Pros please tell the beginners that Drop D means the D higher then the E. Not the one about an octave up :D Otherwise, its always good to have a backup set of strings 😂

I bought my first guitar about 2 years ago and man. I can really hear the difference in my skill. I've gotten kinda close to dimebags tone. My palm mutes and pinch harmonics are heavy and crisp. Nothing more rewardin than playin a song and see people face.

I always wanted to buy a guitar, I realized my dream today (at 36). And this is exactly what I want to do, I don't want to "learn to play guitar" just try to make these sounds and perhaps learn a couple of my favorite songs. Thanks, great video!

Simon; great presentation - your technique is straightforward and easy to understand. I'm 61, had not picked up a guitar in almost 40 years, and my wife gave me an awesome 2014 Les Paul Traditional and a Line 6 modeling amp for Christmas. For the last month I've been relearning chords, practicing chord changes, stretching and training my fretting fingers and learning pentatonic scales. I don't feel ready to jump into playing songs yet although I've learned 3 or 4 easy metal riffs. I don't think the people here in their 20s commenting that they're too old have much to worry about, because I'm determined to get that LP wailing if I have to spend the rest of my life trying. Many thanks for the lesson and inspiration, and I'll be looking for more of your videos to help me get my metal on.
    Cheers from Florida!

you may be happy to learn that I picked up a BOSS distortion pedal yesterday and got such a thrill from playing that I was cackling like a maniac and felt like a metal god for a few minutes
thanks for that, man. it was a rush

I go DADGBE , and this is why . You know the scales , A A sharp B C C sharp D D sharp E F F sharp G G sharp . It means a cpl things . A finger bar on the top 2 or 3 strings is a proper power chord and it means , if you know the notes in the scales , that finger bar and positions gives you knowledge of what notes are the roots and the fifths , and that can be transferred to keyboard , too . By knowing the notes in each power chord , you can figure the specific positions anywhere on the strings . Secondly , I ignore scales , because that limits you to the notes you can use . Economy of movement is a bigger thing than scales . Two things about that that may help a little . Most songs written are written by one person , not by a band jamming , at least in the initial stages . Let's look at Fade to Black for example . You can tell by the positions that James wrote the main melodies - and your fingers are always in similar positions on the fretboard . You're not going from fret 3 to fret 12 to fret 1 etc , you're maintaining a specific position on the fretboard for your hand . Second thing about the economy of movement is rehearsal to create familiarity of hand shapes for specific passages . Again , on Fade to Black for example , rehearsing shows you the optimum finger positions for prolonged passages to reduce finger movement ie your hand stays in the same positions but you only move the finger or fingers you have to move at each point .
As for tuning by ear , I use the first four notes , D D D Sharp and E for the intro to come as you are by Nirvana . Knowing where those three notes are on each string gives me perfect tuning .

Hey Haxbox, you should try learning this stuff when your 58 years old as I am. I've been playing old school style rock for 48 years, I find learning metal to be a difficult challenge because of how the old school style is so ingrained into me. Thanks to Simon, I might be able to pick up on it, but I'm no so sure...Nice lesson there though Simon, thanks.

Just one major mistake in this vid. When saying „heavy metal t-shirt, you should have continued „doesn‘t have to be this one - but it’s a good one“.
    Great video, great teacher!
