    Wow, that was great. I learned a lot and had the nerve to repot mine. I too found a foam plug inside my bark medium. I had a set of leaves on the flower stalk with a single root about 2 in long. I cut in and planted it with the mother plant in the bark. I can't wait to see how it grows now.

    Paula from Mexico. I hate to tell you what I did with my first Phaleonopsis my husband gave me for a gift. I had no idea how to take care of it. It was in a plastic pot. I hated plastic pots. So I put it in a decorative big pot and put bark all around it, I tried cutting the plastic pot, taking some pieces out and I got some live moss to put on top. Someone told me you can’t repot it while blooming, the person told me to water it once a week, give it a shower. So Tuesday every week I took it outside an used the garden hose on it. Put it back in kitchen corner window. I did this for 4 years. It was a big white flower with a magenta lip. She bloomed beautifully every year. Never had any bugs of any kind. My husband passed away. I was determined this plant will live. I still have it. I made all my mistakes on it. It has survived me. I started looking at, how to repot videos, because I had no idea how to, I never even saw her roots before. I have reported it. My first mistake repotting her is she had a lot of roots, so I cut them all back. That set her back for a while. I made other mistakes with her. Now I have 67 different orchids. Still make mistakes!!!!!!

    Hello my old friend!!! Yes, I still check in with my people. My orchids are beautiful! You know I grow outside. I now use, coal, a little bit of bark, tiny bits of sphagnum moss, but 90% Leca. Now, in our everyday day raining season, they don't rott. I found that garlic is the orchid miracle!!! Put I garlic head in the blender peels and all. Then you stain it donk your orchids in that water for 30 minutes. Repeat two days later. Dead orchids come to life. I also do the same thing but with bananas. God bless you my friend.❤👵🙏

    Hello!
    CLASSROOM UPDATE. We now have a few small orchids hanging in globes in front of my classroom window. We have very light beige construction paper over the window to provide filtered light to the orchids. I have one cattleya in a globe with premium orchid moss and a dendrobium Keiki in another globe. I put a few lightweight pebbles in the moss to keep air circulation present. We even have a circulating fan to simulate the wind flow. Of course, my students are soooo interested in each orchid and globe. I would not be so brave to try using globes if I had not been watching your tutorials. Thank you for guidance and for posting this very helpful repotting video. Sincerely from Georgia!

    Hallo my darling friendy. .. I just really love your videos. You guide others step-by-step and just make it so easy to follow. The very first video of yours I watched was when you repotted an orchid outside. I must say I have watched it several times, plus another repot video you made a little while back, and guess what .. I had the confidence to do mine last week. On your recommendation, I waited until Spring here in South Africa, and 'voila' it was all systems go.
    One orchid I repotted was an adopted one, and 'Oh my,' the sphagnum moss plug was not just in a tiny lil basket, but was the medium in its entirety. It was so compact, I was surprised the roots could go anywhere at all. I really had to ease it out gently but with time it was a case of 'mission accomplished.' She is a beautiful white Phal and has a new spike, so I am waiting in anticipation.
    I am still waiting for my precious 'Amy' Phal to put out a new spike but will just be patient. (Do you recall she is a white Phal with the pink tones on the under-side of the petals. I can't wait for her to bloom again).
    So almost all have been repotted and I even did one for an elderly couple that I 'care' for once a week, and that one is really looking happy now.
    Your orchid roots looked really good and the leaves are in very good shape. Well done on you for a successful repot.
    Thank you my special friend for yet another special and concise video, and for giving me the confidence to repot mine. Lots of love to the star of the show, to the camera-gal, and a special hug for Buddy.🐶💝🌹

Please keep me posted on your white Phal...I feel like I'm her proud Godmother. lol! And tell Phal 'Amy' that I'm rooting for her, and I know she'll spike for you.
      Honestly, I'm still smiling at your comment. When I first started growing orchids, I didn't want to repot. Oh my, that seemed like climbing Mount Everest to me! I'm so happy that you're potting up all your orchids and having success with them. :) Thanks so much for sharing your story...that's why I make videos, is to help wonderful people like you.

