Don't forget even though both have the same front strut suspension setup, the 718 (982) GT4's front suspension is 100% copy and pasted from the 991.2 GT3. Same front brakes as the GT3. The adaptive dampers from the 991.2 GT3 RS. The ABS and stability control programming are RS spec also. You don't get any of that in the GTS and even with the aftermarket, you can't replicate it.

Love my CGTS4.0. I don’t have to worry about scraping the splitter, it doesn’t get unwanted attention, and the suspension is PERFECT for spirited street driving in imperfect road surfaces. It corners so flat given its weight and the center of gravity of the flat six without being overly sprung like in an M car.

As an owner of a 23' GT4 I firstly very much enjoy how much content you have made for the Cayman platform in general, especially since these cars are no longer really in the "meta" as far as trending automotive content is concerned so thank you for that.
Definitely would agree on the fact that if you are NOT going to track the car often the GTS 4.0 would be the way to go -- much less flashy and under the radar yet still has that enjoyable experience along with all the comfort / technological features that are unavailable for the GT4. However with the 18-ways instead of buckets the GT4 is still rather tolerable for normal road driving, and can be made softer with a DSC controller. Truthfully because of the longer gearing these cars DEMAND going on spirited cruises along windy roads or doing laps on the track -- as a daily commuter or even just driving on the highway the car has an existential crisis bogging at 2k RPM which makes for a very lackluster experience & not worth it for the money, in which case I think other vehicles at lower price ranges might satisfy more adequately. That being said I love the car.. Once you have it broken in and finally push it past 5-6k RPM or floor it around a curve/turn you realize what fantastic of a vehicle it is.

Agree. Moved on from a 718 spyder for the same reason. Highway cruising is lame at 2K. I couldn’t justify keeping it, though in the mountains of GA/NC, it was glorious

Jcr (or any x-pipe) will really bring the 4.0 engine alive. If you don’t track, GTS is the better choice in every scenario. Gt4 only shines at the limit AND track scenarios. Even for canyon carvin a nicely modded GTS would still be better. Buckets+cup2 vs Sofas+ps4s will also make a huge difference for comfort.

Good review, both the 981 Cayman GTS and 718 Cayman GTS 4L are great cars, quite a few Porsche owners have one of those and by-pass the GT4 for a GT3 or GT3 RS.

  • @Cecilsays

I have a GTS 4.0. Years back I had a base boxster. In between I always had a GTI but added a couple alfas , a jag, two Sciroccos( one for 42 years) . I traded my manual golf r for a new GTS. The golf was fun and anonymous, carries 4 people or a fridge, sounds great and pulls hard.
Then I picked up the Cayman. What Volkswagen ?In 4 months I put 5000 k on it on Vancouver island. It’s astonishing. It dawdles in traffic, it flies on the track. Mine came with side warning radar. I have never been more comfortable in traffic. Because you sit on the floor it’s hard to see out to the side. Large blind spot, large mirrors that block the view on corners but it’s irrelevant because I Know what’s beside me.
People focus on the gearing and yeah , shorter is better but when I hit it, it goes. Stop crying about the gearing and shift damnit. And last , a base cayman with PDK is faster to 100 k because my car is a manual. But when I fly into a corner, shut down hard, snatch second and go , I feel like a kid. It makes me smile.
In short , any of these 718 cars are true sports cars but if you drive a manual you get a degree of interaction with the car that starts with a crisp incisive action from the shifter then those long gears. You could break every Canadian speed law in second gear. The engine spins freely and at 5000 k it’s really freeing up.
This is the end of an era. Manual transmission is history, V8 engines are down for the count, the clock is ticking ever louder on internal combustion but it’s not done yet .
I bought the GTS because it was the price for that lovely engine. It’s not relevant to me that a base car beats me at the lights. Good for that person, but for me I bought it for the sound.

Great review. You'd be hard pressed to find a decent MT GTS 4.0 under 100k though, normally goes for 100k to 120k. So I'd say it's more of a 20k price difference between the two for similar condition.

I was just watching vidoes on the 718 GTS 4.0 when I stumbled on this vid Fenton... GTS will suffice for a lot of people who will be daily driving the car with some canyon carving from time to time. The GT4 will do all of that as well, but it's too stiff for daily driving. On track tho, the GT4 is the answer. Those tall gears tho... You could practically go anywhere in the Bay Area using only 1st and 2nd gear. Lol!

    • @HLinHD
      @HLinHD 29 днів тому +3

I daily my gt4 in the summer... it's really not that stiff. If you've ever put coilovers on your car its basically that in soft mode. KW v3 in my e46 is stiffer, tein flex z in my STI is stiffer. Also imo the gearing is really blown out of proportion, there's plenty of theatre short shifting on the street. You're really not going to be redlining 2nd gear in any 300hp+ sports car from the last 2 decades on the street without destroying speed limits.

@@jonboy602 STI has amazingly short gears, and I loved them in mine for the street, can't deny that. I guess if we include highway speeds, I have to eat my words.
Still, I don't think it really changes my point, outside of an onramp pull you're going way too fast for the street. And then you're stuck driving on a highway in a straight line, in traffic, at 3500rpm droning.
The GT4 would be more fun with short gears, for sure. I just don't think its as big of a deal as every reviewer makes it out to be. When you find an opportunity to rip it, its an occasion and its still fun. I really don't hear ppl complaining about e46 m3 gearing and I'm at just as illegal of speeds at the top of 2nd gear in that car.

Otherwise, not so much as mentioned in this review. I do feel that even driving on the street, there is more of a feeling of special occasion with the Porsche GT versions. I've driven a GTS 4.0 and own a 718 GT4 and if it's not your singular only vehicle the GT4 is the pick all day. I don't regret for a moment paying more for a GT4 as the fun car for weekend canyon drives and the once in a while track day. Honestly sounds nit picky but the fact that you can't turn off the auto rev match feature on the GTS w/o also disabling the driver aids was enough on its own to bother me into passing it up. I'm sure the GTS has a wider window of uses as its designed to do, but you'll just have FOMO and be right if you like driving hard and have purchased the car mainly for A to A type driving. If you're running errands, commuting in traffic, etc. then yeah GTS without buckets no question.

The GT4 makes no downforce of relevance on the road, anyway, barely any in a track context either, to be frank. One thing I would say, spending lots to make a GTS more focussed makes no sense. Just buy a GT4 and tweak slightly. It's got most of the focus already and will retain value. Money spent modding the GTS will mostly if not entirely be lost.

Brother, you gotta try the Corvette C8 sound if you think the flat 6 sounds good.

I've reviewed both C8 Z51 and Z06 on the channel. They do sound amazing, but it's hard to compare V8 and H6

Or the sound of Audi’s amazing 5 cylinder. F6 sound decent but at certain rpm’s gets to tinny for me

Sorry but 4.0 is missing torque. It is not the best engine for Cayman. The best are light turbo 4 cylinders. Those best suits to Porsche philosophy

and that's why the 718 4 cylinders are so desired lol

    You should compare them stock...

In an ideal world. I've driven stock examples of both previously so that's baked into my comments.

@@Zygrene love your videos, mate, no hater here! But I cannot back up your statement about the GTS "sounding better"... Maybe THAT example with respect to a more or less stock GT4, but like for like the GT4 sounds better (no doubt from 7800 to 8000)... Cheers from Italy and keep up the good work! Great fan of yours!

Same interior and torque as 981. Not sure what you are looking at bra.
