Terry Williams, the drummer, was just amazing in this. This is one of the greatest live rock and roll performances ever. Someone mentioned that Terry's father was in the crowd, and this was the first time he saw his son perform in concert. Terry was known for hitting the drums really hard. He is retired now, in his mid-seventies.

Being a working guitarist in the 70's was absolutely incredible with the likes of Hendrix, Santana, Clapton, Page, Beck, Iommi, Gilmour, Lifeson, Townsend, Young, Howe, Blackmore, Walsh, May, Van Halen and Knopfler to listen to although I didn't understand just how lucky I was until decades later when we slowly went back to formulaic "pop". Today marks 2 months since my dad passed away at age 78. Dire straits was his favorite group hands down. This song has popped up in my YT feed a lot yesterday and today which is crazy!!! Anyway, I’ve heard this song plenty of times, and it’s nice to see and hear someone react to it for the first time and see them in disbelief. Mark knopfler guitar playing is so good and has such a distinct sound. I truly enjoyed your reaction. Thanks for giving me a fond memory of my dad
Thx Aileen for giving props to the rhythm section. They are so groovy and absolut solid. Without them, there wouldn't be the foundation for the guitars and vocals to shine.

This is without doubt the greatest guitar solo ever played. And finger plucked by the insanely talented Mark Knopfler…..I’m reliably told by those who have tried to recreate it, it’s literally impossible!
Great reaction! Dire Straits are amazing. Mark Knopfler is a master player and master story teller too. Love his distinctive sound. You only need to hear a few notes to know you are listening to him play. You have many more legendary songs to discover from this band.
I bought this album when it came out and have been a Dire Straits fan for decades, but this particular live performance just takes it to a whole new level.
Thanks! I was a teenager and had my first girlfriend when this song came out. The love for the girl didn't last, but the love for this song will last forever! 😊
Sultans of Swing has been one of my favorites for as long as I can remember. This live version is superb due to the tasteful and elegant improve from the band members.

Aileen, the reason Mark Knopfler's voice is so rich is that he was raised the North East of England, my neck of the woods. He is telling a story of when he nipped into a pub in London on a rainy day and caught a band playing. The have been immortalized as the Sultans of Swing. If you liked that you will love "Money for Nothing." Keep the reactions coming. Love them.
Wish I could remember which documentary had him and Brian Johnson wandering round their childhood haunts, at Spanish City by the Tunnel Of Love inscriptions pointing at the places they used to play.
@@spads1971 That's just either Mark or Brian's channel.. ... You're right though... just two old pals walking around their home town chatting about old times.
What a delightful and enjoyable reaction. And damn, that drumming! Wow. I remember when I first heard this on the radio and Junior High and I raced down to the record store and bought the single. You really owe it to yourself to listen to the studio track as well. You will love everything about the arrangement and the clarity in the recording and it still communicates all that energy, even for a studio recording. When you were commenting at the end about how you're really starting to like classic rock, so many things pop into mind but for some reason, I just have a feeling you would really enjoy Ten Years After, from the late 60s into the early to mid 70s. If you haven't already done their massive massive hit, I'd Love To Change the World, I would certainly do that, but they have so much good stuff. They were British and played at Woodstock as well. Alvin Lee is the front man on the Gibson guitar but all four members of that band were just incredibly talented, most of them had Jazz backgrounds. I've Been There Too, this is a powerfully emotional song with an important message but it also turns into quite the jam, like so many of their songs. Once There Was a Time starts off so slow and simple and the lyrics are absolutely hilarious and it just turns into absolute chaos of a focused intensity and structure and it's just so fun. Both of these are off of the same album, A Space in Time, which had that hit I'd Love To Change the World. But that whole album became so immensely popular. And there are lots of transitions between songs on the record that are so creative and so amazing.
Dire Straits have always been my favourite band. This song is my ultimate favourite, you should show the other songs as well. Thank you for showing it. ❤
As an old codger who was around when this was first released, I approve this reaction. I just wish I could experience listening to it for the first time again.
Good evening from London. I have just come across your reaction to this amazing live version of this incredible song, and I would like to thank you. Thank you for giving me the feeling of watching this video for the first time. Your expressions, your face and the emotions that you displayed during this song was incredible, it really did give me that first time experience again and I am in your debt for your ability to make that happen. Thank you for sharing, have a lovely weekend.
