Hi Dani I had a rootless orchid for awhile since September. I live in Florida. The leaves were really withered. I have been keeping her moist and warm with good air flow. Two months ago she started growing roots. One of her withered leaves plumped back up. So exciting. You are great! Such great information. Keep it up. 😀😁🤗
I also take my orchids into the bathroom with when I shower. This works very well in a small bathroom in which hot showers are taken. The short periods of high humidity has worked wonders for my plants!!!
Thank you for the calm and sane advice - it really is amazing how much stress phals can rebound from when put into the right environment for the stage of recovery they are in.
This is an excellent video. All my new Phals have gone through transplant shock or stress to the point where, over the first 3-9 months in my care, they lost almost all roots and a number of leaf structures. It’s so common. But so many people don’t understand that, or know what to do. This video gives the complete story as to what and why it happens and should give anyone who looks at it the confidence to understand how to manage the orchid through this delicate time. Truly an exceptional video, fwiw
I am that person as well as some of my work associates give my their orchids and I have had quite the success in having them grow, re bloom, and grow many roots and leaves. Love all your tips and tricks in getting the orchids to grow and not be stressed. Thank you and be safe.
This was like spot on! I had some bad luck and my osmosis system adapter broke, which resulted dehydrated orchid collection... Most of my orchids are miniatures, so they really took this lack of watering really badly. And there is orchid in my collection that has really bad luck, it has been rootless due some odd orange fungus, recovered that, and then my dog knocked it over, it broke some leaves. And even like that was not enough, I dropped the orchid and broke even more leaves. It took this rehydration so badly, that I'm fear of losing her.
Thank you so much! This video was so timely! I've been seeing a lot of posts online (and an equal amount of really bad advice) asking for help with stressed orchids. I'm sharing this everywhere.
Hi Danni, I hope you and your family are safe and healthy. Thank you for making this video, I just re-potted a Twinkle this morning that's in bloom. I was beyond gentle and careful with her roots and she did have lots of new growths. Had to take her out of the pot she came in, no aeration holes and all moss. Fingers crossed! Take care.
I hope this works for one of mine. She completely fell apart. All I have left are 2 big leaves. I had them in a glass tied up and hovering over a very small amount of water (advice I saw on another YT channel). I will try the damp spaghnum instead . Idk if she has a chance at all but we will see. Thanks for being the most interesting, informative "plant" channel out there, Ever!!!!
I wonder who had the orchid that took the longest to recover.. imagine you getting a young sick vanda with stem rot while your in your 20-ties and you just had your newborn, and by the time the tiniest new grow matures enough to bloom you are enjoying the flowers with your grandson in your arms.. That thought kinda warms my heart
definetly needed this! im trying to save an orchid i repotted and lost nearly all its roots, just two roots barely keep the orchid hydrated (and these seem to bee in a very bad shape tho)
Great information! I wish I had known this before I thew out my beautiful orchid that was in severe shock and lost all roots. What are the solid white dots on your plants? Are they bugs? And what about the black spots? I it diseased? Just curious
Thanks for this great info Danni. I was wondering about using a diluted CalMag spray on my phal's little roots, but it seems that's not a good idea currently. It hadn't really occurred to me that a rootless orchid could be dormant for weeks or months but still grow roots later.
Hi Dani, how long should I have my orchids in a temperature drop for reblooming ?Also, how often do you recommend reblooming? Does frequent reblooming decrease the orchid life span? And lastly, what is an orchid’s typical life span or length?
I have my orchid in water more than a year now and it’s been flowering. I just got the chance to repot them in a proper medium so I can put them in a nice terracotta pots😉
Hello I amnew this channel and I love your videos! I also love orchids of courseand plant generally.. I almost watched every single video of you! I am obsessed witch your videos!! Love taking care of my orchids. Great video!!!
Oof! I have an extremely stressed phal that dropped 2 giant leaves and sacrificed a baby leaf after it suffered cold damage (my bad). I have been wondering if it got stem rot and would die quickly after losing 2 leaves, but it keeps on living. Most of the massive root system died off last year, and since the cold damage it lost several more, but it’s got a couple really nice big ones. It is hard for me to tell what is going on at the stem, because there is some black, but it’s all firm, and it looks like it’s trying to put out several new root tips. I definitely need to stop fertilizing and use distilled water (difficult to get bottled water at this time, wish I knew of an RO faucet i could access to fill a bottle). But otherwise I have tried to follow what i’ve learned on other videos. Trying to make sure it gets enough indirect light. Humidity is not great but since it has roots in a mix of sphagnum and repotme mix, and a cover pot, I don’t want to promote any potential bacteria or rot accelerating by also bagging it.
When I buy a new orchid and they seem very dry, I will place the plant, pot and all, into a bowl and soak it for about 10 minutes, then let it drain. I also do this when I water them as needed. Is that a good idea? Thanks for all you do!
Ok I need some help. I have had this beautiful phalenopsis orchid for 4 years and grew so much confidence watching your videos so I could repot it. I repot my orchid and trimmed the dead roots and the root system looked amazing.... then, instead of spraying the roots with hydrogen peroxide like you’ve said, I accidentally sprayed with white vinegar and I flushed the roots and medium but the roots I can see popping out of the medium are shriveled now. Is my orchid dying or is there any way to save it now?!
