I never saw any of their videos until the last year (I didn't think to search for them), but as a kid in the 70's I thought their music was awesome. Great to grow up to Skyhooks.
What time was Mike Willesse’s show on? I was 10 at the time & this is the first time I’ve seen this! Shirl is doing live vocals! Fcking excellent ✌️🇦🇺👍
Smut for me just because they sang about something that was not to be talked about plus coming from NZ those theatres were just not know about in the 70s.
Shirl was the lone pilot on a HELICOPTER, when a massive down draft smashed him to the ground. 29th August 2001. One of the saddest and greatest losses of all time and I mean in 4.6 Billion years of existence.
I can't believe the ODD ways Aussie lead singers die. Drown in your own vomit, brain cancer, not many suicides, etc, etc. And their always the bands you love..😢
It’s actually an antenna for the blu-tooth guitars, so they don’t need any amps or speakers. A lot say Australia was late to get colour TV (1975) but we had blu-tooth umbrella arrays before anyone.
Awesome Aussie band with the real Aussie culture now sadly defunct in it's own land..... go Freddie...... play that umbrella... great voice Shirl, great outfit Bongo..... what a great band and social satire.... Yeah !!!! .... priceless intro by Mike Willesee playing the straight guy....
It was not live-to-air, it was not seen until several weeks later. There was a load of post-production was work done on the program master due to a loss of mains power taking out the video recording van.
Oh how I adored them back in the day. Thanks for posting this sensational clip -----All the best to dearest Redmond and Gregory if they, perchance, are reading this........xx

Listen to that guitar riff at 2.53 by Bongo and it sounds a bit like part of the song “Gloria” written by Van Morrison and recorded by The Doors. It has some of the characteristics of Chuck Berry too and parts of other riffs of other Skyhooks Greg Macainish songs too. That’s what made the Skyhooks such a great creative band. They were a great for guitar band that played good songs. The drummer is playing his umbrella here and singing backing and harmony vocals.

Just wondering, Peter... the original clip of Million Dollar Riff (along with quite a few others) has been absent from UA-cam for a few years now.. I SO enjoyed reliving the experience while they were here; Do I need to go to my VHS "Right There On My TV" cassette in order to enjoy them again?
Yes not sure why some have gone awol. For our UA-cam page we tend to keep away from the obvious and clips . When we put together the Right There on My DVD release I pretty sure it was on that. It sold a platinum dvd award, so at least 15,000 dvds of it out there. ... or you could play your old video, LOL.
I think Bob had spare tiles left... used at the Palais too and eventually our house at Osborne street Sth Yarra..well Bongos house. Recycling at its best.
But they have more style. Not too mention, they were the first to point out that watching the evening news on TV was akin to watching a horror movie....this back in the seventies.
I never saw any of their videos until the last year (I didn't think to search for them), but as a kid in the 70's I thought their music was awesome. Great to grow up to Skyhooks.
Sadly missed Shirley RIP never forgotten!
Was nine years old when I saw this on Mike Willesee's show. This is still my most favourite song from Skyhooks.

Pity we never competed in Eurovision in those days, I would have loved to see SKYHOOKS let loose on unsuspecting europeans !
they scared the Americans ion that 1976 USA tour! Except Jacksonville it loved Skyhooks.
I knew Shirl, as his parents have been friends of my Mums" for years. Always loved his music, Lynne XX
Lynne Obrien I knew shirley and I can not remember him talking about u
brilliant vocalist. real funny guy too. miss him alot ;(

I appreciate them more now than as a kid.
The Greatest of all OZ Rock bands!
wow that drummer can really pull some great beats out of that umbrella
It’s actually an antenna for the blu-tooth guitars, so they don’t need any amps or speakers. A lot say Australia was late to get colour TV (1975) but we had blu-tooth umbrella arrays before anyone.
One of the funniest comments I've seen in a long time!
@@mebeasensei Pre-colour TV, it would have been called blacktooth..
Hahahaha first thing came to my mind- singing to a track so of course the drummer is hamming it up out front 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
On shows like Willesee it is pre recorded music but the vocals were live . Countdown on the other hand was all live for Aussie artists
Shirl knew how to dance and entertain god love him RIP
Was one of the best misio
Got some of their albums in my collection. I'm a lucky, lucky man!
Living In The 70's turns 50 this year! Amazing!
I ACTUALLY REMEMBER WATCHING THIS ON TV THAT NIGHT
R.I.P SHIRLEY

