Hi, Blu-ray track is DTD-HD MA 7.1, not 5.1.
Ordered. I have not seen it and it sounds like I should be ashamed of myself.....Thanks man
They are suppose to make a squeal.
@@liutungwei5160 S* DTS Edit man. 🙄
This is one of my ALL TIME favorite Sci-fi moves ever and cannot understand how it could have "flopped" in any way. Its is a must have and if you are a sci-fi lover and have not seen it yet... what rock are you living under? Just buy it!
For sure should have been a blockbuster. I could never understand how is wasn't.
The 2 title marketing was very confusing and made the film look less interesting than it was.
I mean, Blade Runner flopped at the box office. It's in good company.
@@markiep8477 but BR theatrical with voice over is pretty weak
@@jsb1944 It's better without, but it was still a fantastic movie in the original theatrical release.
Jeff they also cut of the deepest bass frequency notes on War of the worlds 4K UHD disc.
How could it sound better? Frequency response drops off a cliff from 40Hz so
they didn’t “just” balance the sine waves.
This is one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made. Brilliant. I saw it in theaters and I was blown away how amazing it was.
It's still crazy to me that physical media has had a resurgence but the number of 4k player manufacturers keeps dwindling down to practically none.
Yes. Well, I can relate to this because I got a collection of 3D discs. My old TV broke and nobody manufactures 3D TV's anymore.
@@marcus1333 Dang, that hurts to hear!
@@marcus1333i hard there were 3D projectors tho
Whaaaattt??? They finally put it out on 4k blu-ray! I can't wait to get that one. I used to have the 3D blu-ray for a while. Great video!
How was the 3D
3D is the way to go with this movie 🎬
I'm usually one of the first to decry things like that bass "issue", but the fact of the matter is this was a decision made in the Atmos mixing process, not a mistake that sneaked it's way past QA.
I love this movie. It's so under-rated and I always wanted them to make a sequel.
I just rewatched this on PLEX last week. Once again I was blown away by this film. I also thought how great would it be to experience it on 4K, what a pleasant surprise 😮
I can't wait to own this. I have it on pre order. Been waiting a long time for this to come to 4K with Dolby Atmos
Thought you had an Afro in your thumbnail
I’m so hyped. I’ve got it preordered. I’ve only seen this one streaming and it’s very dark so I’m hoping it’s cleaner and not as muddy.
my system plays flat a reference down to 8 Hz. i feel it.
You don't want the 4K then is it has an aggressive filter set at 30Hz.
@@jasonlivez7234 On a lighter note, the included Blu-ray is the old disc, so you get the original sound mix there.
I might pick this up, but I love my 3D blu-ray.
Added depth, ha 3D is the way to go!
That Freddy looks so real nice
I can't wait!!!!!!!
Can't wait to watch the ending with HDR. Always felt like the black levels at the end were too dark on Blu-ray and digital UHD.
This movie is an all time favorite. They played the ground hog day effect perfectly where it didn't get old and the story kept pushing forward. I'm nervous about the bass discussion now. Personally, I thought the opening was weird with that signal, and I wasn't sure what the intention was. However, if it has been neutered, has the rest of the bass during the movie also been neutered? I'm on the fence as it is because the 3D bluray of this movie is excellent.
Atmos bass is not as insanely deep like DTS-HD MA 7.1, but it still sounds awesome. Sound panning is improved.
Yes the 3d is real good man i dont understand 3d didnt stay
I watch/read a ton of physical media reviews, and your reviews are my favorite. Love the way you review movies; great stuff! Keep it up!
For those of us that spend 10s of thousands of dollars on our subwoofers we want the subsonic bass. What a disappointment that they remove the bass in the opening scene. I'll stick to my 3d and original blu-ray copy. My lumagen will pump out the hdr and use neural x to upmix to atmos
Wavelength is to big for homes anyway. 20hz is incredibly difficult to playback cleanly. Theres really nothing to gain by going lower. You just get noise. And i dont rlly care what subs you have because you need a 10 foot thicc absorber over the complete back of your room. If you just want noise and not control. Then just generate the Signal yourself. Do you have watched mad max? If yes then what are the most insane bass scenes? There are a few Tricky ones for a subwoofer in there ;)
One of my favorite discs in 4k! Maybe my favorite. Classic. Needs a sequel!
