That's the official explanation. But to me, it is Syd's voice talking about his descent into schizophrenia, where he is insulated from life by being "comfortably numb". The guitar solos and the heaviness of the music makes the subject way too important for such a simple event as in that official explanation.
@@stuBdoc feel free to believe what you like. he did experience a flashback to when he was sick as a kid but there's a larger context. the complete & accurate story is that during a tour date in Philly Roger got hepatitis & was treated by a shady venue doctor so he could perform that night. the song is a call-&-response between Roger as patient & the shady doc.

I knew you guys will enjoy it 🤘 Like the fact that you pay a lot of attention to the instrumental parts. You will see in your journey that in 70's rock (and early 80's) they often give an important place to each instruments. And as you like 9 minutes songs 😜 I would recommend Deep Purple - Child In Time - Live (1970)
As a guitar player there are many styles presented by great players very gifted in their particular style technically, but for me personally David Gilmour exhibits the same characteristic which the band has mastered, and that is to resist the tendency to display technical skill in favour of using the guitar to extract emotion from an audience by both a hypnotizing melody and immersing you in a soundscape of passion, and more than often with a highly intellectual social message to drive it all home to be branded on your memory.. I can't count the number of reactions to pink Floyd songs I've watched that brought the host(s) to tears, men, women, old, young.
Thanks guys for a great reaction. Keep in mind their concerts are in surround sound. Anything from this concert is awesome!! if you get a chance try "High Hopes", "Sorrow", Another Brick in the Wall" to name just a few. I have been listening to these guys for 50+ years. Note: These guys will change you because they have a way of touching your soul!!
Great reaction Phil and Sam! I understand completely your comments about space/time travel. As a young man, I spent hours just laying back and listening to Pink Floyd with headphones on and eyes closed. In addition to the music, they were known for outstanding shows when performing live.
Now that you've heard the "slow-shredding" of David Gilmour, I think you'll appreciate another fellow named Robin Trower doing his song called Bridge of Sighs, with his bass player James Dewar on vocals. Another slow-shred on guitar that is downright mesmerizing.
It isn't everyday you can tell this to someone, but: You've just watched what is considered by many to be the best guitar solo in rock History. Period.
To me the image of the epic triangular prism is an influx of energy from the left side & out the right side comes Pink Floyd's legendary music and performance in complete full color spectrum of the universe.
Actually, I believe at the time, the Rolling Stones ''Steel Wheels" Tour had the largest stage. When we built it in 89 at Shea Stadium in NY, it was 155 ft tall , filled the entire outfield and went into the bleachers on both sides. There were close to 100 tractor trailers of Production ( Lights, Sound,Scenery etc) There were 3 complete Steel Stages on the Tour, the one they would be playing on that week, one being built in the next city and one traveling to the venue 2 weeks away.!
They used 51 semis in order to 'leap-frog' across their North American Tour. For instance, if they were playing in Tampa, 17 semis were there with the staging and support items. At the same time, 17 semis were taking down the Miami concert venue, and, 17 semis were setting up the next concert location in Jacksonville, and so on. THE most incredible concert tour ever accomplished. Years later they put out the video and DVD set filmed from the end of their World Tour in London, called "Pulse". The North American concert was very similar. I had seen them in 1987 at Tampa Stadium, and suggested to my high school students that I was teaching in 1994, that they should see this concert. I went to the concert and was astonished that the '87 show could be made that much more amazing. Then, when teaching classes the following day, a few students came up to me and said, "Thanks a lot coach. We went to that Pink Floyd concert. You've ruined concert-going for us for the rest of our lives......because, we know right now that we will never see anything to top that."
saw Floyd in the 70's on the "Dark Side of the Moon" tour; it was fantastic....keep your headphones on, lie back in the dark, and play "Dark Side of the Moon"; you'll discover why that album was in the Billboard top 100 albums for well over 900 weeks
Great Gig in the Sky from the same Pulse concert should be next on your listening list. For Comfortably Numb, one of my favourite parts is the camera shot where Gilmour is backlit by the lights and is in shadow - a very powerful image for me.
