ok im really confused rn amanda: tombow dual brush pen is a great beginner brush pen litterally everyone else : i dont recommand the tombow dual brush pen for beginners as u need lots if control me: confusion level 100
• abigail lmao ok so basically if you like a big difference in your up and down strokes they’re perfect. but if you’re a beginner they’re a little harder to use due to the large nib. it only takes a week or so to get used to though so if you’re going for a thicker calligraphy style then i would try a couple of them and practice and then go from there
It’s preference.. lots of people say they don’t recommend while others do. Try one of each and see which you prefer. If your starting out I would just start with black anyways before worrying about color. Sometimes unfortunately you have to try things out yourself to see what you actually like versus going off just what others say for this exact reason. There’s a beginner lettering set on a amazon for about $10 and it comes with tombow dual brush pen in black as well as the hard and soft fudenoske pen pencil eraser etc. check that out
when i started out, i used tombow and it was a pretty good beginner brand for me! maybe you should try different brush pens to see what you feel like works best for you :)

that used to happen to me,, you should try crayons markers, that’s how I learned to “control” my tombows better therefore my tombows don’t really fray anymore
Sadly just like a normal brush. A pen with a brush will wear down. Hairs will get scraggly and ink don't be as flowing with ink. Cut off loose hairs and don't press too hard with the brush and it should prolong the life
I'd say to avoid the sakura koi brush pens as they fray terribly quick! Mine frayed into a thick stub after one month of using it which is absolutely heart breaking 😭 also if you're concerned about the pens being water proof, the tombow fudenosuke is the most water proof while the pentel ones as well as the sakura pigmas will smudge when it comes in contact with water! Imo the ZIG Brushables are better than tombow dual brush pens as they don't fray as quick and also makes a prettier gradient while writing. The artline stix also makes a pretty gradient but is a little too thick for me. I can't say anything for the rest of the pens she's mentioned here as I've not tried them out :D Tl;dr my favs are the tombow fudenosuke for regular lettering and the zig brushables for fancier, coloured lettering!
Enyze96 .e n i C: e with the kuretake, if you want waterproof ranges delve into some of the other brush pens they sell like the Mangaka or calligraphy ranges. The clean colour/ Kalediolines are designed to be used with water and to blend into one another so if your going to use water but dont want them to bleed then it's best not to use them. The Faber-Castells tend to be paper dependent when it comes to water resistance (as with thier entire range) but any ink that's alcohol resistant against things like copics and shin han markers is usually the best option in obtaining a waterproof ink. Sadly waterproof ink doesn't come in a large range of colours, unlike waterbased ink only, some only do black or grey, where's a few do brown and purple as they're more used for illustration rather than calligraphy. An alternative is a dip pen which takes some practice and time to use properly or a calligraphy bushes kit with an ink block. But that's if you want to get right into the art of it.
I personally love the Sakura Koi brush pens since they're quite flexible and nice to use. I've had mine for a few months and the tips aren't anymore frayed than any other brush pen I've owned. Perhaps if you're heavy handed or I just don't use mine as oftenly
Maybe you're heavy handed? I bought mine when I was in Grade 11 and I'm currently in Grade 12 (And yes I use the pen frequently since I love the color) and I don't really have any fraying problems with the pen.
ive been trying to figure out which brush pens to get my mom so this was fantastic and extremely helpful!! i love how you explain what you like abt it and you dont assume everybody looks for the same things. love you and keep going!!!
Different people's preferences are so interesting!! I know so many people who love tombows, but I tried to write with them and find them very unpleasant to write with, but I love zig clean colors! You have to write slower since they're harder to control but they're so smooth 😍😍😍
Zig Clean Colors are my new favorite but I use them watercolor-style, sometimes also for lettering. Those and the Ecolines are more for painterly applications than lettering in my opinion. Everyone has a favorite.
I don't like the tombow dual tip... I literally can't handle the sound they make and the nib turns to crap way too soon to cost what they do. I do like the fudenoske though.
@@jessicat3762 I agree, the Tombow tips wear out way too soon and to me they aren't cheap for the low quality but everyone has their likes and dislikes.
for the next stationary showdown, you should compare gel pens. lmao. i don really know what pen is the best so i is nice to see wat u think about some gel pens Amanda! ilysm
I like the fact that your sponsorsed video’s fit your content. It seams really natural and is truly helpful for the kind of people that watch your videos. Keep up the good work!
