    My nephew lives in Flagstaff. His passion is mountain biking and is a Coconino County para rescue EMT. He repels from the helicopter down to the person in need. No helicopter hoist as patient & rescuer are clipped in and flown out on the end of a 150ft rope. Just like you guys, balls of steel.

    That train segment was the most exciting thing i've ever seen😅. That train driver was definitely thinking "Look at them kids riding their scoots with trailers out in the middle of nowhere!"
    Also i think this is my most favourite episode/part so far. Everything is just so pretty,everything in the American South-West is just so pretty. That grand canyon view was the absolute perfect cherry on top.

      Thanks! The Grand Canyon was truly impressive! I am editing Days 14-16 right now. After we left the Grand Canyon, we took a hot air balloon ride above Albuquerque, New Mexico. I'll be posting part of that balloon ride in the Day 14 ride video, and then again in a dedicated 360° video! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

      Yeah, I'll bet it does! My buddy, Adrian, said that he's done the hike down before, and rode the donkeys on one of his visits. That view from the southern rim is staggering... the scale of everything just doesn't compute. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    I know I’m just catching up on your videos. The beginning of the summer of 2023 I got the pleasure of driving across the Mojave desert which was on my bucket list. But the air temperature at 4 o’clock in the morning was 118°. All the other drivers on the CB kept telling me you need to go faster. I was cruising along at 60 miles an hour because I was heavy loaded almost at 78,000 pounds with truck trailer and load. I don’t know how many hours it was before I got to the first gas station. But I was relieved to see civilization. And then started east into climbing the mountains. Which took like forever at the top speed of about 12 to 15 miles an hour.

      We got lucky that day crossing the Mojave! That is the driest desert in the Americas, but we had cloudy weather, and it actually rained on is just a bit!
      Unfortunately, I wasn't so lucky on my second Scooter Cannonball through the Mojave. I blew a CVT belt on my Honda PCX150 and had to change it on the side of the highway! ua-cam.com/video/SCbcQmjkNCE/v-deo.html

    At last you guys can actually stop and visit stuff. The cannonbal is a bit mad, you go through the entire USA but you can never stop to look. The ideal moto-camping trip should cover say 160 miles per day and go at least three times slower than the cannonball. Shit, you find somewhere really nice, then hang out there for as long as you can, lock the bike up with some local business and go home by plane.

    I feel for ya, Garmin XT sent me in the wrong direction by a 100 miles south, through an Indian reservation, down a paved road into a 20 mile soft sand trap, with a BMW R1200RT. Backtracked on paved road to find the correct road was on the next block over and all paved. Welcome to Montana, ha ha

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому

      Oh yeah... been there, done that. Sand bogs on with a big heavy bike really sucks. I ended up in that situation a couple of times on a fully-loaded GoldWing. There's nothing fun about trying to wrangle a 750-pound machine in soft sand or deep gravel, especially if you have to stop and turn around or back it up. OOoof.
      My Garmin XT hasn't steered me too far off course yet, but this 396 that I used on this trip sent me down a dirt road into a farmer's field. I guess it thought that I could sneak my way through private property for the remainder of the 20-ish miles to my destination: ua-cam.com/video/37BTEHXWfxU/v-deo.html . 😉👍 --QM

      @@QuasiMotard My favorite old world class Garmin years ago, sent me through a a Mexican back country private property, through a farmers back yard, while they were having lunch, through two gates, to dead end miles later, I had to backtrack, smile and wave as they finished their lunch, crazy Gringo. I've been diverted off the freeway, before the bridge, into the river, I knew where Garmin was going, just wanted to see how far it would take this new adventure, it would have taken me swimming. Another favorite is through a farmers front yard, into the corn field, yeah, didn't go there either. So Far XT has been best of the lot. At least I havent gotten arrested yet.

    In your excitement, I think you forgot what you read, but I'm a math/physics geek and I had to figure it out....
    The sign said 24 square miles, for argument sakes, let's state its a perfect circle, which would yield a radius of ~2.75 miles.
    Using the projectile formula and the best case angle of 45°, the "magma" would have to be ejected at ~467 mph, with a height of ~3645 feet.

