I’m becoming a rescuer! I go and rescue orchids that are dying or need some LTC or needs to rehydrate they are thriving! And I enjoy doing it! Thanks you for all teachings!
I really love this channel. Thank you so much for the teachings. Ive just started my Orchid parent journey this year, has been bumpy currently 5 orchids i have, number 6 died, but we are learning. Thank you ❤
This video really helped me understand how the different mediums harm or burn the roots. Salts from ceramics or water being harmful. My water is too hard. My air is too dry, but sphag was too packed and molded anyway. Everything was wrong. Switched to ICU tub, put each poor orchid is a bit of sphag with a spritz of distilled water. Hopeful for improved growth and life. This video was awesome! thank you.
Since I a newbie, I don't even know what type of orchid I am dealing with. I got it from my Mother-in-law who probably got if at Walmart and has never repoted it. When I got it, it was planted in a plastic cup with no air vents which was tightly placed in a decoration, porcelain pot. It had NO roods other than a few air roots. The medium in the pot was dirt, or maybe just decomposed bark, moss... Even I could see that it was in terrible shape. I was not sure what to do with it so I just place it in a pot that had holes in it with bark. That was a week ago. Thanks to this video, I now know what to do.
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos!!! I am so excited to report that I followed your video to try and save my favourite cattleya that had no roots left and only one, sickly leaf. I was checking it today and noticed a new growth bud!!! Can't tell you how happy that made me! I was sure it was a goner and it's such a beautiful orchid. This made my day! Thank you again!
I’m so glad you’re showing your process for saving orchids, I just splurged on a gorgeous Phalaenopsis, I usually buy the discount ones, but this one called my name! I got her home, and was trying to find the roots. I had to dig down almost 2 inches, her crown was absolutely smashed by sphagnum moss, there was no other media, just completely compacted damp moss. All but one of her roots was rotten or dying, I had to trim them and repot her. I did the same thing you did in another video, used just a bit of the moss near her root to help with humidity and near what look like new root buds on the crown. I’m hoping for the best, it’s such a beautiful plant. 💖
If you soak your pot with bark in it (with a bit of plastic tied around the top or the bark will float right out of the pot), it will stay moist for quite a while. I do this during Summer months. Also, for the "sphag and bag", I put three stakes in the pot and invert a bag over the top making sure the bag does not reach the table. This way fresh air can get in, the humidity remains, and my mold problem disappeared.
I have two orchids, one of them previously rootless, and I appreciate your videos so much! I'm really enjoying my orchids journey, and as soon as I am confident that my orchids are really headed in the right direction, I am going to reward myself with another ❤ I'm going to go look for a video on whether and when I could put any orchids outside. It seems silly to keep trying to increase humidity in a section of house that runs dehumidifiers constantly and it's 70% humidity outside 😅
Great video. I find the Spagmoss is phenomenal. I trust that it will do great by the sick orchids and it certainly has. I love the way it looks and feels, a lot better than the others on the market a 1000th over.
Thanks for an updated ICU video! Have you ever had orchids with fungal infections? I'm wondering if a couple of my Orchids have fungal infections... Their leaves get spots, then get brown, dry and eventually fall off.
My orchid plant I am sad to say is currently in ICU. I did try to recover and fertilise it carefully as it is my first orchid, I was desperate to recover it. Left it near my kitchen window thinking that the moist will assist. But like you said previously, the heat did it no favours. Most roots have dried out and I’ve cut them all out as mostly dehydrated. Will follow your advice on using moss to assist with root recovery. Hopefully fingers crossed 🤞🏼 more healthy root will reappear. Thank you so much. 👍🏼💖
Thank you soo much. I will try it with my Onc. Nova red cherry and Cym. Satin doll golden glow. I cannot express my gratitude towards you. I was dearly looking for this. Thank you . 😙
Thank you for the great info! Most of my collection is based on rescues so this was very informative. Ironically, I just went to an orchid show... bought 2 varieties of twinkle, zygo seedling, paph seedling, and cattleya which was division with no roots (4 pseudobulbs). And the cattleya definitely can use your technique on the video today!
Hi Danny. Love your vids on rescuing orchids and how to handle situations. Also what to look for. One of my problems up here in cooler climates though is home environment has less sun throughout the year and upon purchasing phals having to moved them from warmer controlled climates to the home which is dryer and cooler. I think the shock from transplanting and also media that is on the verge of breaking down creates a perfect storm for these mass produced orchids to wither. I’ve tried changing to leca and moss with minimal results. And even tried self watering with leca and microfiber also with marginal success. But I have two resuce phals where I unpotted and left bare rooted and soaking them an hour each morning am seeing some better results. One I repotted in moss and haven’t dropped its roots or the second currently in microfiber drapped on its roots is also alive with light green tips. I think the process of bare rooting for a week or two or month, allows bacterial growth to be inhibited through the drying process. But... we shall see. Food for thought.
