Danny, my family gave me my very first orchid on my 75th birthday! I never had the "green thumb". So, finally retired, I had the time to google "how not to kill an orchid". So many channels... until I found MissOrchidGirl. YOU'RE THE BEST - now my only trusted resource!!! My orchid is doing great, I am babying Keikis... looking forward to every one of your episodes!

I've been watching your videos for a while now and I've learned SO MUCH. I love the fact that you admit to having made mistakes on your channel because you want others to learn before they have to go thru all of that sadness and mess. You're my hero for doing that! Thank you!
I adore orchids and am still what I would consider a "newbie", so your information is invaluable. I live in a very dry climate, have very hard water, and am still trying to figure out how to grow these beauties (which ones I CAN grow) and how to make them the most happy.
People on the internet.... some of them can be extremely cruel. My son has been bullied and he says it's because they can't get punched in the nose over the internet. *lol* He's right. Please continue to do what you're doing. You're my absolute favorite UA-camr. I love your sense of humor, your wealth of knowledge, and your patience. Please never stop making your videos.

I have terminal cancer so I'm already sick enough without spraying insecticides, so I've been spraying bugs on my plants with cooking oil, and its working, because its an oil the bugs are unable to breath and unable to walk away, and so far it's not affecting the succulents and orchids I've been spraying. Greetings from Sydney Australia.

I wish I never made the mistake of listening to people about how often you need to water (once a week or less), that your pots needs to be transparent and with more holes than a Swiss cheese and that sphagnum moss is bad, it would have saved me a lot of trouble, but at least it was a learning experience for me. Also I have to thank this channel for the spidermite solution, is really godsend :)

@@JohnJames. I never tried, because spidermites seems to only target orchids in my place, (and I have few other plants), but I guess it could work, I see no reason why not, but don't take my word too seriously, because I have no first hand experience in that.

Salut Danny! I know this is an older video, but I hope you read this. You videos are inspiring and informative, I’ve learned so much from you. We all make mistakes and that’s ok, really! Don’t let people ever bring you down.
I saved so many orchids thanks to you and I’m finally learning how to take good care of them. And even though we have very different climates, the information you share is so good that I can easily use it, too. Thanks to you I saved a phal and a vanda from stem rot; a rootless paphiopedilum, dendrobiums and phals. I know how to get rid of bush snails and spider mites. I also saved phals from moldy, full of algae media, that had like actual mushrooms growing inside. My latest pride and joy is my zygo Romy that does absolutely fantastic in a soil/perlite mix.
Keep the fantastic work that you are doing si iti multumesc foarte mult 😉

I've actually had someone on a forum argue with me that bush snails were not like other snails and peroxide would not kill them. Someone had asked how to get rid of them without repotting. I suggested using a peroxide bath, just fill the pot with peroxide and allow it to sit and fizz. My family has used peroxide to fight garden snails for years, a snail is a snail... ohh yahhh and miss orchid girl says it works too. They REALLY didn't like that response lol. At that moment I didn't have any experience with actual bush snails so I didn't pursue the issue. Several months after that I did find them on a catasetum I had ordered that was in bloom and was extremely root bound. There was no repotting or changing the medium without cutting roots... so I gave it a peroxide bath and it worked lol. I wanted so badly to go back to that forum and tell that person that they were full of it lol. I didn't...I still think about it sometimes tho lol
Also...I wish I was your neighbor! I love the terracotta pots and would take them all off your hands lol

'You have no power here, treacherous mites...'
Thank you for the reference- made my night.
But my goodness, I didn't know how bad the red spider mite event really was! I used to wonder what drove you to find such an innovative and useful solution to them, but I wonder no longer.
And thank you for sharing the concoction: I used it a few months ago back when I noticed the web weaving mites on plants all throughout my house. It was warm so I moved all my plants outside (a bit of a hassle with how many I have haha), sprayed them down with the shower setting on my hose, and after letting them dry sprayed the solution on everything. Safe to say that combination of things did a great job at ridding my plants of the pests. Some of my succulents got some fungal issues from all the water (guess I didn't let them dry off enough) but only one out of the 12 of those actually died, the rest were fine after some pruning.
In the video about the solution you mention that you hadn't really tested them out on other houseplants, but in terms of the mineral oil (which I picked up from my local pharmacy in the form of laxative oil) none of my plants leaves suffered in the 2% concentration. I tested it on almost every leaf type too at the risk of my collection, and all went well luckily. The succulent issue was the only negative result- but if I'm totally honest I don't care too much about my succulents, compared to other, more tropical houseplants.
Anyhow, yes, in my experience the solution is safe for most other houseplants. I sprayed pretty heavily too and all turned out fine. Thank you- you really did save my collection in that situation!

