    "We are all of us, always being tested, my friend. Tests make us stronger, and strength is power, and power is the point. We must pass all the tests we face… Or die in the effort."
    Pretty much epitomizes the book for me. The theme for the Rebels, the Imperials and the Sith.
    Rebels of Ryloth tested their strength against the Empire. But in their effort, failed. ... and died.
    Dray tested his resolve against Moff Mars. But in his effort, went mad ... and died.
    And a master tested the determination of his apprentice. And in his effort, he set him deeper down the dark path.

      +Antoine Bandele This book really did have good points like that. There were passages where the writing was kinda crap; there were passages that were *brilliant.*
      The relation between Sith master and apprentice though, you are right, that is a different vibe than most people are used to. It's kind of sexual tension, it's kind of violent. Sort of S&M. I know of no other place where one adult has that kind of power over another.
      That execution scene was unexpectedly touching (heh, the best kind, amirite?)

      Antoine Bandele The reason this cast is so good is because you guys don't agree on everything, and I'm not interested in watching an echo chamber, so it was great to see such a divisive topic this time. I have a different opinion on the context that Vader's fighting style is depicted. if you think about it in terms of who is fighting who and Vader is fighting against rebels, who have regular human capabilities and only physical strength to rely on while Vader and Palpatine still have their force augumented abillities. Meaning, that compared to the rebels Vader still moves blindingly fast while hes cutting them down and i think especially the way hes been depicted in media lately specifically games and books that from a regular perspective he does have very fast and powerful movments.

    "Why didn't Palpatine crush the Twi'leks more effectively; why sacrifice a Star Destroyer?"
    Easy, if you understand the sound of one hand clapping... In the Clone Wars, Sidious was effectively making his sock puppets fight each other, right? He had a Republic hand and a Separatist hand- really the same being, really the same hand, the one hand clapping.
    Sidious seems to favor the threat narrative. 'Oh, the Jedi attack put a butt on my forehead. Theyre traitors now. Give me emergency power.' Only now, it's more like theatrics too keep more power, because apparently (sarcasm) there are terrorists who are dangerous enough to bring down Star Destroyers and almost kill the two most powerful people in the Empire in one swift stroke. Well that's serious, we better build a Death Star. And if you oppose the Death Star... you want the terrorists to win.
    The right wrong answers, my friends. The right wrong answers.

    "Credits, Star Destroyers, Imperial lives, they're all meaningless to Vader..." -- Galen Marek, TFU. Couldn't help but think about this quote when discussing Palpatine's motives to play the scheme the way he did. It's a thought. What a disappointment this was, this really needed a lot more focus on Vader and Palpatine, and add things to the relationship. Kind of makes me want to write that Rule of Two Sith fanfic I've been thinking about more now, dang the idea dump I just got...

  • @adverseflower9551

    My opinion on how Vader conducted himself in fights in this book was a result of whom he was fighting against. In every situation he was in, it was required for him to operate quickly against non-force sensitive foes like the rebels who were running away or against hundreds of bugs that were bigger than him. So if he did his typical slow and steady approach it would either guarantee the rebels escape or, in the other situation, be overwhelmed by the bugs.

    Not one of their best podcasts. I don't think any of them did a good job discussing the book, it was more about stating their own opinions. While it's clear a majority didn't fancy the book I don't think they really heard out the guy who did. It felt more like ... this is my point and opinion and its better.
    *shrug*
    I really enjoyed their Tarkin review, even when there was stuff they disagreed on that didn't deter them from digging deep. Their micro-fueding (I know I probably made that word up) took away from the overall quality of the review.
    In any case I enjoyed the book. I think the title is definitely misleading but that doesn't take away from the book itself. It was a good story, especially the stuff between the Moff and that guy scheming against her. Vader/Sidious scenes were good. Rebels had a cool cast of characters.

    I sort of disagree with the point that Vader at this point shouldn't be thinking about his past life. I'm of the idea that his past life and regret were always on vader's mind. I remember seeing it somewhere in the EU that Palpatine thought that Vader clinging to his past and his guilt limited his force potential more than his mech suit. His point is backed up in the Darth Plagueis book when Damask claimed that extreme cyberization doesn't limit someone's ability to use the force. Thoughts anyone?