Hello Dany! I am very discouraged :( because all my orchids that I repotted in Sphagmoss went all rotting and molding...I did not overwatered nor overpacked the moss. All phals! So now, I am left with seven rootless orchids very dehydrated! In ICU.
Sphagnum is anti septic of itself and pests don't like it either except for the occasional woodlouse and they don't pose a threat, all else can be sprayed 😁 It has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years and even stops bleeding, nifty stuff
Thanks Danny- You just reminded me what I need to do with one of my plants :D Also, i loved that period where you had that ICU with all the back bulbs. Some thing about it was very satisfying to watch, and to see the progress.
I bawled my eyes out just now bc I’ve done so much for my orchid but the roots keep dying and I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. I’m so stressed.
We have highly ventilated pots, and have gone from the "open roots in a glass vase" method to the NZ sphag. We do have trouble keeping humidity even; we're southwest of Chicago, and in the dead of winter. We're using a lamp on ours for the extra few hours of "daylight" and have lost a couple of "rootless" phals. Will share this video with Hubby, and see if we can keep our remaining babies in good shape!
Hi Dani! I commented on another vid about changing to semi hydroponic bc of my health and having to visit the hospital a little too often and worried about losing my collection. I'm so glad you included the tolumnias in this vid. My leca and self watering system came today so I'll be transplanting 25 orchids today except for my sick tols (they don't many or no roots and I do have them in the same spaghnum moss you use) and my paphiopedilum. I'm so happy and thank you for all the educational vids. They've helped me so so much! Much love 💙 N. Dillard aka Rowan P. S. I used all the data I had on my phone watching your vids! lol 😂
Hi I read your comments and pray that your health and orchids is better dear.I lost my husband of 46 years nine mths ago and 😊have found if I can make another smile Its makes my day ! I LOVE ORCHIDS
Hi! Thank you so much for these helpful videos. I am a first time orchid grower. I recently received an orchid and it has gotten to the point where all the roots are dead and the leaves are turning yellow. The stem is yellow also. I cut away the roots, spike, and part of the stem. I replanted it in bark. I placed moss around the edges but trying to keep it away from the stem itself. Any tips for my poor little orchid? Thank you so much!
Hi... firstly I love your UA-cam channel and secondly I have a problem with my dendrobium brown twist plant. My plant was repotted about 1 month ago and since that I see that the leaves are turning yellow. I live in Trinidad where the climate is hot and my plants dry quickly so I have to water them every day. What can I do to help my plant?
Hi Danni! Could you do a video on dendrobiums latoriate (I know I’m buturing the spelling there…). You did a video focusing on nobiles care as opposed to phals that was awesome(my nobile is doing great! Withstanding full sun in Miami even!). I’d love if you’d do one focusing on the latourias care like that! Ty for all your videos! Your passion for orchids rekindled my old passion then turned it into a giant flame ❤️ love is contagious when it’s genuine and your love of orchids is as viral as it gets ☺️
I am going to try this. I have an orchid that I found thrown out outside. The roots looked fine so I potted in bark. After about a week most of the roots rotted away. It has a few roots that are barely functional. They still turn green so I don't want to chop them off. Right now I have it sitting on top of sphag moss. Hopefully this works!
Hi Danny! I have a question about my two oldest phalenopsis. I had them for about ten years, but they stopped blooming two years ago. And this year no spikes so far as well. They have many very hard leaves. But yesterday I accidentally knocked one over and the bottom leave broke off. I reported the phalenopsis and found, that the root system is there and looks good, but there is no new growth. Just old roots. But the orchid has tons of aerial roots. I removed what was left of the broken leaf and found a ton of root tips under it. They grew about a centimeter from the stem and then died, because they could not break through the leaf. Having a closer look, I discovered, that other roots seemed to have grown up inside the stem and broke through above a leave higher up, where normally a flower spike would come out. But there a no roots emerging at the side of the stem. There is a root on top of every older leaf. Can it be, that they are not blooming, because there is not space left for a flower spike? And can I do something about it. It's the same with the other orchid, too.
