Yeah I thought the good old fashion brush and dip ink won! I have a brush pen myself (the pentel one) and it’s quite difficult to master but my god is it fun to use!
I would say brush and ink for this kind of art. The first pen makes a little too clean and 'dead' feeling. The second is nice with some thicker lines etc, but the third feels like most artsy with the shading, the black filled areas and the little dots from the ink you can't get with the other two.
I read this comment before the video thinking, “ this is a hot take, there is no way the brush has more potential then a brush pen.” But after watching the video I cannot agree more.
This has convinced me to give brush and ink a try. I've always been a mix media artist but shy to try brush and ink because it always felt archaic and intimidating but seeing the results has blown my mind and I'm considering using this style for a couple of my characters now
The brush artwork is just so cool. That's probably just the artist, but hell yeah. Also, I actually use a fountain pen. Because you can't really find brush pens in SA and my family has a thing of collecting fountain pens, so, that's my go to choice.
SA as in South Africa or South America? Coz if South Africa, check out artsavingsclub.co.za/ - I got both the tombow fundeosuke and the pentel pocket brush from there. And also. PNA had the pentel pocket brush
Or Sacramento California, or Seattle Washington, or Savannah Georgia, or if you're not american maybe Saudi Arabia, or do you live in Salta? Need more context
I'm from Belgium (we learned how to write with a fountain pen. Its mandatory) and I'm so used of writing with a fountain pen that I love inking with a dip pen (and colouring with a brush and ink/watercolours). I get what you mean. You can get amazing lines if you are used to working with a fountain or dip pen. 😁👍
The pen: ol’reliable you can pick this up and just do a bit of doodling The brush pen: The chonky one be careful you will get very messed up if you can’t control how hard you press The brush: man this takes skill but with that skill you can do a lot more
The brush piece is beautiful, detailed expressive and draws the attention of the viewer straight away, it has contrast, a mix of detail and simple areas of black, I love it , it's all in all an aesthetically and technically sound piece
actually my expectations were the same, but id now say 1st: Brush 2nd: Pen 3rd: Brushpen 'cause of the pen's convinience to use and the brushpen having quite a few inperfections.... whilst not having that many advantages....
@@skilo258 mainly it is dependent on art style If you know Kesh you can see that his art style would not work without a brush pen and it looks phenomenal For me all of them are 1st and they can be used for different things :)

Winner: Brush In reality it depend what you are doing, for "comic book" art the pen is clear winner, for an art piece you will color and possibly user markers to finish brush pen. if you were to make me a piece of art i want the brush one with shading.
Honestly for comic book art I'd add another challenger ... The dip pen a ton of mangaka use it for their professional work and it allows a little more control over the brush but can still utilize the same inks and many of the techniques a brush can. And even then the pen I would say is best used when going back with other materials to add more depth to the piece