    Awesome seeing this new episode! As far as the book goes, it's one of my favorite Star Wars books ever (EU books included). It's all around fantastic. I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters, the story, and the writing. It did get a little boring when Vader and Sidious were slaughtering those lyleks. And I agree that the title and cover art were misleading. But luckily for us, Paul was able to capture Vader and Palpatine's power level and characters PERFECTLY because as we've seen with the new canon (Rebels in particular), Vader is weaker than he was in the EU (being Force pushed by Kanan and Ezra :/ ) but not in this book.
    Overall, I disagree with a lot of points raised. Particularly with the majority of you guys agreeing that this book was amateurish in execution and presentation. I also disagree that A New Dawn was refined. I felt AND was sloppy and unfocused and was childish in some of it's wording.

    Granted this one was not a fully supported novel like Heir to the Jedi was. It was of a more comic-bookish nature, but as far as it being a story that fits in to the greater universe of Star Wars, I enjoyed listening to it. If nothing else, it was nice to have some pure Sith action in the field at a time when there are no visible Jedi, and thus, the Sith wouldn't be directly involved as much. It's my favorite of the new novels alongside Heir to the Jedi.

    Before the Clone Wars, I only knew Ryloth from Empire at War. Ryloth was a last frontier (edge of the core worlds) world only hard to invade because of all the deserts, sandstorms, canyons and the annoyance of the populous. As always these dwebes have too narrow a Stage to, at this point even, to reconstruct a genre. Ryloth was giving the Separatists problems in TCW so they (Twileks) will only give the Empire problems so the writers can keep squeezing an old idea (not the best one) for any value due to their in-ambition to spawn up a galaxy full of problems so writers can pick and choose what they'd like to write about. It works both ways too, why did someone have to think up a new world Lothal (I've never heard of it) and a new species [(Lesots) Steve Blum.]

    I just came up with an idea for what this book could have been.
    How about a book where instead of this we get a few (4 or 5) short stories connected through the theme of Vader's physiology. Have like one with him slaughtering a load of jedi young-lings, questioning himself, then speaking to Palpatine. Maybe have one focusing on Palpatine manipulating some political issue. You could have Cham in one of them and have the short version that Reti suggested.
    This would solve the issue of the time and could be a cool little unique star wars novel.
    Just a little idea that I came up with.

    Side note, but I guess you know this by now: Vitiate didn't kill those Jedi. He merely incapacitated them. But the fact that he did it with one small lightning storm did indeed speak volumes of his power. I have another question though: Do you consider his true persona, Valkorion, viable for the Star Wars mythos? Do you find Knights of the Fallen Empire viable at all? I mean, they have Arcann channeling Force through his mechanical arm, ffs XD

    • @cloudftw113
      @cloudftw113 8 років тому

      To be fair to you can do that, it just can't be done properly without a LOT of practice. I mean, look at Vader, he was mostly mechanical. Unless it was force lightning, then all I can say is, like EA cares about the facts of the franchises they milk.

    • @warmcrunch3829

      Tom Jon I feel that when a force user makes a gesture to do something (EX: when Vader pinches his fingers.) it is more for show. They can easily do something without the gesturing but they choose to gesture with their arms. Force lightning is the only ability that is dependent on organic limbs.

    • @thedutchwolf97
      @thedutchwolf97 7 років тому +1

    I liked the book. But for me, it was very "meh." Not the best, but it wasn't terrible. I would rate it an "okay."
    The book had three plots really, at least that's how I would divide it:
    *The Vader and Palpatine story
    *The Free Ryloth movement
    *The Mors vs Dray story.
    Of the three parts, I was most invested in the Mors vs Dray story line was my personal favorite. I found myself the most invested in that particular story, and I thought (my own opinion) that it was the most well-done and most well thought out story.
    Also, A. props for making Mors a lesbian, and B. props for making it subtle.

