Really happy for Best today. I first got into Broodwar during the 07 (or was it 08, can't remember now) OSL Finals when JulyZerg 3-0 Best starting with the best drone drill ever (BISU face lolol). Best has always been mechanically talented but today he really showed his grit and heart which he had never really did before. Best really is incredibly charismatic, I don't always watch the interviews but even thought it was translated the charisma was obvious and I only watched it because Best was so expressive after his game. Now I get what Tastosis has been saying about him.
Spoilers... I’m kind of sad that Light lost because of how few T there are in the RO16, but man I’m so happy for Best. He’s been my favorite or second favorite Protoss player for ages and I can’t remember the last time he made it to a quarter finals. Like he said in the interview he often has disappointing results offline despite being widely recognized as a terrifyingly good Protoss player. I couldn’t be happier to see him advance here, especially after showing such amazing games. The whole night was awesome actually, such fun and unique games. We’ve gotta cherish this game because there will never ever be another game like Brood War. So much of its brilliance occurred pretty much by accident, a result of small little idiosyncrasies in the engine (muta micro for example). It is the greatest competitive video game of all time by a mile. The definitive masterpiece and founding father of esports. Thank you AfreecaTV for keeping the spirit of this game alive and well. Best did easily the best I've seen from him in an extremely long time. If Flash doesn't manage to take it as Random I'd definitely be happy with a Larvae or Best win. Sad to see such little Terran representation in round of 8 without Light though, but Best/Larvae for sure earned that.

What a weird day for Best. I'm sure he's still wondering how he managed to qualify. At 02:35:08, Action went for the pacifist Zerg style. He kept pumping drones when Best's army was on the way to bust him. There wasn't even a full control group of Hydralisks to defend, so Best just killed him. I can't make any sense of that game. At 02:57:00, after destroying the robotics facility, Light was in a good position. With Reavers out of the picture, he could easily develop into a winning macro game. At 02:59:30, he was in an even better position: he denied the third, demolished most of Best's army, and had complete map control. Again, from there, he could easily expand, consolidate his lead and smother Best. Instead, he just decided to end the game immediately, and threw his lead at Best's natural. At 03:37:15, Light was in a playable position. He had lost several SCVs, but destroyed a shuttle and a Reaver and delayed the third. He could easily consolidate his natural and secure a third without much retaliation from Best. It was still 50/50. Instead, he gave away his entire army in the open. I'm not sure if he panicked or something. That's really weird. Action and Light usually are solid strategists. Light normally is "Mr Consistent", always playing textbook macro, to the point of being predictable. You don't see Light getting impatient and throwing a lead like that.

For example at the first time stamp he had put all his gas into mutas and needed to make drones to keep his shit up.. By the time his gas went up to build a bunch of hydras best already supply blocked him. He might of missed a hydra cycle or something but not weird or bad play at all.
This year group B was definitely the group of death. And I'm already loving this *Plasma* map It reminds me Third World and the awesome games we had on it.
Light proving why flash is the greatest terran of all time.... trying to play too scrappy vs toss all the time....build a massive force and overwhelm through numbers and patience not by rushing timings
You can A move the infested terran on any accessible portion of the map and it will explode on that spot. It doesn't have to attack a unit. That's why you really have to be careful when hotkeying them with other units, they will absolutely blow your own units up.
yep. If blizzard is smart, they'll make SC3 more mechanical, no infinite unit selection, learn from their past. There's great things in both games, gotta combine them.
SC2 just has too many unit types, making the races less differentiated and also the pathing is too good, when units can move together in unison that just creates undifferentiated death balls. The fights look the same but with different skins on them, just a giant ball of stalkers/marauders/roaches. It really lacks the flavor of BW fights where the units are much clunkier.
Brood War is more viewer friendly, in my opinion. The simple sprites make it much easier to identify the units in one glance. It's efficient graphics: not trying to look like a detailed painting; just trying to make the game readable. With that said, I think the biggest issue with SC2 was the story. Starcraft was a science fiction masterpiece; Starcraft II is a soap opera about two lovers fighting an evil god.
Light tried to force the issue a few too many times in his games. IMO, he should have just sat back and gotten more ahead, instead of trying to kill his opponent, and ending up making poor trades.

Today I was lucky enough to witness the Birth of Ogre Zerg Gamer and the Breaking of Artosis LIVE!
To be able to see both StarFoot Gamer and OgreZerg Gamer in action in one day was a rare treat.
This was so funny. I don't think I've heard artosis laugh that hard in over a decade of listening to his casts

I think I agree with you, but important to add how incredibly tenacious Best was in converting those small opportunities to victories.
He was down on bases. He was trying to finish the game but got ahead of himself. His moves were also very predictable.
Light panicked in several games. He's too nervous in competition. It's heartbreaking...

Brood war is just a better RTS. SC2 might be a more viewer friendly game and micro friendly. but the best designed game is still BW.
