I've long imagined that Krosis, though a devout dragon priest, was a man who spent a great deal of his time among nature and the dragons out in the wilderness. On another note I also have a theory that the wooden mask is Vahlok the Jailor's mask, as it is used to get into the sealed room of labyrinthian, and (once you have all the dragon priest masks of course) allows you to acquire the sealed dragon priest mask.
@@sparksy6273 I think that the one locked away is Miraak's original mask, maybe Vahlok managed to take it, and that Vahlok is jailing the mask so when Miraak comes back he'd have to defeat all the dragon priests in order to get it back. I would say that Krosis (sorrow) was named so because either he had lost his people (note that he doesn't have any followers along with no temple) or that he was the hitman of the cult and basically the spy (hence the sneak perks). However, he is incredibly powerful so he could've been the warlord of the cult and whomever came to cross his armies would have nothing but sorrow after Krosis was done with them (personification of the word "Sorrow"). This is pure speculation as I have nothing to base it on but the other two perks of the mask, but Krosis being in the open wilderness instead of a temple always seemed to fith with the ranger/alchemist view of him I had. The funny thing about Otar the Mad is that in ESO you can overhear Sheogorath during a quest in Northern Elsweyr he mentions Otar, my guess is that Sheogorath is the reason Otar went mad.
@@Frank_Ditch Yes, the original Sheogorath had his curse broken and reverted to being Jygalaag. The Hero of Kvatch was the last one holding the Staff of Sheogorath, which probably slowly turned them from a mortal into a true Daedric Prince.
Krosis was in love with a dragon, however they died and with their death all of his wants. So his last task to his followers before they became free was to place his tomb near the words of power his love had made. Forever guarding their legacy from thieves and unwanted guests. Alone for his failure to protect his love and master, forever sorrowful and full of remorse. BUT THATS JUST A THEORY A LAME THEORY THANKS FOR READING!!!!!
I remember when I first played skyrim. Found Krosis by accident. Every playthrough would have me going there, kiting rocks, and using 400 plus arrows to take him down, and get that sweet sweet mask.
Probably a stretch, but I think Krosis earned his mask by being the best at infiltrating the ranks of the Dragon Cult's enemies, destroying them from within. His "Sorrow" being that he lived two "half-lives" instead of one full, always keeping a distance from everyone in order to do his job. His use of a fire staff and ice magic might also serve to show his "dual-nature".
I always found him difficult. I find not going too close to the word wall until I defeat the dragon first helps. Krosis will not come out of his tomb until you are close to the word wall.
Lol same here. I remember my first run almost 12 years ago, spent 12 hours non-stop exploring. I completed the dragon bridge bounties, saw the dragon and said what fun before I Finnish today. I slayed the beast by daggers and thunder. Off to claim my prize at the thu'm epatath krosis rose I did battle believing he was just a draguer who doesn't want to walk. I was then one shot of the Cliff by his spells only to realise I hadn't saved any of my data the whole session and my last quick save was a hour after starting. Lol
The dragon priests were always my favourite part of Skyrim... They scared me so much and were so powerful but I was absolutely obsessed with them!! My biggest goal on every playthrough was always to collect all of their masks.
In the anniversary upgrade for Skyrim SE on Xbox one (idk about pc) there is Bloodchill Manor where you have a place to display all of the dragon priest masks
Theory on Krosis 'Sorrow' or 'Apologies' He isolated himself as a form of self atonement/absolution for some form of failure (Zul Mey Gut means "Voice Fool Far", so telling of his foolishness publically) and/or as a punishment by his dragon masters for, again, some form of failure. The 'Throw Voice' dragon shout accompanying his tomb being representative of the message, mockingly, left behind by his entombment. The shout is also more expensive to cast if not used in-full (30s vs 15s vs 5s cooldowns) which gives me the impression this is a story best told in full to portray the message and accompanying lessons fully (which is ironic considering we have nothing concrete to retell). The mocking nature is further reiterated by the voice lines this shout produces. Normally I wouldn't assume a direct association for any other word wall shouts with the dungeons accompanying dragon priest, but given its the only 3-word 1-wall shout in the Skyrim worldspace/game that comes to mind, I figured there is contextual significance. The translation on the word wall (the full shout's 3 walls being hidden in game files vs the in-game 'condensed' wall; take that for what you will) may be some form of representative retelling of that failure; seems common within ancient Nordic storytelling/pantheon (at least thats the impression I always get myself) so I made the jump on that basis.
Itss funny that Krosis has a dragon prottecting him, I'd think it would need to be the other way around, Krosis protecting the dRagon cause man that guy is hard as FUCKKKKK
A little tip about Volsung: You can skip his dungeon and get his mask as early as level 1. Every time I've gone to face him, he has some odd behavior where if I start hitting him with a weapon or punch as soon as he comes out of his coffin, he just stands there and takes it without attacking. Easy way to level your weapon of choice early on, AND a very versatile Mask as early as you want! Oh and also a word of Whirlwind Sprint.
I figure that Dukaan, being in solstheim, was one of the skaal, who are devout worshipers of kyne (by whatever name they call her) and he left them to pursue greater power.
@@placeholder2586 I think they call her the All-Maker being the nature deity in TES lore, just like Akatosh/Alkosh is the same deity just different names.

