory !

    The best Porsche is the one you can afford to buy and drive. I wanted a daily sports car that had already traveled most of its depreciation curve. So the best for me was a 2009 Cayman S w/ PDK and 72,000 miles. $28k out the door from a dealer.

    I wanted a T. In the end, a regular Cayman came up with full leather, red contrast stitching, racetex headliner, carbon fiber trim and gear knob, GT sports wheel, Bose, PDLS+, Sports Chrono, PASM, PTV, sports pipes. It’s like a luxury T to me. All the dynamic goodies, an incredible interior (the red leather isn’t too bright, it’s really lovely). I’m not sure who specified it but clearly someone that loves driving. I bought it new in Indianapolis and road tripped it back home to Boston (1000 miles) so now it’s run in! I’ve had 400 hp+ cars. Great on the track but really frustrating on the roads around me. I wanted a car I could exploit and this is it. As for the sound, I love it. It sounds like an old school Porsche and the 718 race car was originally 4 cyl anyway. The 4.0 is lovely. But I’d be stuck in 2nd gear. All the time.

    @ddelis01 Рік тому +29

    The 718 T is really underrated. I tested all the variations and went with the T regardless of cost. The flat four is awesome and somewhat fixes the long gearing problems of the 4.0 with a lower redline. The added torque makes it a better B road car than the 4.0 IMO. Plus it has the trick rear diff which the video does not mention.

      After talking myself out of a 992 911 C2S, I ordered and took delivery of a 2021 Cayman T in June of last year. The $53K USD delta between the two was just too great to overlook. I mean, that's another car in the stable, man.
      I had never driven a Cayman until the day I took delivery and as soon as I came off of the lot, I was on a twisty backroad, winding it up and marvelling at my good fortune to be able to own a car like this. I've gone through a lot of vehicles in the last 10 years, but the turn in, rotation of the 718 chassis and crispness of the 6MT gearbox was something I had never experienced prior and made me an instant, proud fan of my very first Porsche.

    On the button - Having just sold my Boxster 4.0 GTS (Manual) and bought the cheapest 718 Manual for the reasons mostly stated, I'm happy. The base car on 18"s really loses nothing and feels on UK roads the faster car. Also I'm not so apprehensive about going out in damp conditions and drive it a lot more - Its always ready to go, has more feel as there is more movement (missing the brakes and LSD though no biggie), the gearing feels about the same but you never feel you are in the wrong gear as the turbo will pull it from 3K revs whereas the N/A would keep you waiting then you are doing 75. It took me a while to realise that Porsche do really know what they are doing and the 718 4cyl is just fantastic in any form. Just buy the cheapest and enjoy it, forget the spec - your buying it to drive it not look at it! - It took me 2 years to realise. FYI I think the 4.0 is more economical, not much in it though!

    Great review, as always.
    I am constantly amazed by the snobbishness of people regarding the Flat 4 engine. Flat 4 engines are where Porsche began for goodness sake! The 356 twin cam flat 4 engines are hallowed units.
    My daughter has a 718 Cayman with sports exhaust option, and I think it sounds great. It’s no slouch either.
    I have a 991.2 Turbo, which sounds tame by comparison.
    Yes, the 4.0 flat 6 is wunderbar of course, but to my mind, the 4 cylinder 718s units (2 litre base’, (…’only’ 300ps), or the 2.5 litre S) are very capable, potent and characterful, and unfairly dismissed, either by blind prejudice, or because some people know nothing of Porsche’s history and heritage.

  • @MrRoyck10
    @MrRoyck10 Рік тому +5

    The flat four have been a part of Porsche history, I love my flat six but the flat four turbo 718 will piss all over my car, the 718 is a brilliant Porsche and deserves more respect. The flat four engines broadens the options for those who want the performance of turbocharged engine. Excellent contents.

    Another cracking video Pete. Always happy to see content involving Harbour Cars, a great team of Porsche enthusiasts! I agree totally with you that the Cayman T is overlooked. You can definitely exploit the 2.0L engine much easier on UK roads than one of the more powerful engined models. I had a 981 Cayman which I drove far more enthusiastically than the 911 GTS that I chopped it in for. Less sometimes really is more! That Cayman T will make someone really happy pretty soon I’m sure! 😁👍🏼

    A very fair review Peter…the “only 300bhp” is barely significant in the real world of driving with speed camera bike man potentially around every corner. My SL has “only 306 bhp” yet will punch any limit in seconds and is all you really need except for carpark banter. I wondered you have driven a Macan S/GTS which is not the purest’s car but my wife can’t get in anything low now so a fast SUV is fairly much our only choice…and we are not buying a Micra Hybrid whatever anybody says!!

    People tend to buy sports cars as much with their heart as they do with their head. My heart still says my Porsche should have a flat 6. It's their heritage. It's their sound. I don't care it doesn't have as much bottom end grunt as a turbo car I like it being docile when cruising and then a screaming banshee when your pushing on. Of the 718 models the 4.0 GTS (flat 6) is the one for me as I can't stretch for a GT4 RS.

    The 718 has a great chassis and excellent handling and economy. The sound on startup on choke is sadly Beetle 1600 with a hole in the exhaust. Once warm the engine sounds ok but just ok. Performance is great but has a bit of turbo lag from low revs. Torque is excellent. On a motorway on zero boost the sound on the cruise is great but pull out to overtake and the engine starts to boom, even in a Boxster with the roof up. In a Cayman it could be a nasty sound.

    The worry I would have for the turbo engined 718’s would be the depreciation against the new 4.0 GTS. I think it could be pretty brutal in next few years, especially for poorly optioned cars. Brings a few options as standard(most importantly Limited slip diff),you can tick some boxes not available on base cayman and in the end it is slightly cheaper than base cayman if both are speced the same.
    So its a value pack,and i personaly think it is probably best value(smileys) for money sportscar.

    Hi Pete. Interested to know how you would rate this against the Jaguar F type 2 litre, as you have driven that also. Are they chalk and cheese as drivers cars? The Jag gets resoundly panned by reviewers mainly for its lack of soundtrack compared to its bigger brothers, but as you said, it drives well with less weight up front. But it’s still a heavy car. I keep looking at the F type, and it’s closer to my budget, but would you say this Porsche is well worth the stretch financially? It would be mainly for refined GT cruising with occasional B road blasts.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Рік тому +2

      The Porsche is a better drivers car, especially with the manual. Still love the 2L F Type. Drives lovely and plenty quick enough but as you say just missing the sound track that is so important to the F Type 👍

    The biggest difference between the 2.5 and 2l is meant to be the throttle response, especially at lower revs in city driving, due to the bigger capacity and the variable vane turbo. As a GTS owner, did you find this noticeable and significant? I am ordering as we speak but I can’t find a 2.5l Boxter or Cayman S to drive here in Adelaide in Australia. I have only driven the 2l.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Рік тому

Conversely the 6-pot loves to be revved and sounds amazing doing so. So much of the character is different and worse. It would always be a 981 for me, over a 718. Unless we're talking GT4 or GT4RS