    • @anthonytetreau522
      @anthonytetreau522 2 роки тому +1

      To add a note to this, that would be the slowest velocity to reach that specific outside radius. Meaning it could have been ejected at a less optimal angle, at a much higher velocity.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому

      Thanks for that! I would have needed to dig through volumes of math just to remember the formulas! I would assume that the ejecta would be expelled at angles above 45°, but I'm no volcanologist. The immense pressure and kinetic energy involved is just staggering.
      I couldn't wrap my brain around the claimed 250-foot height of that cinder cone. If the cone that was in our near field at the lookout station appeared to be that tall, then how could it be 1.1 miles away? We're talking about a height-distance ratio of 23.2:1. It appeared to be much larger (if it was really 1.1 miles distant), or a lot closer than the claimed distance. Maybe the cone closest to us wasn't the primary one?
      Dunno... my brain was cooked by the Cannonball and all of the mountain inclines that we suffered for the previous several days. We had trouble figuring out whether we were going uphill, downhill, or level several times during the mountain rides. Our only incication of incline was engine strain, or when we would step off of the bikes to refill and couldn't stand up straight. 🤣👍 --QM

    FYI, I've done the rim to rim trail, can't remember which is which, but one side is 6000 down and the other is 5000 feet. The distance (the trail is ~24 miles long) from rim to rim makes the depth deceiving.

    • @QuasiMotard

      We were at the south rim for these pictures and our night of moto-camping. I was truly impressed by the canyon... words can't describe that sense of scale. We were very lucky with our timing and the lighting that evening. The air was perfectly calm and the skies over the canyon were quite clear preceeding that storm. 😉👍 --QM

  • @Pibbmasta
    @Pibbmasta 2 роки тому +1

    Hey Quasi! How well do you think the Navi would handle something like the Cannonball run?

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому +1

      That's a good question! I think the Navi would survive the event, but I'm not sure that my posterior would! 🤣
      I've already put the bug in the ear of the folks in the SCBR forum here: forum.scootercannonballrun.com/t/honda-navi-110-for-the-2023-scbr/2465 . So, I'm considering the possiblity of riding the Navi for the 2023 SCBR event. The Navi is considerably slower and less-efficient than my Super Cub, so I'd be voluntarily signing up for 15+ hours/day of butt numbing torture.
      I would need to figure out a decent fueling solution because the Navi is NOT fuel-efficient at only ~75 MPG, so its 0.9-gallon tank only yields ~68 miles to empty. That will generate a LOT of roadside pitstops during a 3500-mile adventure! If I can rig an auxiliary tank (e.g., racing fuel cell in place of the lower storage box), then it might be feasible. The Navi's top speed of ~50 MPH will be considerably lower in hills and at higher altitudes, so I would budget ~40 MPH as my average speed.
      The Navi's awful OEM tires would need to be replaced with something that has better wet grip, and hopefully with a wider rear footprint to minimize the Navi's propensity to bob & weave in cross winds. Tires with some knobby would be a good idea for the gravel and off-road segments.
      I don't think that I would tow my trailer with the Navi because it's already down on power compared to the Super Cub. That means I would need to carry only the essential tools and spares for the trip on the bike... probably in a top box on the rear rack. Spare tire, spare CVT belt and rollers, a flat kit, and required tools for the CVT and tire swap... that's about it. Motocamping would be a challenge with such a minimal loadout, so I'd have to consider sharing hotel rooms again during the event.
      Mechanically, I think the Navi would do just fine. The engine is lifted directly from the Honda Activa 110 scooter (India), and that's known to be extremely reliable. It's a low-stress, low-compression, air-cooled engine... and about as reliable as a hammer. I don't know how the CVT belt and rollers will hold up to sustained high-speed abuse, but those are cheap parts and they're easy to replace on the road.
      Easy is boring, so I might just sign up for the torture! 😉👍 --QM

    • @Pibbmasta
      @Pibbmasta 2 роки тому +1

      @@QuasiMotard Haha, that last bit definitely rings true to your outlook throughout the entire cannonball run! You have to enjoy the challenge and discomfort to have fun in such an event. But also thank you for the very thought out response! I've been toying with the idea of getting a scooter for a long time as a way to get around town and save money on gas compared to a car, while also being a little bit easier to run than a motorcycle (I still have my CB300R!) in traffic, and the price and look of the Navi seem just right. I also considered something like this event you're doing right now too! But I'm not sure how it would hold up compared to say an ADV150, but it's also considerably more expensive.
