- Philip Judd (Mandolin/Vocals), Brian Finn (Piano/Vocals), Paul Wilkinson (Guitar), Michael Chunn (Bass) & Geoffrey Chunn (Drums) performing on the New Faces talent show in New Zealand, 18/11/1973 (129) and 25/11/1973 (The Sweet Talkin' Spoon Song). Footage shot by Dick Finn off the TV with his Super 8 movie camera. Thank to Neil Finn for the restored footage.

Phil Judd and Tim Finn were a force that should have powered on. Big respect for both of those geezers.
Phil and Tim released a single in the 90's called "The Long Hard Road".
James Pealing I’ve often wondered just what might have been, had Phil remained in the Enz & perhaps been able to collaborate with Neil?
The band was not big enough to hold Phil Tim AND Neil
@@NagoyaHouseHead Perhaps not; however, the history of Split Enz is full of missed opportunities. There was something about their very early sound that was never recreated or built upon. I think as a band they seemed to have a lot of cognitive dissonance regarding their image and what their music represented. Were they too arty, not arty enough? Hence the rerecording of several of their early songs. IMO, the Beginning of the Enz songs were rerecorded to lesser effect whilst the Mental Notes songs were improved upon - the politically incorrect term would be schizophrenic. The second missed opportunity was the period immediately before 'Fenzy'; John Leckie wanted to work with them, apparently, and they had heaps of quality demos they could have built from. I don't know what happened with that. 'True Colours' kind of came too late in a way and the Beatles comparisons were unfair.
@@paulw6057 Penetrating analysis my man. Agree on all points. Yes I think there was a huge amount of tension in the band from start to finish really. The early work was a really quite unprecedented exploration of schizophrenia via Judd's input. Hard to break a kiwi band in the 70's and they deserved much more. It all came together on True Colors, big shiny pop songs and commercial success. But by then I think they all knew that despite the breakthrough album they were simply not gonna make it over the long haul. Ironic that Tim jumped first, thinking he could do better solo. And Neil helming the ship on See Ya Round was poignant when he sang I Walk Away From You.
I only recently started watching videos of their early Phil Judd music. Fantastic. The boys were so tight from day one and playing such complex arrangements with very difficult rhythms and transitions. Every band member worked hard to pull those songs off. And Tim Finn, who later just sang and played guitar, is a fantastic piano player. The band is a once in a lifetime phenomenon we are unlikely to see playing again, but if they do, I’m catching a flight to wherever they are playing.
we need singers like these now , good fun and good songs .
everything is covered up and no one is stoned .
I remember this song as Matinee Idol from the Mental Notes album. So fun to see this early recording!!
I just love the feeling i get inside when i hear ENZ music! Nothing like it, or them for that matter 👌
Reminds me a bit of what Sparks were doing about the same time.
My thoughts too, Roxy, Cockney Rebel, Sparks definitely.
Quality songwriting even then!
This is just priceless....Tim, you've come a long way baby!! Enjoyed this so much!!
My most favourite band in the world
Mine too, followed by Crowded House
Great,so inventive,
God I remember this night, I was 12, I remember being so impressed. The next day everyone was talking about it, not in a real good way I must admit.I had never heard anything quite like it on NZ TV. Thanks for sharing, and good on ya Dick, R I P.
+SuperMarksman33
LOL I remember this night too...same age ( '61 model.).... there was
only one channel back then haha........I remember my older brothers
being impressed with them and saying they should win
and being pretty disappointed when they didn't......I saw them a couple
of years later peering through the Venetian blinds at a pub in
town.....I was impressed.....then saw them next at the first Sweetwater
festival at Ngaruawahia in 1980.....they had been away overseas for a
few years......Elvis Costello was top bill but IMO these guy's stole the
show....when they did "I see red" the crowd just went mad...
.....great band....great times.....awesome memories
I saw them in their first gig in Aus and they were booed off the stage by bikers calling for Billy Thorpe (1976). I was 1 of 20 dancing and loved it. Met them back stage too. Blacktown was a cultural desert and Split Enz certainly made an impression.
Thanks for posting🙏🏻 Sweet Talking Spoon Song is absolutely brilliant! Phil with long hair 🤩😍🤪
This is great stuff. Enz fan here from the States since we got "I got you". Then I got caught up and have been a devotee since. You can hear the, forgive the pun, genesis of what was to be.
At least you didn't say "beginning of the Enz"...
