@@docsavage8640 I too prefer the original line up and style of the 1972-77 period. When i got Frenzy (there are two versions) i was a bit disappointed as they were in metamorphosis although there were some good songs in it. by the time they made "true colours" (and what a great album that was) they were a totally different band, i would have just liked a couple more "old" ENZ albums. But being realistic i suppose it was the only way they could achieve wider success. The only thing i really disliked was the sacking of the fantastic drummer Emlyn Crowther "because his drumming style wasn't basic enough".
What a classic! Being a resident of the United States, I did not know of the Split Enz until the 'True Colours' album was released. But as I've ventured back over the past year, I've found that I really dig their early stuff even more. 'Spellbound' is my new favorite...and I love the mellotron too!
Yes, Split NZ were way ahead of their time. Cannot think of any other successful band performing art rock before them. I am in utter amazement of their talent and they were always true to their style. Oh, those outfits and hair do's. Australia and New Zealand fans couldn't get enough, always performing to packed out crowds. How the poms and yanks could get it so wrong, dunno. Will always be a supporter even now at 61. The Finn brothers have more talent than any other sibling musicians, past, present and future. Makes me feel I want to live it all over again.
Yeah. I was 15 in 1976 and Aus rock then was bogan and blokey. But you didn't have to listen to the Ted Mulry Gang any more. There were these amazing guys from New Zealand. They had an interest in art and poetry. Like Bowie. And they were good musicians. They put Australian rock to shame.
then you missed a lot of things from end of the 60ś til end of 70, It`s not like "Art Rock" was new and Split Enz the first band. For example check out "Can" a german "Krautrock" Band.
As an American I've slavishly loved the Enz since '80 (hence I'm not as clueless about musical greatness from the far reaches of the planet!), but I'm really starting to appreciate their earlier material. This song is amazing. I'd delve deeper into description by adding that it's tastefully irreverent, quirky, empowered and yet enchanting. It combines several genres and then defies them all. The songwriting, arranging and delivery are second to none. Hell, they were leagues ahead of their time. Bravo!
Spellbound ... i knew to expect brilliant musicianship from these guys ( especially enjoying the bass and keys) but seldom have i heard such a remarkable performance by a vocalist . Chances are i'll be listening to this over and over as i have been and trying to come up with a proper way to say how much i love this . Phil Judd , you are amazing !
Note the date everyone, 1975. I have seen them many times live. I still remember their debut on TV here in NZ, in black and white, before colour. Love the way he slowly enters with a turned back and turns to hypnotise. Acoustic guitar intro is exquisite with accompanying instruments.
It was on a talent show like NZs version of new faces which was a UK talent show or opportunity knocks which was another popular uk tv programme in the 70s.
Wow. I grew up with these guys, still remember seeing them at the very beginning at a couple of the "buck a head" concerts in Auckland. Them later (around maybe 1975?) at a startling concert at His Majesty's Theatre this amazing song ... I remember it being longer than this, very dark, very intense. A great concert. A great band. After this period of course came Punk, Flying Nun and the Dunedin Sound. From one joy to another.
Me and my best friend got into this band when we started going into Festival Records 10th grade here in the us. Mushroom Records is much appreciated across the globe. A bunch of lost sounds.. Love how the song ends ominously.
I don’t know any other band that had such brilliant film clips like the Enz. It’s hard to take your eyes off Phil in this clip it’s like he demands your attention and he’s sure got mine. so unique and clever and so very underrated ❤
i had the chance to see them in London 1977 but though they would be back another time...what a fool i was... but on the plus side i did get to see the Ramones first UK concert at the Roundhouse 1976 and the Sex pistols and Clash pre record deal and fame between June and September 1976....i just wish i hadn't got lazy and missed out on the original ENZ.
We were 'spellbound' by their early performances in the 70s when they came from NZ. Mental Notes was an underrated album, and you can see why Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) produced their 2nd album after seeing them. In my view, much of Mental Notes was on a par with the 1st Roxy Music album (in both mood and musicianship).
Love it, as one Naive music fan said on the National program - In their crazy clown phase. They did 80s makeup when everyone else was wearing shiny glimmer flares and had gigantic Sylvia perms.
THAT THERE IS SOME SERIOUS SHIT!!! NO WONDER PEOPLE RECOGNISE PHIL JUDD AS A MUSICAL GENIUS - HIS PERSONA ON CAMERA IS TOP DRAWER. IN TOTAL AWE IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!!!
I've been listening to Crowded House/Split Enz all my life but never knew of any of Split Enz's earlier stuff aside from Sweet Dreams, Late Last Night and Lovey Dovey. Glad a friend mentioned them again to me the other day or I never would've stumbled onto their earlier music. Love the dark & eccentric atmosphere of this era.
It's hard to click "like" but only because it stands at 777! Love this: An obvious influence on the punk fashion a year before Westwood and McLaren got into the scene.
I was wrong. This is a street gang from The Warriors that was in the book but didn't make it into the movie. They're playing the long game in hopes to show up in the 2023 reboot. Scorsese is set to direct. But only if nobody manks him at the turnpike.
This song is mesmerising, I love it. I have no idea why Split Enz named their 1997 , 2 cd Anthology " Spellbound" Yet, they omit this magical track from that collection. This leaves me mystified 😕.
They were really out of this world at that time: an odd mix of Prog, New Wave, Art Rock, etc. Sooo many influences put into their music, just like Bowie who used bits & pieces in his music. Even the Makeup and costumes. Very P. G. and clownesque. Damn, those times were great and unique! Too bad I missed all that, oh well... Luckily there YT now😁👍
Phil Judd went on to have a massive hit 'Countin' the Beat' with a trio called The Swingers after he left Enz to be replaced with Neil Finn. Some things were meant to happen.