@@lasagnasux4934 no its not akatosh Not kyne Not dibbela Not mara Not talos The all maker is its own thing in skall religion and it controls everything
I like to think Krosis had the slightest bit of sorrow for his deeds as a dragon priest and have isolated himself as some kind of attunement or something like that. I have no lore to back this, it's just something i like to think
I accidentally stumbled across Krosis at the beginning of my very first game....only because I saw a dragon and decided to go kill it. His mask helped so much earlier on in the game.
based on where he is buried and the word wall next to him that reads (translated) "Modir the Far raised (this) stone in memory of his brother, Oskar the Fool, whose voice was weak and not (the) mighty Thu'um of his clan." I think Krosis is Modir, and his (likely younger) brother was so weak in the voice compared to his older Dragon Priest brother that his shame led to the death of himself at the hands of other dragon priests and left Modir to take on the new name, Krosis
Theory time. So considering they were once Skyrim's ancient jarls we can say: Rahgot - ancient ruler of the Rift Otar- ancient ruler of the Reach Volsung - ancient ruler of Haafingar Vokun - ancient ruler of Hjaalmarch Morokei - ancient ruler of Bromjunaar (Old Whiterun's capital) Krosis- ancient ruler of the pale Hevnoraak - ancient ruler of Falkreath Miraak - ruler of Solstheim Now for Nahkriin I would say he was probably the ancient ruler of Eastmarch , giving the deep connection of the ancient nords with dragons and his connection with Alduin. Konahrik was meant to be the High King ,and maybe the ancient ruler of Winterhold, giving that it was the 1st capital of Skyrim and there's this theory about him being Shalidor Of course he could've also been the ruler of Eastmarch , with his temple Revahkeim being just up the mountain (although that is a mod and not canon).
On every single play through, I always take a moment to lay a flower on Valdar's throne as acknowledgement and remembrance for his centuries of vigil and sacrifice before I leave Valthume.
Just found this channel. You did an awesome job on the video. In a lot of cases it's difficult to get a full picture as many of the Priests don't have a backstory given at all, and the ones that do don't have one that's fleshed out. Even Miraak suffers for this and he was the antagonist in the Dragonborn DLC. One theory I saw regarding Otar the Mad was that his madness could have been caused by Hevnoraak and his mind control experiments. Krosis could have been a thief or an assassin for the Dragon Cult. Another possibility is that he could have also been the sole survivor when his followers were attacked during the aftermath of the Dragon War. I always thought that Vahlok-at the time he fought Miraak-was Konahrik, but when he took up his vigil waiting for Miraak's return he gave up the mask of the Warlord (which also explains why he doesn't have a mask). It strikes me that the Konahrik mask is one that would be reserved for the most powerful Dragon Priest. We know that Vahlok was at least on par with Miraak in terms of raw power-their fight according to the account in _The Guardian and the Trator_ lasted for three days before he got the upperhand-and he didn't have any perks gained from reading Herma-Mora's Black Books or a Dovahsil, things that the Konahrik mask could have compensated for.
Tbh, I've never considered Miraak to be entirely evil. Antagonistic towards the LDB and with an ego bigger than Tamriel, yes. But not wholly evil. We don't know why he turned on the dragons, but we do know he turned against Mora because he wanted to be free. I also disagree with Nahkriin being Alduin's personal priest, but that's because I like to think Konahrik took that role with Nahkriin being his/her student, taught to take up his/her role upon his/her death which happened very close to Alduin's defeat against the three Nord heroes, hence why his mask is not unique and why we never faught Konahrik. Konahrik wasn't able to become a lich because he/she did not preform the rites to do so, either convinced his/her mask made him/her immortal or because he/she died too soon. Thus, he/she does not guard Sovngarde. But those are just my own little headcanons.
Well, Dragons were the Overlords of Men. We dont know how the social structure was but while they had humans that would handle all the other affairs, dragons must have somewhat shown that they are more importants and stand over all men. And Miraak learns that he is Dragonborn, he has the soul of a dragon. There is your answer. Because he is a dovah, he has the instinct to dominate. Coupled with living his whole life beforehand as a servant under dragons claw, its self explaining why he rose up against them. Maybe same as with Mora. He wants to have fate in his own hand.
I don’t consider Morokei necessarily evil either. No claw door sealing him or coffin, he was prob doing his own thing for millennia and acquired the staff (the staff only appears randomly and he must’ve found it). He also somehow knows cyrodilic when he’s from a time he shouldn’t, as most draugr/priests… so he also was gaining knowledge after death. Savos and his colleagues kinda just busted in his home and paralyzed him for a century. I’d be mad and have beef with Aren too.
hevnoraak, moreki and konahrik i think are my favorite.......hevnoraak has my favorite temple and quest.....controlled an army even serving him in death, you have to destroy at least 2 or all 3 of his vies of blood to weaken him and hes still possibly the strongest priest to fight...........volsung was quite powerful to...vahlak the jailer seems good to...duukan and zakrosis as well.....
Amazing vid!! I adore lore videos and videogame lore itself so I am happy to see you dip a bit into it here! You did a very excellent job with this one. It was very well polished. I liked the way you messed with your voice depending on what the screen showed, it was a nice touch. As always I look forward to your next video and to what you do next! Thank you for the entertainment, it was just what I needed today.
Awesome, glad you enjoyed it! I definitely took my time with it, and glad to see its paying off :) I myself was never into the lore when the game first released, but my friend was. I never really understood why he was so fascinated lol, but after all these years, now I'm beginning to see why! I'll definitely be making more lore based videos in future having had such fun learning about these priests. Thanks again David for your support, it's really appreciated! 🧙♂️
Great video! I've been waiting for someone to cover all the dragon priests. It has never been done. Also btw all the little sound effects really made me laugh. Probably better than being scared haha. Very unique and distinctive aswell. I like this editing style.
Thank you! They have actually been covered by some other creators before, but I thought I'd throw my WelshWizard spin on it 🧙♂️ The intention was horror, but glad I could make you smile lol :)
I was just expecting a lore video. This was basically horror stories. The editing and effects were well done and creeper me out while watching something that normally wouldn't disturb me. Well done
I think Morokei was a right hand man, or the "jarl"'s wizard for the clan, because his tomb is held in Labrinyth, which guards the last mask and the wooden mask, steals magicka for his own, and has his own special "key".
I believe vokun was the leader of a secret police that would root out dissent in the dragon cult and their slaves. After the banishment of alduin his secret police kept operating but now gathering scrolls and treasure for vokun so he could gain power. But as all things do they eventually died so he raised them as drauger so they could continue to serve him. This explains his name as well as the scrolls in his tomb.
*Unprecedented Video Quality* I've missed you, Welsh. *This really Took me by surprise, How fantastic you did this!* Edit: What!? The most likes I've ever gotten!! Thanks! Love you guys. Let's unite under (Welsh) Wizardry! *Cringe*
Is anyone else wondering how the Staff of Magnus ended up in Morokei's hands when it was seen out in Tamriel during ESO and TES III? My best theory is that one of Savos' fellow students brought it to Labyrinthian and tried to use it against the priest, only to die and have it land in his hands.
You make such great videos! The editing and narration is fantastic. It's only a matter of time until you become one of the bigger channels on Skyrim youtube.
My theory of Zahkriisos is that He was not in fact a member of the Bloodskal Clan himself, but was in fact an ancient enemy of theirs. Perhaps a champion of their family destroyed him with the heirloom blade and had him buried beneath their Barrow, as a means to posthumously ensure He could not rise again to aid in Miraak's ascension. Regrettably their names and deeds were lost to time, consigned to be forgotten unlike Vahlok.
Yeahhh Azidall! My favorite priest by far, and in my experience the deadliest. His unique spell (which is literally the fire breath thuum but as a 1 handed spell (also has no cast time)) is devastating for anyone without decent magic resist. And I usually play dunmer. I also usually carry his boots because water walking is rather nice, and almost every heavy armor character I play ends up wearing that mask.
This was amazing! The effects, sounds, overall editing was great! You did a great job to telling their stories and painting them as the scary guys they are. When the first story was being told and the scary flashing editing happened I was like, oh this is gonna be spooky and I'm here for it!
That voice effect while emerging from the water was amazing and gave me a good laugh, such small details like that just show how much care and detail you put into your videos.

