@@theautisticartist9370 With some help of my bro I made a rogue aaracockra. Her backstory was that as a baby she was dumped by her parents and raised by bats, until a forest witch adopted her and called her Batty. The forest witch did terrible magic experiments on her. So one day Batty murdered the witch's apprentice and sealed the witch inside a magic locket. But the witch could influence Batty through the locket because she's a witch, so Batty is compelled to wear the locket at all times and also sometimes is very crazy. Was much fun to play xD
So glad I found this. Trying to get my stepsister into D&D after she watched Stranger Things. Working on Characters for her My Dad and my Stepmum as a Christmas gift. Used to play ages ago, but haven't seen my party in 3 years. First time DMing.
This is an excellent video to introduce the basic concepts in character creation. Although I’ve created a number of D&D5E characters it was still fun to watch. I can see how useful this would be to beginners.
Wow, no one makes basic videos for beginners anymore, so it's very cool to see something like this for new players. I also think with the fairly recent release of the essentials kit, there will be a whole new generation of new players coming to this for the first time. Also, I think George Castanza would probably be a Dwarven wizard. I don't know why, but that's what I would do.
I thought George would probably be a Gnome Warlock, myself. I doubt he'd put in the work to be a Wizard. And a patron who just talks and talks about nothing at all would work. Partner him with a Half Elf Bard comedian, a terrible Elven Cleric, and a tall Human Fighter and you have yourself a party.
Thank you for this video. It's been more than 30 years since I've played D&D. I recently bought a starter kit to play with my sons, and these videos are a great help in getting me back up to speed
Like someone said before me. I know character creation like the back of my hand but still love watching videos like these. I especially love supporting Nate and WASD20
Using names straight from the rules PDF, I have created my first character: Xanaphia "Xin" Galanodel, a rogue pickpocket Wood Elf. This video was a TON of help, as I've never done anything with D&D in my life, and I had no clue what I was doing! :D
most dnd players: rouges are one of the more complicated classes, not recommended for beginners. every book on dnd ever: here are some common races that everyone plays and there's a lot of information on how to play them in the game. Me. Who has never played dnd before, has only listened to a couple podcasts and watched a couple videos: but... what if... I picked an obscure race with no information and made them a rouge? everyone with a brain: what if you didn't? me: :)
Thanks for the video. I am starting out as a DM for my kids and their friend after a 20+ year hiatus from DND and now I have a better grasp on character creation.
Oh my God hero forge is so awesome! I have always wanted something like this, and now I finally have it. I literally paused this video as soon as he told us about it to try it out! Rest of the video was good too, I guess.
Hey there kids, when he gets to the calculating ability modifiers part, he made it more complicated then it has to be. There is literally a guide in the player's handbook, on page 13 top right-hand corner that tells you what your ability modifiers will be from your ability scores. He was still right, but there's enough math in D&D as it is, no need to add more.
10 is 0 every even up, you slap +1 on your modifier every odd down, you slap -1 on your modifier so a 7 is two odds down. 9, 7. so -2. a 14 is two evens up. 12, 14. so +2. then logic it out
@@Sovann_the_Mighty yes. There’s also a number that’s the average for that roll you can it instead. Example. For a sorcerer your hit dice is a d6 and you start lvl 1 with 6 plus your constitution modifier. Every level above that you can either roll a d6 and add constitution modifier or you can just take 4 plus constitution modifier. Each class is different so read your class
As someone preparing to jump into DMing their first D&D session, I just wanted to thank you for these videos! I really enjoyed them - and I think you explain everything really concisely. You are charismatic but not over the top - which is perfect. Even your adverts are watchable and seem genuine. Please keep putting out videos and thank you again - very good stuff.
I am my groups DM and I thank you so much, because this is me and my friends first campaign and we were worried about doing things wrong but this helped a ton!
