  • Hello! We finally got around to doing a boat tour of Navika :) Here we show you all the upgrades and refits we've done aboard our 1981 Tayana 37 that has been our home for the last 3 years. We go through the interior of the boat before moving on deck and share what we love and changed on this classic Bluewater cruiser. Some upgrades are more controversial than others! Hope you enjoy and let us know what you think in the comments!

    ABOUT US:
Hello! We're Alex and Lars. We've been living aboard our 37 foot sailboat, Navika for 2.5 years and are sailing full time. We started our journey in the South of France, and sailed around the Mediterranean for 2 years before sailing across the Atlantic at the beginning of 2022. Now we're in the Caribbean and who knows where the wind will blow us to next! Follow along as we document the highs and lows of our life on the water and share the incredible places we get to visit.

I owned a teak wooden 1963 Choey Lee Robb 35’ Yawl and found for the exterior sun exposed wood and cabin topsides and deck. This polyurethane (rubber like) sealer made in Germany called “Coalan” it is also used for the exterior teak decks on the cruise ships, so instead of redoing the exterior every year they will restore the teak every three years freeing up the hands that were normally used for the deck work they could be used elsewhere during the downtime. I used it on my hatches and roof leaks even the decks to stop leaking floorboards keeping mildew from becoming a problem on the interior where during the winter I spent a vast amount of time. Being in the great white north of Hampton, VA.

You're right, it has a lot of "soul". Beautiful boat, shown to us by proud parents. I mean proud owners. I have actually been around long enough to have watched you do a lot of these projects. It's been a long two months without you. Having loads of fun I hope. It is always great to get the notification that you have posted. Stay safe and thanks for checking in. ❤

My partner and I just bought a Tayana 37 last year and it's great to see the adjustments that different people make. Many of your upgrades we are also planning on doing so it's given me lots of ideas and nice to imagine how we can get her setup after a few years of cruising.

Agree, good craftsmanship and wood really makes a boat look beautiful. I’ve had a Vindö 40 for a number of years, and the woodwork really needs a lot of attention. But as you point out Lars, knowing which products work and knowing how to do, then it’s not that problematic. But you have to keep doing it every year, or much more work soon becomes a fact. Navika is a beautiful boat, keep up your good maintenance and enjoy her soul and beauty! And, good to see you guys again!

You're back! You really did quite a lot of projects on her. She looks so perfect. A beautiful boat!
We also made the wooden "ribs" under the bed. It's worked very well.
I really don't envy all the wood on the boat or the teak. I am glad I learned about this before I got my own boat without these things. :D
But that butterfly hatch is so nice! I bet it is a lot easier/cheaper to maintain (minus the varnishing) than a regular hatch.

Thanks for the tour of your beautiful boat.
When I lived on my cruising boat in Hawaii for many years I had to varnish every 4 months, and I put on 6 (six!) coats each time.
It took me most of two weeks to re-varnish all the beautiful wood and many times I wanted to just paint it but it looked so good...
When I had to leave the boat in Lahaina harbor for a year while working out of state I did what several south pacific cruisers were doing. After putting on my 6 coats of varnish I put on one coat of white paint over the fresh varnish.
The white paint protected the varnished wood perfectly and my one year away turned into almost two before I returned to my poor neglected boat. A haul out was in order and a full paint job but the white paint on the varnish was easy to sand off and apply one new coat of varnish and it looked fantastic. As did the rest of the boat after two weeks of painting the topsides, the deck, the cabin, and the anti-fouling. Living on the boat made the huge varnish job worth the time and effort but if I wasn't living aboard I would paint over a new varnish job. Then sand the paint off to reveal all the beautiful varnished wood when I put the boat up for sale. It really made a difference!

  • @fredmercury1314
    @fredmercury1314 Рік тому

I don't own a boat but as far as essential maintenance is concerned, I suggest breaking it down into smaller pieces. Just because one part is starting to look shabby doesn't mean the whole boat needs sanding down. Just make half an hour here, half an hour there, and pick the next worst looking part to sand and varnish. I think you'll find it's a lot more enjoyable to preserve the beauty of this boat when you do it continuously, rather than in one giant effort.