So I'd always wondered about how Krosis is able to be the lichlike being the rest of the priests are without having draugr to give him their power. That's what the draugr do in the tombs for the dragon priests: they keep it "alive."
Great video, good clips, very informative content. And a bit of humour too. Great that you included *timestamps* in the description, very useful for later reference.
You did a really great job with this video. I had no idea what the back stories of the dragon priest were other than... well they were priest for the Dragons. The stories behind them are genuinely disturbing and somber and with the way you narrated and edited the video it gave me chills.
People of Haafingar sure love the red colour. The empire flags are red , Elisif's crown got red gems , Victoria's wedding dress is red, the guards shields and outfits are red , even the dragon priest's mask next door, Volsung, is red 😆
We know Volsung was a khajiit not a nord. Bethesda released a bunch of dragonpriest merch showing their faces when alive and he was a white furred khajiit with yellow eyes.
I always felt that two most senior Dragon Priests were Nahkriin and Morokei due to their positions as Protectors of Skuldafn and Bromjunaar respectively
Yet again I am shown that channel size has nothing to do with channel quality. Seriously what a gem! And this was from 2 years ago?? Very excited to delve into your videos, cheers 🎉
I'm only 5 minutes in and the quality of the video is immense, I'm totally immersed in the story that the wizard is telling us To think that this content creator only has 18K subscribers is tragic, he deserves so much more exposure and I hope that he gets the following he deserves.