I have been watching your whole series explaining the functions of D&D. I was once part of a very short campaign my dad hosted with my sibling and I. only we never got to make our own character and we basically player our in real life selves which killed the fun a lot. there for it also didn't last long since dad was hard on us and made it too difficult for beginning players. I will say we lacked team work and having players with difficulty understanding basics didn't help much either. The campaign was stopped the moment my brother (the bard) and I ( the rogue) were finally having fun. we were meme-ing to much and it frustrated my dad and made him legit rage quit as DM. It was a horrible first D&D experience yet despite my first ever play through being complete ass I still wanted a second roll at the game. Seeing so many cosplayers and Larp action on video's as well as the creative fun people seemed to have with it really just wanted me to play it even more. For 3 years I couldn't find a campaign to join I could only find players willing to play the game. No DM had free time or would simply ghost us. So legit start this week as to when I write this after 3 years since my first and last session.... I decided I would become the DM. I have made worlds before for art and animations. I have 183 character in my excel listed and each year 5 more join or so. I have 13+ original universes and I hosted a lot of Werewolves back in the days as a kid (the 999 game version werewolven van wakkerdam).... I just have to give this a shot. And I was clue less the moment I picked up the first book man xD hahahahah. SO much info and I'm dyslexic to my core man reading the PHB would take me years. I'm so glad a lot of D&D players make tips and tricks video's on how to start. I gotta say yours help the most. I am still collecting a lot of data for the first session with my 4 players. If all goes well I will post a reply here on how it went and if the group wants to continue. I'm giving my party the freedom to make a character of any race (even own builds or ones found on good written forums) 1, cuz i'm broke and can't afford more books. 2. I don't wanna limit my players to much. The classes will be from the PHB. I wished my dad gave us that freedom so I will hand that freedom to my players. I will probably start easy even in the mechanics and try to build it up as we go. The first play session probably will be a small dungeon. This can help testing the mechanics so we all can get comfortable with it. If we continue I will up the game as we grow as group. I really wanna thank you for these video's / series! I have been taking notes and even made noted for in my D&D book so I can always keep these close. I'm also not native English so these more depth explanations really helped. Honestly can't say it enough thank you! to other people i'm always open to your personal tips or tricks! shower me with help and hopefully I can make use of that. the more info i get the more i can do. for now wish me luck!!!
Finally, the logical step by step fill it out manual follow along video I was looking for, felt like such a loser depending on D&D beyond to do it for me. thanks
This is FANTASTIC and explains so much. Especially if you've been listening to DND podcasts and have a bit of knowledge how the game play works. There's a lot of details about how to do this that the PHB isn't easy to decipher. Thank you!
Try to design a character from the handbook in the midst of some very experienced players and it was extremely stressful. This video makes it very simple and easy. Great vid
Great re-intro for me, for the latest edition. I haven't played since early 3e years. In my investigations, I'm glad to see some things are simplified.
This video is incredibly helpful and well structured, - has helped me lots! Even with the book in front of me it was all just a bit overwhelming really, but this helped so so much, thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I've always been interested in D&D, but never pursued getting into it. Recently my son expressed interest in the game, but I wasn't quite sure on the character building and the math involved. This cleared it up for me perfectly. You have a new subscriber.
Since I don't have time to go get the books (payday is next week and the first session I've been a part of in well over a decade is this weekend) I saw this and thought "since I watch everything at double speed, character creation in 15 minutes?! Hell yes!" Thank you so much. It's been forever since I've played D&D, and when I did play, I just borrowed my cousins books to create my characters. Lol
I'm creating my very first D&D character, and trying to figure it all out on my own was rather stressful, but after watching this video and learning that it's really not as hard as it look it became a lot easier.
I've never played D&D before but I'm going to begin playing along with a friend of mine and some of her friends. I chose a race that doesn't actually exist but someone has manage to make stats and equipment, spells, etc for this race. Said race being the Vessels from Hollow Knight. This is going to be my ever first time playing D&D and I am really looking doward to it.