I saw this show in New Orleans alone with 65 thousand others, this is the song, last tour for Pink Floyd but Gilmour still tours. Concert was over the people walked out numb but comfortably. There is many layers to this concert that would take a full page to tell. Enjoy the song as is, their won’t be another that will ever match it,,,,,,,,
Guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour also is known for discovering a very young Kate Bush and supporting her with recording professional demos which then helped her with getting signed to the EMI record label 🙂
You just described the master musician that David Gilmore is. There are a lot of guitar players that are very technically good but few can tell a story and take you on a journey with a solo like David can.🤩✌💛, PJ
In case you are wondering , this song takes place at a point of Pink ( Main character in the Wall ) has now completed his “ Wall “ . Now he faces his delusions all the while trying to escape the Wall he spent a lifetime building. The story climaxes in two songs Run like Hell then finally the Trial.
Any song from the Pulse concert is top tier. With Pink Floyd, nearly any live performance is as good, or better, than the studio version with very few exceptions. "Mother" and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" are the two exceptions that come to mind. If you want to see what David Gilmour can do when he wants to show off a bit, check out :Run Like Hell" from this same concert. It is the second encore behind this song and when you watch it you will understand why they chose it to follow what is probably one of the greatest performances in rock history. I really enjoyed the reaction and subscribed because of it, Rock on.
This is one of the many examples as to why David Gilmour is one of the GOAT guitarists. Another you should consider is Frank Marino and Mahagony Rush, I highly recommend "Something's Coming Our Way Live At Agora Theater". Outstanding performance ✌️ ☮️ 🎸🎶🇺🇸
lightning created Frank's journey, and when he claimed to have spoken to Jimmy Hendrix...then suddenly picks up up a guitar, and plays his music , there is more In; Heaven and Earth than we can dream of...
As a t667-year-old who has been a PF fan for quite a long time, for me this song is mainly about the acceptance that some dreams of one's youth will not be realized...but that is not necessarily problematic. In answer to another question....you have just begun a journey that will take you to places that you cannot yet imagine.
How is it possible that you've never heard Pink Floyd music? They are legendary. They don't just have good songs. They have a unique sound, especially Gilmour on guitar. There are plenty of amazing guitar players out there but nobody sounds like him.
Congrats in not interupting the solo. In some countries its jail time. The Floyd hole is very deep and each album should be listened from track 1 to the end.

This guitar solo is the best ever. May not be the fastest played. But the high notes David is known for and the emotion you get out of it is KRAZY!!!!. WITH A "K". it is unbelievable. PINK FLOYD greatest band in the world .love your reactions . What a magical moment.❤❤❤❤❤
You don't hear Pink Floyd, you feel Pink Floyd.
Absolutely right!!! 👍👍
Need another "timetravel" ? High Hopes GDansk version ;) Btw. take a seat, close your eyes, spread your wings and reach the sky = listening Pink Floyd :)
My suggestion for the next Pink Floyd song would be "Time" w lyrics. They are ridiculously good and you can't go wrong with any song of theirs.
Time might be one of their bests tracks (it's hard to do a classification).
Time is my all time favourite by pink Floyd
Ideally let it flow into Great Gig in the Sky (album version)
*Amen*
@@Dan-nj8du Well ideally just listen to the whole album straight.
My friend, Pink Floyd, Best band ever, dont miss them!!
A few suggestions for starters: 1) Dark Side Of The Moon (complete album in one go; songs merge, it´s a concept) 2) Echoes /Live in Pompeii 1971/72) 3) Shine On You Crazy Diamond (album version)
Waters bass on Echoes is bloody wicked.
Wish I’d been there but it was filled with ghosts.
Iconic gig and about 30 crew saw it!
"LEARNING TO FLY " from the same concert is a must see
I knew you guys will enjoy it 🤘 Like the fact that you pay a lot of attention to the instrumental parts.