Dang already commented on several of their videos, Split Enz and beyond. Wonder if anyone knows how Phil Judd is doing; seems he was an early artistic influence but kind of fell away in the late 70s, early 80s.
Yet to recognized just how unique this bunch were. With Phil they were at their best.
Bless the Enz.

No Phil Judd = no Split Enz, at least not as anything more than a good pop group

I'm ashamed to say I've never heard this until today, a New Zealander of 54 years. This is sublime.
Phil Judd came from hastings hawkes bay . And went to hastings boys high school my old town grew up there as a kid in the 70s 80s .good days.

Easily my favourite Split Enz song. Just an absolute work of art. So God damn spacey.
Such a great album, and this is one hell of a song. NZ's finest. Wish Wally had not been kicked out, he looked and played great.
Same applies to Emlyn Crowther, and their excuse that he played "too complicated for their more basic style"
Damn, this brings me back to my youth, driving around in my little VW🥰❤️

Phil is absolutely amazingly fantastic in this performance. This song has a great funk to it. Love on ya' Phil ❤❤❤
Phil Judd really had me spellbound watching this clip!
Sphere Productions the man is a musical genius.
A unique mixture of talent way ahead of its time... which makes their music timeless.
Been watching your magic since the mid 70's in Melbourne, Phil...

Thank you 2JJ for introducing me to Mental Notes!!!! Back in the 70s!!!
Short-lived Grunt Machine TV show, filmed Avalon Studio 8, Sydney 1975. This is one of very few (3?) surviving clips from that show.

i've been waiting to see the good quality version. one of the best ENZ songs sung by the best.
my fave split enz song - and this whole album has me spellbound : )
amazing song and an amazing vocal performance.
My favorite Split Enz
Pink Floyd, The cure, Talking heads y Supertramp...todos reunidos en una banda.
pero antes...genios realmente incomprendidos
Sumale Genesis y Roxy Music
My thoughts, exactly.
No pink floyd
I was a kid in '75,saw them live at the Palais, blue my mind, already had Mental Notes-my poor parents, lol
Thank you Phil….so good
Bravo, possibly Aotearoas' best song ever...saw this when I was young, have been a better person since...

Chunn or Griggs, they are both amazing.

Sort of like rock meets "Cabaret." A great look at and early version of the Enz.
A bravura performance by the great Phil Judd, who turned 61 on March 20th!
Oh Yeah, Brillliant Original Prog Rock from NZ.
Along with with Log Cabin Fever this is possibly my favorite split enz song.
An amazing New Zealand band.
GOLD..!!!!
I never rated Split Enz till I heard this glorious tune.....a bit of Bowie and the Faces in there
a head of their time .awesome
This have a very Pink Floyd -Animals era vibe, and it was made before Pink Floyd's Animals!