I followed your guide for filling out my sheet, and when I sent it to my DM he said it was the most well organized character sheet he'd ever seen 😂so I guess you have his approval haha.
Researching to start dnd at the request of my 10 year old daughter who has started playing at a school club so I didn’t want to let her down, finding your videos very helpful thank you. 🙏
Just remember that D&D is NOT a rules light game. It is many MANY rules. It only feels like rules light to the player because the game passes all the rules to the DM to figure out. The best way to start is simply to learn the basics and then read up on the rules after each session. If you don't know what the rules are during a session, just make something up that sounds fitting and look it up later. Do not spend time during the game to figure it out.
Oh Boy, this brings back memories from 35 years ago. We would spend more time creating characters than playing them. DM was brutal (as teen boys usually are). Lots of early deaths. Thanks for the refresher course. Keep putting out the great content. Cheers
Hero forge is one of the only 2 youtuber sponsors I’ll swear by, the other being honey. Now this is from the POV of someone with a 3D printer, idk how their shipped minis are, but the ones I’ve printed are great
Thank you so much for this- I’m currently sick and self quarantined, and have had nothing to do. I’ve spent the last four hours in my room under a blanket making a character (a tiefling bard!!) and it’s been fun. I played earlier this year with some friends, but had a lot of help making my character and wasn’t sure where to start now on my own. Great video!! Super helpful!!
SUPER HELPFUL!!! thank you I am DMing a new campaign for some friends who have never played and this was really good to get them a bit more familiar with the stuff we did at session 0
Thank you for making this video, I come back to it a lot; you're not repetitive or redundant and you don't patronize beginner players! My memory is shot and making a new character is the hardest part of D&D for me. It's all butter afterwards.
That equation for working out the Ability Score Modifiers is SO HELPFUL! I didn't realise. I had to keep looking them up! I feel like a total goober not seeing that. Thank you!
Thank you for the informative video. My wife and I are planning to buy the dnd starter kit to try out the game. I hope we love it, we are both very excited to try
Thank you!!! This was a wonderful video! I'm kind of new to DnD, but I'm really aiming to become a dungeon master once I get more comfortable with the game; to that effect, our DM is giving those of us who want to learn lessons in DMing, and our first lesson is building a character sheet from the ground up, no apps or auto-fill. That way we can help our players build THEIR characters when introducing new people to the game! I'm excited to go to my next lesson with a solid understanding of all these numbers and concepts. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I have starter/essential d&d kit and watched your school of rules, its amazing how you explained all this, i was confused about character creation, think its maybe not best explained in these small rule books, but you describe it perfectly, now its much clearer where goes what, and sheet doesnt look so scary now..thank you for amazing videos, and for helping many of us get in this magic world...subscribed as I want to see rest of your videos...
I'm gonna comment again for the algorithm. I'm starting a campaign with all brand new players and I make them watch these and it really helps. Great video.
This is so helpful! I have never played D&D but have always wanted to! I want to try playing with some friends on Discord since everyone's social distancing right now, this has been such a huge help!
I was lookijg for players inwant to dm an open campaogn this yr via zoom or dip Its gonna be a 17 to 37 blitz 40 day or 200 hrs whatever comes first.. U interested.. Probabyy starting summer and no commitemnnt I need 7 ppl
Thank you, that was incredibly helpful as I was building my very first character. Reading the player's handbook was good to find out who I'd be and what I'd have but you filled in the blanks (literally).
Managed to convice my friend to play it with me, only problem is we're all clueless, so as the one that invited them, I'll be the DM and I'm learning the game so that I can teach them. Creating a character along with you was so helpful, and now I feel like I can help them do the same.
Never played D&D but always wanted to people thought I was weird for it but I met some friends that played it and we’re gonna start a campaign soon and this was so helpful thanks so much!