Great Intro! Absolutely love this film and so happy, that I can finally watch it in 4K. Keep up the great content!
This is a great sci fi movie. Can’t wait to hear the atmos soundtrack.
A time loop is on of my favourite tropes. I haven’t got this on physical media, so I think this is a must buy.
Awesome to hear they did a great job on the transfer! I love this movie, so I preordered the steelbook version as soon as it became available. Just got shipping notice earlier today, so I'm hoping I get it earlier than the Tuesday ETA (a lot of my orders from Best Buy arrive earlier than expected).
I must have watched this a dozen times, the blu ray is very good. Look forward to upgrading!
One of my favorite movies. Must buy. I have the 3D version as well. Top tier disc.
As long as they didn't tone the audio down like war of the world's 4k release I'll be happy. Sounds like they did a good job on this one. Excited to pick it up!
EOT is just as bad as WOTW, it drops off hard at 30HZ.
@@jasonlivez7234 it sounds like they just killed the opening intro bass drop though? Are you saying they applied that throughout the entire movie too?
@@jumpmanballerz Yes, Warner removed bass with an aggressive 30Hz filter with only a small amount of usable content left at 26Hz. Down a whopping 15 DB lower (more of less). The bass graphs can be seen at AVSforum. If any content was left after the intro, the graph would clearly illustrate it as it documents all bass throughout the duration of the movie.
Waiting on my collectors edition here in the UK August 1st looking forward to watching it again in 4k
Great review, thank you! I will add this one to my “must buy” list.
I have the 3D version of this and have been waiting for this 4K release for SOOOOO long. It is finally here and I am excited.
Awesome. Thanks Jeff!
Great review as always Jeff--just got the steelbook in. I can't wait watch this!
Thank you! I'm so excited for this one!
I know you don't call this sort of thing out that often but it's worth calling out how good Tom Cruise's acting was in this movie - a real transformation of character. Great fun and Emily is sensational. Great review Jeff.
Live Die Repeat was in the trailer marketing. You'd see it before the name drop and it would massively confuse people as to what the movies name was. It was the tag line so you'd see the tag plastered on the poster and the title buried at the bottom. So I'm not surprised people flip flop on the name. Its tag line became associated with its name....arguably a first in film history
I like the new intro reel. Love this movie, ordered as soon as it hit preorder.
Used your link, wish it wasn't a pre order though. Thanks for the review, I was on the fence until I watched this!
Great to hear! Thanks Jeff
I love this movie.. I'm looking forward to checking it out on 4k. Great review man.
One of my favorite movies! Can't wait to get this!
Finally!!! Never saw it but I knew I would buy it immediately once it came out on 4K. Let's gooooo
Great review. Thanks!
I finally played this disk on my legendary Oppo D203 player.
This is hands down, my new reference disk for sound. Why can’t all action movies be this good?!
The 3d version was good as well, the scene where there about to be dropped on the beach is just amazing.
I may have to pick that up, saw it once on cable, remember enjoying it
Man, I've been waiting for this!
I love this movie and have been waiting for the 4K version to buy it. Thanks Jeff, preordered from your link. 👍
Can’t believe they took out the rumble at the beginning. My sub goes down to 15Hz and it would shake the whole house. Now it is GONE. My 4K Vudu stream rumbles the house more at the start then this 4K disc. Looks like I’m keeping the bluray and 3D bluray.
Do you have the disc yet? Otherwise how would you know VUDU is better?
I didn’t think the reviewer said they took out the rumble at the beginning. I understand that they have just tamed the “subwoofer killer” element of the clip. It’s one of my favourite films and the review has really whetted my appetite for the UK release.
@@neiljones8462 exactly. It’s still a booming disc and that scene still has huge LFE moments.
@@JeffRauseo booming at 30Hz or 20Hz?
Thanks for the review. This is an amazing movie. Sounds like I'll need to buy a new copy for those upgrades!
Already preordered it weeks ago. I totally forgot about it lol.
So exited to see this film in 4K! Great movie 😄👍 One of my favorites also. Thanks for the review Films at Home 👍
Awesome review. Still using Bluray to upmix and soundtrack is still one of the best. Def buying this 4k!!!!