As for the exact brand, I used Walgreen's name brand Mineral Oil laxative- which was a bit funny to buy as I certainly wasn't using it for the intended purpose, but it worked like a charm, and was quite affordable for hiw little I have to use when I use it

What did you do to get them to bloom?
Ive had my orchid for a year... and for 11 of those months I had no flowers... just big pretty green leaves.

    • @walterl322
      @walterl322 3 роки тому

@@beebrown4054 I actually don’t know how, I had the same problem for a while, but now they are really good bloomers, though I’m struggling with dendrobiums. To be honest, I usually water them once a week, but I sometimes forget to do it for a one or two weeks and that might be one of the reasons. But I suspect that it depends largely on their genetics, I have a phalenopsis that just refuses to stop blooming, It blooms for around 7 months, just making new flower spikes all of the time and for the rest 5 months it produces a large leaf, and none of the orchids bloom so much

Dani, you’re ABSOLUTELY correct! And I thank you for the advice bcz I just started my collection about 5 years ago. The same thing happened to me, using the same water! It’s not worth it. Several got a fungus (I think). But with the peroxide and repotting, all survived but one! Well, one of my vandas is still alive, but just doesn’t want to be happy. The roots got all grey and shriveled and segmented. Any advice there? One my favorite Robert Mueller, bright orange flowers. Ugh! I WAS able to replace it last year with a red one. It’s AWESOME! I know what you mean Dani regarding mistakes. I too live in a warm climate 90's with bigh humidity in the summer but good air movement around my plants via several ceiling fans on my lanai. In the winter it imaybe can go down into the high to mid 40's for maybe a week or two a year total. Anyway I have had a heck of a time growing paphs.
The plants always developed root rot or crown rot even though I made sure I didn't get water in the apex. Well, I decided to change all of the 8 plants I had from a bark mix I purchased from repotme to straight sphagnum moss so I can water from the bottom. They looked fine for a short time, then 2 died (I expect they were too far gone anyway). After about 1 month I noticed they stopped growing & looked bad again. I took one out of it's pot & the medium was very wet in the middle & bottom of the plastic well ventilated pot, while the top was dry. Needless to say the roots were not in good condition & I had lost a lot of them.
Back to the bark mix & after checking the others they are all in the repotme mix again. This time I will still water them from the bottom & am hopeful they can bounce back. Paphs are beautiful & I am hoping I can get things right for them. Fingers crossed. : )

Hi, I am a new subscriber, I just ran across your channel and I really appreciated the info. I am also a new Orchid addict. I don't know what it is about orchids, but after my very first one, I had to have more, and more turned into, well a whole lot of them. But now I am worried, I do, or I did plunge my plants, all of my plants, and use the same bucket for all. And what you just said has me really scared, everybody looks good and I've had the orchids or started collecting them for a year now and I have new spikes and even have my first Kiki! Which is very exciting.. but I will no longer plunge my orchids. Now I have done all my other plants like this and let them sit in the water for about 5 min. Now I am wondering if this is a good thing to do with them, eek!! Ok, it's not worth taking a chance to lose even one of my plants. Thank you for your knowledge. God Bless

Hi, what I'm doing is using my clay pots to set my plastic orchid pots in. I haven't found a good source for ornamental pots, they are very expensive. So, I have a way to keep the algae from growing and contaminating the media....and recycling my clay pots. Of course I still need saucers but so far the clay pots are doing the job. No salt nor algae build up on the clay pots.

I love the look of double potting with plastic pots, with a coloured pot on the outside but it has not proven to work for me. I have had the best results with clay pots I think because the quicker drying time counters my tendency to overwater, but! I am in Australia in a Mediterranean climate.

I have one phal orchid I'm trying to help live. The roots weren't really that good and didn't have many. I bought a clear slot pot and the media from repotme. It's been in there for a couple weeks now not sure if it's happy or not. I monitor the water and light... Hope it makes it through. Your channel is the only one I watch! 👍

I have huge issues with spider mites (Brisbane, Aust.) because of the climate and that my collection live outside under the trees, exposed. Best solution I have found so far is:
    1) Move plants well away from their growing area and spray the foliage with a hose first to knock mites off
    2) While waiting for plants to dry, thoroughly hose down the growing area
    3) When the foliage is dry return plants to their growing space. Spray plants and the potting mix with neem oil or similar. The oil works firstly via contact (blocks their breathing holes so they suffocate) and also suppresses their appetite causing them to starve. You will need to treat the plants again in 7-10 days to get rid of any that may have been missed or hatched from eggs after the first treatment.
Since starting this process, which I do in early spring, and again towards the end of summer, I have almost no mites. I did consider purchasing predatory mite eggs but that can get expensive and maintaining the predator mite population can be difficult (However if you have an indoor growing area and only release a few eggs at a time it could be more manageable).

