this is a really important episode, thematically speaking. we're finally getting some of Thorfinn's perspective, and I love that we get it in bits and pieces like this. first, through this dream sequence... he and his family are in Vinland, living peacefully, when there's an invasion on the beach. and it puts Thorfinn on the other side of what he's done to countless villages by this point, along with Askeladd's crew.
but more importantly, when he wakes up and goes out to that hillside, the country laid out before him isn't really that far off, in terms of a basic description, from what he'd imagined Vinland to be. and it raises an interesting question. why is this land so different? why isn't this Vinland, in any way that matters?
my perception is that Vinland is a place which can only exist in theory for Thorfinn, as he is now. if he were to show up in Vinland, he'd be one of the invaders on the beach. and whatever paradise existed there will cease, because of his arrival. Thorfinn can't go to Vinland because hell is wherever he goes. he creates it for himself via the way he lives. nowhere will ever feel like the place in his dreams.
this is where we get into the part of Thorfinn's psychology that makes it impossible for him to give this up. it's effort justification. Thorfinn has committed acts that he knows his father wouldn't approve of. he's done heinous things, which are basically indistinguishable from the actions of Askeladd and his men. it doesn't really matter that Thorfinn has a reason... these acts are still horrible things that he's done to innocent people. and if he's still this mad about the death of his father, after so many years, just imagine what any given villager must feel about Thorfinn.
think about what Thorfinn says at 17:50. deep down, Thorfinn still harbors a deep well of guilt for having been helpless when his father died. he hasn't done enough to make up for it. he hates battle, and fighting... he thinks Askeladd and his men are scum. yet he acts just like them, because he hasn't earned the right to leave. he hasn't killed his master, like he promised he would. he hasn't wallowed enough, in his grief. this is self harm. but that pain will stop someday... it'll stop, when Askeladd finally dies. only then, when all his effort finally begets something... only then, when the work, and pain, and stains upon his soul have coalesced into an end result he can accept... only when the effort is justified, will he finally be free. and until then, he feels like he deserves however much it hurts. his accumulated sins only make this more true as time passes, but also, based on the one criteria Thorfinn cares about, he's been failing all his life. he only has to win once.
but this isn't winning, if you're looking at it from an outside perspective. it's like that useless fight between Askeladd's men. "he called me stupid and wouldn't take it back" doesn't sound like a good enough reason to kill, or to die. what is accomplished at the end of a fight like that? was there anything attainable that they even wanted to begin with?
and Askeladd himself puts this into it's full historical perspective: the Saxons destroyed the Romans. and we're going to destroy the Saxons next. the glory of the Roman Empire is a thing of the distant past.
the process of fighting and dying is very very old, and Thorfinn is just kind of reinventing the wheel here... this isn't new.
I do absolutely love the line "dawn in the age of twilight" because whether it speaks to hope or futility is entirely a matter of perspective. the sun will rise regardless. the night will come regardless too. the world exists in cycles, for better or for worse. how will we emulate those who came before us as we move into the future? move forward with whose philosophy? Thors? Askeladd? which cycle are we watching manifest in Thorfinn? this is the tension inherent to his character.
also, good instinct on calling out Askeladd's light bit of bullshitting at the end there. tbh, this is another episode where future context will make it really interesting to go back to. especially Askeladd's little history lesson. but until we get all the pieces, trust the process.

I really liked being shown his perspective like that. I really dislike that there's barely any of that for the entire rest of the season and instead the focus heavily shifts to Askeladd and Canute. Never found either of those two interesting.

