    These guys were SO ahead of the curve. For the mid-70s, this is a thing of its own. Not quite glam, not quite punk, not quite prog, but somehow elements of all and more. Such a great band that I have been lucky enough to have discovered as a younger lad growing up as a teen in the 2000s/2010's thanks to the advent of streaming/UA-cam.

      It's most akin in at least the visual fashion to have taken a cue from Peter Gabriel's Genesis costuming and theatrics. Your description of the music, though, is very apt. A bit of glam, punk, and near-prog, plus the future addition of New Wave Pop in the mix have made them the one perennial fave I have out of all the oldy, moldy classics. When you've never got it off on that revolution stuff, and even TV is at times more filling than T. Rex, when Led Zeppelin goes down like a leaded baloon and The Who leaves you asking "Why?"
      This is the space, the place, that Split Enz fills in my life.

    God these guys were so fabulously eccentric, they never get enough credit for how innovative and out there they were. I guess the later pop era has obscured the Phil Judd years for alot of listeners.

    • @PHDWhom

      My first exposure was "I Got You" courtesy of Mtv. It wasn't until several decades later in my life, when I became restless as I do, and bored with what I'm hearing, that I got to exploring, and discovered the Phill Judd era. And I do believe that this video was the thing that put me over the fence.
      Imagine a tour featuring this era Split Enz, with Cardiacs, possibly Henry Cow or something on the bill.

    this song, along with "Late last night" were the standouts on "Second Thoughts". it's a pity the second album was half made up of re-recordings of earlier songs.
    Split Enz became a lot more boring after Phil, Chunn & Crowther left.

    • @Sztermel
      @Sztermel 7 років тому +2

      Coldacre I think the second thoughts album was half of re-recordings instead.

      in the end they had to pay the rent & eat... They left the UK owing (Start Hire PA company, they used on tour) money, and reality bites. But yes, artistically this Enz is best Enz. Though some good stuff came after and the rest is history... repeatedly

    The framing left out the keyboard player.
    Here's a perfect example of how, for some reason, the drummer of every band always looks the most normal (but usually is the freakiest.)

    Said it before... time to rework some of the old tunes with the maturity of years and let them see the light of day, Time for a Kiwi tour , if it's good enough for Midnight Oil in 2022 its good enough to drag out these old tunes and polish them up. I'll be lining up for a ticket for sure, Climb over that old shit give Eddie and Mike C a call and put something together before it's lost forever. Kris