This is an awesome friggin song kids of ENZ 2022!!!!!!!
Just seeing this for the first time, today. Thank you for posting it. Matinee idols, indeed!
look i just got to say it. musical genius, that's all these guys were and are. from this little nation, just unbelievable..
my wife and i have loved the enz enz enz from their early beginnings.
i admit it at first we didnt quite get it but then we listened and boom.
there it was this music.
saw them at the ohope hall and there was even a dog in the audience. even
he knew how good they were..
love the enz..
ps is there a recognition of the finn boys in te awamutu ? because if there isnt there shud be..
all the best to you guys. your music brought us so much pleasure.
thanku..
I can recal watching these clips live as a 13 year old and enjoying the quirkiness of it all, especially by the.time they got to Nambassa festival in full flight/regalia in 77 was it?...cant recal which but i was at them all...ah,them were the days....
i bought a mandolin seeing this vid.love it phil judd thanks
I loved them, awesome.. so creative..
I absolutely loved seeing that - very, very special. I wasn't even born yet but Split Enz were one of my first musical loves in my mid teens, when I acquired Enz of an Era ❤
The arrangement of this song is inspired.
Wonderful. We remember split enz from these tv shows no one else other than Space waltz.
Brilliant vintage Enz sheer genius!!!!
Amazing bringing back a shard of memory from my NZ childhood!
Great memories indeed
Classic early songs. Sweet talkin' spoons!
First saw “The Enz” on a Thames Television magazine programme Today when they were on their first UK tour in 1976…
I was amazed!!
So young!
Scene missing because Finn Senior was changing Super 8 cartridges. lol
Wonderful - our very own Beatles on Ed Sullivan Show moment!! I agree with Phil - they was robbed!
Thanks Phil! Great to see and hear.
This is awesome ❤
Love all their records, but Mental Notes is still my favorite.
Hi Phil. Thanks man.
Wow absolute genius
As the end credits say, the TV screen was filmed by Trevor Langley, not Richard Finn. He switched off the camera during the instrumental sections so he wouldn’t run out of film.
That's cool to see. Boy have TV filming techniques have sure improved! This is pretty shoddy camera work. LOL
such an amazing band, for me nothing they did in the late 70s onwards holds a candle
NO IDEA THAT SPIT ENZ WHERE AROUND IN 1973 AND I WAS A HUGE FAN.
glorious. wonderful footage, Geoff Chunn on the skins! grumpy Phil looking half happy.
A cross between The Beatles, Jethro Tull and Mother Goose ...
+Fuz Capp You left out barbershop quartet.
With a hint of The Move?
My goodness.... Mother Goose, I'd forgotten about them, added for the kooky element I'm guessing
Incredible.
i recall seeing them play in the Ohaupo hall, i was all of 10 and with my cousin of 18 ..i thought OMG what is this ...from then on it was noting but underground music from the Chills, the Clean The Verlanes to the New Plymouth band No tag..all Flying Nun or Jayrem music labels absolutely noting from the radio
Thank you
Fabulous stuff...thank you for posting
The Lift Off With Ayshea version of David Bowie’s Starman which was later wiped out was also filmed in Super 8 cam off from
TV but still not yet restored, shown, and released!
Awesome!!!! Thanks for putting this up.
Listen to that! 'New Faces' could be an early REM recording... 20 years before REM released 'Out of time', with that typical mandolin sound, these guys did this...
'New Faces' is the name of the television show... not a song.
Koen Grauls REM are a bit overrated but I know that is just a matter of opinion but that's just my thought.
They could never replicate the brilliance of Second Thoughts.. No one could!
Phil Manzanera dumped stardust on that album.
I was 16 yo sitting mesmerized in front of the tele in Blenheim. Could I believe this lot came from our little nation? NO! Phil Warren was right, they were too damned clever by half!! LOL.
nice!
Wow Split End z.. How Cool can ye get. DEF Early 70s Influence. MIX of Beatles. Gong Planet Gong. X / Pink Floyd. / Some 60s ELP. Some Great Ingredients. XXX Ice- Maiden. XXX
Incredibly strong musically , lyrically , I do think the later artzy image undermined that focus some what.........
All these NZ bands are my new favorites! Why was the NZ music scene like the best in the world!?
dunno...unique ?
@@englandshope689 Uh, I thought it was shite in the 70's. Believe me, this performance on New faces was a revelation nation wide. You should have seen the dross Split Ends were competing against, and they still only came second 'cos Phil Warren thought they were a 'bit too clever!'
