"Everyone is a slave to something." You must recognize this truth. Kenny from Attack on Titan also said the same thing.

I have been excited to get to this one... god, I can finally talk about Askeladd and his manipulation some more.
first of all, Askeladd's every action and word is like, scientifically formulated to piss Thorfinn off at this point. the way he's behaving is so relaxed and casual, and he's talking about future plans with his crew... he is 100% not worried that Thorfinn is going to end his life today. not at all.
and yeah, Askeladd's crew seems to carry a very different philosophy on the gravity of death... but that kid that Thorfinn bumped into feels so similar to Ari, when we saw him back in Iceland. he's young, cocky, inexperienced, excitable, and all his friends joke about how he's gonna die if he goes out there. and to me, it feels like Askeladd's crew is much more dangerous to a kid like that, because they wouldn't treat his life with any gravity. Thors saved Ari from all his death flags by literally recognizing them too. Askeladd has been toting Thorfinn around since he was 6 years old, and even if he was subtly keeping him from getting killed, it's kind of a miracle he's alive at all.
and yeah, that line... "it's not the slave's fault that she's useless, you're just bad at using her. you can make use of anyone with the right approach."
Askeladd has always, and will always, know exactly what he's doing when it comes to Thorfinn. he's been pissing him off, consciously, all day. he's put off their duel until after he talked finances with his uncle, but scheduled it before dinner, which he does intend to be around to eat later. he starts the fight by trying to anecdotally talk about how young Thorfinn was when he started this, and rather than being about the fondness of "you've gotten so big since then," it feels like Askeladd is emphasizing how long it's taken Thorfinn just to get to this point. he knows Thorfinn is impatient.
and then, after their little exchange, where Thorfinn knocks away Askeladd's sword, and Askeladd almost grabs him, that's when Askeladd is like "enough is enough" and goes in for the finisher. and the first step, is to pretend he doesn't even remember Thors at all. in fact, you'd almost think he was trying to gaslight Thorfinn by questioning whether he even killed Thors in the first place. Askeladd knows that Thorfinn would never accept that, and this is all just to make him angrier, but there might even be a little bit of public opinion affecting things as well. the people around them know nothing about why this is happening, and they trust Askeladd more. if Askeladd questions this in front of them, and Thorfinn lets it slide... what version of the truth is Thorfinn allowing to go on the record?
but the only reason why Askeladd can use these tactics in the first place is because he's been watching Thorfinn fight for years. I think you're correct in saying that Askeladd didn't expect Thorfinn to make him work as hard as he did in this fight... that much is absolutely true. but Askeladd also knew he could pull out this tactic whenever he wanted. the question was more like... what would make a good show for the audience? how long does the fight really need to be, before he's had enough of it?
Askeladd might've struggled against any other warrior... someone who hasn't grown and developed under his watchful eye. but Thorfinn in particular, will never win. not as long as Askeladd carries such complete knowledge of how he handles himself in battle. Askeladd is playing the long game... he's doing more to ensure that Thorfinn remains stagnant, exactly as he is, than Thorfinn is equipped to understand. and then his line at the end... "you still haven't trained enough, boy." like, he puts the fault right back on Thorfinn. he implies that Thorfinn hasn't tried hard enough, or he's just not good enough... surely his fighting skills are the only issue. he suggests that the problem is just Thorfinn's own inadequacy, and that he needs to keep at it. Askeladd has reset the treadmill for who knows how long... Thorfinn isn't going anywhere. Askeladd knows the right approach to use with Thorfinn.
and then afterward, when Hordaland drops her tray during dinner, we get to see another slave being publicly beaten by their master. and it's interesting, what Askeladd says here. "look. it's terrible. a guy who's a slave to money holds a whip, and pretends to be the master of the slave he bought with his money. he just doesn't realize it himself. everyone is a slave to something."
this quote... and really, this entire episode, is something that'll be worth revisiting later.
I think Thors appears the way he does, and Thorfinn is even cast back into his younger appearance, because Thorfinn is still stuck the way he was back then. and Thors knows that that's the child he's really speaking to. now, as much as ever, Thors still doesn't know what to say to that kid. he doesn't know how to condense and express the things he learned throughout his life, in a way that Thorfinn would understand. I see his demeanor here as him accepting that Thorfinn will have to learn the hard way... the same way Thors did. it would've been nice, if Thors could've used the knowledge he'd accumulated in his own life to benefit his son. but the warrior's path still managed to teach Thors what he needed to know. all he can do is trust the process, no matter how painful it may be.
and there is still hope for this. Hordaland actually asks some pretty pivotal questions here. she asks Thorfinn if he's a slave as well, and Thorfinn says he's not. he can eat wherever he likes. but if that's true, then why is Thorfinn out here in the cold? surely this isn't entirely his preference. and in general, if Thorfinn is free... if he can go where he likes, and do what he wants, then why is he here in general, amongst people he hates? and then Thorfinn says that if he were her, he'd kill his master, and then kill anyone who came after him. but we just watched as he failed to kill Askeladd. and the truth is, until he kills Askeladd, he doesn't feel like he can leave.
rather than it sounding like "freedom is accessible, all you have to do is kill him" it sounds like "freedom is inaccessible, unless he's dead."
when Hordaland says she could never kill someone, Thorfinn says "then you'll be a slave for the rest of your life." as if there really isn't any other option. and really, that has been Thorfinn's philosophy with Askeladd this whole time. he thinks it's shameful to run away. everyone is a slave to something.
but then that makes it especially significant that Thorfinn remembers the story of Vinland. a story that he heard his father tell to a dying slave, who tried to run. words said as a source of comfort for that man, who had known nothing but hardship in his life. Thors couldn't have anticipated it, but those words were even more worth saying than he knew, because Thorfinn remembers them. they're just as much of a comfort to Thorfinn now... and to anyone whose life has been full of hardship. through the barrier of time, Thors told a story to his son. it's still applicable, now more than ever.