Another great video Jeff, I love this movie, will definitely pick it up on 4K because of the Atmos!
Correction: the original audio on the blu ray is 7.1 and not 5.1!!!
Someone's gonna mux together the original boom and the rest of this track, just watch haha. I'm gonna wait till I see a deal on this, great movie but I can wait for that. Good review as always!
Can’t beat the 3D bluray version 😊
Absolutely right! Excellent 3D conversion on this one.
Unless you can pair atmos with 3D!!!
@@Chris-hr2uj That's what us 3D fans do, a spot of re-muxing for the optimum version!
Thank you for your review.
Already pre-ordered it yesterday! One of Cruise’s and Blunt’s best, IMO!
I am not surprised it has such good atmos, heard that Cruise is a big fan of the tech.
Thanks for the review l have the movie but iam looking forward to getting this in 4k
For all those who have the ability to use PEQ filters and are disappointed with the bass; you can add the bass back with BEQ. There’s a whole thread on it on AVS forums. Just need to be careful. It’s great for MAs and anyone with a HoverBoss or EZHover (or whatever it’s being called now).
As for EoT. I’m very excited to watch it in 4K. I don’t have my surrounds or Atmos speakers built yet. But, it’s all about the bass for me anyway. One of my favorite sci-fi movies. And, definitely a very underrated movie.
Just ordered mine last night. Torn about whether to get the Zavvi exclusive tho
I have this on blu-ray and 4k streaming. The audio on streaming is really good so I'm excited to pick this up next week.
You'll be disappointed if you have a good subwoofer. Check the comment section closer.
Got my steelbook on pre-order from BB hope it comes next week!
BB?
@@CannonRaw Best Buy
Just got my BB steelbook edition in the mail plan on watching it this upcoming weekend
YES! This is what I was hoping for. Besides getting at least a noticeable (if not substantial) improvement in image quality over the blu-ray, the audio is what I was most concerned with.
The bass drops off hard at 30HZ on the 4K.
@@jasonlivez7234 oh no. Why the F would they mess with that glorious demo bit....grrr...
I've had the steelbook pre-ordered since day one. Can't wait to check this out. Jeff, would you consider this a sharp detailed movie or is it soft in some parts?
Just picked this up yesterday and watched it last night. Great film. That intro scene with the crazy bass def worked my SVS sub lol I thought it was gonna damage it for sure. Guess I've been spoiled with how newer films look in 4K compared to this. It wasn't as sharp/crisp as I thought it would be, but it was still pretty good in a lot of scenes.
This is the second or third time I’ve followed your recommendation and ordered a move while watching your video. I want more Atmos movies and trust your opinion, can’t wait for the next movie that will keep my Amazon bill from never ending…
The blu ray opening scene, that bass sound you talking bout sounds bad, I've never liked it, so if it's improved in the 4k disc then I would say that alone is worth buying! Mine arrives Tuesday and can't wait! Thanks for the review!
Thanks Jeff!
Thanks
This is one of my personal favourite sci-fi films of all-time, even still to this day that I think this is the best film adaptation based on the original manga, All You Need is Kill (Best title ever, IMO), I have ever seen in my life. I’ll be getting the Zavvi Exclusive edition as it got more collectibles like art cards, booklets, and posters (quite similar to the HMV one but the only difference between the two is that HMV does not ship overseas which is an absolute slap in my face), but it’s still pricey at the moment so maybe one day I’ll be purchasing it if Zavvi dropped the price.
I may have to double dip fir this one. I do have a 7.2.2 surround system. Love the movie too.
The original blu-ray was not 5.1 but 7.1.
Nice intro!
Thanks Jeff, I picked up the collectors edition. I'm surprised you didn't comment on the HDR and lack of Dolby vision which is present on the Vudu stream.
Great movie. Have it in 3D. Will pick it up on 4K.
I’m looking forward to getting this one when my order ships out. I still wish the steelbook had just been the Full Metal Bitch poster.
I know we are about physical medium here. I recently bought the 3D version of this title from Hamilton Books for cheap. It had an old Ultraviolet code that Vudu accepted.
