Thanks so much! I'm coming back to D&D after 35 years - go figure! - and so much has changed. I was really struggling to wrap my head around it until I found this video.
There are far worse ways to learn a RPG system than making a bunch of characters. With D&D 5e in particular, it's really hard to make a borked character unless you consciously try to make them suck. Just have a play around, you'll work it out.
Sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly forgot my account password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
I’m making a wizard school dropout too. He is a warlock though, and formed a pact because he was too lazy to actually learn magic. He technically got expelled, but it was due to laziness so I’m gonna consider it dropping out. He now adventures in hopes of becoming more powerful so he can prove his to his teachers that the pact he made was beneficial.
Hey! How did the campaign go? Btw, reading your backstory snippet, i thought of a way to make it connext more (ik well past creation). "His laziness was causing a lot of issues in wizard school, so he made a warlock pact to streamline learning magic. Fed up with the PC's repeated shortcuts, expelled him. He now travels to gain more power to prove the pact he made was beneficial."
23:00 In my fist big campaign, I played a Human Sorcerer with dragon ancestry who used an earring as a focus. She was so much fun to play! Burning hands!
Yes thank you for this, I’ve been struggling to find a good tutorial for creating characters, please please please please do more of these for each type of character.
I want to thank of great Dr. Todd he brought my boyfriend back to me. i had seen many people to get him back but nothing, Dr. Todd gave me a consultation and told me all truth, and I trusted Dr. Todd and had him do the spells for me. it took awhile because it was very very messy between us. i had to wait for each spell to do its work. but once the last spell finally was working and the other spells had worked, that is when he called. we met. then it took many more meetings. but now we are back together and i can only thank Dr.Todd, he is the greatest, i will come to Dr. Todd for life. This video is awesome! I'm a new DM to a Group of new players and we are one session from finishing one of the starter campaigns. lv 1-5 with pre made characters... We had fun with it but it was difficult for my players to form any connection with their pre made characters and it did have some effect on the story telling aspect. This is going to be a BIG help when we finish and start a legit campaign. super stoked.
love the Hero Forge too - for me almost half the fun is character creation - then spring boarding to writing the backstory. thanks again for another great video that clearly explains D&D- cheers - stay safe!
Thank you for your tutorial. Since I'm transitioning from Pathfinder to D&D, these videos are really useful to understand those new character creation mechanics
Again, so useful! You've taught me those little pieces of information that I could never find out how to calculate or why there were on the character sheet or even what they do. Thanks so much!
I've never played D&D but have always wanted to. You are making everything make SO much sense, and I am enjoying this process immensely! My character's story isn't fully fleshed out quite yet, but I think I've got a great start! He's a life domain half-elf cleric. In real life my mom's side of the family are strict mormons (elves) and my dad's side of the family are strict catholics (humans)...lol, true story! And in real life, I've cut almost all ties to both sides of my family and am not at all a religious person. What a wonderful backdrop for my (hermit) cleric! After losing both parents (not sure how this happens in his story yet...but both my parents in real life have passed over the last several years) he's coming out of exile in search of enlightenment and self discovery. Being the son of 2 parents of differing gods (Corellon for the elves and Ilmater for humans) he has been born with innate powers to heal and to protect, though he has had life long struggles with fully believing in anything spiritual (not sure how to work this out exactly yet). A group of recent friends has reached out to him seeking the help of a healer on their adventures which I happily agreed to. I'm seeking out self-knowledge and enlightenment. I'm still trying to figure out who I am and where I belong in the world. ...My backstory has a lot of holes in it and isn't even close to being fully figured out yet, but I really do think I have a good start!
The only characters I'm proficient in creating right now are Fighters. This Magic casting creation sure is helping me into running my full campaign this September with 4 other players.
This is really helpful! I occasionally play online one-shots with a druid, and it's great to get a recap! She was made on D&D Beyond, but I'm making my first characters from scratch right now. I usually play bruisers, so it's a real learning curve!
I definitely agree with what you said about rolling for characters. I tried rolling four d6 dice at he same time earlier today to see what some of the possibilities were so I had a good idea of what some of the numbers might be when I got there for my character. Using the method of taking the roll worth the least off of the four and adding the remaining three, I rolled 6, 12, 12, 4, 7 in that order.
Hi thank you so much for you videos they totally help for new players like me and my sisters, which by the way we are doing a campaign its so rough but we are still having so much fun. One quick note is that you forgot to mention how many new spells you can add to your spellbook after lvl one it took me a while to find it and I feel that maybe other newer players like me could have the same problems... anyways keep this amazing tutorial videos going!!!
Huh. I just learned that my wizard character has played the past half-dozen or so -games- sessions without using his weapon attack modifiers. Good thing he's only been in one hand-to-hand fight so far, but I have to wonder if he wouldn't have done better in that one fight if I'd realised that he should be adding his dex modifer plus proficiency to his attack. (I have a feeling our DM fudged a couple of the enemy attack rolls to let me off easy because I'm pretty new to table-top D&D). Edited: Wrong terminology. My fault.
That's one thing that DNDbeyond can be helpful with. When all your information is entered, it actually shows what the attack roll modifiers are, along with showing the options for most of the things you can do with an action, bonus action, etc, that many people get confused on. So even if you don't use it for rolling or as your primary character sheet, it can still help you know some of the rules you might miss. And you don't need to pay for an account for just that basic stuff.
Just wanted to give you a comment to say a massive thank you, even 4 years on your video is still helping new blood into the DnD world. They've helped me massively taking my first steps into a campaign
Hey i watched this video a few days ago and it helped a lot thanks to you i made by far my favorite (and only dnd charter) an orc wizard named wilhelm the destroyer.
Btw you are really good at this and you should keep it up I am new to dnd but I am trying to get my friends into it and your DM videos are helping a lot
It doesn't make a difference if you're from India or not. Why do they always say this? Not trying to be rude but we don't need to know if someone is from this and this country.
Do you recommend dnd beyond or the normal character sheet. I like normal character sheets but it is hard to track the spells. Do you know a free and easy way to write down spells or print them from somewhere. I don’t want to buy the spell cards because they are not cheap. Amazing tutorial as always and keep up the good work.