LIFESAVER, DUDE Thank you!! I came over from Pathfinder and was totlly lost on how to fill this sheet out. Playing over Discord, they can't really walk you through it, so this has been invaluable
Tomorrow night will be my 4th time ever playing DnD, and I kinda jumped in mid-campaigne. the DM kinda sped me through a character build based off what I was interested in for a first character. When I pulled out a paper character sheet, most of the other players were surprised to see such an ancient thing, and I've never really been given a good walkthrough on filling one out. I happen to be a Drow Rogue, so this really helped me understand what is going on so I don't need to lean on the other players or DM as much. Awesome videos man!
There were always some spaces on the character sheet that I never understood. Thank you for this. Now I know what they are for and how to calculate their number and even use them in general.
I spent two hours last night with the Essential Kit trying to figure this out and the Skills bit just stumped me. Read through to the end of the section and I hadn't filled them out (I am completely new to this). This video sorted it out - thanks! One update I'd make to the video, is to give a little more detail on the proficiency bonus, I had to look it up after watching to see where it came from.
Thanks so much! I've been playing DND for about a year now, with me deciding to DM a few weeks after I first played. But I didn't fully know how to create characters sheets for my NPCs, but this video really helped me with that! Thank you so much!
I've been playing for a couple years and this is a great explanation. I will be able to show this to new players with confidence if after I explained it they still don't understanding! Thank you for this awesome video!
For someone who never played d&d but is looking to start this video is a life saver. Finally got my first character done; Eltarion Vorienti the Half-elf Rogue spy. Can't wait to get to use him in my first game. Thank you :D
Rogues are awesome, but sadly people seem to think they are all criminals for some reason. I see them more as an expert class. So I made me a Half-Elf Scout Rogue and Gloom Stalker Ranger multiclass, that also had shit stats because I rolled really bad. Turned out it was the best character I have ever made. With +11 in Stealth, Zephyr Strike (advantage at will) and Pass Without Trace (+10 to any stealth bonus) it turned out it is REALLY hard to spot him as he at minimum get 22 and at maximum 43 in stealth.
Dude I can’t even lie I’ve watched so many Damn videos on how to play this game and none of them made sense. You clarified it and I understood everything thanks so much! I’m no longer scared to learn it 😂
I am newly getting into this game and your video cleared up a couple things I was confused about while filling out the sheet. I can now make the corrections to my character and finish filling out their information accurately.

Great brother
So glad I found this. Trying to get my stepsister into D&D after she watched Stranger Things. Working on Characters for her My Dad and my Stepmum as a Christmas gift. Used to play ages ago, but haven't seen my party in 3 years. First time DMing.
Gonna DM for my friends and we're all first timers.. Wish me luck XD
@j they went too deep. he hasnt came back yet
Ok, it's been 6 months. Are you still playing. Tell me how it went.
How’d it go?
How did it go, mate?
@@mycrofthirschecke5271 it’s been 8 months they’re still arguing about how spell slots work
This is an excellent video to introduce the basic concepts in character creation. Although I’ve created a number of D&D5E characters it was still fun to watch. I can see how useful this would be to beginners.
Thanks Andy!
Yeah, I have enough characters to make a small army.

Players who asks the DM for an entirely home brewed Character:
*Reality can be whatever I want.*
My mom is making a fully homebrew character for our first campaign
Awesome !! Enjoy! :)
Like someone said before me. I know character creation like the back of my hand but still love watching videos like these. I especially love supporting Nate and WASD20
My friend told me I could play if I learned, I’m trying my best
Have you considered sitting in as a spectator? It may give you a feel for how it works. (That's how I learned the basics of chess.) 🙂
Same lol
Watch online.. it takes time ... learning curve is longer than many games...
