Backyard Bows Mathews Solocam Review

  • My favorite era of bows still is the Matthew's solo-cams and several others before and after. Chose for first blast from the past review because so may are still in circulation today. Buying used bows is not lucrative but if you can make your investment back thats a win in my book. These bows are holding right at 500 dollars and i believe will only go up.

Great video! My first bow was the Mathews Outback, which I gifted to a friend when I got out of the military. Ended up getting the Z7 as a replacement. However, the local range was bad, and most everyone I know had people hunting their properties already, so I fell away from archery.
Just recently found out local Fish and Game club had redone their target range, and added 3D range, so started back today. Was really fun getting back into it. Got a new string on order, but old string was still in excellent condition for being in storage. In all, it is basically a brand new bow. I plan on shooting a local 3D tournament league this summer with it.
As a right-handed person that shoots archery left-handed (left eye dominant) It doesn't surprise me that the left-handed bows are slow to sell. Tried selling my Z7 a year after I bought it with no luck. However, now I am glad I still have it, as I do really love the bow.

Thank you for bringing on the older Mathews bows, I have a, Heli M, Monster Chill I will never get rid of them, they are lighter, balanced. I have other later bows
Mathews Halon 7, 27 ata V3, there OK BUT there are some changes to the new ones could have left alone.

I have heard a lot of good things about the z7 and also the helium.
I also have a thing for older bows and I actually feel like I shoot better with lower let off bows.
I have a Mathews halon 32 and a Hoyt ventum 33. When I start having issues with target panic, I put those bows down and pickup a 2009 pse xforce that I still own, and It cures my target panic after a while because the lower let off reminds me of how I have to get into that back wall.
I also just picked up an old elite z28.

Man, I loved watching this video. I haven't shot for 15 years, but in 1997 / 1998 I was winning local Target and 3D leagues with my Mathews Feathermax. I even "robin hooded" a 2312. I'm interested in getting back into the hobby and am sad to see that the Solocam is no longer. I read nock travel... but (with overdraws of course) my 1997 Feathermax was over 330fps with IBO, 312'ish target, and 284 at hunting arrow weight. I'm not sure the premium bows of today are any faster, and it's hard to imagine that they are any more accurate. I have a nostalgic love of the Solocam and have been thinking about buying one of the late model Solocam's. Maybe a little bit of bias, but this video was right on time :)

It’s so interesting because when the Z7 came out I was a highschool kid dying to get a bow and got a used Mathews Outback for $450. Now knowing Z7’s float around at that price just hit a euphoric nostalgic spot in my soul

Solocam + GeoGrid = wins. When my Lost Camo Mathews Z2 stops shooting MOA at 20 yards, I'll upgrade. It was the last GeoGrid Z7..
When I called Mathews directly to ask about the Z2 and how it compared to the Z7, Matt McPherson himself got on the horn with me and walked me through it telling me that they were the same exact bows and told me I could buy a Z2 with confidence. A lot of Z7 lovers said it was the best hunting iteration because of it's compact Extreme-like size, but with Magnum cams. Mathews IS amazing at how well they take care of their family of owners.
I shot mine at a Hoyt Dealer range and the Hoyt owners with their $2000 rigs would look at me (with my 2nd hand one year old Z2 that I got loaded for $675) when I'd let one loose and say, "Damn! That bow is fast! And silent!" 😂

Used buying tip: Take some cotton with you. Run it over the limbs and look for places where it might catch and pull on the cotton. That's where you know you have compromised limbs with hairline cracks.

Wow do I feel old . I got my Mathews lx new in 2004 . I have shot every bow that Mathews have made and even the new lift doesn't shoot as smooth as the lx . Something happened to Mathews bows after 2004 as far as smoothness goes . It seems year after year they were chasing speed over smoothness . All the cams have a jerking action to them and it only got worse . If you never shot a smooth bow then you don't know what the differences are . I never worries about speed either . I have always keep the poundage at around 50 to 55 max . I'm sure speed matters to a lot of people so Mathews did what they had to do in the speed race to keep the bows as smooth as they could and people just got use to the jerking of the bows . I'm still hoping Mathews will make a new bow that is super smooth but lighter weight than the lx . You would think after 20 years they could come up with a smooth shooting bow instead of chasing speed .
