      I felt the same way after picking up my D-18. There’s just something about the resonance of the strings, the iconic Martin Mahogany sound and the surge of joy that courses thru you after picking up a D-18. In addition it’s not so expensive that you’re afraid to take it out. Enjoy it and thanks for the review. Looking forward to your next review where we might be able to hear the others you missed?

    Really enjoyed that. After owning a (very) vintage Martin, I have really started appreciating old wood. A new guitar takes in the region of 10 years to open up in my experience, if you play it a couple of hours a week. But also - a guitar is a) an individual (they never sound the same), and b) personal to you. You need to have that click. So yes, if you have 10K to spend, I would recommend playing as many as you can, including vintage, and look for the one that is love at first hearing. I am a huge Martin fan, and I wanted a 000-28 Amberburst, but when I tested 4 of them side by side, none of them spoke to me. And I bought an Atkin J43, which is a relic'd Gibson J45 copy. I never lusted after an Atkin, but this guitar just spoke to me, connected with me, and I just wanted to take it home after playing guitars that were much more expensive. Similarly, I had a $1300 Yamaha that was just amazing. If you are in the market for budget, check out Yamaha, they are fantastic and solid wood. So - always trust your ears. And when you're ready, buy a guitar with the view of never selling it. When you form a bond, when you play it for decades, it makes a difference. It becomes more than a possession, it becomes part of how you see yourself. Happy playing everyone!

      A luthier once told me it takes a long time for a guitar to forget it was a tree, and I believe that! My main gigging guitar now is a 1968 D-18. It’s just so… bold. Not subtle, but it cuts through anything. I took it camping in a rainforest, and it did not give a dang about the humidity. I’d get up in the morning in the misty rain, and it sounded fabulous, even though my fingers were swollen and sticky from the air itself. I have a couple of high quality guitars from the 80s and they’re also just so, so alive. I recently got my first new-new guitar in 20 years (a Larivee L-09), and it’s opening up SO fast, changing almost daily. It’s going to take 10 years to fully stabilize, I think. But it’s so well made, and the wood is so fundamentally good, I think it’s going to be a monster.

      @ Larivee is excellent, for sure. And they’ve never sacrificed quality, resorting to laminated woods or offshored production, just to make more product and more money. They make guitars designed to last 100 years or more, and sell them at prices non-millionaires can afford. My collection includes vintage Martin, Mossman, Lowden, and more, and my Larivee is on par with any of them in terms of sound, construction quality, and beauty.

    • @jazzyonno
      @jazzyonno 29 днів тому +1

      @@davestagner I agree that Larrivee makes great guitars, and so does Lowden. Lowden is upper echelon, though, on a par with Collings for their 35 and 50 series. But I like that Lowden's guitars are different and not trying to copy Martin or Gibson. There are many great brands, we are spoilt for choice these days. Just buy with your ears and try everything before you do! For instance, just the wood choice is something lots of guitarists don't even consciously consider, which is mad to me.

    I had a Martin HD28 and sold it because over time I fell in love with the more standard Martin D28. It is interesting that those modified guitars sound great with new guitar strings, but lose their freshness with slightly older strings and sound dull. You are right, if you buy a Martin guitar, buy a classic D18, D28, D35, without modifications.

    I went to buy an acoustic in 2015, to sing along to. Initially I wanted to spend sub 1k on an okay guitar. When I tried some more expensive ones I noticed that you do get better sound for your buck, so I tried myself up the price scale. Finally went home with a D18. It was 4 times the money that I wanted to spend, but to me, it had the perfect, archetypal acoustic guitar sound. I already was heavily into Dave Matthews Band and Irish music, so I knew what a good guitar sounds like. The D18 had perfect definition and string separation, with exactly the warm but woody, mid-rangey tone I love. Problem is, I discovered at home that with my average, not very defined voice, I struggled to cut through the Martins well defined chords, actually it was the other way round, the D18 chopped up my soft kind of weakish vocals. So I returned it and got me a Taylor with rosewood back and sides for a couple hundred quid less, which by itself had a lot less "personality", but made a perfect, mellow carpet for my voice. I think Martin changed some small things about the D18 shortly after, and I never again found one that embodied my idea of a perfect guitar tone like the one I returned. I think of it to this day and regret ever handing it back to the dealer.

      My sympathies, we all have guitars that we still think about, opportunities lost. W.r.t singing, can I give a tip? It seems to me that you have little confidence in your voice and therefore you are singing with low volume. This does not work. You need to belt. Sing your heart out, don't hold back, don't think of what others will think. Soon you will feel much more confident and will get much better. Either sing 100% or don't. And pick songs that fit your range, if you find you can't reach some notes in the song, don't sing it. This also helps build your confidence. Hope this helps! Keep making music.

    2019 D-28 Standard player here (my personal favorite): I've put 1200 hours of stage time on this one instrument in the past three years. It even had a P-Bass headstock punch a hole in the side once, and it's still kicking. Aside from sounding awesome, it's an excellent workhorse with ridiculous tuning stability. Personally, I rarely play my Gibson, Taylor, or Maton anymore.

Ten years ago I purchased a 1956 D 28 and now I'm on the hunt for a prewar D 28 and prewar D 18...and that will conclude my Martin splurge this lifetime...to all who have never tried one..be warned..once you play a Martin, you are an addict for life, and the older they get the stronger the addiction..and they always hold their price and only increase in value...so treat them well...especially humidity considerations....always keep in a case when not being played, and wipe the strings before and after every session...that's it....of course all my own opinion..I thought your analysis was spot on and very helpful to interested buyers....still hoping I find a D41 Pre 1970 which is the all the bells and whistles detailing

      Um....not true, although I think everyone can appreciate the brand loyalty. I have a fair amount of history with Bob Godin's guitars, being a good Canuck and all. My first serious acoustic guitar purchase was a Seagull Artist Studio, which at the time was their top of the line acoustic. It was beautiful and had a really nice sound, but it didn't sound like a Martin (I've owned a 000-18 since 2014 as well as a couple J12-16s). I also was friends with a guy at that time who had owned an S6 for several years until the neck twisted so badly it became unplayable. The thing that led me to eventually sell my beautiful Artist was when I watched a video where Mr. Godin did a factory tour and proudly stated that their guitars were so rugged because they epoxied their necks to their bodies. That's not what a guitarist who envisions keeping their prized acoustic for the rest of their life wants to hear. I sold my Godin Artist and bought a Martin. I have owned several other Godin brand guitars since then as well, by the way.
      The S6 was always a good value for money guitar for people without a lot to spend, but there are plenty of other, superior guitars available for the same price range.

    The differences in a guitar’s tone are only appreciable by a guitar dweeb (like me). For the other 99% of the human population, the differences in any song played reasonably well, as Brett certainly can, on nearly any “good” quality guitar above around $500, are lost. It’s more in the recording and mixing, or if a live performance there are even more variables.
    I realized years ago, when I was getting serious about road racing bicycles, that people go to extremes over the most trivial things. It’s up to you, the consumer, to decide which things are significant to you, and which are hype and nonsense.

    Every Martin where? I bought my D35 after trying 300+ Martins over 2 decades. I think the HD28, D35, and HD35 is where you will find your Martin if you have the cash and are not a classic bluegrasser. The bracing in these makes for more easy bass response and a "smiley face" timbral spectrum (also conducive to fingerpicking). More expensive Modern Deluxe and D41, D42, and D45 models will have the same response (or better) and more bling.