Just found your channel last week thanks to your boat tour video that somehow managed to pierce UA-cam's algorithm despite my preference for sailing channels. You guys are amazing ❣️ from your first video and they only get better. No long drawn out intros, fantastic videography, awesome subdued music. And your chemistry as a couple...wow, I haven't seen a couple that compliments each other better than the two of you. Your ability to concisely tell a story is perfect. 9.5 out of 10. I only say that because you have yet to tell your story from what I've seen thus far. Where are you from? Alex I think is safe to say the UK? Lars, guessing Canada. How did you meet. What's your sailing backgrounds? What jobs did you have before setting sail? Guessing Alex, a musician and Lars something very technical? And what pushed you both to choose this life on the water? Sorry for the long post but just curious and I think telling "your" story will help draw in a larger audience for you. Either way love your videos and can't wait for the next one. Safe travels.

We haven't really shared our story at all of where we're from and how we started this adventure, so we'll have to make a video about that and hopefully answer your questions! But in the meantime, I'm English but was born in and grew up in France and Lars is a weird mixture of Norwegian/Swedish/English but spent some time growing up in the US as a kid and couldn't drop the accent! Thanks for following along :)

Thank you for the tour, I am going to look at the same boat this weekend. It does not have the teak decks. I looked at a Baba 40 with teak decks, and they all need to be torn up, and lots of coring replaced/filled with epoxy. Keep an eye out for soft spots. I love the look of the teak deck though.

  • @DanBetta
    @DanBetta Рік тому

Varnish is awesome! The result is super satisfying! Just keep ahead of it and save yourselves the chore of stripping and re-building 12-14 coats. And stay away from 2-part. It's poison to work with, harder to work with, and not easily repairable (yes, it can be machine buffed but if you get a break or a crack it's misery).
And you guys have nothing but time for varnish anyway! Right?
I don't know what the teak trim around the bottom of the coach house is called but the one above is the "eyebrow".
I absolutely love the Tayana double enders, awesome boats. I had friends who purchased one almost exactly the same in the early 1990's and sailed away from the BVI.
    Great boat.

I love the look of these boats, beautfully made, great lines, warm and yet will get you through anything. The rig is excellent. The only downside I can see is what seems to be a small cockpit (never been in one), guess that's the price for a double ender and a safety of a blue water boat.

Hello guys, Love the tour! I have a 1984 T37 with almost the same layout. Only difference is I have a separate shower. My questions is, what model isotherm fridge did you go with? Looks like a tight squeeze. I was considering coming in from the end.
Thanks and sail on! Love the videos!

Paper charts and a sextant and the knowledge to use them are critical

I don't like the electrical panel below the door. A rogue wave could knock out your panel if your cabin door is open. I think I would add a rubber seal on that clear door. Just a thought...beautiful boat!!

The butterfly hatch is very cool. Good job defending it. Can't see, are there wooden shutters or are they metal round bars athwartships? I always wanted a deck prism.

Great boat, great vid as usual. As another teak farm owner (Cabo Rico 38), I was wondering which varnish you prefer. I’m currently trying Awlwood. The reviews sound promising, and I have say to it’s wonderful to apply. Lays down like glass in most any weather/ temperature/humidity. Hope it lasts like promised.

Hey Tom! Oh yeah the Cabo Rico's are nice boats :) Yess we've also recently switched to Awlwood after lots of trial and error and we absolutely love it! We use the Awlwood Clear gloss which has a yellow primer you apply first before putting down the gloss. We've only started using it recently so can't really say for longterm results but we've heard great things and it looks great. Is that also what you're using?

Beautiful boat! Curious what kind of seats do you have in the cockpit? They look super comfortable and Ive been looking for something similar. Thanks!

Thanks for the tour! As an owner of a 1983 T37 for less than a year, I do thoroughly enjoy your channel. Quick question, does your starboard settee pull out to make a larger birth? My bench, forward the nav station, has a water tank beneath it and pulls out towards the compression post and allows for the back cushion to lay down to form a decent size sleeping birth. I love it. I would assume yours would do the same?

Great idea for the chart table area. Does the bed raise up for good access to the engine room?

Hi there, I have just watched your boat tour video. It is a year ago, but I was wondering what top loading fridge/ freezer system you installed, as it seems it is a pre-made system. I presently live on another Robert Perry design. Cheoy lee 44ft. I am looking at refurbishing my top loading fridge and was interested in how you did yours. Thanks

Is that a Garmin Mk2s on your wrist? I like the compact size over the Mk2 especially for every day use. How do you like it?