I have been using the Softip Tombow Fudenosuke about 2 years now when doing japanese kanji writing and this review pretty much confirmed that I should stick too it. the only reason I was looking elsewhere as a color change would be awesome just for some variety but the size of the tips is really nice for the fine writing some kanji requires.
I prefer the hard tip fudenosuke or the le plumme II brush. But to be completely honest, I prefer using dip pens and nibs, but that’s because I enjoy doing copperplate more than modern calligraphy. Ahahah great video
I think your grip on the pen robs you of a lot of control. You have sort of a "rollerball grip", but if you gripped the pen more like you would a fountain pen or a dip pen or an actual paint brush, you could probably balance the nib better, giving you more control of line width and variation.
i feel like there’s more benefit with a dual tip w/ two brush tips than one brush tip + a fine tip, is that the case? like how often do you use the other side of the tombow dual?
When I first used real-brush brush pens (the Muji one), it was really hard to use because it’s so different. It was also really frustrating that the brush would fan out when writing in circular motions. I never used it again until I accidentally bought the Clean Colour instead of Brushables. This was so much easier to use than my first real brush, but it still took some time to get used to. I think if you’re still new to a real brush, start small by using just the tip first, and go really, really slow, it actually helps. What I like about real-brush brush pens are that they don’t fray so easily like brush pens and you can kinda adjust the bristles.
Amanda, I can't thank you enough. You have inspired me to make my own bullet journal. You also help EVERYONE to know the best materials and you give us new spread ideas every month. You are so sweet and teach all of us your tips and tricks to bullet journaling. I really hope I get to meet you someday, you are such an inspiration! Did I mention that you are incredibly skilled in art. ilysm ❤️💛💚💙💜💗💖❣️💕💘💝🖤😍😘
Has anyone else experienced their fudenosuke bleeding through the paper occasionally? First I thought it was the paper - I was using a Moleskine before and I am using Leuchtturm at the moment and it didn't happen for a couple of months, but recently my fudenosuke overflew and bled through my Leuchtturm journal as well. Do I just have a faulty one or does anyone else experiencing this occasional bleedthrough?
That's happened to me before, I was doodling in a workbook during class and when I flipped the page it bled! I guess it's just an occasional gush of ink, the next day it stopped bleeding...
Will you be doing an update to this video with newer pen options? I just watched your stationary organization and you have so many different pens now.😀
I definelty have fraying problems, but it is because tomboys fray more with left handers like me. I have a tombow fudenosuke review I would really love for you to check out, it may answer your question
I just found out about brush pens this summer, but knew nothing about them... this video took care of that, and I definitely want to get one! Thank you so much for posting this!
I have found this useful as an entrant to the craft, just to see the different styles naturally coming out of each pen. Parameters like flexibility and control don't mean anything to me yet but this video helped me figure out I prefer the look of thinner lettering and more opaque pigment. That has narrowed down which pens I'll be looking for! :)
I think to beat the intimidation of starting a bullet journal is to go on Pinterest and find lots of inspiration that you can copy from. Go in knowing that you’re going to make a lot of mistakes, but you’re going to learn what you like and don’t like. Once you’ve got your foundation, you just build from there and can get more creative with your spreads with washi tape or doodles or whatever is your style. Hope this helps!!
what i like about artline stix is its more on the cheap side but what i dislike about it is because it's a marker-like pen, it bleeds so much. other thank that. i like them. though not as much as the tombow dual brush pens. those were what i used to actually practice and make my calligraphy better and neater. it isn't really something a beginner should use since it's expensive and you'll be practicing writing so many times and it would be a waste of ink. but it actually helped me get used to the pressure, correct thickness and all of that.
I use the Ecoline brush pens for art in my sketchbook, i do little watercolour paintings with them, just blend things out with a water brush, it creates the same effect as watercolours but the colours are generally brighter and more modern. I like that they're so easy to apply and easy for transport as well, it's kind of a no mess watercolour option.
Amanda , plz if u can find (cuz I cant) give the link of brush pens with all colors and not only black i just love your reviews and want to but the best you suggest💜😁🥺
I have a few Farber Castell and I like them because they have a soft but small tip, however I dislike the black pen a lot because it isn't really pitch black but looks very yellow?