Serious question... I'm making a fighter/warlock, if I take the magic initiate feat for my fighter and recieve "two cantrips and one lvl 1 spell" is that separate from my warlocks spell slots n max cantrips?
I played D&D as a kid (mid-to-late 80s). I don't remember much of the rules. Recently got back into it and am really enjoy it. I don't remember spellcasting being so difficult (but we probably weren't following the rules properly back then and/or I'm just old now, LOL). You have some really good stuff on this channel. Besides just making the character for show in a YT video, is that a viable way to play? Sure seems like it, and that would totally be something I'd like to do. Thanks.

Reacently I created for the joy of it my first D&D Charisma based Character. [I'm rellatively new to D&D. I've pladed other RPGs but I like to have a hold of the world/sistem before I comit to a sociable caracter so I do not feel like I'm about to screw my party. And I have only played 2 caracters before] And I, in tipical "me" fashion, tried to create something weird and "unique". It is a bit weird to find out official rules to create something that you just made up, by the way. But I digress. I went at first: Well, the Charisma is the atribute of the Bard. But then... my DM told me that so it is for the Sorcerer [At least in 3.5 wich is what "We" play]. And I wanted to spice things up. So... what if my character had a parent that was a Sorcerer and another one that was a Bard. And becouse he wants to please both, He is actually both. Then, I found out that Multiclass and Gestalt exist... Okey. No biggy. I'll ramp it up. My father is not a Sorcerer. It is a real dragon. And my mother is not "only" a bard. It is the daughter of Elune and a goat. Aasimar exist. Fuck. Well. Let's see if WASD20 has something to say about my newly created character. Oh, yeah. You go on 5E. Now I hope you reed this.
Nate, i need some help. I already know how to make a character, but i'm having a hard time at the 3rd page with spellcasters that have their entire Spell list as Known Spells, such as the cleric. That's because it's just too many spells and they can't all fit in their appropriate spaces in the Character Sheet. I'd like to know what you'd do in this Situation, i don't have a printed copy of It, so i can't really write with a pencil, and i don't have a PC, so i'm editing the Sheet entirely through my phone by typing everything in. Thanks in advance :)
Spellcasters like Clerics do not know all spells in their spell list. They can prepare a set number of spells, but not all. It is found under the spellcasting information in the class. That information is NOT copy paste between the classes. You have to read it. A cleric can prepare (Wis mod + Cleric level) amount of spells, and can replace those spells after a long rest. A level 5 cleric with a + 4 in Wisdom can prepare 9 spells, and the additional spells they get from their domain for free. A Life Cleric does not need to prepare Bless or Cure Wounds as they get those prepared for free. So a level 5 Life Cleric with +4 Wis can have 15 spells prepared. He can not have ALL spells prepared at once.
Depends on the class. If you have a set number of known spells, you can place as many as you want in the 1st level. You just can't replace them. If you know your whole spell list and have to prepare spells you can place as many as you want in each level as the number of prepared spells you have. You will just be locked with your choice until the next long rest.
Thanks so much! I'm coming back to D&D after 35 years - go figure! - and so much has changed. I was really struggling to wrap my head around it until I found this video.

Basically, they give you the powers listed below each school of magic. It tells you which level do you get those abilities at.

RANGERS SUCK, JUST PLAY A FIGHTER WITH A BOW
i Lack Logic, your opinion. Everyone’s option is different bro :/
Can the quarterstaff (equipment) also be your arcane focus? I really like your channel thanks And I will check out the website too.
I believe you can combine the two, and if your DM is willing you can always tweak the rules
Have you ever played DCC?
I have! ‘‘Twas fun.
I have a question does your spell slot add up or lvl up the same thing as proficiency bonus
The number of spell slots does go up every level, but you’ll want to check the chart at the beginning of each class to see how much.
@@WASD20 oh thxs :)
I dont get the part where you talk about damage bonus can you explain a bit (I'm new)
Nvm I figured it out
Remember young players may be watching this. Don't think you needed to make him a " boozer"
Otherwise you're videos rock
Can someone help me understand how many spell I can put in each spell level, like for my 1st level spells how many can I put, and how many per level?
Depends on the class. If you have a set number of known spells, you can place as many as you want in the 1st level. You just can't replace them. If you know your whole spell list and have to prepare spells you can place as many as you want in each level as the number of prepared spells you have. You will just be locked with your choice until the next long rest.
Dang... Eminem doing D&D videos now ? Cool ! :-D
Wow
Well, There is no side 3 on my sheet...