I've loved this song for years but can't stop watching reactions to it - seeing people loving the little fills and mini solo but likely not knowing what's coming... Love it, tune never fails to give me chills 😁
This is a timely reaction video of a fantastic Dire Straits live performance because it's included in the recently released Dire Straits 64-track live compilation, which is a mixture of their live albums plus some previously unreleased live material. Definitely a good stocking filler to introduce the band to a newcomer.
One of the most beautiful reaction videos I've ever seen, it's clear that you really enjoyed yourself, and so did I. I love Dire Straits. Thank you. Sorry for my bad English.
Never heard of this artist/this song before! Makes me that excited to watch along since you, me, and anyone else is gonna be in the same boat! I have a good feeling this is going to be a super fun reaction to watch after work 😭❤️
GREAT REACTION and GOOD NEWS! From this same Alchemy Concert in London comes the encore "TELEGRAPH ROAD" and that was ,also, amazing with the keys being more present:) ENJOY!
The best description I have heard about this performance is FLAWLESS! And I agree I had the pleasure of seeing this band live in 1985! Once again, great job on your review and the memories you bring back for me. With your excitement! Thank you!
Telegraph Road also from Alchemy Live is worth checking out... that said they did a lot of good stuff. One of the reasons this is recommended over the studio version is of course the live aspect, but also it developed over the years. This was their first hit, and when the band started it was a 2 guitar, 1 bass and drums... and the song was brilliant, but as the band progressed they added more instruments. If you check out "On Every Street" (which was from their last album) from the "Into the Night" concert you will see a stage just packed with all sorts of different instruments.
I truly adore your reaction videos. It doesn't hurt that you have a beauty that has stolen my soul. Back to reality, this was my favorite first song when it came out.
Aileen, thank you so much for your reaction to this masterpiece. This live version is arguably one of the best live performances ever. Everything you say is true, and Mark Knopfler's extended guitar solo -- while one of the best IMO -- strangely enough is largely overlooked when excellent guitar solos are cited. I greatly enjoyed your comments, as always. Why don't you start exploring Dire Straits' rabbit hole a little more? Love from Germany
Prince was once asked, "what does it feel like to be the worlds greatest guitarist?" He replied: "Go ask Mark Knopfler" That right there speaks volumes of how revered Mark is amongst his peers. Great reaction.
On stage that night: Mark Knopfler (Lead Guitar) John Illsley (Bass) Hal Lindes (Rhythm Guitar) Terry Williams (Drums) Alan Clark (Keyboards) Guy Fletcher (Keyboards/ Percussion)
Mark Knopfler is a musical genius in my opinion. Sultans of Swing is such great song, and this performance is legendary. Thank you so much for the reaction Aileen, you always bring joy and good analysis of whatever the content you react to. Genuine! Thanks.
Aileen, Beautiful reaction 😊 You have tapped into a treasure in Dire Straits😊 All the recommendations are great and I look forward to hearing and seeing your reactions 😊
My dear, I can't believe you never heard this song before. It's one of the most played songs on the radio. I'm happy you loved Terry Williams on the drums. One of the best drummers in the world, and yet very underrated. This was the first time his father went to see Terry playing, so he gave it all. Although all songs are good, Telegraph Road, Private Investigations and Tunnel of Love are a must. Telegraph Road is a whirlwind of emotions, and you won't regret listening to it. It's pure magic.
Dire Straits is a great rabbit hole to jump into. The song writing and guitar work of Mark Knopfler is very unique and non traditional, and with his vocals it gives the band its own unique sound. Their music is versatile yet very easy to listen to and all have great stories to tell. Great reaction Aileen, hope you have a fantastic week. 😊
Aren't you looking all sunshine and lollipops - as ever? Looking good as always. Geat reaction. For a visual & musical treat, you owe it to yourself to watch their Live version of Telegraph Road and / or Tunnel Of Love from the same gig.
When was the last time you listened to a rock song with a solo that lasts half the song, and the guitar tone is that pure and clean. Mark Knopfler, the absolute man.
Another couple of Dire Straits classics to react to (when you get the time...) are 'Money For Nothing' 'Romeo & Juliet' and 'Brothers In Arms'. The last track is a complete departure and highly emotional, so be prepared... Great reaction as always Aileen, thanks 🙋♂
A beautiful rock and roll smile is worth more than a thousand sunsets. You have to know they did it for people like you who can appreciate it. Wake me up from a coma I'll dig some impressive drums and love of music.
As a fan for 40 years or more, it’s a joy to see someone else discover and appreciate their brilliance. I’d recommend “Telegraph Road” from the same concert as a good next step. There are lots of steps to come though. It’s surprising that as one of the biggest bands of the 1980’s worldwide, they sometimes feel all but forgotten these days.