Mascha did you ever get a reply? Or did you end up throwing the orchids out? One of my orchids is 5 years old, but it always has not bloomed as frequently as my others. Since your question was 3 years old I wondered if you got an answer here or anywhere else
I just put my phal on top of sphagnum moss to try to make it grow roots as it only has 2 little ones and one of them molded and shriveled up. What am I doing wrong? I wrung out the moss so it's not sopping wet and I put the orchid on top, not in it.
Hello! For very young seedlings do you recommend sphagnum? I find when I pot small babies in bark they rot almost immediately even with the slightest of watering.
Hi Dani! Apologies if I missed this in your video (which was informative + entertaining, per usual). Do you fertilize at all in your ICU setups? I have a not-quite-so-serious case in need of some intensive hydration & pro-root-formation TLC, so I’m about to repot it using the first method you discussed - but, I’d be interested in your thoughts for both scenarios. 🙃 PS I’m also a natural systems thinker and experimentalist. Needless to say, I 💚 your channel! ✨🤗✨
Hi Danny, how long would it take for phalaenopsis orchids with no more then 2 roots to start growing roots in bark with a generous layer sphagnum moss on the top.
One of my orchids just lost all its roots. I lost a 12 year orchid I've had since I was 7 and I couldn't find any information about how to save it or why it was dying.
I rescued a mini phal but it might be beyond help. I've just got it in a vase with water at the bottom at the moment, but I might go and get some moss for it. I'm hoping letting some light to the roots will help it tho it's had an apical spike and a basal Keiki so it might be utterly gone. It's not in a very good state at all at the moment.
Hello Dani I have a rootless magic art. It is really dehydrated. It does have a nub in as you would call it. It does green up when watered. My climate is 90 ish with 70-90% humidity. Is that ok for it. Is it to hot.it’s bare root and I spray it every few days. Not really sure how to care for it. Should I move inside to 74 degrees and lower humidity? Any advice? I hope you can have time to respond. It’s my favorite orchid. Thank you in advance.😁I got this far because of you. You are so knowledgeable. I learned everything I do know from you. I do appreciate all the info you have shared. Thanks again.
Hi Danni. Thanks for another great video. I have a little dendrobium that has looked like the one in your video. It is looked like that for two years. I will set it up according to your directions and look forward to seeing some new growth.
I bought a flowering Phalaenopsis orchid. It had beutiful flowers. My first mistake was not checking the root system before bying it. After 2 weeks, I fould a yellow leaf. It had a dark bark mixture as its environment. I decided to repot it with moss. I almost cried when I removed the plant from the bark. The roots were all dead. I cut them and left one root that had some form of life. Can i save it? Please help!
I have a young maxillaria tenufolia that is suffering after a repotting killed the roots. When I repotted again in moss with a bit of bark, I saw new roots but only one side of the plant is becoming rehydrated and for that I have done a few emergency soaking treatments. I have been using a bright grow light but I will try putting it in a south facing window but we have had so many gloomy days the grow light might be better anyway. Any other suggestions?
I HAVE A PURPLE PHALAENOPSIS RECENTLY REPOTTED. Before repott i saw that the orchid was unstable. Actualt it had all 'middle roots' dead, in a cocohusk plug. is almost rootless, but has 3 roots. also looks like a mutation. it's turning into a flower branch.
Hi Danny, can you help me, my cattleya is one by one buying because there is no root anymore, What shall I do to save it. Am from Philippines. Thank you.
hi' i have with 3 orchid the same problem i have green leavs but no roots , i put them with moss but nothing is happning ,i am affrid that its will be sick
Hello miss orchid. I wasn't sure how to reach you but I am having an issue with my girl and she means a lot to me. I dont want to loose her. What do you suggest I do. I have a picture but can't post it. One root left and leaves are starting to yellow.
Hi, I would appreciate an advice from somebody here. I bought mini phalaenopsis, which had a terminal spike and two developed keikis, but without roots yet. Unfortunately, the mother plant had root rot. I cut sick roots and changed medium to fresh one, first to bark, but she needed more moisture, so now it's in sphagnum moss. All three plants started to fade. So I cut one keiki and put her in sphagnum moss alone. Is there any chance that she will develop her own roots? She has two grown leaves and I spray them with water. Now she continues to fade. I will definitely use one of your tips - put her in some container to increase a humidity. About the mother plant with one keiki on it - they seem well, but the keiki still isn't developing any roots. Is there any way to support her in that? Thank you.