Your friend needs to help u or i would play with others ...lol
Wat if ur whole group is new to the game
Using names straight from the rules PDF, I have created my first character: Xanaphia "Xin" Galanodel, a rogue pickpocket Wood Elf. This video was a TON of help, as I've never done anything with D&D in my life, and I had no clue what I was doing! :D
Omg! When I very first started I made a rogue elf named Xanaphia too
Oh man! Can’t wait to play George Constanza in dnd!
most dnd players: rouges are one of the more complicated classes, not recommended for beginners.
every book on dnd ever: here are some common races that everyone plays and there's a lot of information on how to play them in the game.
Me. Who has never played dnd before, has only listened to a couple podcasts and watched a couple videos: but... what if... I picked an obscure race with no information and made them a rouge?
everyone with a brain: what if you didn't?
me: :)
Let's start with spelling Rogue correctly.
lol, I’m making a Gorgon assassin, don’t even know if that’s a race in allowed to have, but I’m only playing with my friends so it should be fine XD
Once I made a drider rogue that ate tomatoes, specifically.
Nvm I just got the sheet she was a drider bard
Are demons a race in dnd?
Thanks for the video. I am starting out as a DM for my kids and their friend after a 20+ year hiatus from DND and now I have a better grasp on character creation.
Isn’t short bow a simple weapon?
Ooh! Good catch. Thanks for pointing that out.
Haha, who's the expert?
Oh my God hero forge is so awesome! I have always wanted something like this, and now I finally have it. I literally paused this video as soon as he told us about it to try it out!
Rest of the video was good too, I guess.
Haha. Right? I"m so addicted to their miniature builder.
Same😁

Hey there kids, when he gets to the calculating ability modifiers part, he made it more complicated then it has to be. There is literally a guide in the player's handbook, on page 13 top right-hand corner that tells you what your ability modifiers will be from your ability scores. He was still right, but there's enough math in D&D as it is, no need to add more.
10 is 0
every even up, you slap +1 on your modifier
every odd down, you slap -1 on your modifier
so a 7 is two odds down. 9, 7. so -2.
a 14 is two evens up. 12, 14. so +2.
then logic it out
THANK YOU
true, but its good to know how these numbers are formed
Question about health. Do you start out with the maximum, and then on following levels roll for it?
@@Sovann_the_Mighty yes. There’s also a number that’s the average for that roll you can it instead. Example. For a sorcerer your hit dice is a d6 and you start lvl 1 with 6 plus your constitution modifier. Every level above that you can either roll a d6 and add constitution modifier or you can just take 4 plus constitution modifier. Each class is different so read your class
I’ve rewatched this video multiple times to make me and my siblings first characters. thank you SO much!
Thanks very much. I take that as a great complement.
I am my groups DM and I thank you so much, because this is me and my friends first campaign and we were worried about doing things wrong but this helped a ton!
I hope i had see this four days before where I helped my players make their characters (soon to be DM here)
DerpGR Gaming Good luck my friend!

Me too

How'd it go?
Finally, the logical step by step fill it out manual follow along video I was looking for, felt like such a loser depending on D&D beyond to do it for me. thanks
As an old-school player, I was thrilled to see you roll the dice for your Ability scores. Fantastic video!
As a new DM.
This guide was a GODSEND. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
This is FANTASTIC and explains so much. Especially if you've been listening to DND podcasts and have a bit of knowledge how the game play works. There's a lot of details about how to do this that the PHB isn't easy to decipher. Thank you!
Glad you found it useful!
Just starting d&d over quarantine so confusing hope it works out well
It’s been 7 months. How’s it going?
Got my books and stuff for my birthday last year, finally got started on my character a few days ago.
As a dnd newbie I just wanted to say thank you! This video helped me a lot! Felt really overwhelmed creating my first character.
Since I don't have time to go get the books (payday is next week and the first session I've been a part of in well over a decade is this weekend) I saw this and thought "since I watch everything at double speed, character creation in 15 minutes?! Hell yes!"
Thank you so much. It's been forever since I've played D&D, and when I did play, I just borrowed my cousins books to create my characters. Lol
Glad this helped! Happy gaming. :)
This sounds epic ngl
Ah I see another hollow knight fan
:D
I followed your guide for filling out my sheet, and when I sent it to my DM he said it was the most well organized character sheet he'd ever seen 😂so I guess you have his approval haha.
