Unless the audio has been fixed, it’s not a proper release. They used a different, inferior recording for the soundtrack than what’s supposed to be there and it’s mixed in pretty badly, with many cues being wrong.
I think it's for completion sake but makes me upset when movies like superman 4 get 4k but a movie like Aliens doesn't. Of course I know that's up to James Cameron but still lol
The DD 5.1 from the original 70mm Dolby 6-track is nice. John Williams' music, especially during the opening titles, has a reverberant quality to it and there isn't the rapid reduction in level before the "A Richard Donner Film" title that plagues the Atmos mix. Otherwise, I much prefer the Atmos mix. John Williams' spectacular music is dynamically spread out to all channels and the opening title swoosh effects are unbelievable to listen to. It's nice to have both mixes on the same disc to compare.
Great review Jeff while there is some issues with this 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc Box Set they are the best the Superman 1-4 Christopher Reeve films have ever looked on any format. I am just frustrated a little bit the 1st film Superman The Movie didn’t get a new 4K UHD transfer and also Superman 2 and Superman 4 - The Quest For Peace had issues with the sound mixes and the music track from Superman 4 is a different mix taken from the German release. So like the Rocky 4K UHD Blu-ray Box Set their is QC Quality Control issues. I have the Steelbooks box set of these releases. Overall a great set.
The unbelievable fact that there are 4K releases for “III” and “IV” actually pales in comparison to the fact that “The Donner Cut” exists. I’ll never watch the theatrical release of “Superman II” again.
I think with S:TM (and S2 to a lesser extent) Geoffrey Unsworth's cinematography is very very soft focus so I think that accounts for why there's such grain visibility and less fine detail.
I brought the set today, and I must say the 4K quality was stellar across all the movies (especially 1 and 2). The audio was also pretty good as well but I did prefer the Original Theatrical track for authenticity reasons.
Any word yet as to whether these will get individual releases? Superman III and IV just aren't worth getting to me, and I've got the previous release of Superman I. Really just looking for II in both versions.
“And over the last few years we have heard a lot about something called ‘family values’. And like many of you, I have struggled to figure out what that means. And since my accident, I've found a definition that seems to make sense. I think it means that we're all family. And that we all have value.” Christopher Reeve, speaking at the Democratic National Convention in 1996. What a Super Man.
My other complaint about this box set Is you would think Warner brothers would have released the television cut on 4K with this release To make it more appealing to those of us that a purchase the first film already.
Your review of the first one almost stopped me from buying it a couple of years ago. I'm a huge superman fan though, so I bought it anyway when I saw a good deal on it. It still is one of the most disappointing 4k movies I've ever picked up. I was bummed to hear that this box set had the same one in it.. Oh well... great video man... awesome thumbnail.
Ive been wanting to see u review this 4k box set for months! I definitely wa t this collection so badly! I dont have have Christopher reeves supermarket movies , so this would be great to have
If you watch the 4K version of Superman 2-4, you get the original version of Warner bros from 1972-1983 in the second and third while, fourth is the 1984 logo.
Great review but I'm passing on this. No Extended TV cut for part one, new glitches were introduced, missing the 1978 5.1 audio track, missing hours of special features. I'll stick with the blu-rays and DVDs. And the individual artwork for the less expensive set is terrible.
Jeff you were totally incorrect when you said the 5.1 remix is a fan favourite, actually it is the opposite, purists like myself absolutely hate the 5.1 mix, it is a bastardisation and butchering of the soundtrack. That remix was not how the film was supposed to sound and needs to sod off in my and many other purists opinions. The original mono track is the superior track. Also your review was not detailed enough to mention that Superman II was colourised by an inexperienced colourist, which is why heavy DNR usage has made Chris Reeves face look like wax in certain scenes, and also at the end of that movie when Superman flies across the Earth, looks at the camera and flies off, there is a shot that is not the correct aspect ratio. The first Superman 4k release was actually a poor transfer, the scene when Superman is revealed for the 2nd time is overly dark as shown in Oliver Harpers review of that transfer. You also failed to mention or probably didn't notice that the opening of Superman IV's music was taken from the wrong source, hence it sounds different this was a bodge up by WB. The only decent transfer out of this collection is Superman III, but even then certain whites have been replaced with Cyan, for example when he is carrying the ice, it is supposed to be bright white, yet in the 4k the colourist changed the ice to faint cyan. I will never buy this 4k release, get the transfers right then it will get my money.