i have 3 like this right now. 1 keiki is totally rootless. The others have a few roots but were still getting too dehydrated on their own in regular medium. Here is what I did for each of the plants. I put 1 plant in a 1 gal ziplock (clear plastic self sealing bag). I also add in a small snack or sandwich size bag filled with damp sphagnum. I fold the opening of small bag back so that it stays open. The plant and small open bag in the 1 gallon bag. I blow into the bag (like a balloon) and seal it. I check on it once a week. It seems to have stopped the dehydration, leaves are firm and 2 of the plants are growing small/new roots now (YAY!). Hope this helps.. They've been in these bags for around 3 wks now and are located by an east facing window.
all of my oncidiums tolumnias dendrobiums cattleyas and vanda seedlings are in sphagnum moss can i tell that all of my orchids are in ICU lol😅 semi hydro set up of sphagnum moss with a transparent container in outdoor with partial shade is perfect for orchids but sphagnum moss in moist is costly here 200 grams 3 euros with debris and some clay sand 😅
I have an Encyclia Hereford Jewel currently in ICU set up like this...a new shoot sprouted and roots are too...i wonder if letting it grow further and then can I cut it off from it's older bulbs. This is cause the older bulbs are so bad looking as it has been munched by I dont know what. I didn't repot it right away after purchase as there was flower spike developing. And now I'm left with munched off bulbs. I don't want my orchid looking bad forever after repotting it. Please tell me if its ok to devide the new healthy growth and repot it without the old bulbs...
If that spike is still there, you should cut it to save energy. You can cut the bad bulbs, but unless they're rotting you're probably better off leaving them so the healthy parts can use the energy from them. Remove them if they rot or shrivel completely. Look for whatever ate it, I found a huge slug in my cymbidium today that ate some roots, but nothing too bad...
@@jenniferamundson15thank you so much...but I only have 1 new healthy bulb that isn't as mature. Though it has roots, I'm afraid it can't survive once I repotted it alone. Owh by the way, I said shoots as in new growth/potential bulb...no spike.
I bought a very beautiful oncidium in February and then noticed one bulb was rotting and I tried many ways to save it. Ultimately I separated it from the healthy one. The healthy one thrived until two weeks ago, and then devolped black spots too and lost its last leaf yesterday 😢😧. I also noticed that the bottom of the bulb started rotting despite water is controlled drying every two days, used cinnamon to control infection, used H2O2. The puzzling thing tho is the roots seems to be getting fat. But I noticed it developed some smell the other day. 😫. What do I do.
I have a question about the new zealand sphag moss I've seen in petstores advertised as bedding for reptiles. Is that safe to use for phal orchids or not?
its usually the same if not a bit cleaner as most reptiles are sensitive to chemicals. I've used both garden and pet moss on both my reptiles and plants with no problem.
thanks for your reply. I am not very good at growing anything I kill cactus even but with oncidiums I might get them to live a year maybe...I learned a lot watching your video truly you know how to take it to where a person like me who has done it destructively to a orchids I need 101 care for each of the orchids. thanks again.
If you're orchard is over watered maybe don't water your trees as much and let the rain it but I don't see how you can over water many trees in the ground...
This depends and you need pateince. I have waited months and ready to give up when something happens. Others start quickly. Being new can't tell you which but have been waiting on one for 4 months. Lastly, some will die, been there. Check Danni's previous ICU videos with their follow up. It really educational. I've referred to it more than once.
I’m becoming a rescuer! I go and rescue orchids that are dying or need some LTC or needs to rehydrate they are thriving! And I enjoy doing it! Thanks you for all teachings!
I do this exact thing with all my cacti and succulents and now orchids! It’s so rewarding to nurse the poor babies back to health ❤
My entire collection is an ICU unit
🤣🤣half of mine is
Lol😂😂
Hopefully majority of my orchids are doing very well....😄
Stop killing your orchids guys ...save it.
If that's the case, figure out what you are doing wrong.

Mascha did you ever get a reply? Or did you end up throwing the orchids out? One of my orchids is 5 years old, but it always has not bloomed as frequently as my others. Since your question was 3 years old I wondered if you got an answer here or anywhere else
Thank you for all your detailed videos!!! They’re helping me so much
What grow lights are you using for your orchids that are indoors?
How long does to be in the icu phase? How many times a week do you have to put water on the moss
I wish this were closed captioned. I'm deaf and I do need captioning. Thanks so much!
There should be! if there aren't it's on UA-cam, not me 🤷🏻♀️
PS I’m also a natural systems thinker and experimentalist.
Sphag and bag always ends up with mold or rot for me so I also prefer open air
Hi Dany,
Why is it that I set up my ICU unit the same as yours for my rootless oncidium, I kept seeing moulds growing around the base of the orchid?
Hi. Can you reuse previously used moss ? If not does letting the stem sit a few cm above water provide the same results ?