Hey, well done! 👏
I appreciate the quality and video production of this video😤 as someone who is new to d&d this actually helps
Now this is from the POV of someone with a 3D printer, idk how their shipped minis are, but the ones I’ve printed are great
Dude, thank you so much for what you do here, sooo accessible and fun to learn
Best beginner character building video I've seen so far
That equation for working out the Ability Score Modifiers is SO HELPFUL! I didn't realise. I had to keep looking them up! I feel like a total goober not seeing that. Thank you!
This video was very helpful, I made a Half-Elf Bard! Thank you so much!
Hey man, first timer here, and I can’t thank you enough for this
Thank you for the informative video. My wife and I are planning to buy the dnd starter kit to try out the game. I hope we love it, we are both very excited to try
Sounds great, Travis! Enjoy! :)
I have never ever played DnD and next Friday I’ll be DMing for my family who have also never played. I’m going to be sending them this video for sure!
My brother is making his first character, He wants to be a Githyanki Cleric of Loviatar. He is not making it easy for me to help.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
this was really helpful, thanks! im currently trying to learn how to play the game!
This is so weird because I needed help creating my eleven rouge...

I'm gonna comment again for the algorithm. I'm starting a campaign with all brand new players and I make them watch these and it really helps. Great video.
Thanks! Welcome back! Hope the game goes well. :D
Super useful video! Would definitely appreciate a video building a spell caster. Maybe wizard or sorcerer

Managed to convice my friend to play it with me, only problem is we're all clueless, so as the one that invited them, I'll be the DM and I'm learning the game so that I can teach them. Creating a character along with you was so helpful, and now I feel like I can help them do the same.
I have watched your every video of D&D and learned D&D in 3 days.....
Thanxxx😊
Never played D&D but always wanted to people thought I was weird for it but I met some friends that played it and we’re gonna start a campaign soon and this was so helpful thanks so much!
LIFESAVER, DUDE Thank you!! I came over from Pathfinder and was totlly lost on how to fill this sheet out. Playing over Discord, they can't really walk you through it, so this has been invaluable
I am a brand new player this was very helpful for me getting my character build. Much faster and easier to use than a couple other guides I found.
Nice. Thanks for the comment. Have fun!
Definitely going to recommend this video to my new players, very thorough without being daunting great guide
i come back to this video every time i design a new character! unbelievably helpful walkthrough!! thanks Nate!
Happy to help!
honestly this is the video that has made the most sense to me, thank u✨
There were always some spaces on the character sheet that I never understood. Thank you for this. Now I know what they are for and how to calculate their number and even use them in general.
As a new DM and very new to 5E, this guide has been an absolute Godsend. Thank you!
Thanks to this video I was able to make my first ever D&D character, Wulthrad Lyacaidon, a Raesokeran Canis! Thanks for the helpful info!
Thanks so much! I've been playing DND for about a year now, with me deciding to DM a few weeks after I first played. But I didn't fully know how to create characters sheets for my NPCs, but this video really helped me with that! Thank you so much!
I'm creating my first character ever this week for my first campaign with all newbies. This was very helpful and now I'm just even more excited!
This video helped so much as I am trying to get into dnd with also new friends and this helped me help them
Dude I can’t even lie I’ve watched so many Damn videos on how to play this game and none of them made sense. You clarified it and I understood everything thanks so much! I’m no longer scared to learn it 😂
I am newly getting into this game and your video cleared up a couple things I was confused about while filling out the sheet. I can now make the corrections to my character and finish filling out their information accurately.
Great. Happy gaming!
This really is the only good video of this process on the Tubes. Good job.
Thank you so much. As a total newbie to D&D who never played it, this video helps A LOT!
Getting ready to play my first game with the family. This helps a ton. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