YAY I LOVE YOUR STATIONARY SHOWDOWNS!! You inspired me to bullet journal and I bought one and I'm absolutely in love with it thank you. ❤️ I even bought some Crayola super tips!
can you show us exactly which colors you have for the tombow dual brush pens? I know you listed a lot of the ones you use in videos and that's where I got most of my info on which colors would be good but still I would love to know which are your current ones in a video or something like that :D Could also be an instagram story or whatever :D
I have a question It’s literally my only problem How do you control, how the brush pen um bends ? When you write ‘e’ or “c”, simply when you need to make your brush pen move to the left
In terms of price, if you have the money, get the tombow dual brush pens. A pack of 10 if 29.99 at Michael's where I live. I got a discount tho. I believe a 14 dollar discount. For cheaper ones, eh, idk. But, the Tombows are worth it.
Super useful comparison, thank you! I just want to mention that the Kuretake Clean Color comes in two versions: Real Brush and Faux Brush, which is a felt tip type brush. The FB is significantly cheaper than the Real, too, but afaik they come in all the same colors!
I do too! I use tombows in my spreads all the time, and did in fact in my last July spread, I think if you enjoy her videos you would like mine too. I also did a tombow comparison
Hey there. Awesome job as usual. On the Zig brush, you are not using it wrong, it’s a brush, therefore is thought for brush calligraphy like for example chinese letters. You know how important it is to use the right tools for the right purposes. The Zig brushes are amazing, but the same way you don’t use a parallel pen for copperplate you are not expected to use a Zig for this kind of calligraphy. Love from Spain. Marina
I recently got into hand lettering and I’ve discovered your channel. This video is great, thank you! Do you have an update video featuring the Fudenosuke Colors Set? Do they work as well as the black pens?
I use the Zig Brush Color Clean Markers - as far as I know, they are mostly use for drawings (unlike the Zig Dual Brush, which it was even advertised for lettering). You can mix the colors and use them with water as well (same as the Ecoline btw)
The Zig Clean Color (the Real Brush Pens) are actually more similar to a "watercolor" ink - so they are more geared toward that type of work from my understanding. I have them (I actually have most of these different brush pens lol - the love is real) and they actually make really great watercolor "markers" to get more detailed work when watercolor painting as well as laying down base colors. They definitely work for hand lettering but I think they would be better suited for a larger (maybe poster sized) painterly hand lettering where you almost color the lettering in (you could get some really cool blended watercolors). Just wanted to share my experience with those ones! :) Love these stationery showdown videos (and Wix actually - been using since about 2009 when I was in HS.
Megan Cattey that's maybe the one thing I like about the Kuretake brand (zig) they have some specially designed for lettering and some rather nice ones for colouring. Even the mangaka flexablies are quite decent for drawing and lettering if you know what your doing. Downside is they can be expensive, but some of the more elaborate calligraphy ranges are quite easy to get the hang of using. Also just a small correction, the real brushes are waterbased inks that can behave like watercolours, as with most of the ZiG ranges, but are not proper watercolours - just incase anyone reads and makes that mistake (as some people seem to, especially beginners who've never tried using real watercolours before) And like yourself, I quite love them and the Kelidolines range which there's probably a differnce between them but so far it's just colour range options that differ, the ink, how it blends and the real brush nibs on them are exactly the same...but I think one of them is a newer release.
Gemini Journaling there's already wonderful people like the video host who do a wonderful job of that. In truth though, it all comes down to how you think they feel when you use them, as one person's experience differes from another. I don't do bullet journals or writing with these, instead I do illustration so my usage of these is quite different. I like these vids as it helps me find out about other brands I may like to experiment with in future and a matter of getting my hands on some due to limited availability of them in my own country.