"There was a lot of female Viking warriors" - in Hollywood and Assassin's Creed perhaps, but not in reality. They were not entirely unheard of which is more than can be said about their existence in most other cultures, but they still were very rare exceptions according to all credible sources and research. Interestingly enough, they were more common among the Celts, but even then an occasional sight only.

I really love the line "everyone is a slave to something" that Askeladd says in this episode. The village chief is a slave to money, and Thorfinn is a slave to his revenge. The unsaid question is what is Askeladd a slave to? Most people have a pretty clear motivation for what they are doing, whether it is for money or glory, but Askeladd is different. He is disdainful of Gorm's obsession with money and thinks that he is a fool for trying to control people with his wealth. Askeladd knows how to control people, how to get them to do exactly what he wants, even someone like Thorfinn who wants nothing more than to kill him to get his revenge.
This is probably the first show you have watched where the character writing is the focus. That is not to say that the other anime you have watched have bad character writing, but the difference with a show that focuses on it is very clear. So often in anime we get one dimensional characters that have one or two characters traits dialed up to 11 and that is their whole personality. Vinland Saga is a perfect example of a show that creates deeply complex characters that feel human. You talked about being conflicted on if you wanted Thorfinn to achieve his revenge. The ability to make the audience feel conflicted can only be achieved with superb character writing.
My favorite shows are ones like this that focus on characters. Vinland Saga is leagues better than most anime at creating realistic and interesting characters, and I have to once again tell you that you absolutely need to watch March Comes in Like a Lion which has the absolute best character writing in anime. I would love to see it be included in the poll to pick the replacement for Vinland Saga.

