@@Linerunner99 True, but unless your DM is creating the adventure of their own, most books really only reach level 17. Reaching the bounds of 20 is usually DM discretion.

I've known all this stuff (in it's varying editions) for almost 30 years. I just watch these videos for the fun of it. They're so entertaining, in the 'oh, how cute' way.
I just finished a 9 hour session which was my first ever campaign. We fought a CR 4 drow gunslinger and barely escaped after around 7 hours of throwing and trying to hit him. And now we are level 2 and I'm thankful for this video.
A little note on feats: Like multi-classing, they are technically an optional rule. Common etiquette says you always first inquire your DM about if they use a given optional rule. That said, to this day I haven't met a single DM who disallows feats. Another thing that full spellcasters, and others with who can use cantrips, sometimes overlook when leveling up: At levels 5, 11 and 17, your cantrips might also improve in a way described in the description of each given cantrip. It's mostly your damage dealing cantrips that will improve in this way and usually by one die, but make sure you don't miss how your fire bolt should now be dealing 2d10 instead of simply 1d10 fire damage from level 5 and onwards. For those who multiclass, you'll be pleased to know that these improvements happen at your total character level rather than individual class level. All of this will likely be explained in other episodes, but since those episodes likely won't be directly tied to leveling up (such as a multi-class episode) and this is something people overlook when leveling up, I wanted to bring it up here as well.
@@yargolocus4853 this is exactly what I was thinking. If I'm playing a level 4 paladin and I take my 5th level dip into warlock for eldritch blast, I'd still be able to fire off two blast at once correct?
@@dren5810 Perhaps this is too powergaming, but you could be warlock 2, fighter 2 and sorcerer 3. This would give you action surge and quickened spell to cast Eldritch blast 6 times at once, dealing d10+CHA on each one edit. you can also burn warlock slots for more sorcery points, enabling you to do this every short rest along with action surge
Forgot to say about taking the average hp when leveling up which is half of the die +1. Though it is optional and always the dm's choice on which meathod. (Yes it is half+1 on an average. 1d6 is 4, 1d8 is 5, 1d10 is 6, and 1d12 is 7. D&D Beyond dose it, Share Tabletop dose it, and most vtt's automatically follow it when the average is picked)
It's important to note that a couple classes actually get more Ability Score Improvements (ABIs) than the others. Fighters will get another ABI at levels 6 and 14, while Rogues get an additional ABI at 10th! Otherwise, a great video from the DM god himself.
with the music and the meter of his voice makes me feel like I'm watching an Orientation Video when starting a new job. Instead of Players handbook, I'm hearing Employee's Handbook...
As a note, Ability Score Improvement is determined by class level, not overall level, so a level 7 Wizard with 3 levels in Warlock will only have the Ability Score Improvement once.
Ya know I only watched this cause I love watching these guys do stuff, and thought it would be some ggofy cute short, but I actually learned something and it was a really good explanation of the topic.
Key point that was missed. Make sure you check old abilities that you already have to make sure they haven’t changed. For example, Wild Shape changes at Level 4 and Level 8.

Ah, those sweet, sweet Warlock dips
@@yargolocus4853 this is exactly what I was thinking. If I'm playing a level 4 paladin and I take my 5th level dip into warlock for eldritch blast, I'd still be able to fire off two blast at once correct?
@@dren5810 Correct. You can be a level 19 fighter, take one level of warlock and action surge for 8 beams.
@@yargolocus4853 ...let the shenanigans begin!!
