This actually isn't random. The Vikings wanted to die in battle (while holding a weapon) so this man was offering to kill people that were mortally wounded so they could go to Valhalla.
Oh dang I forgot about that, I assumed dying of injury later on would be just slow and painful, I forgot they also would be denied entry to Valhalla
I know this, just assumed that if they died of an injury from battle with a sword that would be a better death than a comrade.
But honestly I don't know.
The comrade isn't as important as the in battle part. The logic is a little convoluted, but I think it would always be considered better to die in the act of battle than dying of injuries after
Thorkell the Tall, commander-in-chief of the Jomsvikings and the legendary fortress of Jomsborg, really took part in the Battle of Hjörungavágr in 986. (Episode 1) Thorkell was written down in Viking history as a monster, the tallest man to have lived at that time. He fought in countless battles and always survived despite sometimes suffering severe wounds.
But he did not switch to the English side at that time because it allowed him to fight better battles, but because the Archbishop of Canterbury, an important hostage of his, who he obtained during his battles in the war against England, was killed against his will by his subordinates. Disappointed by the Archbishop's murder and sensing that he was losing control of his men, Thorkell and several other loyalists defected and took 45 Viking ships with them. He and his men then entered the service of the English king Æthelred the Unready as mercenaries, for whom they fought against the invasion of the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard and his son Cnut in 1013.

Thorfinn does what he does with purpose/accomplish a mission for his end goal of dueling Askeladd... He doesn't understand those who love to battle for the sake of battle which is big with Vikings.
I feel like this is something people really overlook about Thorfinn's character.

At 21:59 when they're at the soldiers in medical treatment, you hear this guy yell "Hey. Bring some onion soup over here." - that's not random, it was actually a method they used to tell if you had entered sepsis. You would eat the onion soup and they would check to see if your blood started smelling like onions, and if it did it meant that your guts were leaking into your bloodstream.

a little something random that I want to point out here, because by now we've seen enough of it: Bjorn is actually much more of a thinking man than most of the rest of Askeladd's crew. he was the one who threw the spear during Askeladd and Floki's negotiations, he was the one who we mainly saw analyzing the match between Askeladd and Thorfinn, and he's talking strategy with Askeladd here... and it actually feels really ironic to me that this is our berserker of the series. like his main role that he's known for is "guy who eats magic mushrooms to become completely mindless" even though, when you get him talking, he says stuff like this. it feels like a waste.
anyway, here we see another of Askeladd's strategies with Thorfinn. he's moving the goalpost.
before it was "accomplish something great on the battlefield," then it was "bring me a head with a helmet," and now it's "defeat Thorkell the tall," and in every case, Askeladd knows he's setting Thorfinn up for failure. he can decide arbitrarily that nothing Thorfinn's ever done on the battlefield qualifies as great, he can "reward" Thorfinn for the head by kicking the crap out of him, and he can send Thorfinn to fight a guy who can deter an entire army. and Askeladd will always count Thorfinn's failure against him. "only warriors who fight on the battlefield get what they deserve" he says. this only works because Thorfinn has never had the context to understand what normal standards are. and even when he can guess that Askeladd is messing with him, he still feels like he should be able to do it anyway, because he was asked. even if they're mocking him... if he does it, maybe then he'll qualify as enough. but he's playing an unwinnable game, because Askeladd is making up the rules like it's Calvinball.
also, I still contend that Askeladd and Thorfinn hadn't dueled again between that time when Thorfinn was six years old, and their recent duel last episode. that's why Askeladd says "I'll duel you as many times as you like. bring me Thorkell's head." as the condition. because at the moment, he won't duel Thorfinn for just any old accomplishment. I think "same as always" just refers to the idea that Thorfinn's expected reward remains the same. he never asks for money... he wouldn't be satisfied with getting paid off, and he doesn't want to be disqualified from the reward he's really after because he already accepted compensation. the only reward he's interested in is another duel... as always.
but I think a key part of what Askeladd is doing, is pacing out the duels so they aren't constant. for one thing, he'd get annoyed if they were happening too frequently. but for another, I think it's integral to Askeladd's manipulative strategy, that Thorfinn knows he isn't worth humoring most of the time. Askeladd can't look like he's putting effort into Thorfinn. he isn't raising or training him... he's just letting the implication of Thorfinn's inadequacy simmer on the back burner. that way, when they actually do fight, he can trip Thorfinn's anger switch that much more easily. and also, when Thorfinn loses to someone like Thorkell, he still feels like it's his fault. he wasn't good enough, and that's shameful to him, even though nobody was actually expecting him to win.
in Thorfinn's mind, he really desperately wants to prove their lack of faith in him wrong. he can't stand the fact that it didn't work, and there's such a deep well of frustration within him for this. and I think the discomfort of Thorfinn's character comes when you stop seeing him as a competent battle guy, and start seeing him as a child who hates this. his father was trying to raise a happy, healthy kid. he's so far from that, and slipping farther still. even just Askeladd saying that Thorfinn had a bad opponent only spurs him on toward Wessex. this should be an admission that Askeladd _knew_ the matchup was terrible when he issued that command. but Thorfinn would only take it as the loss being thrown in his face. he'd only take it in the cruelest possible way, just like he was trained to. and he still takes each pained step toward Wessex because he isn't willing to part with a man he despises, who's never done anything but hurt him worse. it's impressive that Thorfinn can withstand all of this, and you want to feel proud of him for something that his effort has accomplished... someone should be, shouldn't they? but the real gut punch of it all is that none of this is a worthy goal in the first place. and if he keeps doing this, he'll never be happy til the day he dies.
also, it's just wild that Floki is here. the guy Thorfinn should really be angry at is just kicking around the plot, probably with no idea that Thors even has a living son who's turning out like this.