You will see in your journey that in 70's rock (and early 80's) they often give an important place to each instruments. And as you like 9 minutes songs 😜 I would recommend Deep Purple - Child In Time - Live (1970)
Saw them in concert. Best concert ever.
Pink floyd - mother ,time, money, and LEARNING TO FLY..,the Machine tons of Awesome Songs.
Gilmour Gilmour Gilmour. Just a freaking beast.
I discovered Pink Floyd about four years back and haven’t listened to much else since then.
Welcome to Planet Pink Floyd
So glad y’all did this version. It’s an emotional trip!!
5:22… 100% correct. Pink Floyd is its own dimension… Magnificent Musical Master Piece!
Period.
Y'all will never comprehend the magnitude of that concert
To me the image of the epic triangular prism is an influx of energy from the left side & out the right side comes Pink Floyd's legendary music and performance in complete full color spectrum of the universe.
They had the biggest stage show ever. Had two full sized semis full of equipment...their stuff was always very atmospheric...
Now check out Run Like Hell from the same concert. It follows this song and is the finale, and you’ll see why.
saw Floyd in the 70's on the "Dark Side of the Moon" tour; it was fantastic....keep your headphones on, lie back in the dark, and play "Dark Side of the Moon"; you'll discover why that album was in the Billboard top 100 albums for well over 900 weeks
good to see the younger people can apreciate great music
Great Gig in the Sky from the same Pulse concert should be next on your listening list. For Comfortably Numb, one of my favourite parts is the camera shot where Gilmour is backlit by the lights and is in shadow - a very powerful image for me.
The studio version is a masterpiece. Clare Torrey's vocals were incredible. In concert it usually took three vocalists to do what Clare did solo.
Think that he managed and promoted her and also played the guitar on the now epic ' running up that hill ' .
The great live guitar solo of all time for me , it makes me emotional every time I hear it 😮
You just described the master musician that David Gilmore is. There are a lot of guitar players that are very technically good but few can tell a story and take you on a journey with a solo like David can.🤩✌💛, PJ
I got to see Pink Floyd live in the late 80s, best concert I've ever seen, legends.....
If your feeling like your traveling through space , your getting Pink Floyd . Great Band !!
I want the scene at 10:40 as a poster. It is an iconic image of David Gilmour. Actually, and of the silhouettes of him after that point.
Greatest guitar player in the world is like saying the most beautiful woman in the world...eyes and ears are in the beholder...but one of best ever.
Arguably the greatest guitar solo ever!
I first saw them in 1972, and seen them many times since, this was a great concert , I felt privileged to be there.
As a t667-year-old who has been a PF fan for quite a long time, for me this song is mainly about the acceptance that some dreams of one's youth will not be realized...but that is not necessarily problematic. In answer to another question....you have just begun a journey that will take you to places that you cannot yet imagine.
Goodness me you've aged amazingly well😮😂
Saw this tour in FLA. Brings tears EVERYTIME I see/hear it.
A masterpiece that stands the test of time. David Gilmore is to me ....a virtuoso, of the stratocaster.
Agreed this song a high school favorite in late 70's is one of the greatest solos ever !
Great channel, love your content and reactions
Thanks Jeff!
How is it possible that you've never heard Pink Floyd music? They are legendary. They don't just have good songs. They have a unique sound, especially Gilmour on guitar. There are plenty of amazing guitar players out there but nobody sounds like him.
Gilmour put more soul into that second solo than most players can muster in a lifetime. He is truly a ( guitar) God walking among mere men.
Mr. Gilmour on the guitar. Just a fantastic player with such great feel in his playing.
Congrats in not interupting the solo. In some countries its jail time. The Floyd hole is very deep and each album should be listened from track 1 to the end.
Pink Floyd. They represent an amazing journey to go on from the early years with Sid Barret up to what you have just seen.
Every guitar wants David Gilmore for Christmas.
My wife and I were there...remember this was 30 years ago...still the best concert of our lives
I Was at this concert at Earl's Court in London. The greatest band. Period. This song is nearly 50 years old. Amazing event that will never be repeated.