I like to imagine that Krosis felt he had a better chance to be left alone and with his loot if his body was harder to find. No fancy tomb or any other thing to tempt other thieves to him. The word wall wouldn't be of much interest to many, as only a handful of people in Tamriel could use them and few could read it, so he showed his dragon support without all the fanfare by having his tomb be beside one that was secluded and harder to reach, but looking simple and plain, nothing out of the ordinary to tip off anyone. Exactly like a master thief would.
this was so cool! i’ve been playing skyrim for yeaaarssss but never got much deeper into either of the dlc than their main storylines and any side quests you bump into along the main story so i genuinky had never even heard of or encountered most of the last few priests you talked about! makes me wanna open the game back up and go through those dlcs more thoroughly lol
one of the wierdest things about krosis is that there's a dragon just hanging out over his word wall in the middle of nowhere. maybe that dragon knew Krosis, and was there to either lament his death or ensure it?
3:13 Reverb here sounds a bit off, the trail dies whenever there's a cut in the narration. You just need to apply the reverb effect after you trim the slience to avoid cutting off the trails. Really enjoying the content though!
Thanks man! I realised how to fix it after the vid - I can either apply the reverb to the master track, or I can nest all the cuts together and then apply the effect to the one track... always getting 1% better 👍 thanks for watching and for the tip :)

yeah sheograth literally talks about being their for the events of oblivion and martin becoming Akatosh
Krosis is the most difficult Dragon Priest I've ever faced lol. Took me nearly 10 minutes to defeat him.
Yep, he's a challenging priest and the dragon doesn't help lol
I always found him difficult. I find not going too close to the word wall until I defeat the dragon first helps. Krosis will not come out of his tomb until you are close to the word wall.
@@doctorlefthandthread that's a good strategy!
For me he glitched and just stood there while I killed him
@@Person-et7bn Yeah this has happened to me also.
These are magnificent Undying Liches' back story stories! Nice Job!
Thank you!
@@theWelshWizard You are welcome.
I remember the first time I came across Krosis. I had never seen a Dragon Priest before, so I thought I could take him.
I was horribly wrong.
Ahhh, good. I thought I was the only one. It's that damn staff of his that always hurt the most!
Me too man…
The dragon with him makes it worse

Theory on Krosis 'Sorrow' or 'Apologies'
He isolated himself as a form of self atonement/absolution for some form of failure (Zul Mey Gut means "Voice Fool Far", so telling of his foolishness publically) and/or as a punishment by his dragon masters for, again, some form of failure.
😂 if you know.. you know!
They don't worship kyne though?
@@placeholder2586 I think they call her the All-Maker being the nature deity in TES lore, just like Akatosh/Alkosh is the same deity just different names.