Great reaction Mark is absolutely legendary the world over. Brilliant vocalist and guitarist. I have to admit one of my favourite songs of his is purely instrumental. 'Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero.' I remember playing that song as part of an jazz rock ensemble at school. Always stuck in my memory.
If you haven't done it already, I think you'd love the Frog Leap Studios cover of Sultans of Swing. I grew up with the original from Dire Straits and I still love it, but the Frog Leap cover is my new favorite. Adds some serious metal to the song and it just SLAMS!! So glad you liked this one.
Love this song and this live version even more. I have watched a few people review this video and your reactions to it were great and certainly genuine, nice work!
There has never been another song like Sultans, even by Dire Straits. I only recently discovered this version, mainly because the original is so good I didn’t think they could replicate the same vibe on stage. Instead they revved it up and because it seems it was the last number they obviously wanted to give the crowd something to remember. The whole band is as tight as a drum, which segues nicely to the performance of the drummer. He must have lost several pounds in that number alone. Probably twice the length of the original but worth every extra second. Entrancing reaction as always Aileen.
Hi 👋 Aileen thanks again for another fantastic reaction my friend 😀 if liked this song you might like money for nothing, the walk of life, romeo and juliet, brothers in arms 😊
I’ve only just found your channel now, I think the algorithm probably recommended this to because of the song choice. But DAMN you clearly appreciate music, instantly subbing 😊 the fact you didn’t break your smile once in the whole song says you’re my kind of people 😊 much love ❤️
The lyrics were inspired by a performance of a Dixieland jazz band playing in the corner of an almost empty pub in Deptford, South London. Kool song never get older 👍
This was fun to watch your reaction Aileen. Your smiles and dancing in your chair showed you really enjoyed it as well. This is a great song. One of the most iconic guitar solos of all time. Mark Knopfler is amazing. Thanks for the fun reaction.
Mark Knopfler, Eddie Van Halen and Steve Lukather of Toto are in my opinion the best rock guitarists that busted out in the late 70s...you can't confuse Mark Knopfler's tone and style with anyone else, it is quite unique. I was in high school when this came out and it was during the disco domination of the charts, and it was a bright light at the end of the rock and roll tunnel that things were about to change...🔥🔥🔥👍
Dire Straits have been the soundtrack to my life. The greatest thing about this performance is just what a blast they are all having just playing a great song in front of a appreciative audience.
Great reaction, loved it! My DS favourites are: “Expresso Love”, “Tunnel of Love”, “Once Upon A Time In The West”, “Where Do You Think Your Going”, “Wild West End”, “Your Latest Trick”. Give these a listen, you won’t regret them👍🏻🎧🎶🎸

Brothers in arms (whole song or live versions, not the official video that is cut short), Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road, Your Latest Trick, So Far Away...
hi Aileen, yes, so groovy and bouncy, and to see how much fun they had, playing it, and teasing the crowds with slowing down and speeding up again... I also love-love-love it! Mark Knoepfler, the singer, composer and band leader has had an amazing carrier (still going), and this song was from their debut album in 1978. He is one of those guitar players, that once you know him, you can hear within the first few seconds of a song, even before his voice comes in, that its him - absolutely unique! And it was also so much fun, to watch the fun you've had with their fun!!! 💖😎
Cheers from Sweden. Wish I could remember which documentary had him and Brian Johnson wandering round their childhood haunts, at Spanish City by the Tunnel Of Love inscriptions pointing at the places they used to play.

An absolute master at his craft who also just loves what he is doing!!!
I've loved this song for years but can't stop watching reactions to it - seeing people loving the little fills and mini solo but likely not knowing what's coming... Love it, tune never fails to give me chills 😁
Yip, live at Hammersmith Odeon, , brilliant, played to death..😁
From this same Alchemy Concert in London comes the encore "TELEGRAPH ROAD" and that was ,also, amazing with the keys being more present:)
ENJOY!
The best description I have heard about this performance is FLAWLESS!
And I agree
I had the pleasure of seeing this band live in 1985!
Back to reality, this was my favorite first song when it came out.
might I suggest "Take me to the Pilot" by Elton John?
Aileen, thank you so much for your reaction to this masterpiece. This live version is arguably one of the best live performances ever. Everything you say is true, and Mark Knopfler's extended guitar solo -- while one of the best IMO -- strangely enough is largely overlooked when excellent guitar solos are cited. I greatly enjoyed your comments, as always. Why don't you start exploring Dire Straits' rabbit hole a little more?
