PS - The Godfather and The Godfather Part 2 were spots 9 & 10. Part 3 doesn’t make the cut, but it is part of an awesome set!
There are no reviews anywhere online for second sights Amityville 1080p steelbook that came out in the past 4/5 years. I looked at images I took myself to compare to shots of the standard mgm 1080p and I cant tell if it is a new scan by second sight or a repackage. Do you know what the provenance of that release is in regards the source used? I compared it to the vs 4k stills and it looks pretty strong. I got the 4k anyway as it is a great film but I have yet to play it.
The film grain in Dune is actually natural. It was shot digitally but they transferred that to 35mm film and then back to digital to give it a filmic look without giving up the sharpness of digital cameras.
The Batman did the same thing but they actually went to an interpositive and did a bleach bypass on that one.
I hope this trend of digital to film to digital isn't going to continue
@@mrbobo86 I think it works for creating certain looks, but I don’t see it become mainstream. I’m sure it’s not exactly cost efficient
@@Condog I think it's an excellent solution to a very particular problem a certain breed of big budget director and DP might have with the modern digital process when shooting a certain type of movie. Both Dune and Batman were shooting for a filmic look that really fit what the movie was going for, and shooting the two movies entirely on film was simply not logistically feasible. This was the second best solution imo, and something more big budget movies aiming for that modern retro look may emulate going forward.
bleach bypass is the way to go for batman. loved the look of the Snyder Cut and that has a very bleach bypass look
@@KillahMate I'm new to 4k and I don't like film grain. I'm openminded but I don't get why people want film grain when 4k is all about crisper more detailed images.
Thats excellent to hear about Coraline. I qc'd the shout factory 4k files (I work in media services at laika) and I'm so glad people are enjoying this definitive version. Keep your eye out for boxtrolls and kubo coming in February!
The best remaster in 4k Coraline and Paranorman. The best this 2022 i cant wait Kubo and boxtrolls😄
Excited for Kubo for sure
I am super excited for Boxtrolls! That movie has become an unlikely favorite of mine.
My fingers are crossed that we'll get Missing Link down the line too
Bro Kubo getting 4K has me hyped.
Glad to see Coraline made the list. Quite possibly the most impressive 4K disc I own. Army of Darkness was another incredible release from this year, especially given its history on physical media.
Coraline is one of those richly detailed and colorful movies that could be used to convince a naysayer why 4K is worth it. Probably my favorite this year.
Soooo happy to hear this, I watched the movie on blu ray back in October was even blown away by that one, so I traded in the blu and ordered the 4K immediately! Very excited to watch this one
I have never seen Coraline. But, even with UA-cam compression it looked so good I had to immediately order it. Can't wait for it to arrive.
Do you happen to know if Paranorman is of similar quality?? I saw they both got a 4k release and i was thinking of copping both of them. I have paranorman on blu ray, but coraline only on dvd.
coraline was like watching a new movie, the colors and sharpness are phenomenal.
I've got the majority of these discs & I have to say Reservoir Dogs absolutely blew me away with its transfer more than any other.
So happy to see you include "Double Indemnity." It's nice to see more classics from the classic Hollywood era come to 4k this year!
I have Dune, The Batman, and Maverick all in 4K Blu-ray. If I had to pick one……. Probably Dune, because you get the HDR highlights from the sand scenes and the black contrast from the darker scenes at night and looks incredible!!! I highly recommend any of these!!
A 4K release I really liked this year was the restoration of "For All Mankind" from the Criteria collection. It is my favorite documentary film on the Apollo missions to the moon and the new restored version is superb.
I preferred the last waltz but they are both must own
Dune
Reservoir Dogs
The VVitch (Second Sight)
Amityville Horror (Vinegar Syndrome)
Top Gun Maverick
Coraline (Shout Factory)
The Batman
Double Indemnity (Criterion)
The Godfather
The Godfather Part 2
Honorable Mentions: Pulp Fiction, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Godfather Part 3
Great list bro! There’s one that I would make number 11. And that’s Drive (2011) from Second Sight. I paid an arm and a leg to get it shipped from the UK and it was worth it! Phenomenal transfer! And all the extra goodies too were super dope along with the packaging.