“Pen isn’t mightier then the sword. Pens don’t win battles and swords don’t write poetry. Mighty is the hand that knows when to pick the pen and when to pick the sword.” - anonymous
When working with a brush, the "inconvenience of having to work left to right, or right to left" is made obsolete simply by turning your canvas. By doing this you can jump around different areas as you get bored or as they dry.. you're welcome.
The brush is the most versatile. And while many think it is outdated, there is clearly a reason brushes are still made and still around. The brush creation also feels the most complete. It has the most movement and life to it. While the other two are awesome and practical, the brush is still top dog for this fight.
Winner: All of them. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as styles they work well with. In the end it all depends on what kind of style the artist is going for. However, if I had to choose the one artwork I like the most, I must say the brush. I'm a sucker for that style. I feel like the pen and brushpen are best used when working with colors and other tools, but as a single tool the versatility of the brush can't be beat.
I agree with all of this except your vote for art piece. I actually like the middle one (brush pen?). I think that it looks put together with out being finished. I could still color it and that to me is the point of line work :)
Brush looks the best however the brush pen is a close second on aesthetic and the line weight difference looks so cool. So for efficiency and use ability, I'd go with the brush pen
Honestly, the brush. It gives so much more texture, variety, and even gradient to the drawing. the others are great, but not as wide in variety as the brush
3:23 Jazza: the only way to find which is the best is to battle them to the death Me: the way i am going to find out which is the best is by watching Jazza fight them to the death
The brush definitely has a special place in my heart. The tactile experience of drawing a loaded brush across a surface and leaving exactly the expressive stroke you were looking for is SO SATISFYING!!! There's a reason all the best calligraphy porn is with a brush.
Recently got a pen set as a gift. It has lots of liners and a brush pen. Started to use the brush pen and I can’t stop. My arts pretty messy but it’s a lot of fun and adding line weight is so much easier now!
I love the way that the brush piece looks like, but the hassle of dipping it in the ink so much is a downside that I don’t know if I can get over. Either way, I would say the brush wins any day.
Honestly I've used brushes and dip pens for calligraphy so I might be biased but dipping isn't that inconvenient imo especially since you get to choose how much ink you want at any given time. Also for ink you aren't limited on colour as much and there are specialty inks with certain sheens and particulate that can bring an entire new dimension to a piece artwork or calligraphy
Can't compare them, Jazza! Each one turned out to be so unique and epic in its own sense! Pen: Cleanest; conveys the character's exact physical appearance on the paper Brushpen: Puts the character's (voice and) emotions on the paper Brush: The complete picture; puts the character's soul on the paper
When I use to do traditional art, I fell in love with using brushes and inks. 1st: Brush - it is very versatile and traditional 2nd: Brush Pen - it combines the best of the pen and the brush without all the restrictions 3rd: Pen - it is clean and accurate but not as versatile
Man, to each drawing I was like "that one that one!" but I must say I was must surprised at preferring the brush. So much atmosphere from those flicks and watercolour shadows, amazing choice of character Jazza
the BRUSH is the best, it takes some skill but that’s what makes it so powerful, once you know what your doing you can do anything, you can make thin lines, thick lines, shade, splatter. literally everything. And it feels really fun to use so in my opinion it’s the clear winner. Also you can dry brush! which is essential to creating certain textures. That’s the advantage of the ink running out on the brush (sorry this is long but i want it to win lmao)
Oh brush and ink for sure. The ability to lighten the ink with water and fill in large areas is unmatched. The other two just feel kind of....empty? The pen was too precise, almost, and with precision you can see all the little mistakes you do. The brushpen was cooler, in that it had some really interesting line variation, but the brush was so elegant and artistic in a more traditional sense. The background blotch was a really cool touch that made it more interesting to look at as well.
Dude you knocked it out of the park with this one. Great comparison and your characters nailed the essence of each tool. Really helped visualize the strengths and limitations of each pen/brush.

First Place: The Brush
Second Place: The Brush pen
Third Place: The Pen
the real winner is the art we made along the way
The brush absolutely won. It’s the most complete artwork of the three. It’s freaking beautiful. Ultimate winner Jazzer! Good freaking job man
Yeah I thought the good old fashion brush and dip ink won! I have a brush pen myself (the pentel one) and it’s quite difficult to master but my god is it fun to use!
The real winner here is Jazza. This guy made awesome things with all of those.
I would say brush and ink for this kind of art. The first pen makes a little too clean and 'dead' feeling. The second is nice with some thicker lines etc, but the third feels like most artsy with the shading, the black filled areas and the little dots from the ink you can't get with the other two.
I think that it depends on the skill of the artist. Pen for beginners, brush pen for intermediate, and brush and ink for master
The brush, while being the most unhandy to use, also has the most potential.
Or South Asia? South Australia? Way to many continents with A, so I’d say SA doesn’t suffice 😉
I love using fountain pens. I love how smooth and how well they flow. 😊
Drawing Percy Jackson with the pen could have been cool, since his pen is his sword.
That would be cool
Ooh that would have been a great idea! Plus the inking and color gradients in that would have been super fun!
I agree, cool idea 💡
That would have been cool, I was thinking Jazza’s 2nd drawing looks kinda like Ares
@@ellieg1169 Or Mars
The pen: ol’reliable you can pick this up and just do a bit of doodling
The brush pen: The chonky one be careful you will get very messed up if you can’t control how hard you press
The brush: man this takes skill but with that skill you can do a lot more
Brush Pen Duke Nukem: "I'm here to draw lines and chew bubblegum, and I'm all outta bubblegum!"
I think the winner is who can control the pen, brush pen, and the brush in different arts, in this case jazza is one of those people.