    I need your HELP!! I live in Arkansas relatively new w/phals & currently have emergency!! I had ordered some medium through repot me & either it didn’t do well OR I didn’t repot correctly OR I don’t understand the environment in my home! _ long story short they were orchids on sale and I have learned that they prob weren’t gonna make it anyway. So I wasn’t gonna get anymore. But you KNOW I did!! 2 large - 2 small. These were SO much better and I actually left them alone for most part & all blooms off. So I was excited that I could repot… but now I don’t have enough of that media and I have 4 NAKED orchids - and I live in very small town. We have Home Depot but only have the large orchid bark!! 🙀😳😩😫I also now am unsure of pot sizes to use and generally just freaking OUT!! I have watched your videos and many others and now I am just confused! And I don’t know what to do! What do I do with them until I can go get the yukky bark - um just freaking out & you are SO calming! Not expecting you to even get back with me but if by chance you do/can - could you possibly give me some advice or a specific video of yours to watch?! Or even say a prayer for them and maybe me too?! 😂 I would be forever grateful!! 🙏🏼

      @@julesmarable3965 hi! First off, there's a steep learning curve to growing orchids, and trying to find the right media is a big part of it. I'm sponsored by the Orchid Supply Store, and they ship pretty quickly. Call them and tell them what you need. You'll need a small bark for the minis and a medium bark for the standards. Order several 3 to 5 inch clear orchid pots. See which one suits the size of your orchids best. In the meantime, place the orchids back in the pots they came in and soak just the roots in filtered water for an hour or so a day until you get your new bark. Don't soak the leaves or they will rot. Hope that helps and happy growing! 😇💖

      @@OrchidWhisperer bless you!!! I just now saw this - oh trust me I know!! I watched SO many videos & learned JUsT enough to be confused & actually dangerous!! When I ordered the bark/small rock/big white things sort of like perlite - I also ordered a variety of the pots! I didn’t think I had enough to repot them all - so I did all the removal of bad roots etc & then I had all roots soaking in the filtered room temp water checked the stuff & said well I’ll just attempt. The actual potting up is THE worst part for me. Everyone makes it look SO easy and I struggle and end up somehow no matter what with NO roots showing & with a 2-3 weeks they are on their way out and when I try to rescue - I am met with more rotted roots even tho this past month I barely even water because I was going by “look at roots and if they are still lush & green DO NOT WATER!! 🤣🤣🤣 I truly believe it has something to do with temp/environment of this old house and I don’t think they get enough light but I can’t make that better unless I make new windows! And well not an option!! I just hate it because I love them SO much & I always have great attention to detail & have had a mostly green thumb all my life. Thank you for your response!!what sort of gives me some hope is that w/o hearing from you yet and being so unsure - I actually had done what you said to do!!! Soaked just the roots!! The repotting went the best it ever had and I can actually see some roots!! But now I have the issue of watering!! (Oh and I learned back in April all about the leaves as well as using edge of paper towel if I happen to get ANY h2o in the crown!!) do you mind when you can answering ONE more question?? How do YOU water yours?! (When I got these beginning of October they were gorgeous healthy etc. I’m getting them to the protected room away from my cats - I bumped a flower spike & it broke right off. I was crushed - but even MORE determined to use all that I learned several months before. So I just potted it up and soaked for 10 mins and then all flowers off ALL other dropped over night. I cut the flower spikes in the right place that several days later - there was actually some growth I could see!! I was estatic!! The one I had repotted first looked great but there were a LOT of dead roots that had to go - so when I potted up - the roots were short & now I know I used a way too big pot based on the leaves and NOT the roots - I got the itch today that I HAD to inspect the roots. Well I had NOT overwatered in fact o was sure I didn’t water enough (that media dries out SO fast but I am terrified of root rot!🤒) when it as out in open - my heart sunk…some were more rotted - so after I trimmed off bad parts - for such a big leafed plant - it didn’t have many roots at all and biggest one being 3-4 inches. So THIS time I picked a much smaller pot and I can’t really see roots A but I will traumatize them to death if I keep messing with!! Aahhhh - I’m sorry for such a long comment. Please just share how YOU water yours and I will do my best and gain experience and knowledge like you said. (My last go round in April - started with one I had had a couple of years but I really just ignored it. Then I started watching videos A and well down the rabbit hole I went!! You know those channels who use the garlic water ?? lol - well I learned all about the roots - so I started in trimming off the bad - well by the time I was finished it didn’t really have ANY GOOD roots left & rawly I only had one good leaf to work with! 🙄so I searched if it was possible to grow any roots from a leaf -that’s how I found the garlic water channel!! And they also had the turn it upside down in glass container with some of the leaf reading in the water - and like magic! After all that roots started budding out!! I was THRILLED and was feeling a bit too good about it. The story gets longer and longer but I made the mistake of “ooh I need more of them to work with!! Ended up w/3 more (that I now know were doomed as they had been at store a while & were maybe a few $ off reg price A and well here flowers were over - root rot on most all and crown rot on the other. Of course I tried the garlic water and upside down stuff but nothing worked and slowly I lost them all! So it’s a touchy subject for me!! I have never reached out to any content creators but when I had run across YOUR channel - I was very excited to learn you are in TN! So I kept in back of my mind that SURELY our zones etc were “similar!” So today when I got into panic mode - I searched you out!! You make it ALL look so easy & wonderful! I know it has taken you some time to get all your knowledge and experience “dialed in” to your lovely room! My windows are high up on house & maybe house from 1970’s and just hideous. They’re in INDIRECT light but I just don’t think it’s enough. Thank you for reading this far if you have! I will let you know in ages weeks their status. But these I only got beginning of Oct. so they only lasted a month?!
      No matter what I truly enjoy your videos - soothing calming and confident voice & wow at the end the prayer or scripture! I will be watching success or no success - but in the interim of the two orchid batches - my bff from high schools mom FINALLY gave me one of her African violets!! And I will just share that - MAYBE I am AV gal and not orchid (😭😭😭) I wish I could show you how much it is thriving!! A entire NEW plant has emerged under the LoVELY lush green furry leaves!! (It was blooming when I brought home then all do sudden lost ALL blooms! So she told me I needed to start removing some of the leaves (as you have to do w/them ANYWAY) but instead of tossing like she does / the leaf was beautiful and I could not throw away! So I put in tiny deal of water and hoped it would root. She said she didn’t think it would be successful - and lo and beHOLD!! Teeny heathy awesome leaves appeared so after a few weeks I threw in some dirt and prayed for the best- and it just keeps on expanding! Even the mother leaf STILL looks great!! So I am excited on that - but now I have have NO idea what to do from there as it will HAVE to go in a larger pot SOON!! 😊 sorry I took so much time and thank you for allowing me to share! If you are still with me - please please share how you recommend watering the orchids! And do you water once a week No mater what or do you look at roots and wait until they start to look silvery?! Many thanks and blessing to you!! 💚💚💚

