  • Sporting his best Errol Flynn mustache, Captain Q discovers a beefy Gulfstar 60 sailboat for sale this week. This one has a very interesting owner in that he is a Shackleton... as in a progeny of the famed Antarctic explorer, Ernest Shackleton.

The Shackleton expedition was a thousand times more brutal and incredible than he explained. They navigated open southern ocean for hundreds of miles and hit a tiny island with nothing around it for hundreds of miles. The navigator was absolutely incredible. The men were all absolutely incredible. I bet many of them never set foot on any boat ever again in their lives!

Shackleton was born 30 mins down the road from me at impressive Kilkea Castle in County Kildare. He was upper crust Anglo-Irish. His most valued crewmember was Tom Crean, who came from a farming background in County Kerry. Crean and Shackleton were two incredible Irishmen from both ends of the social spectrum.

Beautiful...just stunning and I will now go buy some lottery tickets...brb...

Very nice vessel did not know that the price would be so high being a Gulfstar but also the nicest fit and finish I have ever seen on a Gulfstar she is probably worth all of that everything was well maintained and she looked very well constructed and also she is massive in size kudos to the owner and past owners for keeping her up in tip top shape a real gem for a big fiberglass vessel and definatly way above my pay grade

I kind of followed the motorsailors. They went down to near junk value but then people discovered them as live aboards and the price has climbed ever since. Did'nt know or forgot they made a pure sailor. The prices on these old boats in the NE seem pretty high maybe beyond loan value.

A friend had a broken centerboard cable on his 32’er. It was a real effort to get it back into the shallower marina with that deep lead cbd. And more to replace the cable. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to fix one on a 60’er. 🧐 A true yacht though.

Thats a big boat with a lot of space for a familly to live aboard ... and able to get into some shallower waters with that lifting keel.
Is that Balsa wood in the hull to form a structural component or just for hull insulation?
I've seen both done ... though i think i would get a bit stressed with it used as a structural element in such a large hull if it took some bumps or grounded a tad with tides whilst at anchor.

Wow, what a stunner! If you told someone to close their eyes and picture a sailing yacht, this is what they would see. Captain, I was wondering if you would ever look at a sailing catamaran? I know that might offend some purists, but it would be interesting to see your take on one. Thanks for your wonderful, educational videos!

They serve a great many people in many ways as floating beach homes or winter getaways , but I personally find them visually offensive and unseaworthy and claustrophobic. They do nothing for my soul and that’s what sailing is all about
We might do one when we finish off all the mono Hulls

Now that is a REAL yacht! Gulfstar's earlier boats (prior to 1979) seldom had blisters but quality was not so good. Gulfstar oats built in the early eighties were very high quality but had blister problems due to the OPEC oil embargo which forced many builders to switch to cheaper polyester resins instead of the isophalic resins they had been using before. The cheaper resins affected not only Gulfstar, but plenty of other builders during that time period, including Swans. By now, any of the boats built in the eighties blister years have almost certainly had epoxy barrier coats. If I had the means for a world cruising expedition yacht at a reasonable cost, this would be one of the finalists!

I would have thought the older boats would have solid cores and be very heavy.

    • @Morrisfactor
      @Morrisfactor 2 роки тому

@@rogersmith7396 I suppose they are heavier than the super lightweight newer boats but with a Displacement/Length ratio of 237.35 and a Sail/Displacement ratio of 16.51 the Gulfstar 60s would be considered on the light side of MODERATE. (For comparison, the well thought of Valiant 40s have a D/L ratio of 267 and a S/D ratio of 15.85) .All that size and weight on a Gulfstar translates into a much more comfortable motion at sea (Comfort Ratio is an excellent 44.47) and the Capsize Screening Formula is about as good as I've ever seen at 1.64. Those beat the pants of the newer boats, as does the ability of the Gulfstar to survive impact with a reef or shipping container.

That yacht selling for $300k is a gift. It is worth so much more, for so many different reasons.
The layout walks so much larger than 60ft. I don't recall what the beam is but, once the length of a boat exceeds 35 ft the beam really starts to increase, allowing for so much area to work with from a design point.
For instance the engine room was so spacious, allowing access to the whole motor with working space.
I'm ready to get a loan and buy that boat and live on it. A one bedroom condo costs twice as much to buy where I live and a condo there's no anchor to raise if I wanted to move. I'd be stuck having to buy a boat and the condo.
Plus, with it only being 60ft the slip fees per month wouldn't be very expensive, depending on the marina. I live next to Marina Del Rey, CA. . Not exactly a cheap marina but it is large enough that finding a slip that size with full hookups for live aboard may not be too difficult.

@@YachtHunters --- thanks for your highliting my comment and for your reply.
I spent 40 yrs of my life living, growing up from birth until I was 30 yrs old, living no further than a mile or two of and in Marina Del Rey and the flanking beaches. I knew and know a lot of people who live(d) on boats as small as 25 and 30 ft alone, and also a couple of families with two and three kids that lived on boats, both sail and power yachts in the 80 ft or more size. The cost can be very high in some cases and sometimes it can be less expensive than buying property. But, as you know very well, upkeep/maintenance of even a small sailboat, say a 30 ft Catalina can still be a lot of work and can keep your bank account on the lower end of wealthy. Most of the people who live full-time on a boat don't do it for very long.
Being that I'm single, no ex wife, no kids, have my own business that I make into six figures without working every day of the week, I could afford to buy and live aboard a boat like this. But, I would have to hire some help. I'm definitely able to do a lot of work as far as maintenance,, I've been an electrician for over 30 yrs, I've always worked on my cars and motorcycles as much as I am able to, I grew up around all kinds of boats but never owned one and I barely know how to sail, one of my friends in Jr high and high school was allowed to take the 30 ft Newport any time it was available and we would ride our bikes to the marina and go sailing once a month or so, but I wouldn't know how to skipper a boat like this. The most experience I have navigating a vessel in the ocean is paddling and or steering a 40ft long by 18 inch wide, 18 inch deep Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe. I was part of a semi pro team for a few years. Just as challenging or more so, but in different ways than piloting a large boat.
Thank you for showing that beautiful boat in this video.
I do have one question still... How much of that unfinished work will be finished before selling and what isn't getting finished? In other words, will that boat be turnkey or will there still be a need to throw more money into making her a reliable, seaworthy, and livable vessel?