      [SPOILERS AHEAD]
I actually kind of like that Thorfinn's interiority is a bit limited actually. to me, it makes him feel appropriately stunted... like we keep seeing him as a child in his visions of home, and Vinland, and with Thors, because mentally, that's where he still is. he left himself behind back then, and he's been living as this tumultuous cognitive dissonance creature ever since. when he finally comes back, to try and develop his sense of self when all this is finally over, he's basically getting hit with every status effect at once. all the stuff he was ignoring during this whole portion of his life. it's also why Einar calls him an overgrown baby... he literally hasn't tried to be a person since he was a child.
      I like that a lot of Thorfinn's complexity in season 1 isn't really in how he develops, so much as how his psychological wounds accumulate. and a lot of that is done through implication. I'm the type of viewer who really likes being asked to do some brain work when it comes to interpretation, so having the ball passed to the audience like this is really engaging stuff. ^^;
as for Askeladd... I find him fascinating because of the way his stuff is peppered all throughout the story. there have already been so many scenes that it's been killing me not to talk about. like, the part way back in episode 3 where Thors is calling for Thorfinn and can't find him? over top of that, there's dialogue where the girl at the pier asks Leif if Thors will be going to the battlefield alone. and that scene has direct visual parallels with the scene where Atli and Torgrim leave, and Askeladd is all alone, facing his own type of battlefield. Bjorn is either dead or dying at the time, Thorfinn hates him, Canute tolerates him but knows he's Ragnar's murderer, and the entire rest of his crew is gone.
and that's significant because Askeladd thought he'd found his Artorius figure when he met Thors. when he asks Thors to lead him and his men, he's serious for a moment. but by now Askeladd has abandoned that hope, and lived as a jaded, nihilistic man for too long. he's already entrenched in a situation that he can't justify pivoting from that harshly. so he kills his hero, and proves why the world doesn't have those. people like him are the reason.
so when he steps into the role of Artorius in the end, by embracing a Thors-like self sacrificial strategy that saves everyone he intended to protect... that's significant. by some ways of thinking, he had the option to do this all along. the makings of a hero were always in him. or rather... a hero was never required. all it takes is a man who is willing to display the kind of conduct that the world lacks, and needs.
also, something that kills me about episode 8: Hordaland resembles Lydia. in her physical appearance, and in her circumstances. she comes from a noble family that fell to ruin, and she ended up sold into slavery. and it's interesting, not just because Askeladd's nihilism keeps him from feeling any meaningful sympathy for her, but also... Thorfinn is the one who is capable of comforting her with the story of Vinland. by quoting the words of Thors. if this heroic archetype is something that Thors had, and Askeladd lacked, then Thorfinn retaining this is a hugely hopeful thing.
I also really love how the story of Vinland resembles the story of Avalon that Lydia used to tell, but there's a key difference. Avalon is described as a paradise where the legendary hero Artorius went, to heal his battle wounds. a place that normal people cannot reach. the story of Vinland is always told to hopeless people, primarily slaves... and it's the story of a paradise they could run to, where they wouldn't have to suffer anymore.
Thors is a hero because he sees paradise as accessible. it's there for the people who suffer. Askeladd sees Avalon as a place where the hero hides a way. a place the hero wouldn't return from, given the state of the world. basically, Thors feels like he's accountable to the world and the people who live here. that's how you make a better place in this world. Askeladd feels like paradise is inaccessible, because it wouldn't be paradise anymore if men like him were allowed to go there.
there are just so many little bits and pieces that I want to talk about while rewatching this, but I can't spill the beans about any of it until he gets to at least Askeladd's full backstory...

      [SPOILERS AHEAD]
I will say, Canute's part of the story is still very relevant... but to me, it's the easiest to compartimentalize. I think his story is most interesting for the foil relationship he eventually develops with Thorfinn... and there's a lot of interesting stuff in there about him coming to accept that his father on earth has abandoned him, and so has god, the father, in heaven. and I like that Thorfinn, having been raised in violence, comes to value peace so much, while Canute, who had this sort of Eden-like idyllic upbringing, becomes disillusioned with the impossible task that god has saddled mankind with. but I think a lot of the politics of getting to Canute's character moments end up being a little bit of a drag. thankfully, they basically fix this in season 2. and I don't even really begrudge the way season 1 handled it. I think it was necessary... but I do see where you're coming from.

I think one of the saddest things about Thorfinn is that he's basically an addict. he keeps hurting people and he knows its wrong. he doesn't even like doing it. but if he's already done this much, and then he doesn't kill Askeladd? if he had to admit that he did all that for no reason? he could never admit that everything he's been doing is pointless.

I'm glad that you recognized that Askeladd's offer to Thors was sincere. Not many catch that, and the look of disappointment and the lie about joking to his followers are important to his character. He is a mercenary, but he is disdainful of those who pursue money. He is a viking who knows about Rome and Christianity. There is more I could say but with your knowledge of history that would be straying too close to spoiler territory.

King Æthelred II of England at the time was defeated by the invading King Sweyn of Denmark and exiled to the Duchy of Normandy.
As Bjorn said, ``King Sven won and England became a land of Danes.''
The movements of the English nobility left behind by the king are still in flux and uncertain, but London and other major cities have declared that they will follow the Danish king.