Hi there! If I could give you more thumbs up I will.. love this video, I wish I could have seen it way back but is never too late. Very well explain thank you very much for sharing your knowledge is very well appreciated!
Hmm I’ve seen video on here of people doing the water cup thing and it worked! But I’m doing it on my orchid and I feel like it is making it worse. I’m gonna try this bag thing
That means you haven't stressed your orchid out enough.. Which is a good thing. My colleagues orchid went through the ringer with them repotting it into pebbles then sand from the nursery. I took it home to try save it and repot it into bark chips. I checked it today and repot it into a smaller pot and removed the keiki. It had one root, and not sure it will survive. it actually did get really stressed because there was so much root loss when I checked and pot it in a too big incorrect pot. So hopefully this time it's in better conditions. It has a terminal spike as well so I'm sure that contributed to it getting a keiki. After I repot it for the third time it made a keiki.
Hi Danny. Wow epiphany moment. Soft water !! Perhaps over fertilizing ? Another brainstorm you've shared with me. I would imagine many of your experienced growers would, DUH !!!? 😬. Slow learner am I.
Thank you, I actually "save my oldest orchid but his sister is rootless and I plant it media thinking it start growing new roots... I gonna try yours tips to save her!
Hi. I love your videos. However, I still have a question. I have an orchid, 2years old. Right now the last spike is there with the last 3 flowers... The old leaves fell off, that means there are two green leaves left... I noticed a small purple spike? At the bottom ob the leaves. What should I do? Should I Cut the old spike even though it has flowers on it?
Hi Ms Dani. Melanie here from the Philippines. I accidentally put my orchids in the window ledge and it fell😢. There are few leaves were damage. Is there a way to treat them?
I am an orchid beginner and have one (species unknown) that I purchased three years ago. It has extremely long roots that have wrapped around the small 2” square pot that is the original. I believe it has cold damage however it has new growth (baby plant) and is producing a flower spike. I just treated it with hydrogen peroxide and don’t know what to do next. Cut roots? Repot? Please help!
What kind is your rootless phalaenopsis. It seems like I have the same. It has the same specs on the leaves. It has been in the "ICU" setup for a year 😔. It only has 2 aerial roots that is keeping her hydrated.
Dear Dani, what if roots stoped growing after a while. I have a cattleya freshly repotted in this situation. Is there any chance the roots will begin to grow again? Thank you.
Very informative. Where do I place my recovering orchid . Warm place like kitchen window? My window receives at least 6hrs of very warm light. Or in s cool place?
Danny what if I don’t have any spag moss for my phal after I look to see if I have no roots system which I don’t think I will have any roots after I check it out I’ve been so busy with taking care of my mom since I’m her caregiver now it’s her phal n I don’t want to lose the phal bc I love 💕 her n all plants 🪴 n I try really hard to take care of all our plants pls let me know if that’s ok if I don’t have that moss
This happened to a mini phal I got on discount. Fortunately it didn't lose all its roots and has now bounced back wonderfully. I seem to have a problem with an oncidium, though! It lost a very old bulb which seemed normal. But... The 2 center leaves seem to have rotten and created black mold! Is there one of your videos that could point me to the right direction into the reason and treatment for it! Thanks for all your hard work and beautiful videos, your voice is so soothing!
Can you save a phal that only has roots? My miniature phal orchid randomly lost all it's leaves but has 3 nice green hard healthy roots. For not its sitting in a glass with sphagnum moss, is it saveable?
1. I don't know how to propagate roots to one of the orchid stem I received from my friend. Help me. 2. One of my vanda orchid has got thr root rot what should I do?
All so helpful, I’m just slightly confused though, but I think the you said the answer is no. Are we suppose to water the orchid when it has no roots? If the answer is yes, then what is the best to water? Thank you! Best 🌱✌🏼
MissOrchidGirl ahhhh thank you for the response 💚! Will do! But what if there is a sad (perhaps dying) root though, I would say alive because it’s not dried, is better to cut it off or leave it? 🙏 thank you!!!!!
Hi, the lights are 2 random LED bulbs, the magic is in setting a suitable white balance value on your camera, for the type of light you use and that needs to be set for each type of light separately 😉
I just want to share my experience with you I took my orchid because it was dying and I took it and hang it on a tree just sprayed with a little water and I left it there for about 2 weeks maybe and when I went out and looked at it I decided to take it down it was growing another leave I am so happy
Hi Danny , I have a question, there are little tiny insects in my orchids ( in the medium) is that normal or how can I get rid of them or what should I do? Thank you
Hi, those insects are most probably springtails and they are really useful :) Here's a recent video I made about them ua-cam.com/video/MKdf6EQSj-U/v-deo.html
5:30 My one Orchid is actually better looking than the one in this video now that Im comparing them. I actually was following the most important advice of leaving it alone and being patient without even realizing it. I thought the one with only one little root was in major destress but actually looking at it compared to the one with No Roots its actually VERY good cause it has One Root and looking closely I have discovered A BUNCH of Tiny Tiny Root Buds all around the bottom. I DID however do the thing of putting it in water. I was like OMG DRINK!! My Orchid Was Like I ONLY HAVE ONE ROOT WTF!! X'D Whats WORST is I KNEW too much water was Bad but I was kinda panicking and I have never had an orchid before and I was given two that were already sick as gifts and I wanted to keep at least ONE Alive. But I sat it and forgot about it for so long all the water evaporated away so I will now follow These Steps and use humidity to help it since despite my madness its fought so hard to stay alive; The LEAST I can do is follow these steps and help it in the way thats Best for it.