Yea - not real watercolors like what you will squeeze out of a watercolor paint tube (and also not like gouache paint either) but that's why I just typed "ink" with the quotes because I didn't really know what else to call them in a short manner. I suppose it would have been better to say a watercolor-like "ink" but *shrugs*. I was more so just trying to comment for anyone else who is interested in them and how they might perform since they were the most different from the other pens compared in the video (since they performed relatively poorly on her comparison scale but do have a great purpose)! I haven't tried anything in the Kelidolines range - I will have to look into it! I love stationery and such (bullet journaling and just overall fun - obvious since I am here on a Stationery Showdown video hahah) but have an art background so I still rely on videos like her Stationery Showdown to decide which pens to try out - since they can add up $$ pretty quickly. :)
Megan Cattey yeah i know how you feel about prices (live in Australia so everything is expensive) but since having kids and unable to get my paints/inks out these have been the ultimate blessing in disguise. I have seen other comparison vids with them and depending on the reviewer and their paper choices the performance of them varies. They're still great to use and can be used as a stepping stone into ink colouring and lettering with real brushes if that's the direction you want to go. Again the range for lettering by the same brand are similar in nib for some of thier pens, so it is possible to use these for the same purpose if your not an illustrator and just want pretty lettering (though the others have replaceable brush nibs & ink refills if you do wruin them & are cheaper than buying an entire pen) though if you do for bullet journals a thicker paper might be required as they do wruin thin paper quite easily if your not careful. (experience in that area with sketchbook journaling, too thin a paper and it makes the paper look like you've tipped too much water/ink in one place.)
Natalia Hernandez can u plz subscribe my channel i will also subscribe u subscribe for a subscribe...🙏i am subcribing your channel and plz plz like my videos
I have the ZIG brushables, but I'm still getting used to brush pens for lettering, so maybe that's why I usually think the result looks like a regular marker hahaha I'm not good at the thin lines I guess, but I'm trying... and btw, thank you so much for helping me, Amanda! you're awesome and I've been learning a lot from you since I started bullet journaling last year ♡
I actually started off with Zig Clean Colors, so after practice, it gets way easier and it's much easier to control the lines, they're my favorite brush pens by far.
Thank you sooo much for this incredible review of these pens. This video helped me a lot to buy my favourite and the best pens for calligraphy.................
I just got the Kuretake brush pens today and I'm flipping out over these, I love them so much and they're so great for beginners like me who might need help controlling their hand
I am currently using the Faber-Castel Pitt Artist Brush pens, but I want to move on to the Tombow Dual Brush pens. Would you recommend this? I am already using the Tombow Fudenosukes for letter so more of a coloring thing in my bullet journal. Which brand do you think will work better?
I have Tombow Dual Brush Pens, but for some reason I love doing calligraphy in a usual fineliner or pen and filling in the texture. It just works for me lol
Loved watching this! And the Ecoline brushpens are more for watercolouring than lettering. The brand had liqued watercolours in bottles, they came up with the brushpens a few years ago ❤
Hey Amanda:) I've been loving this series of yours and its always so enjoyable and informative to watch! I was thinking that for your next stationary showdown, if you need any ideas, then you could do an eraser showdown.
The faber castell brush pens fray really badly after a while. I resorted to pulling out a little more nib and cutting it at an angle to get sharper lines as i'd only get weird smudgy/frayed lineart
I have had the opposite experience: Tombow Dual is very hard for me to control but the Sakura Koi is by far my favorite pen, as I get the most control with that one.
Love the video thanks for the new pen idea's. Have u tried the prisma color brush tips there fire . Do u do any other art then stationery.? Much love and respect
But why do they have to be so expensive ;_;

Tombow F. is actually pretty cheap!

great for blending and watercolor art.
Ecoline's are really bad for beginners because the brush is so long. And they are very expensive

Amanda,
I can't thank you enough. You have inspired me to make my own bullet journal. You also help EVERYONE to know the best materials and you give us new spread ideas every month. You are so sweet and teach all of us your tips and tricks to bullet journaling. I really hope I get to meet you someday, you are such an inspiration! Did I mention that you are incredibly skilled in art. ilysm
❤️💛💚💙💜💗💖❣️💕💘💝🖤😍😘
you should add a price section to your showdowns!! that'd be really helpful :)
btw Amanda, ur calligraphy is just amazing, even with the ecoline brush pen! ily
Do I just have a faulty one or does anyone else experiencing this occasional bleedthrough?
if you have troubles with bleeding, I would recommend putting another rough sheet of paper under the paper that you're writing on, it really helps!
Never happened to me and I use them a lot.
Maybe use a thicker paper?