Phenomenal work. I'm a new subscriber and I really enjoy what you do. As a collector of physical media, this is one of my new favorite channels
Lmao can't believe I found you here, glad you're on the 4k train too. Thanks for your vids geekdom can't wait for dbs to return
Great list, thank you very much. Here, in Canary Islands or Spain, we don't have a great bunch of 4K releases, but for me, Top Gun: Maverick, Casablanca, Dune and The Batman are absolutely superb. And don't forget Ambulance, The Godfather and Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, fantastic editions too.
Happy Christmas to everybody and greetings from Tenerife, Canary Islands.
This channel is my one stop shop for informative no bullshit reviews of 4K films. Keep up the good work and merry Christmas
Just watched Pulp Fiction on 4K after watching your review and it was incredible. Those black suits! Oh my! So now I’m super pumped to watch Reservoir Dogs.
Loved my Pulp Fiction steelbook. Blew away my old blu ray. Malcom X from criterion looked great too.
Really appreciate you rounding out the year with these videos. Don't get me wrong i try and catch all your reviews throughout the year, but who doesn't love a top 10
The best part of watching these videos over time is that the more i collect, the more i see things i own in the top 10. Really makes me feel like im a collector.
I’ve been waiting for your list Jeff. I look forward to this at the end of every year. Thanks as always for everything you do! I recommend picking up A Walk To Remember from Shot Select. Only blu-ray but a fantastic transfer. The best it’s ever looked! We only had DVD and a 1080I on blu-ray before.
Thanks as always & congrats for all your professional & family accomplishments in 2022!!
Happy New Year
Thank you for the review and importantly also including the sound quality of these discs. Many out there don't consider sound to be as important as the 4K quality. I appreciate that. Stay safe and healthy.
Good list! Kudos Jeff. I’m glad that Criterion and others are pushing for more 4K physical media restorations and releases. I don’t mind owning digitally shot films on digital only, but for classics like the Godfather films that contain heavy film-grain, higher bit-rate 4K discs is the way to go. There’s something about owning physical media and not having to worry about losing your digital library if something unexpected happens.
This is the first video of yours ive seen. I will subscribe and watch more. It's easy to see you are passionate about the subject matter. As a novice but enthusiastic 4K lover I think I will enjoy more of your videos . Great job!
I always really enjoy these videos! Sometimes the stuff you mention I have never heard of before.
Hi Jeff, thanks from France for all the great reviews, you did a really great job and I can't wait to discover more physical media with you in 2023. Have a great, fun and healthy year full of great movies.
Great list and rundown Jeff! I agree about The Godfather restoration - they really did a fantastic job on that upgrade.
Nice list, thanks! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Thanks so much for these valueable info for us physical media fans, Jeff. And I mean not only this new list, i mean your good informative work over years and years 👍. Rock on 🤘
We all love a Personal top 10. thanks so much ❤
U missed something on dune. It was shot digital but the grain is not just added, it was transferred to real film and then digitalised again. It's a new way to add real grain that is used a few times afterwards.
I love Dune so much. The Score. If only it was IMAX on Disc. All the Villeneuve breakdowns of scenes are so incredibly detailed and show love for the books
Well done! Gonna have to check out Coraline. Glad you didn't forget that Dine was released in 2022. Keep up the great work.
Will your “Physical Media Awards” have a survey for your audience to vote on your nominees this year? Great video! Love these year-end videos from you!
I loved how you’re 4K Slipcovers look pristine new!
Yes Jeff! Props for including Double Indemnity. Incredible Disc and movie
Another excellent 4k transfer from Criterion this year was De Palma’s Blow Out. Amazing transfer and the firework sequence at the end.. absolutely jaw dropping in 4K. Brilliant transfer, brilliant film.