    Happy Sunday! Might i suggest a repotting bin? I've found that it makes the whole repotting and cleanup process a breeze! I usually use a large, old tupperware container or even an old cookie sheet with a lip around the edges. I'm a messy repotter especially if I'm repotting a new purchase, i tend to fling old media everywhere! LOL But Miss Orchid Girl uses heavy duty shop bins which is something I'm probably going to purchase pretty soon. :)

    Thank You so much for your Expert ways with Orchids & Orchiata Bark! Currently repoting my first experiment with Orchiata since you first discovered it. Sunflower seeds sprouted in the bark just removed. It had grown fairly well has short root tips(air-roots),seems in active growth yet really not many roots except green tips. All had rotted; Can Orchiata help keep it moist enough for regrowth of long roots? It did great so far which I find surprising? Located in foothills of Colorado. Will be using led grow lights/humidifier for winter time as since April 2018. I still feel hesitant on Spag even Better-Grow. Trying one with holes in the plastic/peanuts;so far no Mildew smell which had been the problem. Was thinking the Dolimite was the key for today's current one having survived so far? Thank You!

      @OrchidWhisperer  6 років тому +1

      Hi and thanks so much for your kind words! Orchiata bark is really good at retaining both moisture and fertilizer, so I think your orchid is going to do really well. If it has green root tips, that's a great sign. All of my orchids have done so well in this bark, and the dolomite gives it that extra calcium and magnesium boost that keeps the plant from going into transplant shock. Thanks again for sharing and I wish you lots of growing success!

      ThanX so much for your reply. This one hung on practically leaning out of the clear pot by the dead roots! Named it "Leaning Tree." Ha! Even sprouting a 2 1/2 inch upper branch. Find it almost bizarre! North area,kept moist,misted both leave sides. Bail creek water which I sink all my orchids in. Tried your suggestion just today Guess Orchiata helped. Never had been fertilized till I tried your Cal-Mag-Epsom Salts. Now upright again yet wonder can new bottom roots form? I feel it probably is Orchiata which I never had used till your Great Find. Well I wished I hadn't repotted my phals, a couple of months ago since I didn't know about the soaking and how that pevents damage to the roots! I guess they were blessed, or maybe just love my AM greetings, because all 5 are growing a new leaf, new roots and some indications of activity on a couple of spikes. I did get the Orchiata and love that bark. My question is, I wondered what that "basket thing" was because I have one that is on an otherwise very happy phal. Should I soak the bottom and do the tedious teasing out of the "material" and repot? Half of the roots are out of the bark because of the basket interfering in placement.