How is that orchid doing now, more than a year later? I have a phal without roots atm and I’m trying to keep it alive (was my neighbours’, but she gave it to me to try and save lol).
Hi Lynn, did you also try amazon and ebay, or repotme and orchid nurseries? Well you can also only use bark chips, it will work ok but you will just have to water it more often. Moss is a great help when we need more water retention, but bark chips are a good medium too in lack if moss ☺️
Buna Dani.
Oh and one more thing what if the poor thing is alive yet stressed, but it has sort of one live pitiful looking root do we leave it alone and do this same method?
MissOrchidGirl ok thank you! I’m afraid I’m not having any luck and I think I’m shocking the heck out of what’s left of my 2 orchids. Trying to save them though, but I had gotten nervous because I tried do a semi-hydroponic whatever, but I’m afraid I made things much worse 😓. Plus I’m impatient. I think they both got a little moldy like you mentioned and I panicked and tried to address this. But maybe I should have just left them alone. The other roots had died though, sigh. I’m going to go back to what you had recommended and I’ll try to leave these poor things alone. I don’t have a green thumb and I won’t buy orchids anymore since I tend to kill the poor babies 😩. Anyway thank you thank, you thank you for the info and reply! You have lovely orchids and they always fascinate me. But I’ll stick to photographing them and not adopting them. Be safe, best! 💚✌🏼
@MissOrchidGirl. Thank you very much for your videos, they’re very helpful to me, I was know as the plant killer 😉😓 but not any more thanks to your help. I repotted 3 orchids about a weeks ago, how long do I have to wait to fertilize them?
when your orchid has no roots, or just a tiny one, should you keep the medium damp? I wasn't able to find moss, just a orchid mix at Lowes. I just wanna save her! lol.
You wouldn't happen to have an ID on that first purple striped mini phal? I have that same orchid in bloom right now, and would love to know what it is. I've kind of figured I'd never find an ID, and it just drives me nuts.
If I move my orchid from the table to a stand (that's within 2 ft of eachother) each morning for natural indirect sunlight, is that going to stress them out too much? I recently repotted them after purchase and one has lost all of its blooms.
Hi, if there are no blooms or buds, or a spike growing, it shouldn't be a problem, but it sounds a bit hassling. Maybe you can make them a permanent home in the area with more light sonehow ☺️
@@MissOrchidGirl Thank you for responding! I will implement your recommendation as one does have a spike with two remaining blooms. .. on another note, I recently had to cut back the spike of a different orchid to preserve the mother. In an effort to save such a healthy youngster, I dipped her in root solution and planted her in her own pot. This was ~2 days ago, and she seems fine so far. Is there a particular video I should watch for further advice? (sorry if it is annoying to ask directly, i'm sure you get a lot of inquiries) In any case, thanks again for your advice and content!

My orchids actually do better in the bathroom. I have a couple that just stay there. When I moved them it appeared to just stress them out.

My one Orchid is actually better looking than the one in this video now that Im comparing them.
I don't kno what to do. I tried to buy some NZ spaghnum moss. Unfortunately every where is sold out.. Dani, any tips?
Hi Lynn, did you also try amazon and ebay, or repotme and orchid nurseries? Well you can also only use bark chips, it will work ok but you will just have to water it more often. Moss is a great help when we need more water retention, but bark chips are a good medium too in lack if moss ☺️
@@MissOrchidGirl Dani, I've tried repotme, Amazon,...but all sold out. I was hoping to find another supplier but no luck yet, sold out everywhere...
I've looked everywhere, apparently no on has it in stock due to the covid...
hey can i water my orchid with drinking water?
Hello what kind of fertilizer for arcade arcade
Buna Dani.
Oh and one more thing what if the poor thing is alive yet stressed, but it has sort of one live pitiful looking root do we leave it alone and do this same method?
You can pot that one directly, just water when the medium seems like it's drying out :)
Hi, about a month is ok, or until you see the roots growing in very slow growing cases :)
when your orchid has no roots, or just a tiny one, should you keep the medium damp? I wasn't able to find moss, just a orchid mix at Lowes. I just wanna save her! lol.
Look around,Lowes carry Sphagnam moss or go to Home depot
You can order it on Amazon🌱
I’ve had 4 orchids over the course of 5 years and still they are not re blooming 😢 they have nice leaves though!
R they getting enough light? X
How are those tiny orchids called!
What If u dont have moss
Can you help me these are my first ones. Just got in the mail a few days ago.
They are limp
👍🏼👍🏼
I killed my orchid and now i wish to save it with you