I hear you speak about the ‘bush snail’ in a few of your videos, are these pest native to certain areas ? I’m fairly new to caring for orchids & I live in NY. Not sure if orchids are prone to this pest in certain parts of the world . Thanks ! PS great video 🥰

I am about to lose my favorite first orchid which has grown incredibly well until I have repotted and used a too too strong pesticide. It was dithane and I think this was the reason why it has almost no roots now. What can I do to save her?

One of my phalaenopsis has been blooming literally since early March. The last bud to open, however, has only the column...no throat! It's an otherwise healthy plant. The flower itself is otherwise perfect in color, shape & size relative to the other blooms. It was not damaged...just opened with no throat or lip. How does this happen?

OMG, I see 2 big mistakes I am making: shared water & clay pots!! I thought the clay pots would keep moisture for the air roots, but they are definitely drying out in 2 days (this is Florida, a/c running all the time). So, where did you get the lovely colorful plastic pots? Mostly in stores we see the clay ones or dull colored ones. I love the bright orange, yellow, pink....

So I have a question for you. I repotted an oncidiums from a nursery to bark with just a small amount of moss It’s in a pretty big self watering pot so trying to pour it through that little hole in the corner can be a bit tricky. I suddenly became concerned that I had no moss so I took out some of the bark only to discover that it was all soaking wet. I’ve been waiting in between watering sand since it’s supposed to be self watering what the heck am I doing wrong? I’m afraid of root rot now and since the plant was so big it was difficult to tell what was healthy and what wasn’t. I decided to wait until I need to repot next year but I didn’t think the bark should be soakin wet

I just got my sphagnum moss (finally) and I'm about to start repotting, so as a newbie I have a question: should I use the moss with premade Orchid soil mix, or use the moss with just bark (or something entirely different)?
    Have a good night. 😊

Yes I have found clay pot can cause mediums to dry out. What I have done and this is not for an orchid is seal the pot and paint. As I am very new to it is growing I will use plastic pots. Not my desired choice (plastic not good for our environment) but great for a learner

    Hi Miss Orchid,
I'm not an orchid expert at all. However, I have a question for you. Have you ever tried a thin coating of olive oil on the top of dull Orchid leaves? I had an orchid that was dehydrated and stressed. I followed your suggestions to repot, hydrate and revive the orchid and it did recover. However the old stressed leaves still had a dull finish, the new leaves were nice and shiny. I thought I would try adding a thin layer of olive oil on the top of the old leaves for them to conserve more water and look better. It seems to have worked well. What do you think of this practice? Bad or good? It is natural and appears to be similar to what healthy new leaves are doing themselves.
    Cheers,
    Jon

Also the leaves are very healthy and have a couple dark spikes. Bought miracle mix by Isabelle which the composition consist of bark nuggets from the west, coconut fiber, and limestone. Is this hood to use? I took pictures but no way to show you them.

Hi, I'm a new orchid enthusiast and thanks to your videos I have learned a lot. Thank you. I just heard that you are in Germany or from Germany? I'm looking for good quality substrate in Germany. I would love to purchase from repotme but it is so expensive with the new shipment costs from outside the EU. My orchids still are in their substrate I bought them in. I don't think it's very good but will wait until bloom time is over. But until then I want all applies ready. Pine bark is the most common here but mostly in very bad quality. I did find nice pots at Amazon now but I'm still unsure with the substrate. Organic or anorganic (the bigger round perls), sphagnum moss or not, I'm unsure. Can you help me out?

Geez. I'm a newbie with phals. I just repotted 2 today. Found out that there is a piece of foam in the middle of their roots. Been wondering why the roots are turning yellow and dying till I found out the foam stuck in the middle of the roots. So I took those foam soggy foam cubes and repotted. I shared water with them. I will try to remember not to share water next time.

I have an orchid that grew babies on the old bloom stalk, right in the middle of the stem. I can repot but, since they are in the air, all the roots are currently floating in space. I’m unsure about how to separate them from mom and repot. Please advise me about this process so my babies will thrive.

A newbie orchid owner here that made a huge mistake and I do not know how to fix it. When the flowers fell off, I mistakenly cut the spikes to the soil level. Now, I do not have any new spikes growing anywhere. Only leaves are remaining with two completely dried old tiny spikes. Can this be rectified, or will the plant never flower again?