Crazy how were talking about colour being off and all this after a brand new restoration and release of a 4k collectors set, And get the Dvd tin collectors edition with all the movies in doesn't have any colour issues whatsoever, And you get superman Returns included, Yes the image quality isn't as clear and the Audio isn't lossless but id take that every day over someone increasing contrast and racking up the colour palet so everyone can talk about how wonderful the HDR is and how it pops and all the other narratives people like to spin, It's all about making money and in my eyes it's not bloody needed
It sucks that WB chose not to remaster the special edition in 4K. That one at least has involvement from Richard Donner and creative consultant Tom Mankiewicz in the commentary track.
Regarding the lack of Dolby Vision on the sequels-all the films have Dolby Vision on the iTunes releases. All the films also have all the extras from the set as well. It does seem to be an ongoing trend for Dolby Vision to be for streaming only for both Warner’s & Disney.
Disney does not want to pay for a DV license for disc. They are cheap and that's why most of their films get a BD-66 disc as well. Avatar 1 & 2 get a BD-100, but not to pump up the video bitrate... they just crammed more audio tracks on the disc. With one or two language tracks, it still would have probably fit on a BD-66 given their stated press release bitrates... that's one reason they suck so badly. WB is pretty inconsistent about what gets DV and what doesn't.
For £138 on Amazon I would expect Christopher Reeve to personally deliver it to me. Sorry but that price is INSANE. I think I paid about £20-30 for the bluray release back in 2011
I will pass on this! The first 4K movie “Superman the movie”is one of the worst 4K transfer movies I’ve ever owned. This should have gotten a new 4k transfer update for this box set release. Hope they reconsider in the future for a possible buy.
Here because I was seeking out Superman 1 and 2 - saw what looks to be a great 4K standalone release for 1, but couldn’t find a region 1 Superman 2 4K release, so may end up splurging on this (especially if 3 and 4 are high quality restorations with good special features)
There is supposedly an improved 4k video master for Superman: The Movie with higher quality film source material utilized, but WB decided to just port the previous video file from the last 4k disc instead.
Good review - i would buy it but no Superman Returns. I am not to care about who directed/starred and are creeps, therefore this set nor any Superman fan should think its complete or acceptable to exclude 2006's Returns when in the past it always has been included, Its also much, much better than 3 and quest for peace.
Richard Donner was filming 1 and 2 together but got sacked halfway through Superman 2. The Donner cut has lots of different scenes and a different beginning and ending. Well worth a watch.
I got the dvd set with the bonus disc, put the 2 bonus disc I didn’t have in a spare 2 disc case then that case the up in the sky case, supergirl blu ray and steel dvd all fit in the sets inner sleeve and put them all in the metal case to set beside the 4k steelbook set and the blu ray steelbook of Superman returns(I did keep the blu rays for all 3 alternate cuts of the first Superman) just hope that someday will get a blu of Steel or a steelbook of supergirl but that will likely never happen😢
Hey Jeff, still a relatively new fan. I bought the Superman II/II: Richard Donner Cut Steelbook a few weeks ago, and as I went through the movies decided to just get the full 5 film (non-steel book) box set. The none steenbook version. I am not one to keep multiple copies of the exact same media, I'll keep extended cuts and theatrical but not the exact prints. So my question, should I sell off my steelbook which I just bought for $28 or should I sell off the non-steel book versions of the films from the box set? I'm torn between keeping the set complete or keeping the superior case for the best of the Superman films.
Thanks for the review! I wish they would put out Superman II w/ Donner cut as a separate release, because I think I would only bite on the first 2 for a 4k upgrade from the blu-ray
Donner cut is an interesting watch just for the added scenes/alternate takes, but it's just way too incomplete, and too much of a hodgepodge to surpass the theatrical imo. Also think it's a bit overstated of it being more serious as there's some really weak humor added back in by Donner himself.
@@ChuckM0503 That's what I'd heard before seeing it, but I honestly didn't agree when I saw it. Felt like a complete movie to me and they hid the seams surprisingly well. It's just so much more well-paced and I found the tone and humour is a massive improvement over the theatrical. The colour grade also seems closer to the original, I didn't like the way the theatrical looked. Just better in every way in my opinion.