Top Gun Maverick’s 4K disc gets props for having a proper animated disc menu. Better than just a still from the movie, that took me by surprise.
The passion you have in describing each movie makes me want to buy them all.... and I am, now. Thank you so much.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the steelbook artwork for Coraline and ParaNorman? Because hot dang they look amazing.
Hi Geoff, great video, in August, I'm buying my very first 4k TV and player, can't wait, I'm getting it from Amazon UK, I really love your channel, I'll also be buying Dune Part 1 and The Dark Knight Trilogy on 4k, so, I'm finally gonna be part of the 4K community, your the best 4k guy on UA-cam, keep up the good work
Great list! Thanks for doing this! I'd love to know the other 4 in your top 15 list. I've been doing more 4K disc reviews on my channel too! You do great work and I always get excited when I have a notification of one of your videos. My wife liked the podcast with your wife on there too!
Some others in a top 15 might include Ambulance, Some Like It Hot, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Pulp Fiction, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - so many good ones this year!
@@JeffRauseo thank you! I finally got my top 10 4k for 2022 uploaded!
Such a good list. So happy to see Double Indemnity here.
Great list! The Piano is a beautiful film and I think the 4k UHD disc from Criterion is excellent.
Just getting into 4k. Love your videos. Many thanks.
Loads of great 4K films this year. A stand out was Turbine Videos 6 disc collection of the frighteners. Other great discs were BFIs Get Carter (Michael Caine), Second Sight’s Drive, Arrow Video’s Robin Hood Prince of thrives, 88 Films’s Cannibal Holocaust .
So many - even from major studios. Fingers crossed for 2023.😅
Great list dude! I totally agree about B&W on 4K. I haven't seen as many new arrivals as you, but I was really impressed with the 4K release of Thriller by Vinegar Syndrome. It looks incredible and comes with an alternate cut of the film on 4K that removes the XXX content (TBH it really drags the film down). As far as The Godfather, while I do like the sharpness of the new transfer, I prefer the 2007 remaster by Robert A. Harris, who followed Gordon Willis' strict notes in order to achieve that iconic color and contrast that I always relate to that film. For me, the sepia-tone emulates the warmth of an older film stock of the period.
Great list Jeff. Only comment I would make is that I think the Atmos soundtrack on Dune is slightly (just slightly) better than Top Gun: Maverick. Otherwise, I think yours is as good a top ten as anybody's! I also really like your honesty that these are YOUR favourite discs from 2022 and you don't try to claim that this is the definitive list from everybody's perspective. That's the way it should be.
Nice list! Agree with most of the selection. Coraline 3D is also amazing and will be my preferred version.
I would say Top Gun Maverick is the best 4K blu ray movie of 2022, because it has replay value, I’ve watched the movie multiple times in theater, because it was playing for months. The actual flight scenes in the movie is what makes it really cool to watch.
Great list. Agree that The Batman was incredible in theaters. 2022 was a great year for 4K, you definitely covered some of my faves!!
Thanks for the list … I definitely need to check out some I have not seen yet :). The title that stuck with me this year was ‘In the Heat of the Night’ on 4K from Kino Lorber … I had not seen the film before so I can’t compare to previous releases.
Good list Jeff. So many great choices this year so definitely hard to narrow it down. I'll add Devil in a Blue Dress by Criterion. Just an excellent transfer.
I have Coraline in Blu-ray and I love it! Is it worth the 4K purchase? I wish you had a side by side like you had for other movies. BTW I really enjoy your videos
Excellent top 10 list. You have great taste in films.
Love the channel! Can’t wait to keep watching in 2023!
Just got The Frighteners box set from Turbine and it looks Amazing!
Definitely one of the best 4k transfers I've ever seen - up there with Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs in terms of picture quality.
Two different cuts of the film on both formats plus an open matte 16:9 fullscreen version, which also looks amazing.
Great video, Merry Christmas !
Some great picks, i own a few of them! Will definitely have to pick some of these up! Thanks for sharing!