That's happened to me before, I was doodling in a workbook during class and when I flipped the page it bled! I guess it's just an occasional gush of ink, the next day it stopped bleeding...
Gabriella Sebestyen maybe you’ve been pressing extra hard without realizing? Idk
Will you be doing an update to this video with newer pen options? I just watched your stationary organization and you have so many different pens now.😀
Omg your reviews are always so good and not tiring thanks a lot!! Btw do you have fraying problems with the tombow as Sakura koi?
I definelty have fraying problems, but it is because tomboys fray more with left handers like me. I have a tombow fudenosuke review I would really love for you to check out, it may answer your question
Finally a brush pen comparison! 💕❤
I love her comparisons too! I have a tombow comparison on my channel. I would love some feedback from someone who loves stationary showdowns
Actually tombow fudenosuke comes in a variety of colors but I think you can find them only on amazon
You can also purchase these on Blitsy.com, Tombowusa.com, and several others.
No, Tokyo pen shop and jet pens have them you can even buy them individually
I'm a WIX customer and I agree with you!
when is your next bullet journal set up coming out?
I just found out about brush pens this summer, but knew nothing about them... this video took care of that, and I definitely want to get one! Thank you so much for posting this!
When is ur July video coming out?
I have the same question...
it'll be really soon but bc she's been so busy as of late (what with travelling to and from VidCon), I'd just be patient :)
I agree with you
Soon I hope ^-^
Its here
I have found this useful as an entrant to the craft, just to see the different styles naturally coming out of each pen. Parameters like flexibility and control don't mean anything to me yet but this video helped me figure out I prefer the look of thinner lettering and more opaque pigment. That has narrowed down which pens I'll be looking for! :)
I got a pack of the tombow secondary colours, and it’s honestly been one of my favourite birthday present lmao
Thanks for this video! Always wanted to see a comparison of all the brush pen together xx
I bought my first bullet journal and I’m so intimidated to start for July. Tips for starting mid year, and to beat this intimidation?
Briana McCarthy if you are still in school or something like that try and do a school year calendar.
Darcie Reinhart ooh that's what im deciding on doing when I start my journal
Briana McCarthy I'm startin mid year too cuz school lol
Single mom out of school
I think to beat the intimidation of starting a bullet journal is to go on Pinterest and find lots of inspiration that you can copy from. Go in knowing that you’re going to make a lot of mistakes, but you’re going to learn what you like and don’t like. Once you’ve got your foundation, you just build from there and can get more creative with your spreads with washi tape or doodles or whatever is your style. Hope this helps!!
Your videos always inspire me to bullet journal and to practice my hand lettering!
No one: Me at 1:50 : How did she order the pens to be that straight?!
what i like about artline stix is its more on the cheap side but what i dislike about it is because it's a marker-like pen, it bleeds so much. other thank that. i like them. though not as much as the tombow dual brush pens. those were what i used to actually practice and make my calligraphy better and neater. it isn't really something a beginner should use since it's expensive and you'll be practicing writing so many times and it would be a waste of ink. but it actually helped me get used to the pressure, correct thickness and all of that.
@amandarachlee , The Tombow Fudenosuke has got more colors now! I got them already! I love them alot! You should get them too!
For me I used to have tombow but I recently got ecoline pens and they’re like the best for me
What are the names of the gold, grey and black markers that u usually use?
The black one that she used a lot in the 2019 ser up vid for fill ups
WHERE IS THE EXPLOSION?!?
Thank you for taking out time to share in such detail. You are kind and an amazing person. Have a beautiful life
My mom bought me a pack of Sakura pigmas and a Tombow Dual pack for 110$ ILY MOM
Wow our lucky
Amanda , plz if u can find (cuz I cant) give the link of brush pens with all colors and not only black i just love your reviews and want to but the best you suggest💜😁🥺
Her friend: so what do you like?
Amanda: *yEs*
ROCK THAT SHOWDOWN GURL!!!
I have a question
It’s literally my only problem
How do you control, how the brush pen um bends ? When you write ‘e’ or “c”, simply when you need to make your brush pen move to the left
GOOD VIDEO. BUT WHAT ABOUT SHOWING A PRICE FOR EACH ONE?