It is showing up as 4K in my UA-cam movie library. I noticed that a large chunk of titles that I bought on Blu Ray are showing up as 4K in the You Tube library but are still 1080P in my other accounts.
Are they changing the sound mix on the digital copies?
Edge of Tomorrow Ultimate Collector's Edition with Steelbook 4K is up for preorder on Amazon UK (Out 1st August) really in 2 minds about buying it through as I've got the blu ray.
How dare they remove / modify that intro base extension.!!! Not happy. I noticed the base difference right away, didn't need a wave form to notice it. That's what made this movie!! Lol
I'm excited for those one. Yeah the bass at the beginning was cool on the blu-ray, but I'd rather have a well balanced mix throughout the movie. WB usually delivers solid tracks.
The bass drops off hard at 30HZ on the 4K.
@@jasonlivez7234 starts to drop at 40Hz
@@lawrence09151 You're right, it does roll at 40Hz but I was counting peaks
Love this film - it’s an easy watch. Love the ground hog day feel of it too.
I didn’t like the movie....
I LOVED the movie! It’s one of the best sci-fi action films I’ve ever seen. I’ll definitely be ordering this 4K UHD Blu-ray.
Did or will my digital copy I bought on Vudu awhile back change the beginning? I may need to rewatch the beginning before my copy arrives.
The Dolby TrueHD alone is worth the purchase of this 4k version of Edge of Tomorrow! Great Sci-fi and two of my fav actors in it =)
This is such a good movie..I will buy it for sure. thanks for the review :)
Hi Jeff. I bought the Blu ray 3 months ago and am now moving home so everything is packed. Nice review and I will definitely be buying this on 4K. I purchase films for the cinematic experience and find that most of my discs are in mono or stereo so the garbage about wave forms is ridiculous. I know this will infuriate some, but it's all about a cinematic experience versus demo movies. In other words I'll buy a great film in mono versus a piece of garbage in Atmos. BTW I have a 29x29 foot theater with multiple of your chairs and a JVC 4K projector onto a 150" 2.35 screen with an SVS PB4000 in a 7.1.4 setup. Keep up the great work.
Do you know what else is ridiculous? The fact that they set the hard bass filter at 30Hz for the UHD. Just thought someone with a setup like yours would like to know.
@@jasonlivez7234 thanks for being ridiculous.
Yeah, a good movie in mono vs a bad movie in Atmos is not at all the problem. The problem here is they neutered the bass, for no reason other than to protect those with shitty setups. When I think of “a good movie in mono”, I either think of old movies that never had stereo or higher sound until the home video days, or movies from the 70s and 80s that have awful surround remixes (Kubrick’s movies and The Terminator are great examples. Bad movies with Atmos is up for debate, since the same modern movies with Atmos are equally loved and hated. To compare movie qualities and sound qualities with a disc where the sound was messed with is apples to oranges.
Have the blue ray. Yes those few seconds at the beginning is ouch on subwoofers. But annoying. Pre order a while ago due 15 July in Canada. Will keep my blue ray copy. Hate when they take out the sound. LoL 🤣 like my needy greedy. Thanks great review, you got me even impatient to receive the 4k copy.
I have the 4k digital version of this movie now I'm curious If I should purchase the physical 4k disk
I really loved this movie! I will have to make the upgrade.
I recommend the manga as well, really amazing art
If it’s in 3D, I usually don’t “upgrade” to 4K. I’m one of the apparently few 3D lovers.
I am too, though in many cases I just end up buying both. I guess studios must love me.
It was good advice to buy the 4K upgrade. The atmos track is a SIGNIFICANT improvement over the blu-ray. Much more detailed and enjoyable
did they upscale the fps? because that was the biggest issue, other than the blur, more frames usually solve a bit of that.
This film kicks so much ass. I'm very happy to hear that this disc is excellent!
The UHD 4K's bass falls off like a cliff at a pitiful 30Hz... and that's not as typo: Thirty-Hertz LMFAO
Nice review Jeff. For me, this is definitely one I'll stick with the 3D Blu-ray (maybe with an Atmos remux): That's where you'll *really* find the "added depth" you refer to on this one..! Cheers.
Loved the video! Speaking of Tom cruise, I can’t decide whether to get the 4K or regular bluray of American made? Is the bluray good or is the 4k that much better?
