I like the holey clay pots for my cattleyas. I keep most of my orchids outside for 8 months of the year. Also, my climate is hot and humid for most of the year. The rainy season goes from May to Sept/October. The extra ventilation holes help with the wet/dry cycle that catts like.

Thank you once again for excellent information. I use both clay and plastic, I have discovered orchids such as Phals with their thick roots can get stuck and pinched in the plastic pots with slits , so I use plastic for orchids with thin roots.

Clay pots are great here for things like cattleyas here in my part of Florida. The hottest part of summer coincides with the rainy season. So, they get to enjoy tropical downpours and then dry out before next one (and stay cool). You do have to water more in April and May where it’s hot but still dry. You’re right, it’s all about your particular climate and growing conditions. Thank you so much for your videos, your experiences are so helpful for many of us!

I have 32 phalenopsis in clay pots and they are SO happy. If I need to repot I just take a hammer and gently tap until the pot breaks. They are so economical where I live, that for me they are disposable.
I have some cats and bulbos in holed clay pots and they love it too. But I am a fusser. I water almost daily with a mister, as I have a lot of mounted types also. So I am definitely sold on clay pots in south Ga USA

My climate is similar to yours but even hotter (35 C or above) and drier (sometimes down to 7% RH) in the fall. Growing outdoors, terra cotta pots worked best; spray down all the orchids in the morning (with tap water), which kept them cool during the midday and also kept them from being dehydrated. By nightfall the pots are dry so I don't have to worry about the bark medium rotting too quickly. During the cooler months just water less frequently. Yes, the roots do stick to the clay, but if soaked well before repotting I found most of the roots did ok - I just break the pots to get out the orchid, given the orchid is the valuable thing and the pots are easily replaced.

Oh that’s why my plants love these clay pots as soon as I loved them into them, because of the cooling effect. I live in FL and the part of my apartment that I have them in bc of the natural light doesn’t get much ac. Makes so much sense now.

First of all I want to say that I use clay pots because I like the look of them as opposed to some of the other pros you've mentioned in your video. However, I did find, as you mentioned in your cons, that there was quite a bit of drying out that wasn't working for me either. Especially with the new root tips that would grow to the side of the pots near the top. So, I've sprayed the outside of my clay pots with Polyurethane spray. I use a flat/no gloss so it still looks natural. Also, by using a very light coat the pot is still porous to some extent but it does not lose as much moisture as if it wasn't sprayed and I can add another coat if I want it to be even less porous. There is still some of the wicking effect on the inside of the pot as well but not as much if not sprayed at all and there is still the cooling effect. Of course I don't spray pots I am using for Cattleyas or orchids that like to be on the drier side, only for orchids that don't need to dry out as much. I've also started experimenting with spraying the inside a little too, especially the top, inside rim so that the roots don't stick as badly and also the clay doesn't suck moister from the new root tips and desiccate them. However, I'm not sure if the polyurethane will harm the plant itself so I've just started experimenting with this. It does seem, as long as you let the polyurethane dry completely, that there has been any ill affects to my plants so far. This has also cut down on the salt accumulation and the algae growth.
I hope this helps someone trying to use clay pots.

I tried using clay pots, but I soon realized that clay is a true salt magnet. After just two months the top lip of the pots started secreting these weird dry crystals, and I determined that they were salt. I don't use them anymore, I use glazed pots.

Judy McKerrow the risk is that the pot concentrates the salts in the walls and roots will be damaged if they come into contact with it. I find it can be overcome by soaking the plants in plain water every few waterings.

so what I do is that I use a clay pot as the decorative outer container and plastic inside to get the best of both worlds. For me, it's all about the evaporation to increase humidity around my Miltoniopsis which is sprouting four new growths right now. Such a proud dad HAHA

I agree that for orchids, clay pots are not the ideal thing, you do highlight some very good points! I personally have all my orchids in a mix of leca and moss, in customized plastic pots with ventilation holes, and from now on (almost 2 years) everything is well. Given that I live in the north of France, not a very warm climate (at all...), I feel lucky not to have problems with growing orchids...But I like to grow an variety of plants, and for cacti, Crassula, and other succulents, clay pots are absolutely essential! So, yeah, you're right, clay pots are both useful and harmful, depending on how you use them...

Hey Danny, I've always used clay pots for my plants and some orchids seem to be ok with it but others I can see are suffering from all the salts the clay pots absorb from the fertiliser So I think I'm gradually going to phase over to plastic.

Clay pots also don't come in all the shapes and sizes that plastic pots come in, and as they're not transparent we can't observe the roots of some plants we want to keep a close eye on... minor disadvantages but still :)

Hi Danny, I have had a large phalaenopsis orchid that I got from a botanical garden for several months. I've repotted it with bark chips and clipped it's very long stem after it was clear it was no longer blooming. It is in an east-facing window where it receives a lot of sunlight in the early day. It's leaves are a bit droopy but it has a new root growing out of the top. I've been giving it a little extra water, but haven't seen the leaves perk up yet. Any suggestions?

Evaporative cooling works because water is an excellent heat transfer medium, and carries a lot of thermal energy (high specific heat). Warmer water molecules wick away & carry away heat

I saw this and your old video of the orchids staying hydrated in clay pots without a medium. I was thinking about trying it in San Diego (low 70s and low humidity). I think it would be easy to just keep the saucers topped up with water rather than a more involved process of pouring, draining, and repeating that I use. Would spraying the roots with the fertilizer water I use be a convenient way to keep them fed?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  4 роки тому

Hi, not sure I understood properly, but if you are refering to keep the pots without medium and pouring water only in the saucer, I think you'd have to do that very frequently. Spraying fertilizer is ok I guess, I would much rather soak in fertilizer, let the plant have time to get her nutrients ☺️

Have you ever tried attaching an epiphytic orchid to the outside of a clay pot? I've seen products like the Terraplanter where the roots are attached outside the vessel and the inside is filled with water. I'm wondering whether this would be a good way of getting plenty of air to roots, but allowing them to absorb moisture that wicks through the pot.