I bought the steelbooks. I’m a HUGE Superman fan. One of the only gripes I have is that Superman IV looks SO GOOD that the special effect stand out more. In a BAD way. On the blu rays the bad special effects didn’t bother me quite as much. But now that the picture looks SO GOOD, you can REALLY REALLY tell how bad the “completed” effects are. The effects looked fine on the other movies. Also on Superman IV something seems off with the music. The music sounded substantially better on the blu ray disk. Overall I think all the movies benefited greatly from the improvement aside from Superman IV. Some aspects of Superman IV look AMAZING. While the special effects actually look worse than ever. I wish they could do some improvement of that movie. Go back and improve some of the special effects and actually complete some of the incomplete effects. Also add back in all the deleted footage they have. That movie has a special place in my heart. It was the first movie I ever remember seeing in the movie theater. My dad bought me a Superman comic before the movie and then we went to see it. As a 5 year old kid I LOVED it. Also side note….I wonder when Superman Returns will be released on 4K
You have to realize that during that time era when these Superman movies were made, the technology wasn't advanced as it now, and the special effects are going to look outdated because its old tech. The 4K is only going to make those imperfections more prominent due to the higher resolution. It's been 45 years since the first Superman movie was made, and Warner Brothers are not going to redo the special effects in all the Superman movies. They're not going to do that.
It's not the best possible picture quality is it though if the colour has been tampered with and changed to give a more brighter looking film, Leave the colour timing alone and clean up the image, So many studios thinking we want vivid colours on a 1980s film it's crazy
So I hated the first release 4k because everything was super dark and if you watch the 4k vs thr blu-ray you can see Otis in the back of the van on the blu ray but not on the 4k. So you saying they did not change that on the new release?
Superman the movie has a higher bit rate to the 2018 4k release. They removed a 5.1 track and added back the original track giving more space to sharpen the image. The extended cut was i believe not a theatrical cut its 1 reason its not there plus of course the cost to revisit. Great video just to note digital codes are country specific. No codes in the uk again
How is the picture quality between the first 4K print and this new release of Superman 1? I think you mentioned 'it's the same' but did you do any direct side-by-sides?
I have been following you Jeff for a few years and want to thank you for all your detailed reviews.. my son and i appreciate you. I did have a question regarding UHD digital quality vs disc. In my digital library i have HDX quality, right now theres a sale for $30 to upgrade to UHD, in your opinion, is it worth the upgrade in the digital stream? Thank you in advance my friend. Greetings from California.
I have a question not related to this review. Why is it that most movies have Dolby vision and not hdr10 Plus. I have a handful of movies that take advantage of HDR 10 +. You would think where there's no licensing fee it's free to use that it would be more popular and more appealing to Studios. As far as I can see or read online there is not a huge difference between the both. Maybe it's just me but I just thought hdr10 Plus would have excelled more. I guess it would make it very difficult for studios to include both on the movie? Unfortunately I have a Samsung TV which I love but as you all know only supports hdr10 and no Dolby vision. I guess next time around when it's time to upgrade a TV I'll get one that supports both. But I was just curious on what you all think about the two formats. Jeff feel free to weigh in here😉
@@JeffRauseo Many thanks Jeff..!! There's a UA-cam channel that's posted a comparison clearly claiming they're different..!?? Will forward link later.. Thank you again
I'm more of a Batman guy like yourself Jeff so will probably buy the first 2 movies individually as Superman 3 and 4 are pretty poor fare. I'd love WB to put together a deluxe Batman Box Set together some day along the lines of the Superman Steelbook Set. Here's hoping! Who is your favourite Batman by the way?
@@JeffRauseo I concur. Its a shame we never got to see Ben direct his own Batman movie as was originally planned. A decent script may well have given the best movie Batman ever both from an acting and directed perspective
Is the first movie still really grain heavy? The original movie is by far my favorite, but I never got the 4K version because I heard it was super grainy. I don't like it when movies use excessive DNR to smooth out the image, but I also don't like it when there's too much grain either. I really need a nice balance, and I've heard the first movie doesn't have that unfortunately.
@@DIMEDAMAGE That's too bad. Looks like I'll have to skip over this set if the best movies of the bunch (the original and its sequel) are that heavily grained.
@Flims at home. I believe the transfer Of Superman 1 in the Boxset is slightly different to the 2017 release..'@mymoonization' has comparing Screen shots to Show this is the case.
