@@YachtHunters QMSC(SS) on this end. I thought I sensed another "Wheels". Your interest in Nav Stations and other terms gave you away as a Navy QM. I sail a Albin Vega 27. I liked how well lit the interior of the Calypso was, including the engine compartment. That leads to the segway about bungs. During my time in the Navy, bungs were called DC (damage control) plugs.
Captain Q and Randy's byplay remind me of how my Grandfather and I used to be together when I lived with him in Wiscasset. I love seeing not just the boats but the interaction as well, the both of you never fail to put a smile on my face. The both of you have found a lifelong fan in myself and my wife (who has watched every episode with me). Fair winds and following seas gentlemen.
This was a walk down memory lane for me Capt Q. I walked on a brand new one of these at a boat show in New Orleans back in '77 or '78. I could not afford it then and still can't afford it some 50 years later..... such a spectacular boat. Thanks for the trip Capt. 👍👍🤩 All I could afford back then was a 1969 26' Kenner Privateer Ketch, she was an eye catcher, just small.
I have to say you nailed it Captain Q especially with the VIP lounge for Seadog while you sit at the desk. The windvane comment was not overlooked as to my inquiry about yawls. Makes good sense. I always thought of Gulfstar on par with the Morgan. I stand corrected having been on a Morgan 50 at a boat show back when both of these were new. Alas so was I. Thank you Captain.
That is a lot of boat for the money. The changes done by the owner were on point and necessary. It is truly an impressive re-fit and I am glad you had so much enthusiasm in this video. I probably would have been the same, such an awesome boat. Though I would not consider a Gulfstar a blue water boat, the capsize screening and comfort ratio are not stellar but still safe and would make an incredible coastal cruiser/Caribbean cruiser. It is nice to see a center cockpit for a change.
@@malachy1847 You could cross the Pacific or Atlantic in a bathtub, it doesn't make a bathtub suitable for long distance and long term voyages. The term Blue Water boat gets tossed around quite a bit with no hard definition, depending on who you ask. My own definition falls more in line with Kretchmer's, yours may be different and that is OK. There are boats of all brands, lengths and construction techniques all over the world, they got there somehow. Fortunately humans have been building ocean going vessels for centuries and have an understanding of what works long term and safely and what works for nearer to shore sailing.
@@davecopp9356 No, I cannot, it must be looked at on a boat by boat basis with attention paid to her sailboat calculations and overall design. A boat designed to be a fast racer will probably not be suited to long distance travel where you need stability and ruggedness over speed. Do a UA-cam search for "john kretschmer bluewater boats" or check out his books in the library. It is a lot to take in.
Great post, CQ. My parents went on a vacation on a Gulfstar 50. They never talked about it. I assume they weren't used to being waited on, hand and foot. Dad always worked the halliards & winches on his custom boats: Raven, Vignette I & II, and Indra. :^) To sit idly by was alien to him. Although Mom didn't mind! She always said, "Watching boat racing is like watching the grass grow." To think how they lasted 60 years with 55 years in the same home, I attribute it to their devotion to their children. Few know that lesson these days. I pray all is well, CQ.
Check out the socks, tis no wonder the captain is light on his feet.....Another highly entertaining informative production from the crew of two. Stunning boat also. Thanks from Ireland.
She's a beauty. We seriously considered a Gulfstar 45 Center Cockpit at one point. I think I'm remembering your 50 VIP lounge was a work bench on the 45. Great boat!
I'm binge watching all of these amazingly informative videos and only wish I could find these fantastic boats for such low prices out here on the west coast. Wouldn't hurt to have this guy as my boat broker too.
I've been toying with a similar design in my sketchbook. A 45' Center Cockpit Wishbone Ketch, I like the little pilothouse. She's got an 18 foot beam and 6' 8" ceilings in the interior. Its a more modern hull design with a vertical bow, and wider transom at 12 feet. The deck will be entirely straight and level fore to aft, at 7' above the waterline, but curving down as low as 6' on the sides. She'll be named the Unsightly if she ever leaves paper.
Another jewel of a vessel. What a tasteful upgrade to a vintage Gulfstar. They upgraded in a classic style that is timeless...like your videos. This is a lot of boat for $159k!
Not really. Jeaneaus and Beneteaus for a lot less and much newer. Saw a 87 Hunter 50 which blows this away for about $80,000. It sold in 2 weeks. Even a 43 Hunter has better interior space for the most part.

It's a gorgeous boat for sure - is it a lot for 159k though? Genuine question, based on some of the boats I've seen for sale at the 20k mark. I would expected a boat that size to be like 90k or so. Edit I forgot to convert USD ->GBP, it's only £113k which seems more reasonable lol. Still higher than I would have guessed though.