Can I save an oncidium with no leaves and no roots just pseudibulbs?
It does green up when sprayed
I feel like every plant purchased from anywhere is in the emergency room first.😅. Then, the recovery room.
Two days into an ICU jar with moss and two new root nubs appeared!
This is good to know❣️
Help help help I have one orchid I love no roots no crown only spikes and a crown rot ahhh I’m crying icu is what she needs!!
Good points, but once it has develop new roots and you reported to bark, will the roots die for change if medium? Thank you Dani
I brought an orchid from Whole Foods and she hurting bad and hardly any roots , waiting for flowers to finish drop bloom. What should I do
Hi Dani, I sprayed MSG on my orchids with no roots for a few days and in a week I had new roots and shoots from dried stems.
What made you spray MSG on your orchids and what kind of orchid do you have?
Thank you again
I’m not sure what’s wrong with my vanilla orchid. The pseudo bulb is wrinkle and so I have potted it in sphagnum moss. Please help!
Can you advice... What to do if one don't have moss
Danny, help please! My orchid has no aerial roots. Is this OK?
Trying to find what to do for dehydrated dendrobium orchids
Can i use coco peat instead of sphagnum moss?
I got no leaves at all, but some long trunks healthy, what can l do.
Good day my Cattleya leaves well 2 leaves are yellow since I place in this method is this normal I really don't want to lose this plant. Help!
My orchids had a few roots left after i cut all rotten root. Do I water it more frequently?
Hi Danny, can you help me, my cattleya is one by one buying because there is no root anymore, What shall I do to save it. Am from Philippines. Thank you.

Ηι, how about rooting hormones, are they suitable for this case?
i havent seen on orchid that was actually rootless??? Alas my rootless orchid may be a goner ! darn it.
Hello miss orchid. I wasn't sure how to reach you but I am having an issue with my girl and she means a lot to me. I dont want to loose her. What do you suggest I do. I have a picture but can't post it. One root left and leaves are starting to yellow.
I live in a humid and warm environment. Will this method also work in my environment? I have a few orchids without roots. I live in FL.
Where do you place the ICU plant, in a dark place?
Nup, in a bright place 😊
@@MissOrchidGirl thank you for responding
BTW no mold so far
@@margiedigiacomo5887 Do you still use this method with the 2 bags? Any downsides or things to avoid or watch for?
Five of my six orchids are in the hospital because of mold. :(
all of my oncidiums tolumnias dendrobiums cattleyas and vanda seedlings are in sphagnum moss can i tell that all of my orchids are in ICU lol😅 semi hydro set up of sphagnum moss with a transparent container in outdoor with partial shade is perfect for orchids but sphagnum moss in moist is costly here 200 grams 3 euros with debris and some clay sand 😅
Can u use the moss with Bandas? I have several down to one or nubbens for roots
Can you use saw dust to help save it.like to give it fresh
Well I have some cain orchids and I love them and would like more videos of them please
I tried this and got some mold on the part where the roots come out.
Does this method work on cymbidiums?
Can you make an update please?
Ce parere ai de bilele de gel..care se hidrateza.. tin umezeala deci pot stimula apartia radacinilor nu?
Hey, sunt prea neventilate for my taste ;)
I have some great questions for you can you please help me?
I've used both garden and pet moss on both my reptiles and plants with no problem.
it is absolutely safe. I use it for my killifish breeding as well.
What do you think about growing them in water only1/3 part?
Hi, not a fan of that, I prefer something with a more even air / water ratio :)
thanks for your reply. I am not very good at growing anything I kill cactus even but with oncidiums I might get them to live a year maybe...I learned a lot watching your video truly you know how to take it to where a person like me who has done it destructively to a orchids I need 101 care for each of the orchids. thanks again.
How long would/should it take an otherwise healthy orchid with no roots to form a root and grow to 10cm?
Hi, depends on the orchid, tipically 1-3 months, but it can be more ☺️
Hi
My orchard is over watered how can I dry it out
If you're orchard is over watered maybe don't water your trees as much and let the rain it but I don't see how you can over water many trees in the ground...
Keep a small fan nearby to keep air circulated will help, a little extra heat too

hi Danny, i'd like to know normally in ICU situation how long will the orchids develop their roots.
@@yomairal2477 ,thanks for your information. this is the first time i plant orchid i need more patience.
We all do with orchids. That is something I'm still learning.
Hey danny, i have send u an e-mail with an orchid "problem" woul really appreciate a reply.thank you
Sadly, didn't work for me. I think I am a natural orchid murderer. No amount of training seems to help.😢