The sound quality is great ! How is that possible ?
It's overdubbed audio, hence why it keeps running when the video track wasn't working.
As a Kiwi music nut buying LP's since I was 14 in 74, so had the usual Floyd, Bowie, Tom Petty later..dismissed them because of tall poppy syndrome, even though saw them in 76 at Town Hall/Civic...then in 82 while in Sydney, got Tims solo album and thought OK..then, totally hooked, got all albums saw Enz or an Era concert in Sydney...still totally love music and those lyrics...'With out a Doubt', the best rock band ever from Kiwi land..those Aussies can keep their grubby mitts off them.
Kiwis only want Australian benefits.
Without the Aussie's "grubby mitts" they wouldn't have had their first record deal and their big break.
Big love for gen-1 Split Enz and their initial period of devil-may-care determination to break out and get noticed in quiet little early-70s Kiwiland. But really, they didn't stand a chance until the next big revamp when Neil came on board and they stopped playing silly cabaret clown shows and got serious. Frenzy was the breakthrough album and of course True Colours was T H E B I G B R E A K !
I love Split Enz, but that talent contest showcased one of their best tracks, followed by one of their worst, unfortunately, no wonder they lost!
The year I was born. The band look barely older the babies here too.
I remember a judge telling them to give it away and go home. Is this a false memory .
Which one is Neil @ 0:04? He must be second from left? Wow. They don't look any older between the '70s and the '80s, but they all look like entirely different people.
LeavingIt Blank Neil didn't join the band until four years later, In 1977. Phil Judd is second from left. And they are different people. Most of these guys were replaced thru the years, except for Tim, on the far right.
Oh, okay. I confused SE with Crowded House regarding the Tim/Neil thing.
i wish they were stiollv famous now itn*throw it back* tik tok wheres e veryone gone
When did they change from "...Ends" to Enz?
When they came to Australia the first time. A nod to NZ.
*2021
Was this 1873 lol. Not the best video I've ever seen. Cool to see very early Split Enz
Oh dear
What happened to original video tape version? Was it wiped out?
NZBC were doing the same thing the BBC did but for longer
I doubt the NZBC taped it. This was recorded by the Finn family on super 8....
Is Wally W playing a Tele there?
How did you get hold of these ‘missing’ scenes?
You can't unfortunately.
Was original master tape wiped out?
I remember watching these. They look horrifyingly young> I had to look up who won - the Bulldogs were rea;;y just a novelty band, or so it seemed to me, but OTOH Sweet Talking Spoon Song was ... not one of Phil & TIms better efforts as a song
Jesus :O
Reminds me of Stackridge or something.
These lads were immersed in progressive rock...Finn Judd could of been in Genesis or Family at this point
Looks like the mom and dad didn’t like the instrumental segments
They're recording the thing on super 8 from the tele. I think they probably had to keep putting in new reels of film.
surely you mean Tim Finn not Brian Finn
Tim's actual first name is Brian.
They all went by their middle names with the exception of Phil Judd
brian finn...?
Brian is Tims first name
Everybody except Phil used their second name.
+Bump
Big Enz..
(y)
Is that a mistake in the video description, or is there a Brian Finn playing piano on this?
Justin Stewart Tim is his middle name. They all used middle names mostly. Brian is his first name
Split Ends ? Split Enz
They were Split Ends in 1973. They changed the spelling to Enz when they took off overseas in 1975.
@@LeeBee-hs6mj Apologies.Learn something every day.
@@OldFliersGroup no worries :)
They was robbed!
I always thought the words were "cheek to cheek" not cheap striptease hahah!
no brian, niel finn ....no Split Enz!!
In the enz it didnt matter where they came. The Judges were all out of touch.
Well the Beatles were lucky to get signed as well. Sometimes bands are too far ahead of their time.
I had no idea they were active in that era!
Hey guys! Do you know that Alastair Riddell is the worst thing what happened to me? I always thought Neil Finn was the worst creepy New Zealander but actually not! Alastair Riddell is terrible! Poor Neil Finn!
+Dyane Myystery what do Neil and Alastair Riddell have to do with this video?
The ambiguous kendo peripherally drag because balance corroboratively pack via a comfortable stem. murky, zonked stock
Alastair Riddell makes me sick!
+Dyane Myystery What you see is the way you are!
+Dyane Myystery what has Alastair got to do with this?!?
