The older the song, the harder it is to tell the difference between hard rock and heavy metal. Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple can be considered hard rock or an early form of metal. Both are genres or subgenres of rock & roll music.

I think hard rock is more melodic, more instruments, more fun. Metal is more visceral and attitude, more energy and speed, of course
Actually I find Metal to be by far more melodic. Hard Rock often consists of repeating patterns within a limited tone range, while Metal riffs vary more often and have more complex melodies, rhythm changes and different tone ranges, often within the same song. Of course this could also be said for many Hard Rock songs and the line might be blurred (even though some music professors could probably exactly define the difference and tell them apart with ease), but this is how it sounds to my ears.
Also about the "more instruments" part: Really depends on your subgenre of Metal. There is quite a difference between for example Black Metal and Symphonic Metal. In these kind of videos there's for some reason mostly Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal and if it's an American video also Nu Metal. For those I might actually even agree with you
Listen to Clairvoyant Disease by Avenged Sevenfold, i think it starts with the sound of a rare progressive or atmospheric metalcore style, but when the riffs start they torturing the other instruments with their superiorness
@@Elveheart yeah we need more power metal in these videos

@@Elveheart Dude... there's Symphonic Black Metal. It got quite popular within the genre actually.

Same
This was pretty damn cool. I like a lot on both sides. While I definitely think the metal is tougher to play the rock allows you to have a lot more "fun".
👍😉🤘
I've gotta say. This video is what brought me into metal 2 years ago... Thank you so much for unlocking a whole new world for me.
In general I find metal riffs to have more intricate rhythms while rock tends to emphasize the importance of each note and articulate each. Of course there are exceptions but I just find this to generally be true as a guitar player myself.
👍😉🤘
As a drummer i agree. You can also feel that effect on drum.Just listen AC/DC Highway to hell chorus part and Metallica Master of the puppets.
Excellent post.
No entiendo la letra soy de mexico megusta todo tipo de musica y creo que esta difisil la batalla los dos jeneros estan chidos pero me boy mas por el metal
On bass it's the same way, but arguably even moreso. But that's because most rock has really really simple bass riffs except for a few exceptions that I honestly can't think of the names of atm
The irony is, circa 1980 something, a good number of those Hard Rock bands were accepted as metal. Led Zep, Deep Purple, Scorpions ... all considered metal pioneers back then. Even AC/DC was in that camp, before heavy got "heavier"
👍😉🤘
That's what I'm saying is that most of the "hard rock" bands in this video are in fact heavy metal. Because I've been saying forever the two genres are practically the same thing. The difference is minimal.
Yeah, I actually have this "hard rock" songs and artists on my metal playlist. If you think about it, they belong in both categories, depends more on the epoch and the public that listens to them.
Btw, I loved the video.
metal->heavy metal
I don’t get why you’re saying that. To me hard rock and metal have a different vibe, guitar sound, drumming style and intensity. Hard rock, albeit heavy, is somewhat more upbeat and melodic/conventional, while metal has no interest in beauty contests.

very true, love a good mix of em. honestly a lot of the songs could've been argued to also fit the genre they weren't listed as in this video
@Conrad Kujur Yeah I can agree. I've been listening to metal for almost 2 years, and I can't seem to stop listening to it. Even though from time to time I tend to have short breaks from music genres, and listen to different music genres. I just can't seem to quit.
I once asked a friend who is a hardcore metalhead: "What makes Metal... Metal?"
He said: "The fuzz."
So Hendrix is metal then 😉
Blues with distortion is most of what makes metal metal, 90% of it is rooted in blues music lol
@@markrenton5791 I mean Hendrix already was heavy in his time so :p
@@skater-fd8rk in its origins yes, but there's a vast amount of classical music influence in metal now. Plus many great metal guitarists were also trained in classical guitar.
it’s when you get the sudden urge to do a math problem that makes it metal
Many times I have looked at the open road, many times I have lied - many times I have literally listened, many times I have thought how much there is to know, but gentle is the man who knows who he was missing, but many dreams come true and some have positive sides, but I live for my dreams and often pockets of gold

To quote the late, great Lemmy" Heavy metal IS rock and roll. It's just a different name". Metal is the genre always pushing the musical boundaries of Rock. It's always changing, always evolving. Metal influenced the early Hardcore pun k bands, who in turn influenced the thrash metal bands. It's been taken in so many different directions it's honestly difficult to nail down the relationship from subgenre to subgenre. Norwegian Black Metal has nothing in common at all with Black Sabbath or Judas Priest. Death Metal has no classical music in it. thrash was the dividing line where metal completely changed.