Fred you are a freakin' Legend.
I was 13. This band was way out there. Melbourne boys.
+Wayne Ogston
Yeah, I lived in north warrandyte. Greg McCainsh lived down the road. Those were the days. Nostalgia.
I still pound this out on my car stereo and when the doof doofs are next to me more so. 😂

First heard Living in the Seventies on a bus witch turned out to be my first date, have been a fan ever since.👍
Shirley Strachan was an amazing person, front man and TV presenter.
Go Freddie go! Play that umbrella!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Shirl. What a pro. No lip syncing for Graeme Shirley Strachan.
He's obviously lip-syncing.
@@banishedfromthedwarfplanet530 you are wrong there BFTDP!
@@banishedfromthedwarfplanet530 I was on the crew, there was no lip-sycing done there.
Definitely NOT lip-synching. The music is clearly not live, but shirl? Totally live.
Oh boy we love them for ever skyhooks
Awesome outfit Freddy! RIP Shirl 🕊💝
Best unbrella player since Ringo star!
Love love skyhooks
Imagine what these blokes could do with the music technology today
Keep playing solid rock Gold 👍

It's almost like they deliberately included riffs from other songs!!! 🤪
Only a genius like you would have spotted it! 😄
Bob is a huge Chuck Berry fan....
🎉🎉oh yeah!
thats fricken awesome, live vocal is killer!!
I love the sound of the wah Wah pedal @ the start.
Gotta keep searching! Thanks Skyhooks, love you all oxo
great post, cool
You can tell by the body language and mikes attitude he doesn’t like the hooks 😂😂
They were cool and talented
LOL Bongo in a Space Helmet
RIP Shirl😢
Bongo legend! 😂😂😂😂
How good was Shirl as the front man?!L
Brilliant Aussies.
Thousand Drums but only one Umbrella 🤪🤪
RIP Shirl ❤
The mighty hooks live on and Willesee is long forgotten

Awww...look how young Shirley is...God rest his soul. I was 12 when this was released...yikes.
Great miming!!!
How good does the Drummer look????!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are miming, that pool cue is not even plugged in
Bo Selecta Yes & No. As was usual for Skyhooks, a music track with live vocal by Shirley Strahan (the singer)
yes that umbrella isn't even miked for sound! LOL
Still the best bunch of drongos alive-except for the dead ones.
One word... ACID 😂
Lead Umbrella ?lol
Umbrella drumma
Drumbrella
I wonder if this song had an influence on AC/DC's Let There be Rock which came out around a year later? I hear a lot of similarities
Why the checker board floor?
Please...don't say Fr333ma5son

me with the umbrella
My husband has the box set of all their albums...He's a tragic !
Coolhooks
The bubble had basically burst now. This was starting the decline. Willesee first with the news. 😅
Australia used to produce so many great bands,,what Happened.?
1:00
Lip sync was great back then lolz, wow what a flashback, miss Shirl & the Hooks.
No lip-sync on that show, it was recorded live on 24 track.
Live vocal from Shirl...
Take no prisoners
What's Freddie on? Not too much drumming goin' on. 😂
Why wasn't the drummer drumming?
Same things every other band has ever sung about!
But they have more style. Not too mention, they were the first to point out that watching the evening news on TV was akin to watching a horror movie....this back in the seventies.
(Hits gong)
"You're the kind of band that gives 'failure' a bad name". (Holds up scorecard): 4.
House of Shuffles yes, Red! :D
Skyhooks music is on a par with
Kiss - strange - I never got it.
Pretty tame by today's ''standards''.
Uh, is that really Bongo, or a stand in doing the rip off Gloria solo?
Poor Drummer!
Great song, great theatre, but aaaaaargh, that 70s dancing by Shirley makes me puke.
This must have been thrash in 1975.