      +SirJedi Consular Yes, the Mors line was good. I don't understand why everyone's so confused as to her competency. I mean, she was a Moff before tragedy struck her life and she just decided to stay high. She had to be a capable individual to start with. They don't just hand out the title of Moff. When she sobered up, it was like awakening a sleeping giant.
      I don't get why people don't see that.

    i know jensaarai 1 doesnt like TCW but is there anything in the clone was that he likes. would like to see what he did like of the clone wars, between episodes, ships, characters, plot lines, weapons and tech. and do a video on what he would like to improve or change on each episode( i know alot of this would be his rants) but it would be cool to see his opinions on it, i dont think he hates the entire clone wars series, i know there is some things that he does like or somewhat like. like me one of the changes of one of the episodes would be is having dooku vs savage vs ventress also add(like dooku didn't leave right away, even though i know he sensed anakin and obi-wan showing up) but having it turn into a fight of dooku vs savage vs ventress vs obi-wan and anakin. would make for an epic duel. and then during the duel dooku finds a way to distract everyone and escape with ventress on his tale and the fight would go to back to what we know of savage vs obi-wan and anakin. just my thought on one of the changes i would like to see in TCW

    How does everyone feel about SWTOR by the way?
    I feel like any of the class stories could've been its own interesting game if they were given the attention. The Imperial Agent is my favorite, followed by the rest of the Empire stories, but no story is bad, just less good than the others.
    Although some of the best parts are playing a light-side sith in the presence of a Jedi. They just can't seem to control their bloodlust. ;)

    During the time between RoS and ANW, did Sidious actually train Vader in the dark side? It seems like Vader was always out and about as enforcer or Sidious was having to help keep Vader focused on his new life, not his old one, and so not a lot of Sith training seemed to happen. Was Vader trained by Sidious in aspects of the dark side and its not depicted much?

    • @kestrelraptorial689
      @kestrelraptorial689 7 років тому

      I get the feeling it's more like Sidious occasionally gives Vader knowledge of the Dark Side, verbal lessons more than any arcane teachings, and pushes Vader in the direction of figuring out how to use the dark side to achieve his ends.

    I must admit I feel that Lords of the Sith shows Paul S Kemps failings as a writer (He's good but he has mistakes) Whenever he has a novel about a villan he ends up focusing on the antagonist (Or Lightsider) more than the villan who is the main protagonist I first saw this in Decieved but this book locked my opinion in for Paul S Kemp as a writer. (Still better than Drew Karpshen after Darth Bane POD)

    Hey there guys. I need some help. Im trying to think of a good matchup for count dooku. I want to pit him against either a Djem so, Niman, or Qui-Gon Jinn style Ataru specialist. What do you think?

    • @spookasaur3132
      @spookasaur3132 6 років тому

      In general without getting other things involved, Djem so typically beats Makashi (Dooku's style), Dooku typically beats Ataru but that depends on the being involved (think Yoda V Dooku in AOTC).

    I thought it was very lack luster, Nothing really was reviled and Darth Vader and Sidious wern't even really part of it. I dislike the way that the book focused on the Rebels more than Vader and Sidious. Star wars books always have that back and forth between good and bad guys but this book really did bring anything New to the table or amazing, it was just a run of the mill story made for the Rebels TV show which is awesome and I can't wait for more. But I really felt that this book should have been called something like Flame of Hope, or The Hunt would have been better titles. But this is what we have, still this book was OK nothing to write home about.

    My overall thoughts of this book, if I had to summarize in one word is disappointment. The tittle is one of the most important things to a book, it's part of the first impression, the thesis, the hook to why should i read this. This tittle will mislead the fans of Darth Pleagus and give you something that has shades of what you want out of a Sith based book, but not the spirit or expansion of a dark side book. In the end I got a rebels serial episode when I wanted an expansion of THE LORDS OF THE SITH. That's why this book fails for me it "lies" to you.
    The story itself was okay, but it was like Conner said, I just wanted to get back to Vader, the fight scenes, the parts the author wanted to write, that i found really good. The rest felt like filler and repetition. Plus the end of the book really pissed me off because it ended so abrupt and fast?
    Overall I can see why people like this, but it could be so much more. A real disappointment. 6/10

    I HATE CAPTIAN AMERICA. Just a pontificant, self righteous over glorified gymnast who gets favor not because of what he does (nothing compared to the master chief) but bleeding heart platitudes that just generate discord, everyone has a dark side, he claims he doesn't (avengers assemble, hated it stopped watching.) Not to mention so many of his scenes bend the fight around him, so many Hydra soldiers had the muzzle to his head and didn't fire. Ultron had a grip on his neck and for a whole 10 seconds didn't break it (his neck), and we didn't see how he got Ultron in a chokehold. Had hopes for Marvel now I'm in an anti comic movie camp: just plotless, lighthearted, glitzy animated, slideshows.