It is interesting how this episode shows a pointless duel to the death over something that ultimately doesn't matter - and then we have the discussion between Askeladd and Thorfinn where he mentions that Thorfinn will eventually win the duel, and he will die in a pointless duel. He then goes on to rile his men up to 'go out with a bang' - it's like he suddenly sees the weight of the time in front of him; he doesn't want to die in a pointless duel after just waiting things out; he wants to do something substantive before Thorfinn gets too strong for him.

Yeah you've picked up that Askeladd has to balance what he has to do for his Men, verses his actual Goals (We don't know them at this point), and his relationship with Thorfin.
I don't think he has a lot of love or compassion for Thorfin, but I think in a sense part of him doesn't like seeing Thorfin throw his life and talent away, even as he exploits him, I think he is trying to teach Thorfin how to think Long Term and not right in front of him, every time he beats Thorfin he does give him tips.
I think in a sense both Askeladd and Thors are both father figures but teaching very different things.
Thors was trying to teach him character, honor, and how to be a truly kind but strong human being with strong convictions and principals, Askeladd I think is trying to teach Thorfin life skills, assessing situations, thinking outside the box and how to achieve your goals. He's most impressed with Thorfin when he's cunning, like as a child during their first "dual" when he threw that knife.
I think him telling Thorfin that he inevitable WILL lose to him was him saying he hopes Thorfin learns and gets through his thick skull some life lessons before Thorfin kills him, or if he kills him it'll be through Thorfin being clever and putting what he learns into practice and not simply that Askeladd got too old and feeble to keep up.
I also think you're selling Thorfin a little short as a character in writing, even before this episode he had more layers than "Muh revenge" he only wants to take his revenge in a very certain way, if all he wanted was revenge he'd try to kill him in his sleep or otherwise sucker punch him, him wanting to defeat him "fairly" shows he wants to have some principals and doesn't want to be a coward like he perceives Askeladd was when he "cheated" taking him hostage against his father.
We also see that unlike the other Vikings, who kills for glory and fun, Thorfin detests doing so, even if he numbs himself to it, to him killing is just something he feels he "has" to do.
He does have a lot of tunnel vision about his revenge, but I don't think that's bad writing, he was wounded as a child and scarred and that arrested his development at an age before he starting figuring out who he is.
Askeladd is an adult that isn't trying to find his identity.
The tragedy of Thorfin is how him being so focused on revenge is causing him miss out on life both in his present, and not thinking about his future if he actually gets his revenge.
He doesn't share any moments of brotherhood with Askeladds crew, true they might disgust him due to their Pillaging life style, but I think its also meant to show he's so emotionally consitpated and has such tunnel vision he can't live life around him.
Thors said in a previous episode Thorfin has to learn what it means to not have enemies on his own due how stubborn he is, I think in a similar sense he can't understand or accept what Askeladd is teaching him (intentional or otherwise) until he learns the hard way.

Good observations on Askeladd, mate. Overall this is a fairly subdued episode but I think it's one of the most important (hell, they're all important because that's how well written it all is). I think what gets a little overlooked here is the talk about the Christian apocalypse/Ragnarok. In every age people have always expected the end of days to be just around the corner, but ultimately the world goes on regardless and what's really happening is people are projecting their own mortality onto the world. I'm pretty sure Askeladd is aware of this, nevertheless he's recognizing that he's getting on in years and if there's anything in particular that he wants to achieve in life then now is the time to try and make it happen. This is where it begins.

I'm watching along as of this episode, so no spoiler ..
imo Askeladd is looking to die sooner rather than later. He already looks really old, I'd be surprised if he lives past S1.
But ehh I'm still not into the show much so far which is why I put it off until you got to where I stopped.
Said it before but I just can't relate to any character and pretty much hate them all - not as written - but them as people.
I also struggle to care for the factions and their plans.
Before the insanity that is the neverending isekai boom, there were so many shows with similar setting so maybe I'm just burnt out on it. Especially Sengoku period my god I don't want to see another one of those for 20 years lol.
But yeah It *is* a well done show, but just not for me so far so I wonder where this will go for me.

Dude it blows my mind that Askeladd was only made to progress Thorfinns character imagine what the author would've done with him if he was given a bit more time to grow