I like to think Krosis had the slightest bit of sorrow for his deeds as a dragon priest and have isolated himself as some kind of attunement or something like that.
I have no lore to back this, it's just something i like to think
Ooh, and the word 'krosis' means 'sorrow' or 'apologies'!
@@hildebos1653 he probably felt great sorrow and decided to live the rest of his days as a wander
I accidentally stumbled across Krosis at the beginning of my very first game....only because I saw a dragon and decided to go kill it. His mask helped so much earlier on in the game.
Yeah it adds some very nice bonuses for the stealth builds 🥷

based on where he is buried and the word wall next to him that reads (translated)
"Modir the Far raised (this) stone
in memory of his brother, Oskar
the Fool, whose voice was weak and
not (the) mighty Thu'um of his clan."
I think Krosis is Modir, and his (likely younger) brother was so weak in the voice compared to his older Dragon Priest brother that his shame led to the death of himself at the hands of other dragon priests and left Modir to take on the new name, Krosis
I thought, "Krosis" means "Hunter" and the reason he's tomb was on a mountain because he loves the outdoors. Thanks for clearing that up
Actually, if I recall correctly, Hunter in the dragon tongue is ‘ah’. Odahviing’s name means ‘Snow-Hunter-Wing’ or something like that
Goofy-ah speculation *badumsch*
Theory time.
So considering they were once Skyrim's ancient jarls we can say:
Rahgot - ancient ruler of the Rift
Otar- ancient ruler of the Reach
Volsung - ancient ruler of Haafingar
Vokun - ancient ruler of Hjaalmarch
Morokei - ancient ruler of Bromjunaar (Old Whiterun's capital)
Krosis- ancient ruler of the pale
Hevnoraak - ancient ruler of Falkreath
Miraak - ruler of Solstheim
Now for Nahkriin I would say he was probably the ancient ruler of Eastmarch , giving the deep connection of the ancient nords with dragons and his connection with Alduin.
Konahrik was meant to be the High King ,and maybe the ancient ruler of Winterhold, giving that it was the 1st capital of Skyrim and there's this theory about him being Shalidor
Of course he could've also been the ruler of Eastmarch , with his temple Revahkeim being just up the mountain (although that is a mod and not canon).
I’d be mad and have beef with Aren too.
hevnoraak, moreki and konahrik i think are my favorite.......hevnoraak has my favorite temple and quest.....controlled an army even serving him in death, you have to destroy at least 2 or all 3 of his vies of blood to weaken him and hes still possibly the strongest priest to fight...........volsung was quite powerful to...vahlak the jailer seems good to...duukan and zakrosis as well.....
i genuinely love this guy, i wish there were more content creators like him
How do you only have 14 thousand subscribers. The production value for such an overlooked video is insane

Must…. reach… first!! 👀 haha much appreciated, thank you 🙏
The editing quality is insane. Mad props, my guy. Keep it up!
Its cool when he uses the elder scroll border to look back in time
I think Morokei was a right hand man, or the "jarl"'s wizard for the clan, because his tomb is held in Labrinyth, which guards the last mask and the wooden mask, steals magicka for his own, and has his own special "key".
Gotta love that almost all the dragon priests are cruel, tyrannical rulers, and then there is just Vahlok the Jailer.
Yeah, Vahlok is an anomaly to the rest, he did good by being Miraak's jailor, and is the only one to not wear a mask 🤔
I didn't want this video to end, it was so good and entertaining with the story!
I'm loving these videos. I've spent so long breaking Skyrim at this point it's refreshing to dive deep into the lore again.

this is one of the best skyrim videos ive seen good job man
That means a lot, thank you!
Thank you, that means a lot! :)
Cool to find someone also in wales who likes skyrim and uploads good content!
Whenever I face Nahkriin, his health is always around 50% when I encounter him. Do you know why this might be?
Maybe it's because you're "forced" to face him, but has the same health, to make it a bit more fair?
@@brodyrichter8113 I suppose that would make sense considering that we already have to deal with all those Draugr Deathlords before we reach him.
Just found your answer here: en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim_talk:Nahkriin_(creature)
The very last paragraph states that it's due to a script error
Lore reason its because your so badass that your entrance does 50%of targets health by shock and awe
I've never had to fight him coz he just keeps floating toward his staff while I attack him
There is a theory that Konoric, the last mask, was for the jailer after his victory over Mirak.

This was well edited and informative! The Dragon Priests are terrifying yet fun to encounter, thanks!
I always felt that two most senior Dragon Priests were Nahkriin and Morokei due to their positions as Protectors of Skuldafn and Bromjunaar respectively