Great list of discs to watch now. I recently upgraded my tv to the Hisense U7H 75" with Dolby Vision and HDR10+, but after doing so I realize now that neither the PS5 or Xbox Series X support them for movies on 4k disc, both are just HDR so now I'm wondering if it is worth it to buy a dedicated player that supports Dolby Vision or if it is much different that watching on the consoles.
Love the list brother. Do you know when you might do a movie 4k review for the movie Sound of Metal? Thanks.
Good list Jeff, great job!
Incredible year for 4k. Plenty of great catalogue and new releases. I can’t wait to see what we get in 2023.
Yes, Double Indemnity 4K. Watched this last weekend for the first time in 4K and I was absolutely blown away. It was almost a different picture. Some have issues with this too much digital fiddling (in their opinion), but when it´s done right it can do miracles. Also people who don´t see the benefits of b&w movies being upgraded in 4K I feel very sorry for. Can´t they really not see the difference?
Just wondering which 4k player you have? I'm Currently shopping around. Thanks.
Curious about your movie poster frames. Can you perhaps point me in the direction of where you purchased those?
Great selections too by the way I am in agreement with all of your selections as I of course have them. Keep up the great work
Great list! Couldn't agree more with your thoughts on The Batman movie.
I badly need to get that coraline disc. Those screenshots even with yt compression looked amazing
Get the steelbooks. Totally worth the extra couple bucks. They are fantastic.
The Batman, Top Gun Maverick, and Dune are all so good movies and 4K. Great List 👍
I was one of the people singing Coraline's praises to you on Instagram. I've never seen a 4K film that impressed me as much as this one. It is an absolute must-own, blind-buy worthy title for anyone who wants to be blown away. Also a beautiful and creepy film if you haven't seen it before.
I bought it and paranorman based on a recommendation of the laika films from a friend and yes it was absolutely beautiful. I seen paranorman before and have yet to watch the 4k but I expect it to be just as fantastic. Pre ordered the other 2 already as well 😁
@@Jrizzle7426 Is Paranorman also stop motion animation, or is it just computer animated?
Also, what other two are you referring to? I'm interested.
@@tubinonyou The Boxtrolls and Kubo which come out in February.
Hi there & thank you, your content is excellent. Just bought my first 4k Blu-ray player, still awaiting its arrival in the post, can't wait to start collecting my must have 4k movies, your reviews are great buddy, nice to see the inclusion of B&W films too, thank you & I have liked & subd👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
I see that Robert Meyer Burnett reached out to you for his show. I suggested it in his live show last week! Awesome and can't wait to watch!
Dune and TOp Gun 2 on 4K.are labour's of love, they are dome beautifully.
Huge fan of Criterion 4K and Raging Bull is the most impressive Criterion Collection 4K restoration out there.
The 4k restoration of Pulp Fiction blew my old blu ray away. Keep up the great work. Just got my 4k steelbook of Carrie ,HOD today. Waiting for kino lorbers Eastern promises and Usual Suspects 4k to arrive. Maverick 4k was great, but my favorite 4k was the WOMAN KING. Dune. The Batman were all good too. I also liked WHERE The Crawdads Sing on blu ray too.
Second Sight also released a fantastic 4K set of Drive in 2022 which is easily one of my top 5 discs of all time. Genuinely stunning!
Great list!
Always appreciate your reviews and the thought and care you put into them.
Dune was shot on digital 4.5k & scanned on 35mm so it's more of a hybrid & not artificial grain it's real but took extra steps.
Keep up the good work. And merry Christmas🙂
All good will do
Been waiting for this! I hope you review Wargames. Excellent transfer. I own 7 of the 10 you picked. For my other 3. I would choose Robocop, Tinker Tailor, Soldier Spy and Star Trek 1-6 set.
I’d say Reservoir Dogs is probably my favorite 4K disc of the year. Not only because of the drastic improvement from the Blu-ray, but also because of my low expectations: Quentin Tarantino wasn’t involved in the restoration, Lionsgate doesn’t have the reputation in physical media for the best transfers, and the first time I watched the movie was on HBO Max and it looked so awful with the video quality and colors, so I didn’t think it was even possible to have it look good. I was so relieved that I was wrong when you reviewed it on your channel.