Love from Germany
Agreed100 ❤
Yes, Terry gave those drums the beating of their life!
That’s a real guitarist.
Great Reaction you have a great smile stay Happy and Healthy . When I saw them , I so loved their Solo
Prince was once asked, "what does it feel like to be the worlds greatest guitarist?" He replied: "Go ask Mark Knopfler"
That right there speaks volumes of how revered Mark is amongst his peers.
Great reaction.
On stage that night:
Mark Knopfler (Lead Guitar)
John Illsley (Bass)
Hal Lindes (Rhythm Guitar)
Terry Williams (Drums)
Alan Clark (Keyboards)
Guy Fletcher (Keyboards/ Percussion)
Mark Knopfler is a musical genius in my opinion. Sultans of Swing is such great song, and this performance is legendary. Thank you so much for the reaction Aileen, you always bring joy and good analysis of whatever the content you react to. Genuine! Thanks.
This is a masterpiece 🔥🔥👍
Terry was definitely the highlight of this performance!
This is pure performance. No frills, no back up singers, no flashing lights, just the band and the audience. Welcome to my world of music.
Terry is really bashing those drums like they owe money to him. 😂😊
And also it was fun to see you smiling so wide, just feeling the music.
My favorite live video on UA-cam! So happy you did this version
Nooooooo 😊😢😊😊 Legacy 🔒 🔒 😊😅🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤😊😊🎉🎉
A great song transcends genres, and this is truly a great song.
Love this song and this live version even more. I have watched a few people review this video and your reactions to it were great and certainly genuine, nice work!
Dire straits is a super underrated band, an incredibly talented group
There has never been another song like Sultans, even by Dire Straits. I only recently discovered this version, mainly because the original is so good I didn’t think they could replicate the same vibe on stage. Instead they revved it up and because it seems it was the last number they obviously wanted to give the crowd something to remember. The whole band is as tight as a drum, which segues nicely to the performance of the drummer. He must have lost several pounds in that number alone. Probably twice the length of the original but worth every extra second. Entrancing reaction as always Aileen.
marks guitar playing is Sur-real. Beautiful !
Mark Knoeffler is criminally underrated and so is Terry. Damn. Incredible performance. All finger plucking eat your heart out Tim Henson. Lol
Saw Dire Straits many times and several times on the Alchemy tour. Always brilliant and something about it just produces lots of endorphins!
Please do Telegraph Road from the same concert. You won't regret it. ❤
Love your reaction to one of my alltime favourite songs from one of my alltime favourite bands !
Hi 👋 Aileen thanks again for another fantastic reaction my friend 😀 if liked this song you might like money for nothing, the walk of life, romeo and juliet, brothers in arms 😊
One of a kind guitar, literally, bluesy almost Dylanesque vocals and a beat that walks like water flows.
Mark kicks ass. But the drummer is the real bad ass. Amazing!
Tell me ?
You sound like you from USA, correct me if I wrong😉
Your reaction is brilliant, and unsurprising. Thank you
The really impressive part of this song is the fact that Maek Knopfler (the lead guitarist/ lead singer) never uses a pick and he still shreds
Give these a listen, you won’t regret them👍🏻🎧🎶🎸
It's almost like watching it for the first time again to see your reaction. I must have been about 16 when this came out, but great to witness someone responding as if it happened yesterday - great idea.
Romeo and Juliet!
Brothers in arms (whole song or live versions, not the official video that is cut short), Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road, Your Latest Trick, So Far Away...
Mark Knopfler is a God.
hi Aileen, yes, so groovy and bouncy, and to see how much fun they had, playing it, and teasing the crowds with slowing down and speeding up again...
Nice reaction these really are the sultans of swing. i remember back in the late 80's actually learning the dance moves and rhytm by standing on my fathers feets as he moved around listening to these and this song. That memory is both vivid and unforgettable. Love Dire Straits for being part of my life and gave me rythm.
Saw Dire Straits twice live. What I always loved, they simply couldn't stop 🙂Anyway, my album is now grey and crackled, played Sultans of Swing sooo many times, but the live rendition blows it out of the water. Thanks for bringing this one up and the lovely reaction Aileen!
This terrific tune, blowed my mind back in 1979, very first time I listened to it. And yes indeed, my girl, drums and bass always go together, just like cloudless night and brighter stars. Good to see a bass behind you. Keep on rock`n, for ever!!.