As an addendum to this, note that Askeladd is well aware that he could point Thorfinn in Floki's direction. I think everything you've discussed in your in-depth analysis highlights Askeladd's reasons not to do so; very well thought out and written!

and yes, that's an excellent point as well. Askeladd knows the Floki to Thors connection, but he has every reason to just let that ride without saying anything. in some ways, it benefits Askeladd to have Thorfinn's anger singularly focused on him, and not split between him and Floki. his manipulation works, because he's technically consolidated all the power over Thorfinn within himself.
so in addition to this being no skin off his nose one way or another, he also wouldn't want to deal with Thorfinn's anger gaining another layer of complexity.

Some interesting trivia: *Thorkell the Tall* also appeared in *Vikings TV series* in season 6 when they were electing the King of Norway. Although timeline in the TV series doesn't quite match but it is clearly him.

Honestly looking back the dialogue is really rich with character writing. It's interesting how it subtly shows everyone's motivation for fighting and how it's rooted in their ideologies and later reveals and the relationship between Askeladd and Bjorn. It's easy to forget considering all the stuff that comes later.
The call for onion soup in the scene after the battle is actually a nice touch...from the sagas, we know that the vikings would feed a gruel made from onions to warriors that had suffered a wound to the abdomen. If the wound then started smelling of onions, they would know that the intestines had been ruptured, and the wounded person would die (slowly and in great pain, so they would prefer to kill them quick instead).
Also, the Vikings were masters of the shield turtle tactic (much like the Romans centuries before), moving forward while covering both the front and top of their formation with shields, until they were close enough to employ spears or drop the shields and rush in, so stopping them with bows was not as easy as you'd perhaps think!
"whats so fun about battle?" people who watched and hated season 2 really never paid attention to this line while watching season 1
several of the vinland saga characters are based off of real people. Thorfinn Karlsefni, Leif Erikson, Canute and King Sweyn. Askeladd is based off of a tale. This is a historical fiction, in a nutshell, some events of the story can be predicted. He even went as far as to travel to such parts that Vikings went to to learn more about vikings and had a fascination over them as a child watching viking anime. It is a historical fiction so differences are to be expected of course, but just something to note!

I don't think that Askeladd saying "Same as always?" necessarily implies more duels than the one they've shown - it could simply mean it's what he always asks for, which Askeladd has delayed obliging regularly.

Thorkell is awesome, just another great character in a show full of them. He's not stupid, but he doesn't care about anything much besides having fun and fun to him is fighting. It's very funny to see Floki try to negotiate with him here because he is almost Throkell's polar opposite. All he cares about is power and wealth and avoiding direct confrontation while Throkell cares almost nothing for money and power and will go out of his way for a fight.

Thorkell wants to fight, but he doesnt straight up want to die, he is a lesser version of a bloodthirsty man, as long as he has a good time while fighting he is looking forward to fight (and kill)
Also funny thing, Thorfinn knew that his shoulder was dislocated, his ankle sprained and ofc Ribs broken, although he seems hurt its not life threatening somehow xD just random i think

Your ability to overcomplicate simple things never fails to amaze me lol. You always overthink things even though they are very obvious lol. Thorkell doesn't want to die, he just loves fighting. It's as simple as that.
okay but a lot of the stuff in this show is deep when you think about it... so its fair to question this a little. Thorkell will make his position known over time, but he also raises an interesting question. what will someone like Thorkell do, when he starts to get on in years? he wants to end up in Valhalla, right? but even whole armies of men will turn away from battle when they see that Thorkell is there, based solely on Thorkell's own reputation. what's waiting for a guy like that at the end? and Thorkell actually doesn't seem to realize that he's causing his own dismay. he's so formidable that no one will fight with him, and it genuinely disappoints him every time.

Now you're as far into Vinland as me.. I'll probably start watching alongside these from now on.
Put off the show for a long time as I'm not too much into this kind of setting, but it constantly gets praised so I started a couple months ago.
But so far I'm not too much into it.
Plot is allright, but I just cannot relate at all to any of these characters. They're all evil, Thorfin, Asceladd, side and main characters, everyone.
Maybe it's somewhat accurate just for how those times were, but that doesn't change I can't relate to any of them.
But I don't drop anything so guess I'll see how this goes and if I'll stop hating every single character lol.
So far my preferred happy end would be all of them dying horribly /shrug
You're not completely wrong but the characters get more complex as things go on. I think you'll like season 2 based on what you've said.