  • @redroseibarahime8755
    @redroseibarahime8755 Місяць тому +4

you are right - Askeladd realized that Thorfinn grew up and might actually be skilled enough now to win a duel "did you grow taller? How old are you now?". Therefore, he knew that now he can only win with his wits instead of actual skill(just like with Thors). So he decided to anger Thorfinn so he would loose his cool and loose - knowing him very well. Breaking his arm would not have been necessary because the duel was already over but Askeladd didn't want to deal with multiple duels over their winter break and therefore he injured him so he can be sure Thorfinn won't challenge him for a while.
Also a note: A real duel in this time and age normally only ends with one participant dead. Imo Askeladd does not want to kill Thorfinn because he was a kid at the time and second because he respects Thors a lot as a warrior. He knows that he played dirty and only because of that got Thors killed.
Therefore, he prefers to use Thorfinn and manipulates him with "the reward of a duel" if he fights alongside his crew and skillfully executes missions. That's why the slave comparison with the blonde girl "Horda" is made prominent in this episode. Because Thorfinn is so obsessed with revenge he caged himself into being a slave for Askeladd - sadly now realizing himself that this is the case he is pitied by Askeladd and used as long as he can not come to that realization. If he lets go of his hatred and revenge he would be free but he decides to be chained down by his own pride and honor. Askeladd never orders Thorfinn around - he simply offers him a "reward" for a mission he clears. This is pretty impressive and shows how skillfull Askeladd is with people and manipulating them. That's why he said to the money guy "Gorm" that he is clueless on how to handle a slave. Ruling with fear and punishment does not give you a loyal and motivated slave. Askeladd understands how to motivate his people. Also: Gorm told Horda to bring food to Thorfinn which is paid by Askeladd - so he aknowledges Thorfinn as part of his men - it is just Thorfinn who distances himself because he insists on them being his enemy.
Also btw: The line "Everybody is a slave to something" is exactly the same line Kenny Ackermann said to Levi.

Kenny is AOT: Everyone is slve to something, they need to be drunk on something to continuously move forward.
Askeladd in VS: Everyone is a slve to something, they just don't realise it.
    Great Anime are written great.

    @emy8555 Місяць тому

19:25 I dont know if you'll remember this in AOT, but Kenny said that EXACT same line while he was dying, sitting up against a tree talking to Levi in his final moments. "Everyone had to be drunk on somethin' to keep pushing on … everyone was a slave to Somethin'." Kenny spent his entire life striving to obtain power, so he was a slave to that ambition/desire. Thorfinn is a slave to his vindictiveness/his pursuit for revenge. (Though As a kid, if he didnt latch onto that, he might not have survived. He had to be 'drunk on revenge' in his case, to keep pushing on). And since Askeladd is the one saying the ''everyone is a slave to something'' line here, makes you wonder what HE's a slave to. (aka his backstory that you have yet to see)
Brilliant lines and storytelling from both AOT and Vinland Saga

For me, the point of Askeladd doing that comes from the fact that Thorfinn is still a child traumatized by the death of his father, so he does not have control or a clear mind to fight with Askeladd but he does to fight with others. Thorfinn obviously has potential, he's been fighting since he was six.

Here's my take on the duel:
As I said, I believe this was the first duel they'd had since Thorfinn was a child based on their conversation at the beginning of last episode. I also think Askeladd had three things in mind when he chose to provoke Thorfinn:
    1. I personally think Askeladd believed that if he didn't make Thorfinn lose his rationality, he would either lose or sustain significant injury during this duel.
    2. He, like you, believes that this isn't the path Thors would want for his son. Nor does Askeladd believe Thorfinn to be currently capable of taking revenge because he cannot overcome his rage.
The third reason shall be omitted due to being a spoiler.
He and Kenny from Attack on Titan share the line, "Everyone's a slave to something." I point it out because I think they are very similar characters. I also find it interesting that he essentially admits he is using Thorfinn like a slave and that he believes the boy to be one, although I believe there is more to their relationship. I also hate to say this, but I agree with Askeladd on this point. Vengeance has always been a motive I take issues with because a lot of characters are blinded by their need to achieve it, and Thorfinn is a prime example.
It's a genuine pleasure to watch this with you! Thank you for taking on this journey. ^.^ Keep up the good work! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Luke, I really feel you about Askeladd. You try to know him but many more questions pop up in every episode. Try to see it like this: Askeladd is like a book, the more you turn the pages of that book the more you will learn about him, BUT more questions will drop onto you when you get a revelation about him. He INDEED is 1 of the best written characters there is in Vinland Saga Season 1 :)

24:25 I am very preferential to this scene in the manga. I really don't like that Thorfinn tells her about Vinland here. In the manga Thorfinn thinks back (it could also be that he doesn't think back to it, but instead the narrative answers Hordeland's question with Leif's tales of Vinland) to when Leif tells him of Vinalnd (episode 1), it serves as a great transition to the flashback Iceland stuff from the first 4. Smaller nit pick, but it always bothered me after reading.