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  6 років тому

      Hi! The basket holds a plug of moss or foam while the orchid is a seedling. I would repot this Phal and remove the plug if the Phal isn't spiking. If it is, I would leave it alone until Spring. I've had the Phal in this video for over a year, and it's done fine. (But it's out of bloom now, and it needed to be repotted.) Congratulations on your other orchids, it sounds like they're thriving under your care! Happy growing!

    I so admire you for your orchids. However, I have a question. I live in SW Florida and my orchids are outside throughout the year and are living in lava rock. Mostly phalaenoptis orchids which are not seeming to like the lava rock too much after the second year in rock. Since my summers are very wet, I thought lava rock would be better than normal orchid mix because of drainage. I am about to repot them and need your help in which potting medium might be called for to keep the phals happier. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks

    Hi, can you help me. I am fairly new to Orchid care. I have a couple now...I have had one for about 2 years. Has bloomed twice, however it started to show signs and I repot in moss.
    It didn't do well. I checked again. Changed the pot and saw that all the roots were rotted. I think I suffocated it with the moss. Is that possible? Is bark better? Can you do a video repot in Moss? Thank you so much

      Hi! I have a playlist on my channel about repotting...with several different scenarios including repotting in bark. And yes, it's possible to suffocate orchid roots with either too much moss or the wrong kind of moss. Orchids need to be repotted in orchid grade moss or they won't do well. Merry Christmas! :)

    I am having issues again with gnats. I have repotted again after repotting into a new pot for first time about a month ago . I saw gnats so after spraying with peroxide and still seeing them flying. I have a pot with cider vinegar and soap in it. It has been attracting gnats to solution. But still they are flying around. I cut some mushy roots again this time ,very few of them. My new mix is fresh, bark orckiata, charcoal and perlite. I watered with seaweed extract and cal mag,but I did not soak pot or mix before repotting. Hopefully you can help me. I am in apt. Orchids have a very good southern facing window.

    I have re-potted 3 orchids in bark for orchids. When I noticed one wasn't doing well I removed the clear pot and bark to find my orchid had no roots when it previously did. I have only been watering once a week or less often. What am I doing wrong to make these roots die so fast? I have been reading about how to care for an orchid that has no root but how do I prevent this in the first. I have the black tea that is very diluted to water with and now using that for soaking it (wet/dry).

    I'm really surprised at how good the root system is on Phal. Brother Pirate King because of the existing moss plug (oops!). I would have expected quite a few rotted roots around the center of the plant where the plug was. You don't usually leave your new phals in their original media as long as you have with Phal. BPK, do you? I know it's going to thrive in the Orchiata bark and I'm glad that the weather is staying warm (autumn weather? what's that, LOL?) so that it has a chance to adapt to its new home. :)

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  6 років тому +1

      Hi Caro! This was actually a foam plug, not a moss plug. I didn't realize it until I finished the video and I looked at it, because I was surprised there were no rotten roots. The foam plug wasn't waterlogged like the moss plugs get. Anyway, I was pleased there was no damage and the orchid is obviously happy. II can't believe this orchid has been in constant bloom or spike for over a year! :) But I'm glad I got it into new Orchiata bark. It will have plenty of time to establish roots before it turns cold. Blessings to you and T & S from A & B, who is taking a big nap after running errands with me today.:)

    • @tobiesmom
      @tobiesmom 6 років тому

      Oh, I'm so glad it was a foam plug and not a moss one! I don't think I've ever seen a foam one before? Are they very common? Well, it's a rainy day up here today. I was able to pressure wash my gutters and roof (where moss was growing on it!). I borrowed my neighbor's pressure washer and sort of got carried away as I ended up pressure washing my porch, sidewalk, and driveway as well. I had lots of moss growing on my driveway because it is so shaded. I hope I don't have a high water bill next month! Ha! Ha! Blessings from C & (T & S) who are doing what they do best - nap!
