Oh damn! Finally! I totally agree with you guys that combat in Star wars should be imagined like this across the board. What would the Sidious vs Mace and co. Fight look like as an Old Republic trailer?
My favourite part of the Return trailer is the multitude of archetypes it showcases, the learner, the juggernaut, the inquisitor, and a masterful demonstration of the naiman "undermine everyone else's strengths." Like dooku, I think if Darach could have overcome his stamina problems (like say, becoming a regular combatant in a galactic war) there would be very few opponents he couldn't beat.
Hope is still excellent, but it's definitely the weakest of the three. The best part of it is showing how non-force sensitives can put on a good showing against even heavyweights like Malgus (mostly with explosives).
Deceived is across the board fantastic, but I really like how it brings the fight to the Republic in a way we've never seen onscreen before (except maybe by the ROTS Coruscant Space Battle).

These trailers are incredible. They're so good that when one of my friends who doesn't like Star Wars and frequently makes fun of it watched the Return trailer for himself when I posted it in a chat and he said "I was going to shit talk this but I can't lie, this is pretty dope". Also, I don't think the problem with the new movies is that they aren't making what fans want. I think the problem is that they're too concerned with that. The reason Episode 7 is a New Hope rehash is because they thought that's what the fans wanted, and that approach worked well for them. They're not focused on making good movies, they're focused on trying to make products.

  • @GAdmThrawn

I can't remember when I first watched "Deceived." I think it may have been some time after it came out. I was in freshman year of high school when it was released and I think it may have been on the old Star Wars website format (or how Reti4 found out about it. It was ten years ago.) . I wasn't quite sure what it was that I was watching but it looked cool. It wouldn't be until later when the game released that I understood that was what it was for.
Speaking of TCW, I know that you guys did a thorough analysis of the discrepancies and contradictions between it and the EU, but I would liked to hear a season-by-season review of the show. Hearing Antoine's dissuasion from the show early on, I would like to know when/if all of you started to find problems and stopped watching it. I know Jensaarai1's opinion of it. I myself have stopped caring about the show once the Lost Missions were released on Netflix. It was that season that I noticed the most prominent contradictions to what I knew of Star Wars lore before it. Then I started reflecting back on the previous seasons and found further contradictions (helped along by your video) and I started to reevaluate how TCW should be viewed within and outside of the EU.
I was a little confused when I saw the "Hope" trailer. Since it came after "Deceived" I was confused upon seeing Malgus without his respirator and Vader-like armor. At that time I thought that he no longer required those things and it wouldn't be until later (probably at the time of "Return") that these trailers weren't done in chronological order.
Having watched ATLA, I just realized where I recognized the voice of the Father from "Imprisoned." It's the Republic trooper!
"Deceived," "Return," and "Hope" is my ranking. Mostly because of what's been said. I really, really, really want to play the game now.
I think it would be amazing if they could make animated movies in this way like DC has been doing for the past several years. It might even be faster than hand-drawn animation. Like, if I was put in charge of Lucasfilm at this point one of the decisions that I would make would be animated movies for Legends done in this way released once or twice a year. And the movies would have stories taking place all across the Lore and with only a select few being their own trilogies or sagas or whatnot. Like compare DC and Marvel on their strengths and weaknesses. DC hasn't been particularly strong on live-action particularly for their movies, while Marvel has become a rising juggernaut of a movie studio. However, if you want to compare their animated movies and shows, DC takes the cake every single time when they release their animated movies, and some of their animated shows have become the benchmark for other superhero animated series. If Lucasfilm can find what it is that they're good at, then they should stick to that area rather than try to be something they're not.

I've always agreed with you guys that these are like, visually what i imagine in my head whenever im reading a book or comic or just imagining star wars. like this is the aesthetic, the choreography, i envision. When you guys were discussing Malgus's philosophy and worship of the Dark Side of the Force I am reminded of a Sith character from the new canon called, Darth Momin. He shows up in a Darth Vader comic and if I remember correctly he to worships the Dark Side, but from a point of view of an artist in that the Dark Side is the only audience he needs and must create works of art worthy of it. I am wondering if there are any other Sith that shares similar views of Malgus and Momin and be interesting to look into such characters if they show up in new canon or are already existing in legends. Enjoyed this video and looking forward to part 2.

With the exception of the first scene's of return this is almost like a silent film. In many silent films narration was done. After all you can just play sound at the same time as the movie. However it was impossible to synchronize it perfectly so that's why silent films have no dialogue.
I do have some scene's that are kind of iffy for me. Like when Malcom just charges head long against Malgus. That's a really stupid thing to do in combat. I mean Malgus was at the ready and his armor is not proof against a lightsaber.

In regards to what Matt said about realistic sword fighting looking boring, I can’t say I agree but I can see where a lot of it can be. For example, I find smallsword dueling to be the most boring thing on the planet, but a longsword or a saber duel is much more dynamic and flowing.
If you’d like to see a longsword duel done both realistically and dynamically look up the longsword duel from Adorea Olomouc on UA-cam. They exaggerate their movements just enough to convey a sense of movement and to allow the viewer to see what’s going on but it’s very realistic and conveys that both the actors actually know what they’re doing.

    • @DarkenedChaos86

Because it would lend a sense of fidelity and skill to the combatants involved. As annoyed as I was when Lucasfilm abandoned the EU, I wish SWTOR had ended there as well. Everything that they've done with the antagonists from Shadow of Revan onwards is just ridiculous. Every villain is so exponentially more powerful than the last that it's boderline lore breaking. And it's just not compelling or interesting. A villain's threat level doesn't just have to come from their overwhelming power. It just come off as lazy dissapointing. I agree that the trailers were great though.

But draining life from entire planet with just his force power, and being able to heal lightsaber wounds(depends on your story options).

I didn't mind Vitiate so much if it was just him. I can buy what he was and what he achieved. Especially seeing as it seemed pretty clear to me that his ability to drain life from whole planets was rooted in rituals and external power sources, not his own innate ability. Which makes way more sense. It's more Revan, Arcaan and Vaylin that I have an issue with. Especially Arcaan and Vaylin.

If only the game had lived up to the trailers. I remember being so hyped to play Satele, Jace or Malgus....and then it turned out to be an ok but not really exciting online game

Malgus was barely in the game as well.

The best parts of the game are definitely the class stories, and I'd say some of the planetary stories can be really interesting. Voss is a great addition to the lore of Star Wars, and its nice to see the political intrigues of Alderaan.