The brush piece is beautiful, detailed expressive and draws the attention of the viewer straight away, it has contrast, a mix of detail and simple areas of black, I love it , it's all in all an aesthetically and technically sound piece
3 minutes in and Jazza has already referred to all 3 as a “brush pen”.

Winner: Brush
In reality it depend what you are doing, for "comic book" art the pen is clear winner, for an art piece you will color and possibly user markers to finish brush pen. if you were to make me a piece of art i want the brush one with shading.
Honestly for comic book art I'd add another challenger ... The dip pen a ton of mangaka use it for their professional work and it allows a little more control over the brush but can still utilize the same inks and many of the techniques a brush can. And even then the pen I would say is best used when going back with other materials to add more depth to the piece
the real winner is the group of people who saw the title as “brush vs brush pen vs brush” before it was edited
Yes lol

I swear I did a triple take when I got the notif. Figured he was doing pointed ink brush versus brush pen versus a broad painting brush lol

"theres a reason racism is still arnd"
that logic doesnt logic, bro
Brush without a doubt wins. As in many things the hardest to use is the most versatile and when you have the skill it performs the best
I love how the brush pen caricature has all the arms but absolutely ZERO legs
Someone skips leg day 😅
(I imagine it's because you need zero legs to draw, but what do I know?)
Well, not zero
Winner: All of them.
They each have their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as styles they work well with. In the end it all depends on what kind of style the artist is going for.
However, if I had to choose the one artwork I like the most, I must say the brush. I'm a sucker for that style. I feel like the pen and brushpen are best used when working with colors and other tools, but as a single tool the versatility of the brush can't be beat.
I agree with all of this except your vote for art piece. I actually like the middle one (brush pen?). I think that it looks put together with out being finished. I could still color it and that to me is the point of line work :)
wow you're so boring, pick an option and roll with it, fence sitters are the worst
@@DGP406 Wow, and you're not rude at all!
Brush looks the best however the brush pen is a close second on aesthetic and the line weight difference looks so cool. So for efficiency and use ability, I'd go with the brush pen
All 3 pieces turned out really cool! But maaaaan the brush piece has so much mood and grit to it.. I have to give it the brush!
Honestly, the brush. It gives so much more texture, variety, and even gradient to the drawing. the others are great, but not as wide in variety as the brush

The gradients and the ink splatter effects just look too cool for me to say anything other than the brush. So awesome.
The brush definitely has a special place in my heart. The tactile experience of drawing a loaded brush across a surface and leaving exactly the expressive stroke you were looking for is SO SATISFYING!!! There's a reason all the best calligraphy porn is with a brush.
I've been really getting into longer elegant brush pens, they are very fun and satisfying to use and I like the effect they give. Great video!
Jayden Gebhardt yh I guess it depends on the person and their patience level :)
I love the borough try to gess
That brush illustration BY FAR outshines the previous two. It’s much more dynamic and interesting. I want to see water color integrated with it 👀
i haven’t even watched the video yet but either way it’s gonna be good

And I liked the video without watching it...😄
Can't compare them, Jazza! Each one turned out to be so unique and epic in its own sense!
Pen: Cleanest; conveys the character's exact physical appearance on the paper
Brushpen: Puts the character's (voice and) emotions on the paper
Brush: The complete picture; puts the character's soul on the paper
When I use to do traditional art, I fell in love with using brushes and inks.
1st: Brush - it is very versatile and traditional
2nd: Brush Pen - it combines the best of the pen and the brush without all the restrictions
3rd: Pen - it is clean and accurate but not as versatile
Man, to each drawing I was like "that one that one!" but I must say I was must surprised at preferring the brush. So much atmosphere from those flicks and watercolour shadows, amazing choice of character Jazza
IT IS THE OLD CLASSIC *BRUSH* ! Oh my god that drawing turned out AMAZING!
anyone else noticed that the "Pen Character" is a *PILOT*, as in Pilot Pen
the BRUSH is the best, it takes some skill but that’s what makes it so powerful, once you know what your doing you can do anything, you can make thin lines, thick lines, shade, splatter. literally everything.
The brush .. really turned out to be the underdog ! The shading and colouring gives so much power in the right hands!
Dude you knocked it out of the park with this one. Great comparison and your characters nailed the essence of each tool. Really helped visualize the strengths and limitations of each pen/brush.
