      This was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1983. My brother was in the audience and said they blew the roof off that night.
      Mark Knopfler allowed Terry Williams to let it rip on the drums because it was the first time his father was seeing him play in concert. Knopfler responded with an extended guitar solo.

    The drummer is from Wales Terry Williams as was many of their road crew. The line up changed over the years. The only long-time original members were Mark Knopfler & John IIInsley the base guitarist. Hal Lindes a Californian was the rhythm player here. You have just watched here the best ever live performance from any band in history. Playing their long play jams. Better than their studio records. MK did all of the arranging of the music. It is hard to play a lead guitar & play like he does. You try it!! See how you do. No one cares about the vocal performance when in a studio they use many tricks to make it sound smoother. Having said all of that I can see you can appreciate this live performance. It is by far better than the studio version. Miles apart. Here you have a group of musicians all brilliant & at the very top of their game. Hard to top a performance such as this one. This was the last of 2 performances for the Love Over Gold tour which I saw. It was a natural high to witness this performance. I feel sorry for younger generation who did not see groups of the 60's 70's & 80's so much talent all competing for the top spot. MK is a self taught guitar, Virtuoso. A left-handed man playing a right-handed guitar using his fingers not a pick. I am glad he did not get guitar lessons. He is unique. xo So, glad to see you enjoy this 41 years ago now.

    Mark Knopfler was so fast and fluent on the guitar, in a friendly "cutting heads" exhibition during a concert, Eddie Van Halen smiled, bowed, and gave the stage to Mark. His "chickin pickin" finger style picking impressed the best. Chet Atkins (Mr. Guitar) gave him the master knod.

    Some people have said Mark's vocals are sometimes not as strong as maybe they could be, but the thing which makes him stand out (for me) is that he prefers to let the music do most of the talking and singing, so his vocals might sound a little 'understated' on occasion, but his genius can never be questioned. I agree that Knopfler performed even better in that live version, but what I missed in that one is the band dynamics. It was just average. In the Alchemy version the band dynamics was out of this world, tempo changes, the keyboardist kind of taking over one of Knopflers sequences in one of his solos, and Knopfler just let go of his guitar and just looked in awe as it happened. In the Wembly 85 performance, that magic was unfortunately kind of missing.

    I feel the absolute genius of this live extended version is EVERY riff and excursion on MK's guitar is based entirely on the chord structure, progression and melody of the song. He never departs to go off-piste in showing his finger picking range: he blows it out of the water constraining himself such that every solo phrase is a complex yet melodic echo of the song. It's why it has zero dissonance. And this live performance, every group member played out of his skin... including their new drummer playing to his parents in the crowd... the GOAT is Mark.

    This is a spectacular performance that seems to overwhelm everyone who watches and listens to it. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing in this is at a peak of excellence that very few guitarists could reach. He can obviously play very fast when he wants to, but it's not mindless speed like lesser guitarist might do. He plays in service to the song and with such beautiful tone, touch, melodic quality and creativity that combine to his signature style. The drummer, Terry Williams, is a live wire in this as well--fantastic drumming. As for the vocals, this is an extended live version of the song in which Mark is obviously being more playful and loose with his vocal delivery. I think it's fun, but the recorded version is clearly more tight and expressive in a different way.

    You’re probably right about the vocal sounding better on the studio version. Singing lead while playing such cool guitar fills is really difficult. There’s a reason most bands have a lead singer who plays rhythm guitar, bass, or nothing, and a lead guitarist who does all of the hard guitar parts. Knopfler is a special dude.

  • @jasonlouis697
    @jasonlouis697 Рік тому +3

    It's funny you talk about his voice, since his guitar is much more vocal in this version. Knopfler's guitar is so expressive, it's more like a second singer that he can then vocalize with/against. You really get that in Telegraph Road or Brothers in Arms, but it's very evident here. Really great reaction. Thank you both for the fun! Also, side note - I love watching the 2 guitarists dancing around while Knopfler is just playing and looking on with a smile.

    Musicians used to be Masters of their craft, able to play, improvise without any computer tech correctiing all their mistakes, without having to puzzle together a song from a thousand takes just to have a good version. Masterclass, one of the best performances I have ever heard, nothing today can match this anymore sadly, I would love to have something new that just blows my mind, but my mind stayed unblown for the last 20 years 😞

      Almost everything post 2000 just seems so bland or boring or just plain crap, and that includes rap, for which there is way too much of everywhere. Stuff like this with a full band of elite musicians... where are they? Probably buried under that huge pile of mediocrity that is the mainstream

      I'm Serbian 'import' since 1978 and I've listen to Dire Straits for over 40 yrs; now - also when MTV came along they featured Dire Straits all the time! Listening to them in Camaro V8 speeding through the desert was an experience I'll never forget! It was great being young during the 1980's!

    Clapping is legit. Been to such concerts. Oh yeah.....we all clap along. Any never forget that you hearing almost endless riff-breaks between the each line of the lyrics. If you play lead, you'll greatly appreciate the difficulty of singing/picking lead at the same time! (and finger picking to boot). You've seen one of, if not the, best life rock performances of all time, and I've been to many (73 year old Brooklyn NY garage band drummer from the 60s). The "machine gun" drumming you hear is performed by Tim for his father's enjoyment, as this was the first time his dad had seen him perform in front of a live audience (gotta show off to dad). I've play rock/blues drums since I was 13, but there ain't no way I could move like that and keep that stamina. Man is an animal. Great show. You two are excellent together (but one of you are much easier on the eyes :).

    Double no pick because the drummer is Terry Williams (ex Rockpile and Dave Edmonds). The Alchemy version was recorded live over one night. There are no overdubs at all. Mark even apologised on the Album Sleeve for some noise on some tracks. The album is full of some legendary DS performances. Telegraph Road, Tunnel of Love and the Opening track Once upon a time in the West. When you get round to it remember that to date Mark has made 9 solo albums as well as lots of Film scores. He has a new album out in 2024.

    Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist. Dire Straits have a pretty good catalog of songs, but Knopfler has gone on to record a lot of solo and collaborative stuff. In this song his guitar takes the unchallenged lead but in many of his other stull he's done he blends very well with other sounds in an almost subtle style - masterful.

    Great reactions. During the '70's, '80's and '90's I attempted to attend every conceivable genre of live music concerts (Rock, Jazz, Soul, R&B, Blues, Reggae). One thing that was a constant is musicians love experimenting with their established songs. It's a main reason why live versions are usually longer than the studio versions. My first experience with Dire Straits was during the film "An Officer and a Gentleman". Richard Gere was listening to "Tunnel of Love" on the jukebox. That interlude stuck with me, and I just had to know who performed it.