Johnny Injun Hehe
In terms of price, if you have the money, get the tombow dual brush pens. A pack of 10 if 29.99 at Michael's where I live. I got a discount tho. I believe a 14 dollar discount. For cheaper ones, eh, idk. But, the Tombows are worth it.
Super useful comparison, thank you!
I just want to mention that the Kuretake Clean Color comes in two versions: Real Brush and Faux Brush, which is a felt tip type brush. The FB is significantly cheaper than the Real, too, but afaik they come in all the same colors!
I don’t own all the ones you showed in this video......
But I do own the both Tombows!!
I do too! I use tombows in my spreads all the time, and did in fact in my last July spread, I think if you enjoy her videos you would like mine too. I also did a tombow comparison
I have the Pentel fude touch 🙋
Marina
I was wondering what brush pen to buy, and I thought, “ I wish Amanda would post a video about brush pens.” The next day, look what I found!
What did you end up getting?
I recently got into hand lettering and I’ve discovered your channel. This video is great, thank you!
Do you have an update video featuring the Fudenosuke Colors Set? Do they work as well as the black pens?
When are you doing a July plan with me??😉
I use the Zig Brush Color Clean Markers - as far as I know, they are mostly use for drawings (unlike the Zig Dual Brush, which it was even advertised for lettering).
Wow you really seem educated on your sationary products, would you mind viewing my channel and/or videos and giving me helpful tips like these?
Thank you Amanda! I was thinking about getting a brush pen for small titles, so I've gone with the hard tip tombow fudenosuke!
Lysm Amanda best Chanel💜
Natalia Hernandez can u plz subscribe my channel i will also subscribe u subscribe for a subscribe...🙏i am subcribing your channel and plz plz like my videos
The rainbow unicorn sure
Literally my favorite UA-camr ever
I’ve watched this video like 10 times now 🤦🏻♀️
I have the ZIG brushables, but I'm still getting used to brush pens for lettering, so maybe that's why I usually think the result looks like a regular marker hahaha I'm not good at the thin lines I guess, but I'm trying... and btw, thank you so much for helping me, Amanda! you're awesome and I've been learning a lot from you since I started bullet journaling last year ♡

The swirls are so satisfying
I’m happy now. 🙂
Like who loved ecoline brush😍👇
Finally, I've been waiting for so long for this video. Love ittttt
Helpful video but, you wasted a lot of sheets of paper.
I actually started off with Zig Clean Colors, so after practice, it gets way easier and it's much easier to control the lines, they're my favorite brush pens by far.
Yes LOVVVVEDD THIS!!! Question are you going to upload your July bullet journal setup this month?
Thank you sooo much for this incredible review of these pens. This video helped me a lot to buy my favourite and the best pens for calligraphy.................
Personally for bullet journaling i prefer the tombow fudenoske, I just love the consistency and the two options (hard or soft tip)
OMG YES!! This video is just what I needed, since I'm shopping for art supplies/stationery soon!💞💞
Bought the Tombow Fudenosuke hard tip because of this video, and I really enjoy using it in my small sketchbook for both drawing and handlettering
Tombow Fudenoske is my all time favorite brush pen. And like you the hard tip is my go to for all my lettering needs,
I just got the Kuretake brush pens today and I'm flipping out over these, I love them so much and they're so great for beginners like me who might need help controlling their hand
Yes! I really needed someone to do this so I can know which brush pens to buy now 👏🏽👏🏽
The tombow fudenosuke pens just came out in new colors(rainbow set)on amazon 🙂🙂
I have Tombow Dual Brush Pens, but for some reason I love doing calligraphy in a usual fineliner or pen and filling in the texture. It just works for me lol
This was sooo helpful!!! As a beginner I have no idea what would be easiest to use after crayola markers, I think maybe tombow or Faber castel
Loved watching this! And the Ecoline brushpens are more for watercolouring than lettering. The brand had liqued watercolours in bottles, they came up with the brushpens a few years ago ❤
I’ve been waiting for another stationary showdown!!!
Thanks so much, love it
Hey Amanda:)
I've been loving this series of yours and its always so enjoyable and informative to watch!
I was thinking that for your next stationary showdown, if you need any ideas, then you could do an eraser showdown.
Have you tried the Marvy Uchida Artist Brush pens? I would really like to know what you think about them.
I got the tombow fudenosuke soft and hard tip some time ago and I love fhem