Thank you for these recommendations. Just got Coraline steelbook 4k on Amazon,
Excellent, Great Effort! Loved it!
@Telegrxxm-Me-Films_At_Home. HEARTFELT THANKS!
True Romance would make my list. The sound alone on that disc was so impressive, it really stood out. It looked great too. Dune would definitely make my list too. Last Waltz would make it with an improvement In sound. I bumped the bluray quite a bit and I always had to put it way up. Not with the 4k.
I think true romance was last year but I could be wrong
@@thedarknate0845 the uk release was last year but us release was June 2022
True Romance is on 4k? Sweet!
Fantastic job as always
Good to see Eggers get a rep, would also add The Northman. Looks incredible on disc (also House of the Dragon 4K)
Great list!! Still got my fingers crossed for Point Break & Dark City on 4K in 2023…🤓🤞🎈
Great list Jeff. Mine is pretty similar. Maybe I Know What You Did Last Summer would have been in the list
Have you seen Fright Night on 4k? it came out in October. I got the Steelbook as an added bonus. It looks so good, and there's a huge list of extras. Even script reads from some of the original cast. They went all out with the special features. And I believe it includes an upgraded soundtrack to Dolby Atmos.
That is also a great release yeah!
Ahhhh the only thing I look forwards for in December… these types of videos
"Nope" was incredible too; amazing image with Imax scenes with a full blown Atmos track.
Christmas Vacations also looked like a new movie.
Nope deserves best picture quality of the year IMO. Top Gun Maverick in second place.
Star Trek The Motion Picture: The Director's Edition would be on my Top 10. What they did with this was amazing
Great list bro! I would like to see you review ip man and 48 hours/another 48hrs 4K movie with Eddie murphy and nick nolte
I tweeted this earlier, but dollar tree is starting to sell 4k movies. I grab em when I see them. Also, I just watched Wayne's world 4k. They restored the no stairway audio that was (I guess) only used in theaters.
Jeff, thanks for bringing Coraline 4K to my attention - I have the 3D version which is amazing apart from it is 1 stop too dark wearing 3D shutter glasses. Hopefully the 4K version gets over the darkness problem.
Good list. I actually have most of the releases included. Might have to pick up The Amityville Horror though.
Awesome list!!!
Proud to say i have most of these :D Great video dude.
That’s awesome to hear about Coraline. My wife LOVES this movie, and even the Blu-ray looked amazing on my OLED screen, so I can’t wait to see how this looks!
Happy New Year!🎉
great list. i got the Godfather boxset but I still need to check it out. i'm backed up on new 4k blurays.
I have never actually watched The Godfather. I have had plenty of opportunity to but just never got round to it. Buying it in 4k is on my new year's resolution todo list
Any word about a 4k 1959 Ben-Hur in the works?
Also, is there any chance that the BFI version of the 1928 film Napoleon will be released for region A players?
Thanks, I am a very new member and hope that I am using the appropriate forum for general quest.
Great video as always.
Interesting to hear you say you thought Reservoir Dogs was a bigger upgrade than Pulp Fiction. I personally would have flipped it. Pulp Fiction blew my mind in 4K, it is an excellent restoration and everything looked crisp. Reservoir Dogs' restoration is excellent too, but I was content with whatever Netflix had it on, and watching it on disc wasn't a huge jump for me. I'm mostly glad they printed it in 4K just so I can have a personal copy and don't need to rely on streaming services to keep it on their site. Great vid man! Subbed and I'm excited to hear your opinion on future releases before I buy em
I feel the same about Pulp Fiction in 4K. It looked just as good if not better than when I saw it in Theaters back in 1995.
Now I just want The Crow in 4K
You said “black and white restoration” and I thought for sure it was gonna be Casablanca. Definitely gonna have to check out Double Indemnity