@@dren5810 Perhaps this is too powergaming, but you could be warlock 2, fighter 2 and sorcerer 3. This would give you action surge and quickened spell to cast Eldritch blast 6 times at once, dealing d10+CHA on each one
edit. you can also burn warlock slots for more sorcery points, enabling you to do this every short rest along with action surge
Whoever the editor is on this video y’all should hire him full time
The video is perfect since Earth just leveled up and should take some cool perk to make future adventures better! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Forgot to say about taking the average hp when leveling up which is half of the die +1. Though it is optional and always the dm's choice on which meathod. (Yes it is half+1 on an average. 1d6 is 4, 1d8 is 5, 1d10 is 6, and 1d12 is 7. D&D Beyond dose it, Share Tabletop dose it, and most vtt's automatically follow it when the average is picked)
i swore up and down Matt said hamburger helper for a second there LMAO!!! 0:12
My life is about the crush down in flames and burn, but hearing Sam sing makes me smile even now :3
thank you this is really helpful. somehow i got really confused during my level up. you are all life savers!!!
Its been so long since I heard that beautiful voice. :D 8 more days I cant handle this :D
That Cloud Strife Grog cracked me up but good xD
Ah, yes. The warrior we all know and love...Grog Strife.
It's important to note that a couple classes actually get more Ability Score Improvements (ABIs) than the others. Fighters will get another ABI at levels 6 and 14, while Rogues get an additional ABI at 10th! Otherwise, a great video from the DM god himself.
@Follow the howl Whoops, you're right, I always manage to get those reversed. Thanks for pointing it out!
Sam Riegels "DING" at end of title sequence is so much more appropriate for this topic :)
3:00 this changes EVERYTHING
I love the music in this because Matt is that magical. xD
0:11 Grog Strife. Now all we need is the rest of the Vox Machina to be drawn as FF VII characters.
with the music and the meter of his voice makes me feel like I'm watching an Orientation Video when starting a new job. Instead of Players handbook, I'm hearing Employee's Handbook...
Sam Riegal singing and Matt hosting? Perfect. Perfectttttt.
Starting my 1st ever campaign next Thursday, I can't wait 🤩
As a note, Ability Score Improvement is determined by class level, not overall level, so a level 7 Wizard with 3 levels in Warlock will only have the Ability Score Improvement once.
I know I'm late for all this but thank God I discovered this through a friend, getting ready to DM my first game tonight and im a bit nervous
Ya know I only watched this cause I love watching these guys do stuff, and thought it would be some ggofy cute short, but I actually learned something and it was a really good explanation of the topic.
Matt: you can't get strength over 20
Terry Crews: hold my yogurt
That Bardbarian at 3:25 XD
Barbardian
Key point that was missed. Make sure you check old abilities that you already have to make sure they haven’t changed. For example, Wild Shape changes at Level 4 and Level 8.
Can you do an episode that walks through the Character sheet, section by section? I showed one to a first timer and they got kinda over whelmed trying to read and flip around.
“Not bad huh?” That voice was so GOOD
I'm literally my friend group's forever DM and I still watch these avidly
I just got into D&D about a month ago thanks to ProJared and Commander Holly, and "Dice, Camera, Action" which I'm pretty much obsessed with at the moment. I just wanted to thank Critical Role and Matthew Mercer for educating me this past month. For the moment I'm content watching from the sidelines, but I'll be picking up the Player's Handbook and Monster Manual very soon. Can't wait to create my very first character, a female ranger who I've written a lot of stories about and role played in many games. Should be a lot of fun.
Thank you! This video kept me from leveling up Wrong with Too Few Hit Points when I bumped my constitution modifier.
Continue to list PHB pages please
As a complete newbie at dnd this helped a lot. I’ve had a lot of levelling up but honestly didn’t know what I could improve on, aside from adding new spells. Also looks like I’m gonna need to get the players handbook 😅
Matt:
Cha:19
Str:17
Wis:11
Int:11
Con:16
Dex:16
You rolled really well on life's character sheet
Sam is so epic he can sing all the harmonies at the same time.
"-solving, or sometimes creating conflict."
*remembers just last week how my Druid gave sprites permission to play with the sleeping C/E Conquest Paladin and it immediately turned into a fight between us and the 5 sprites, a dryad, and 3 bears*
Me: "How was I supposed to know they killed evil on the spot!?"