The lack of the Special Edition of Superman 1 alone makes this a no-go for me. Plus missing all of those special features? Pffft. What a bust. I was very tempted to snap this up. But the fact they're ignoring my preferred cut and leaving out features is really disappointing. I may just buy Superman 2, Donner Cut, and Supes 3 4K separately. I'm a Supes 3 apologist, so having in it 4K will be nice.

I'm amazed that we live in a world where a movie as universally panned as Superman 4 can still get a proper 4K release lol.

The brand and character recognition is worth more than the movie itself is why it is the way it is.
Don’t throw out Superman: The Movie in the box set. It’s on the disc at a higher bit rate (higher quality). That’s why the 5.1 mix was dropped.
It’s really not any different. A 5.1 lossy mix doesn’t take up any real space.
Superb video! Not entirely a bad upgrade from the BD to 4K. I just wish they included the Special Edition of Superman: The Movie and Superman Returns.

I did have a question regarding UHD digital quality vs disc. In my digital library i have HDX quality, right now theres a sale for $30 to upgrade to UHD, in your opinion, is it worth the upgrade in the digital stream? Thank you in advance my friend. Greetings from California.
Lol love the thumbnail
Jeff feel free to weigh in here😉
Supergirl getting snubbed again
I wanted the steel book set but idk if I want to pay 198 bucks for it
Do you know why Superman Returns wasn't included in the set like the superb DVD set??
2 words: Kevin Spacey
Great video as always Jeff.🎉. Please can you confirm if the Box Set version of #1 is a different Visual-Transfer to the Stand-alone 4K.?? Thank you
It’s the same
@@JeffRauseo Many thanks Jeff..!!
There's a UA-cam channel that's posted a comparison clearly claiming they're different..!??
Will forward link later.. Thank you again
The American version sometimes is different then the Australian version.
US only 😢 everyone in the UK just gonna cry
I'm more of a Batman guy like yourself Jeff so will probably buy the first 2 movies individually as Superman 3 and 4 are pretty poor fare. I'd love WB to put together a deluxe Batman Box Set together some day along the lines of the Superman Steelbook Set. Here's hoping! Who is your favourite Batman by the way?
Favorite Batman is probably Bale/Keaton! But favorite Bruce Wayne is Affleck.
@@JeffRauseo I concur. Its a shame we never got to see Ben direct his own Batman movie as was originally planned. A decent script may well have given the best movie Batman ever both from an acting and directed perspective
I saw Keaton in Beetlejuice the year before Batman so I could never buy him in Batman. But I did really like him in Birdman, his best role.
I have this box 📦 set but I haven't played then yet 👊👊📽
Is the first movie still really grain heavy? The original movie is by far my favorite, but I never got the 4K version because I heard it was super grainy. I don't like it when movies use excessive DNR to smooth out the image, but I also don't like it when there's too much grain either. I really need a nice balance, and I've heard the first movie doesn't have that unfortunately.
superman 2 is a grainfest also.superman 3 looks the best
@@DIMEDAMAGE That's too bad. Looks like I'll have to skip over this set if the best movies of the bunch (the original and its sequel) are that heavily grained.
Superman 4..."is a little tough".
Can't wait to get it. When it come out??
ID JUST GET 1 AND 2.
good review
This set is 150 Euros in the EU (not steelbooks). Outrageous overpricing that won't help the format grow.
I think this should be at a 69.99 price point. $90 is too high.
Agreed. Waiting on a price drop.
In Europe its 150 Euros!
Do you think they will come out with the individual slips like they did with Batman?
@@jimroscoviusslipcovers if you look in the video he has a stand-alone Superman 4k Blu-ray that has a slipcover on it
@@jimroscovius I always prefer the slipcovers because they have great artwork and they look nice on my shelf
@@jimroscovius That's crazy I wish they would put effort in to all slipcovers
Where is "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman: The Musical"???
Superman 1 is ok, they fall off a cliff after that…nostalgia is a wonderful thing…heard the best 4k is the unwatchable Superman 4… i will pass.
@Flims at home.
I believe the transfer Of Superman 1 in the Boxset is slightly different to the 2017 release..'@mymoonization' has comparing Screen shots to Show this is the case.
I've Been waiting to see if it's worth another purchase.
Thanks for sharing
Just tired the links in the description all US only too 😢 hey Jeff could we get some love for your international views please
